Sharp, burning pain shoots through his side the moment Ekal shifts his weight enough to try to walk, teeth grit and grip on his staff tightening, a small hiss still escaping him despite his best efforts. The best he manages is to lean a bit more of his weight onto his weapon, lips pressed together in his best effort to smooth over his expression and cram all that pain back into a corner long enough to leave. What's left of Doma Castle is still crumbling and falling apart, soldiers and rebels are still counting their losses, everyone is still mourning a comrade— they hardly need to be distracted by a scratch in a moment like this. He'll be fine, he's had far worse already, and if it comes to it, he knows how to use fire to patch it up.

And Ekal is just about ready to stubbornly limp away while everyone else is distracted to quietly handle this by himself, when he can feel a very specific set of eyes fixed on him, knowing painfully well who it is before even having to turn around and look. Of course. He just cannot go a single damned day without him prying without even having to say a single word, can he?

"I'm fine. What the hell do you want now of all the times?" It's more growled out than actual words, some amount of effort still going into trying to hide the pain that keeps being more and more persistent, just a little pathetic in his attempts to look like he's not having to use his staff as an improvised cane to keep himself standing. Ekal knows he's even less convincing than he believes, and yet he's still trying, if anything at least hoping that amping up that usual abrasiveness of his would be enough to deter the au ra. "Shouldn't you be busy with Gale before he starts blaming himself for all that?" It would be time better spent, wouldn't it?

If only it was that easy. Maybe he would've been able to get out a good while ago then, huh?

Ovan stares quietly, the shifting of midnight and snow carefully trying to keep steady. Even with his hindered vision, the Au Ra can pick out Ekal from the masses of rubble and Doman resistance easily by way of chosen priority. While Gale tends to the victors and fallen, the summoner slips away to get their token Rava—Ifrit-egi follows behind, floating along and eventually circling Ekal as if to get a general handle of his state, despite being nonverbal. Or, well. Ifrit-egi didn't have a mouth. Eyes narrow slightly in silent scrutiny—he doesn't need to verbalize anything himself, if he needed to. He knows Ekal knows exactly what state he's in, and if he was going to crawl off somewhere quietly, Gale would have none of it.

This afternoon would be solemn enough, recouping the losses after besieging the castle. Even Ovan finds some strange finality in this day, having returning after years to eventually see that his hometown could enjoy the silence at the bottom of the sea once more.

"He'll start blaming himself for not making sure you were the first one out of the castle," he points out lightly, although as he comes closer, he can see the outlines of sanguine staining against weathered cottons. This is bad. Ovan doesn't even wait for Ekal's stubborn denial before he takes out his book and flips it right open to the arcane geometries associated with Physick and uses his meager healing utility to alleviate some of the damage. Ekal's lucky that his staff is so well-made to support most of his weight without keeling over, but even when he's done, it's not even close to being enough.

The nearest place to go... probably the House of the Fierce..

"Come, lean on me, or I may resort to carrying you, stabbed again or not. You shouldn't be walking." Pick your battle wisely, Ekal!

The world, elections, so many different countries struggling, online -- everywhere's been pretty crazy lately. I know a lot of you have so much on your minds, and rightly so. When so much is happening all at once, seeing struggles go on in your safe spaces too can make things so much harder to cope with. It is okay to feel sad or upset if your safe space doesn't feel the same way it did right now. It doesn't mean it won't feel safe again one day. Life and situations ebb and flow, and circumstances change, as much as we always want good things to stay the same. Good things can come from change too. Our magnificent and kind friend @xray-vex shared a screenshot on twitter the other day of this tumblr post and I thought it was incredibly appropriate to how a lot of people have been expressing they've been feeling lately.

I know sometimes it feels like you have to respond to that tweet, or get into that discourse, but if you don't have the energy, just remember you don't owe anything to anyone. You are wonderful the way you are, and you deserve to enjoy your space too. If it feels like too much, take a break, watch a new show, read a new book, step away if you need to. Or if re-watching our pirate show would help-- feel absolutely welcome to do that too. Whatever YOU need for YOU. It will be different for everyone, and there is no shame in wanting to do something different to make you feel better. There will always be folks here for you if you decide to step away and come back, so don't be afraid to if you need to okay? We love you crew, we care so much about you, and your health. Be well <3

Hi all! I managed to jinx myself by saying there wasn't a lot to add to the Compendium this week... and then I found a tonne of resources. I can't say I'm complaining about looking like a fool, though! 🪸

A lot of these resources were shamelessly sourced by xiv.sleepyshiba's masterlist! While I tend to endeavour to provide general / creative resources, their master list does contain a lot of discords / guides you can check out around raiding, combat guides, PVP etc. I might have missed. Send them a coffee if you want, for their kit is pretty comprehensive!

