Back in the olden days, if you used the "keep reading" function on a Tumblr-dot-com post, it would
not get very many notes.
At all.
I am not sure exactly why.
I think people hated pressing an extra thing.
But maybe it was also a psychological phenomenon where, given the choice, they were unwilling to trust me with their time.
But if I sucked them in with a good story or a compelling image, they would get serious FOMO.
Tumblr media
When I created a super high effort post-of-length I would get comments like, "This was way too long but before I realized it I was reading the last sentence."
That was a really good feeling.
I used to do tests to figure out the best posting strategies and I think I figured out you'd lose about 90% of your notes if you did a "keep reading" post.
So that notion was ingrained in my brain again and again from when I was very note-obsessed and I have since avoided the "keep reading" option almost like a conditioned response.
Just seeing that squiggly line appear still induces a Pavlovian fear.
Tumblr media
But that was probably a decade ago and I did a new experiment. My story about replacing my mailbox did reasonably well with a strategically clickbaity "keep reading."
This was a promising result due to the fact that some people like to send me hate for writing a lengthy post.
I recently got a death threat for writing too much, which was a fun reminder of my M&M days (I melted men's rights activists' brains with a poorly worded analogy and they launched a years long harassment campaign).
It seems in present-era-Tumblr-dot-com many more people prefer pressing an extra thing rather than scrolling a bunch on their smartphone. The collective behavior has changed. And maybe I don't need to use tricks and running gags in order to get folks to "keep reading".
Tumblr media
Unfortunately I started writing that ring light post a few months ago so I wasn't able to include that in the experiment. But I am going to try using the keep reading function in the future and as long as the average number of folks that usually read my longer posts continue to read my posts, that will be the standard approach.
I also tag these posts with "long post" so you can flag that if you wish.
While I am no longer in the audience-building phase of my Tumblr career, these essays and stories and educational posts take a considerable amount of time and effort to create, so I do want to make sure everyone who wants to read them is able to. But posts without hearts and reblogs can quickly die a gruesome algorithmic death. Even my most ardent followers would tell me things were not showing up on their dash. (I think replies help mitigate that, so if you like a long post, you can help with engagement.)
The collective noun is a "business" of ferrets.
Do you want to see a business of ferrets ready to do some business?
Tumblr media
I love writing and it is a huge catharsis for me. And I love sharing any knowledge I feel like I have the earned expertise to speak on with authority (technology, photography, light, fun ferret facts, etc). I wish I had the energy to be a photography teacher, but long posts on Tumblr are probably the best I can do for now.
I know my posts are super long, but I try to make them as fun and informationally dense as I possibly can. I don't like wasting people's time if I can avoid it. Though maybe I should trust my follower's attention span a bit more. I have this fear that if I am not constantly entertaining, people will click away or unfollow.
I think a good business for a business of ferrets would be selling pool noodles that look like ferrets.
Tumblr media
So as long as I get roughly the same amount of notes I will do the keep reading. And then maybe people can lay off on the mean comments and occasional requests to end my own life because I bloviated about soft light.
100% true ferret fact..
If you ask a ferret what their business is, they will crawl on your shoulder and whisper in your ear...

Mysterious Ways
An unfortunate accident could have very fortunate consequences.
Tumblr media
A/N: First of my @clonexreaderbingo fics! For the "Cody" square 🥰
Tumblr media
Warnings: Accidental nudity mentioned? Embarrassing situations?
--------------------------------------------------
"Fives! Fives! Echo!" You dashed down the hall of the Resolute, trying to get their attention. The two clones spun around, raising an eyebrow at your panicked expression.
"Commander?!" Echo sounded concerned.
You paused to catch your breath.
"I...I need your help with something!"
Fives smirked and crossed his arms, "Must be something pretty important."
Your face turned red. "Uh well....so you see..." You scratched the back of your neck nervously.
Echo sighed, rolling his eyes, "Oh no, what did you do?"
"Ok, so I need you guys to distract Commander Cody so that I can grab his datapad and delete a few things."
Fives looked confused.
Echo pinched the bridge of his nose. "Again, what did you do!?"
