He could vividly remember the temperature of the water as it hit his body. The shock had made him pause for a fraction of a second before he dove down. His feet kicked at the current, his arms propelled him downwards. The visibility in the water was poor but he still caught the flash of blue, her body sinking lower. His fingers curled around the fabric, slipping once from his fingers before he had a stronger hold. He pulled her with him, his lungs fighting for air, burning his insides as he kicked faster, his energy already running low.
His lip trembled as he ran his hand over her hair. His colleagues, his friends working on her to bring her back. He had slipped down the wall the minute he had made it out of the room, soon joined by an unlikely ally. His voice was feverish as he spoke to Addison. “I want to go in there. There’s a risk of brain damage, I need to go in there.” Despite his desire to be in there, he didn’t. Watching Addison walk away, his hands shaking by his side.
Mark had sent him to the locker rooms, practically escorting him until Derek had convinced him he would be okay. He locked the door to the entire locker room. He needed the time to think. He stripped off his wet clothes and headed into the shower, letting the warm water run down his body. His hand pressed against the cold tiles, his head dropped low, the water hitting the back of his neck, the tears running down his cheeks. His breath came in laboured pants as the emotions worked upwards. He turned, back against the tiles and slipped down them, crouching on the floor as he let the sobs rack his body. Nothing could stop them now. He needed her to live. He needed her.
. . . .
Derek leant against the door frame. Just watching. She looked peaceful and yet he had to tell her that her mother had died whilst she had been down. For now, he could bask in the peace. Watching as Meredith woke up, he smiled. “Hey”. He walked forwards, leaning down once he made it to her bedside. Derek placed a kiss on Meredith’s cheek and stepped back. “Meredith...” My mother’s dead, isn’t she? The last few hours had been hell for him. He had been the one to call time of death on her mother. He had tried as hard as he could but it wasn’t enough. “Yes.” Nodding his head as he said the word. As Meredith spoke again, Derek crouched by her bedside, placing a hand on her arm, his thumb stroking over the skin.
Nothing else existed outside of the room. He wasn’t thinking of Addison or Mark or anyone else. It was just Meredith. He climbed into bed beside her, spooning her, his hand on her arm, his thumb rubbing the skin again. He couldn’t believe that warm blood was pumping through her veins. For some time he just gazed at her. Not a word was said until he finally broke the silence.
“I’m not whole if you’re not with me.”

The past year had been hard. Not just emotionally, but on his body too. There wasn’t an easier route he could go down. After his accident, Derek had sustained numerous life changing injuries. After being air lifted to Grey Sloan, Derek was sent straight to CT, the films showing he had a large Intracranial Haemorrhage. He had a broken leg, was bleeding into his abdomen, his arm was broken in two places from where the truck hit the drivers side and despite the doctors best efforts, he had been in a coma for 3 months.
It had been a month since he had woken up. His leg was still in a case and so was his arm. But he was allowed out of his room now. He was allowed to go to the cafeteria or to just chill out in a place other than his room. He had been sleeping in his room when he saw a redhead walk by. He had seen her several times now and every time he had been more and more confused. Due to the accident, Derek had suffered from temporary retrograde amnesia and often struggled to put his memories in line; but her face was unforgettable. Frowning, Derek called out to her.
“Hey!” He called, waiting a few seconds and then calling again. “Hey, you. The redhead.” He pointed and smiled at her. “Yeah, you.” He waited for her to enter his room. “I’ve seen you around here a lot...do you work here?” He wasn’t being creepy, simply curious. He wondered if Meredith knew her. His now 5 month pregnant wife.

There were no words that would describe how good it felt to see his wife again. He had seen her from afar, had helped her through the tough stages in her life after he passed, but having her right in front of him. It just felt right. But he knew he had to help her get back. Their children needed her. They couldn’t lose both parents.
But it was her choice.
“People love you, Meredith. People need you.”
He had to get that point across to her. No matter how much he wanted to hold her in his arms, breathe her in like she had never left. They were inches away, yet he couldn’t get closer.
“Tell me you’ll open your eyes.”