I have tried to include sources I can see have been actively maintained but I can't promise all are 100% accurate or up to date. If in doubt, send me a DM.

Additionally, due to the fact I am slowly increasing my collection, the Compendium has expanded its sections from four to five! We now have a dedicated lore section for anyone who wants to learn more about the game. 📖 I'm hoping this will encourage people to write and submit their lore compilations knowing that people will see them.

Ended up a touch Aeryn-heavy this year, though Generic WoL, various NPCs, the other OCs, forays in the FC's AUs, and some supporting family cast members make appearances. There's even a callback to a previous FFXIV Write entry. Lots of Endwalker and Dawntrail due to recency bias, but it manages to span the spectrum from backstories through various expansions.

I only did 1 Free Day, due to having 2 solid ideas I ended up writing for that prompt. It was right at the end of my annual birthday vacation week, so I was pretty rested (may also be why they're among the longer entries!). Unusually, the rest of that week's works are not any longer than the others.

I'm also still working on some original writing, though, so that did cut into fanfiction time.

Over 1,000 words: #6 Halcyon (2,479), #9 Lend an Ear (1,326), #28 Deleterious (1,099), #29 Deleterious 2 (1,231).

Shortest: #2 Horizon Longest: #6 Halcyon

Total: 20,382 words. Not my shortest but far from my longest. Comparing with the previous years, I can see a clear improvement in my grasp of both NPC and OC voices, and more confidence in general.

Even so, "Butte", "Sally", "Bar", and "Zip" were the hardest for me this year, and I may need to warm up to them. I love "Halcyon" for a lot of reasons, and am also fond of the lighter offerings in "Duel" and "On Cloud Nine." I like a lot of the others, particularly when trying to get into NPC heads (even if they're really weird places to be ffs, Zenos).

Not too many shippy entries this year, one of them for one of the AUs, one mostly talking about it rather than seeing it, but I like "Hackneyed" a lot as it's been awhile since I've written about Aeryn & Thancred's literary tastes (and opposite ways of treating their books).

These will eventually be revised and added to Ao3, and then we await next year!

Prompt #5 - Stamp

Briar tilted his head as he watched Vy'thanis spread a clean cloth on his workbench and check a few tools. The half-Elezen was a little puzzled by the Duskwight giving him a slightly nervous look, even as the tall man smiled at him. Briar could practically sense the tension and it made him nervous as well. With a soft hum, he pulled his legs up to crisscross as he settled on the couch, just watching the jeweller.

Briar had never had much chance to see someone work with gems or the finer metals. Goldsmiths and jewellers were uncommon in the Shroud, although woodcarvers could make some beautiful things. Briar had heard once upon a time Gelmorra had been full of skilled artisans who worked with ores and stones to make beautiful things, but it seemed that had been taken from the Duskwights along with many things. Was that perhaps why Vy'thanis seemed a little uneasy? Briar could only hope it was a force of habit and not a true fear that he would betray Vy'thanis. That was not something he would ever do.

Still, he didn't want to rush the other so Briar sat quietly, other than brushing his red bangs back so he could see more clearly. He watched as Vy'thanis took a deep breath, gave him a quick smile and picked up what seemed to be a very plain and ordinary small stone, at least in Briar's eyes. He waited to see what tool the Duskwight would use, but he didn't expect the subtle thrum of aether to fill the room. Briar's ears perked sharply and he straightened in surprise, head tipping to one side again.

Vy'thanis gave him another smile, a knowing one this time, as he cupped the stone between his palms. The feel of magic in the air grew more intense as Vy'thanis rubbed his palms slowly over the dull stone and revealed a sudden myriad of colours. Even the brown was polished to something that gleamed like the finest polished wood but was mixed with spots and stripes of blues, greens, reds, and golds as if a rainbow captured inside it.

The Duskwight smiled as he murmured to himself, lost in his work to Briar's eyes. "So, what do you wish to be, hmm?"

Vy'thanis turned the stone over, smoothing away rough spots with a touch as he considered it closely. Coming to a decision, the jeweller nodded. He touched the stone, shaping it with magic and touch. He didn't change it over much, perhaps not wishing to remove the stone's natural beauty. He coaxed it into a shape similar to an arrowhead, although softened so the edges would not harm the wearer. A little hole appeared at the wider base of the stone and then Vy'thanis ran his hands over it for a final smoothing polish to make a simple, but striking pendant.

"There," the Duskwight said, his deep voice full of pleasure. "Beautiful."

"It is," Briar said quietly, finally speaking as he gave Vy'thanis a look of quiet awe. "What is it? I mean, I see it is in the shape of an arrowhead, but what stone is that?"