You sighed and looked at the ground. Your feet had suddenly become very interesting. "Uhm...well..." You coughed. Fives was leaning up against the wall clearly invested in whatever your reasoning was.
"So uhm...I was working with Commander Cody the other day and I was a little late with the reports. So this morning he asked me to send him the reports. So I did. Or at least I thought I did. Then I realized I'd clicked on the wrong file and sent him....not my reports."
You could feel the embarrassed heat burning through your face, threatening to consume you. Part of you wished it would. Then you wouldn't have to deal with this.
The boys were silent for a minute.
"So what'd you send him?" Echo asked, furrowing his brow, "It couldn't have been that bad."
"Uhh...yeah... So I had some photos on my datapad...."
"Holy shit, you didn't!" Fives' mouth dropped open; his face filled with a combination of shock and glee.
You looked up at him in horror and nodded slowly.
"You mean you sent Marshal Commander Cody your nudes!?" He cackled.
"Shhhh!" You tried to shush him. "Don't say it out loud! I didn't mean to!"
"Siths Hells..." Echo sighed, running a hand down his face. The muscles in his jaw quivered as he fought in vain to keep the corners of his lips from curling up into an incredulous grin - a mischievous twinkle in his eye.
You hopped back and forth nervously from one foot to the other, "So....are you gonna help me or not?"
"Yeah I....ooof" Fives began and was cut off, catching Echo's elbow in the gut.
"What was....oh...shit..." Fives turned his eyes to the hall behind you. His grin got even wider.
"Oh this oughta be good."
"What...?" you raised an eyebrow in confusion, turning your head to see what had gotten his attention. General Kenobi strolled down the hall accompanied by none other than the Marshal Commander Cody himself, datapad in hand.
"Welp....we gotta go!" Echo said quickly, dragging his brother by the arm. You shot him a panicked look.
"No, no don't...!" You whispered harshly, begging them, but with a quick salute to the General, they were already well on their way down the hall.
Traitors. You muttered under your breath. You didn't have to use the Force to feel the breath hitch in the Commanders throat as the two paused before you.
He knew. Oh Force. He knew.
"Master Kenobi," you bowed, respectfully acknowledging the Jedi Master. He replied in kind, saying nothing else, but if you could feel the tension in the hall, then he certainly could.
You nodded with a professional stiffness towards the clone. "Commander."
He replied with a curt nod of his own. "Commander."
You were glad his helmet was on, preventing you from seeing the look on his face.
After a brief moment that seemed to last an eternity, the pair continued down the hall resuming their conversation.
You let out a breath you didn't realize you'd been holding.
Oh Force, I need a drink.
A ping from your com interrupted your thoughts and you looked down. A message from Fives:
79's tonight?
Sounds good. I need a drink.
Great. See you there!
****
79's was already packed by the time you made it down to the clone bar. Both the 501st and the 212th were on shore leave for a few days - a rare occurrence but well deserved. The war was going well for once. You took a seat in a booth close to the bar waiting for Fives and his brother, taking in the chaotic but familiar scene. The air smelt like stale beer and cheap cologne. It'd been awhile since you'd last been out to a place like this.
"So! Tell us all about it." Fives slid into the booth behind you. You jumped, so caught up in your own thoughts that you hadn't noticed the pair of them come over.
"Yeah, how awkward was it?" Questioned Echo, sitting down on the other side of you. "Did he say anything?"
You shook your head. "Nope. And hopefully he never will!"
Fives cracked a grin. "The General definitely knew though."
"No. No he did not!" You leaned forward, forcefully pointing your finger at him.
Echo grinned as he crossed his arms over his chest and leaned back into the booth. "Oh yeah. He totally did. He's got the whole Jedi thing going for him."
"Hey!" You protested, "I'm a Jedi too!"
Fives laughed. "Yeah but you weren't subtle...like.... at all. Even if he doesn't know exactly what's up, he definitely knows something was weird between the two of you."
"And besides that," Echo chimed in, "Cody is General Kenobi's second in command. They probably know each other pretty well."
