The Deckers were the epitome of new money, with the family's wealth being made by the stealing and use of land by Nellie's grandfather, Jonathan Decker Sr. The patriarchs of the Decker family had no only a chip on their shoulder of how they felt snubbed by families of older money in common, but their domineering personalities in both business and family life. It was how Jonathan Sr treated his son, and how Jonathan Jr would treat his children, a seemingly endless cycle of abuse. Jonathan Jr would go on to marry Jaqueline Boudreux, she was below wha this family would consider 'worthy', having been from a middle class family, but she had a submissiveness that he desired. The couple would go on to have three children, Jeffrey, James, and many years later, Janelle. Only months after Janelle was born would Jaqueline disappear without a trace. Of course, there were ugly rumors that Jonathan had done something to her. But the family knows the truth: she couldn't stand the monster of her husband and sons any longer, and fled only months after giving birth to Nellie, leaving her with the same men she sought to escape. Jeffrey would go off to be the only of the children to have a family of his own, Shepherd, Cole, and Saywer, although Cole had been borne out of a tawdry affair and not even known to his family until very recently.