"Mmm, most call it 'boulder opal'," he explained. "It's opal found in iron-heavy stones deep in the earth. Rather rare and very beautiful."

"It is," Briar agreed, looking at the pendant. He blinked when Vy'thanis pointedly offered it to him, taking it carefully. He had worried it might be fragile given the delicate play of colour, but the stone was solid and warm in his palms as he cupped it. He turned it back and forth in the light, fascinated by the way the colours gleamed and changed with each movement.

"You should keep it," Vy'thanis said, relaxed now that Briar's response had been nothing worse than admiration and wonder. He hadn't truly expected a greedy response, but people had surprised him before. Still, given Briar's innocent reactions, the Duskwight couldn't help but feel slightly guilty for such worries.

"What?!" Briar looked up, fingers curling around the stone instinctively so he didn't drop it in surprise. "Vyth, I couldn't. It must be terribly valuable."

Vy'thanis waved away the worries. "I have several others that I will work on later. I think this one was meant for you. Here." He took a moment to look through his supplies and a bronze bale with a matching chain. "Here, let me see a moment."

Briar obediently handed the pendant back to watch the Duskwight work again. A little whisper of magic had the bale opened and through the pendant's hole, melded together again in a moment. Vy'thanis threaded the delicate chain through the bale, nodding. The burnished bronze suited the deep browns of the opal well and he leaned closer to Briar. The half-Elezen blushed but didn't move as Vy'thanis measured the chain. A few moments had it just the right length to slip over Briar's head and rest a little below his collarbones.

The opal gleamed, warm and solid against his chest as Briar touched it reverently looking up at the Duskwight again. "It's wonderful."

"It suits you," Vy'thanis murmured before perking. "Ah, before I forget. The last thing for an artisan. Well, at least one that works in jewellery," he chuckled. He turned the pendant so the slightly flatter back was toward the Duskwight. He brushed his fingers over it and his stamp appeared as if carved into the stone. "Every skilled master has his mark."

Briar smiled as Vy'thanis stepped back, picking up and turning the pendant so he could study the stamp. He ran his thumb over it slowly, feeling the delicate lines etched into the stone. "I like that," he said softly. "I can touch it and remember that you made it. For me. Thank you, Vyth."

Vy'thanis was still a moment, eyebrows raised before he blushed a little and smiled. "You're very welcome, Briar."

For once, as the day starts and they're all ready to go, Gale doesn't have even so much as a hint of that usual smile and cheerfulness of his on his face. He grumbles in answer when he's talked to, not entirely paying attention, frown set on his lips, tail swishing from side to side and refusing to stay still.

Everything is so godsdamned itchy.

He's long since figured out that this special kind of hell is unfortunately a natural occurrence, old scales being shed in favor of new ones, and his initial freak out as a child might've been just a little blown out of proportions, but well— it's hard to really do more than just get used to it and grin and bear it when most of his life has been spent far away from others of his kind. At this point, Gale is just sort of assuming that's about all he can do by now, wait it out and hope within the week it's all over.

... Unfortunately, that's easier said than done when clad in heavy armor, weight just enough to rub uncomfortably against scales and forbidding him completely from even trying to scratch any sore spot for some kind of relief. It's going to be a long, painful week by the looks of it—

He's been grumpy and it's been a few days, now. Ovan frowns some, the most visible concern he's shown in awhile. Aloof as he is, Gale's too easy to read, not a single deceptive bone in his body. Even his consistency in being the first to help out wayward souls at the outposts they've all traveled to has dwindled recently. Something's a little different compared to a hidden wound or a festering thought that just wouldn't go away. Even Gale's exhaustion doesn't manifest like this.

The Xaela, however, is certainly shrugging his shoulders and trying to wiggle against something under all of his tank armor.

It takes another two nights before Ovan finally realizes what's going on.

"Gale," he finally calls for him in a moment of rest, an evening left to their own devices. Perhaps there was a benefit to the poor dark knight being as crabby as he currently is when it came to overworking. "Put your head down for a moment." There's a specific piece of information Ovan looks for as he approaches and kneels over him. He carefully parts wefts of hair to reveal the entirety of the black spikes that protrude from Gale's head, not unlike his horns, but far more narrow.

Then, he digs his nail right into his horn, and a layer of a greyish, paper-like shed detaches itself halfway down. "Ah, just as I thought. You're shedding," he comments idly, and then continues to peel the rest of the dried up scales off and out of his hair. "You didn't ask us for help for this, but you've been shedding all week. A hot soak would make this a lot easier on your back scales..." Oh no, there he goes with the dad speak.