You sighed and ran a hand down your face, chuckling at the absurdity of the whole situation.
"If this was supposed to make me feel better, you failed miserably."
Echo patted your shoulder and took a another drink.
Fives downed the rest of his own. "Besides, I'm pretty sure Cody didn't mind." He winked.
You choked and Echo smacked you on the back, simultaneously kicking Fives under the table.
"You know what? I think I'm gonna get us some more drinks!" You stood up suddenly, and nodded to yourself. "Yep. More drinks."
Sighing to yourself, you made your way over to the bar. If Commander Cody had feelings for you, did that make this whole thing better or worse?
A clone made his way over to the bar, the yellow in the shoulder bell of his armor caught your eye and you turned.
Oh no. Out of all places, of course you'd find him here. You turned to run, ready to slip away unnoticed into the crowd of rowdy patrons but it was too late. He'd already noticed you. You could tell he was trying hard to ignore you, but when you turned away, you could feel his eyes burning through the back of your head.
Curious, you turned so that you could see him out of the corner of your eye. Just enough to gauge his reactions but not enough to make it seem like you were staring at the Marshal Commander.
You glanced over at him and he seemed to have the same idea. He stood frozen, eyes locked with yours. It felt impossible.
"Can I take your order, miss?" The bartender waved her hand in front of your face. You glanced over at her impatient expression. You rolled your eyes, both annoyed at her interruption and thankful that you now had a chance to run from it all.
"No thanks!" You called to her over your shoulder as you slipped from the barstool into the crowd of patrons. A pit formed in your stomach. Now you just wanted to go home - away from the embarrassment you'd be sure to face once confronted by the Marshal Commander.
"Wait!" He called out, walking briskly after you, pushing through a crowd of his drunk brothers paying no attention to their annoyed grumbling.
"Will you please just wait!?"
You paused, stepping into an unoccupied supply room. A gloved hand caught the door before you could swing it closed. He ran his fingers through his hair, dislodging a few errant strands from his professionally kempt military cut.
There was a difference, you realized, between Cody and the Marshal Commander rank he embodied. It was a very fine line, but a difference all the same. It was Cody whose gloved hands gave way to calloused fingers and nails that were subconsciously chewed too short. It was Cody whose face was creased by furrowing lines of concentration and concern.
It was the Marshal Commander's dark and stern eyes that gave way to Cody's subtle spark of kindness.
"Cody...." You began, unsure of what to even say. You knew now, how you felt towards this man.
He held up a hand and you paused.
"I just have to ask you one thing..." he took a breath. "Did you mean to send me those pictures?"
You breathed out a laugh. "No. Not exactly." You paused, glancing up to meet those warm, honey brown eyes. "But I'm glad I did."
"I don't think we'd have ever done this if you hadn't."
Done what? You were about to say, but Cody's mouth violently answered the unspoken question as he pressed his lips into yours.
"The Force works in mysterious ways" you panted as he pulled away, only to pull you right back into his arms.

Don't be SCAMMED this is important
Don't be SCAMMED this is important Have you ever received an email like this: "Dear Traders, Beware of . When you buy from them and send them money, you’ll never get your products and then suddenly can’t contact them anymore. Then they won't answer your emails or take your calls. Soon, you lose all your money. Please share this information with your customers." Or this: "It has been brought to our attention that there may be individuals operating in the marketplace impersonating in order to perpetuate fraud." You’d be surprised how often I get these emails. This next one is especially tricky because it could be legit, depending on your business. “The customer is willing to place a big order but needs sample units first and is not willing to pay for the samples upfront. This is going to be an issue because the sample units are going to be quite expensive.” Whatever your business and wherever you live, scam artists are out there, waiting to take advantage and siphon away your hard-earned revenue. They regularly change their alleged business names, aliases and even their scamming methods to avoid getting caught. But I’ve learned a few tricks in my years about spotting scam artists and I want to provide you with the knowledge and confidence you’ll need to remain scam-free. Below are some tools, tips and resources to help you curtail any future losses. Here are a few more common scams: You pay someone and then don’t receive anything. You buy AC adapters or batteries that turn out to be counterfeit. A product’s condition turns out to be misrepresented. For instance, you were promised Grade A or B, but what you got was junk. The deal you signed up for turns out to be significantly not-as-described. You try to remedy it with the seller but they stop answering your phone calls and responding to emails. Scammers often purchase a domain name similar to yours. They might even take your exact same name but use a .net, .org, or .us, instead of .com. A scam site might link its reviews to your site to make it seem legit. Then when customers Google your company, your reviews will come up. The customer feels comfortable even if the deals seem too good to be true, so they start placing orders on the fraudulent site. The scam site takes the order, but nothing ships out. Soon you start getting calls for order statuses you can’t locate. Read more details of the scam here. This next scam is the most popular one. You order all “Grade A,” “New,” or “Refurbished” products, but when they show up at your dock, they’re all wrong, or it’s all junk. I won’t say you should have gone out and inspected the products yourself, because I‘ve hand-tested each product in an order, then had the boxes swapped during shipping. I probably missed a few but if you come across any other scams, let me know so we can protect other traders. You might not have come across these issues yourself, but it could be worth your while to have some contacts and tools at your disposal when scoping out new customers and vendors. I also have more tricks in my E-book to help you circumvent cheating and get inspections performed on the cheap. The evolving scam Scam deals typically start with a phone call or email. Look closely at the email and the associated domains to get a sense of how serious the request is. Keep in mind, scam artists are going to be slippery. They love to use tricky domain names and fake social media accounts. They’ll even build websites to try to convince you they’re legit. When you talk on the phone with a possible scammer, it’s a good idea to jot down the number they called from. Reverse phone lookups and simple Google searches can help fill in missing information to verify a company. When determining if a buyer is safe or a scam, consider if their reviews are real or fake. Scamadviser.com is a good tool for assessing the risk of third-party websites. This tool saves you time authenticating domains. Scamadviser uses an algorithm to authenticate reviews, as well as determine if a website is legit or a front for phishing, and if a seller is peddling fake products. Two important things to consider here are 1) was the domain name registered recently? 2)how long until the domain name expires? Scammers are not going to register a domain name years in advance. Scam domains are usually registered recently. Next, look closer at the email. Does it have a signature, address, phone number, fax? Try to verify some of those details on your own. If they have Skype, WhatsApp or social media contacts, check them out and connect with them. Do those accounts look legit? When did the user last write a post? Use Google Maps to verify addresses, and zoom in using Street View to check out the building. Another verification hack I’ve found useful is calling neighboring businesses and asking about a business I’m suspicious of. How long have they been there? What type of unit are they in? Ask if trucks roll in and out of the location. You’d be surprised how much info people give out to strangers. Counterfeit products are another big problem in our industry — everything from batteries to AC adapters. Some of you probably know this a big problem and don't care because counterfeiting means cheap products. But counterfeit products can cause an end-user’s computer to fail, catch fire or worse, explode. Needless to say, this can lead to very high return rates for you and your resellers. Detecting counterfeit products or fakes can be difficult. RAM modules, hard drives, power adapters and batteries can be verified with the manufacturer, though it’s a time-consuming process. And checking with a manufacturer is really only feasible if you have a very specific need and must be 100% sure an item is legit. So here’s a quick hack to find out if your adapter or battery is legit. Get out a scale and weigh the original and the potential fake. The fake will always weigh less than the original. Here’s a video showing the obvious difference in weight. Payment time So you’re ready to pay and you’re feeling good about the deal. Now comes time to pay. I know what you’re going to say: wire transfer only. But I want to tell you that if the funds were obtained and transferred illegally, they can be reversed by your bank or the originating bank for up to one year. Wire transfers seem to be the favorite method for scammers these days. Good companies take credit cards and charge fees to do so. If a seller insists on wire-only, further investigation on your part is needed. There is too much material to go over in one blog post, but I go over ACH payments, Paypal and credit card payments scams in detail in my E-book (which I highly recommend reading because there is a lot to learn about ACH and the capabilities of reversals and chargebacks). Who can help me? Depending on the type of scam and the legalities of your county, state or country, I would contact a few agencies along with your local police. But first, I recommend consulting with your attorney to see what your options are. You must find a good attorney. If you need help finding an attorney anywhere in the globe, download my E-book. I’ll show you where to find them and how to keep them accountable as you track down buyers and sellers. Here are some other tools and processes you should put in place to avoid becoming a victim yourself. According to the Better Business Bureau’s investigative project Scam Studies, millions of people fall victim to scams each year. Take some time to check out the content there, which is very informative and should keep you updated on the latest scamming techniques. Also, check out the BBB’s Scam Tracker, where you can see all its reports. There are some methods to slow down a scam, but it will take hard work and it’s best to get ahead of the problem. So here are two tips to help make your online presence a little more bulletproof: Register all variations of your domain name — .net .org, .us, with dashes and without. Trademark your domain name. That way you can get the domain’s registrar to take down any infringing domains. I’m sure I missed a scam or two but I’ll leave you with a starting point and some additional links and search tools. Come back often because I’ll be updating this list and adding some content to make sure you’re aware of future cons. Website design Tips And Tricks You Can Apply Today
You most definitely are not the only one in this thought if are unfamiliar with what all web design is. There are lots of people that either do unknown just what web design entails or just how essential it is with advertising a business. Read this article to obtain an excellent background regarding the subject. For multimedia presentations, take advantage of the new HTML5 requirement. Although HTML5 isn't quite as sturdy for video games and also animation as Flash, it has the advantage of working stably on cellphone browsers, including those had in Apple equipment. HTML5 is also a fair bit leaner than Flash, so lots times will certainly improve, too. Stay away from having way too many animations on your site, even though it could look quite. It will likely drive possible viewers away, although having your sales spray page spin, revolve as well as blink may look amazing to you. When you include a lot of flashy dashes like that, it makes your site look amateurish which is not the message you intend to communicate. Stay clear of cramming page elements with each other. Each section of your web page must be naturally divided from each different, as this makes the purpose of each section a lot more clear. The most convenient means to different areas is using DIVs, but there are different methods, consisting of outright positioning (not advised), the CSS margin command, as well as drifts. Separate long content blocks. Having a huge wave of content is unneeded for any type of site, specifically when you could destroy it up by utilizing photos, or perhaps separating it into different pages. Uninteresting your viewers will just make them leave, so keep points as straightforward as well as fresh as possible. If the major translation services function correctly when translating your site, test your website to see. Some websites receive many global visitors, and also these site visitors occasionally use services like Google and BabelFish Equate to translate the content to their language. Particular web design issues, particularly inadequate server side code, could break these solutions. Recognize the background on your internet site. You do not want your content to be tough to read! A disruptive background is ... well, sidetracking. Choose backgrounds that coordinate accompanying your website, instead of clashing with it, as well as your message will be far more clear to your site visitors. Have a site map. These are useful to your customers and also the online search engine, as they provide a detailed review of your entire site. It could be a guide for visitors searching for a certain component of your website, as well as allow you to keep an eye on its design and structure. Finding out some standard HTML will help you include some fascinating extras to your website. As an example, you can have words that follow your arrow, or a banner that blinks vital information. Ensure to alter the colors and fonts periodically, so you seem much more entailed accompanying the internet site as well as its design. When developing your web site, you should utilize cascading style sheets, or CSS. These style sheets could be applied to every webpage on your internet site, and also will guarantee that the user encounter is consistent throughout the web site. They are additionally reliable for making quick style modifications to your website due to that you just need to alter the design sheet rather than making alterations on every page. Created a nice web page regarding you or your company as well as title it "About" or "Regarding United states." Too many web sites use uninteresting, common bios. Make this area of your internet site much more amazing. Intention to give site visitors a little look of your personal background. Show how you started web design, individuals who inspired you to do this, as well as exactly what your company objectives are. Currently you have quite a good feeling for it, although to cover it up, you were uncertain of the vital role that website design plays in a firm's success. Ideally, this write-up will certainly be sufficient to allow you to pass this info on as well as help other individuals with the same inquiries.
