setting: sometime in 2019. 

throughout her life, the thought of having a boyfriend has always been the least of yeeun’s concerns - she never really understood the desire for them or the importance of one. “who needs love?” she’d say to her friends, watching with mild disgust as another one of them cry over her cheating boyfriend for the umpteenth time. “a girl needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle!” she’d declare before ordering another round of shots for everyone on the table. but now, yeeun’s on the other side and she’s the one feeling like the biggest fucking idiot. 

junhyung’s late. it’s 10 pm and he’d promised he’d be here by 8. maybe it wouldn’t be that big of a deal if it was just another ordinary day, but this was their monthsary. god, even saying the word makes her nauseous - why and how did she become the type of girl who cared about the number of months she spent with someone? yeeun lets out a scoff, running her hands through her hair, trying to ignore the growing lump in her throat. she wants to say it’s because he’s her first real boyfriend, the first guy to make it official with her when the rest never really bothered to put a label. but deep down, yeeun knows that it’s because junhyung fucking weaselled his way into her life, made her heart melt and made her all weak and soft when she never asked for it. she had never wanted junhyung; he was just another good-looking boy to her but he kept trying, giving her that stupidly charming smile with those stupidly heart-fluttering words. where did that junhyung go? how did things change so much that now, it’s just yeeun who gives a shit?

god, she sighs, exasperated, feeling nothing but anger, disappointment and humiliation seep into her bones. her eyes make their way to the plates she had set out in front of them; she remembered him telling her once that he liked homemade food so she’d gone out of her way to find some small mum-and-pop shop to get it for him. she’d even asked for a heart-shaped egg. and now, the food stares at her, as if mocking her for putting effort into a sinking ship. she’s baek yeeun, for fuck’s sake, she could get any guy she wanted at her feet yet here she is, spending her valuable time and energy on someone who couldn’t even bother showing up. 

she should’ve known better. this isn’t the first time junhyung has been late - it’s rarer for him to be on time but she’d hoped this time would be different. ha, she laughs to herself as angry tears well up in her eyes, who was she even kidding? fucking hell. the more she thinks about it, the angrier she gets. so, she stands up, ready to throw everything on the table away and pretend like this never even happened, when she hears a knock on the door. maybe it’s junhyung and maybe he has a good fucking excuse for breaking his promise and being two hours late on their six months together.

the habit of wandering around at late hours into the night and coming across interesting characters has got to stop, at one point. it’s almost comical, with the way he makes more strange acquaintances during the night instead of during the day, where people would be more functional. hyunjae doesn’t like conversing anyway, so in the end it doesn’t matter.

he’s not doing much, just a small jog around the block, nothing too extreme considering he had done a lot for the day. looking at his schedule, he doesn’t need to do this, it helps him clear his head though, so he continues on anyway. it’s not until he hears a small whimper and a soft bark that he stops in his tracks, head craning to try and find out where exactly the sound was coming from.

it didn’t take long for him to notice the most lovely dog from the corner of his eyes, which he almost missed due to being shrouded in the darkness of the night. he can’t help but coo at the dog as he approaches, not realising that popping out of nowhere might seem a bit unnerving to those who were passing by—not that there’s anyone else within the premises, right?

he’s wondering how a dog managed to be set loose in campus like that. he crouches down, trying to get the dog’s attention as he called out to it, completely unaware of another presence. “you’re a cutie, aren’t you,” he says absentmindedly into the night, hoping that was enough for the dog to turn to him.

          Being friends with Junhyung has always been fun. He's her personal shopping buddy and he was also her model. When they're not trying to argue over fashion, the sit down at her living room with board games. Like children. They were children in their adult bodies, fighting and arguing over everything when they play games. “Seriously? You won last time because you cheated. You built a goddamn hotel without proper funds!” Hwayoung says as she picks the cat as her piece at the start of the game. “I choose the cat.” She tells him and grabs her kitty ear headband, to get in character before they play the game. “Please, distribute the money properly! The penalty was simple, the winner gets to draw on the loser's face and she isn't going to let her face become his drawing pad for today.

at first, i thought the painting on junhyung's was one of the crucifixion of christ which is already a good sign bc ooo + religious imagery is already suchhh a combo, but!!

turns out, yes! it is indeed the temptation of saint anthony by félicien rops which is even better than just a regular crucifixion of christ imo

saint anthony/anthony the great (251-356) was a christian ascetic who is regarded as the father of all monks. there are accounts of his travel through the desert in egypt that tell of him facing supernatural temptations. this has been the subject of a lot of art, rops' painting being one such example

the different works about the temptation of saint anthony cover a lot of different sources of temptation, but rops' is one clearly about lust and sexual temptation (as is a lot of rops' work)

in the painting, jesus has been removed from the cross by a devil and is now behind it in the painting. in his place is now a naked woman, with a look of triumph on her face, representing the devotion to faith/god being replaced by lust and sins of the flesh

the inscription at the top of the cross, which is supposed to read INRI (Iēsus nazarēnus, rēx Iūdaeōrum = jesus the nazarene, king of the jews), now reads EROS, greek god of passion and fertility embodying the concept of erotic love. the book in front of st anthony is de continentia josephi, about the abstinence of joseph (one of the 12 sons of jacob described in the book of genesis)

and while the themes of temptation, sin, and lust already have a very clear connection to past ooo concepts (sage, libido, tear of god, etc), there's a bit more too.

as much as we all hate freud, his work on sexuality obviously served as part of the inspiration behind the instinct saga

and in his essay delusion and dream in jensen's gradiva, he mentions rops' specific rendition of the temptation of saint anthony

with the main point highlighted in both libido and freud's essay being that lust and desire returns (and returns stronger) in response to repression

(also as a tiny non-sequitur, perhaps the most famous painting of the temptation of st anthony is the one by dali, which also has a pretty big focus on the temptation of lust specifically. dali is referenced in the lyrics of picasso, and around the time dora maar was released, jisung and jaden teased a potential song about dali that was probably going to be for if surface m. given everything that has happened since then, it's possible the song has been scrapped, but it's also possible that it hasn't and regardless, clearly ooo has such a consistent artistic and conceptual thread through all their work)

there's much more to be said about the symbolism in the painting, but i'll leave it here for now today <3 already much to think abt when it comes to what we can expect now for junhyung's solo!!

I’ve been bursting with muse lately so I’m back with another plot call, this time for the starlight event! I have a few ideas and I’d like to put them out there if anyone is interested. happy birthday leo!

he misses the taste of tea.  it reminds him of home.

he leaves the cup of tea untouched, as always.  with time, it grows cold.

“you’re quiet today,”  a voice pipes up from the other end of the counter—junhyung, the barista who serves him tea every time he comes around, despite him never caring for it.  “it’s unlike you to not snark me at least once.”

he keeps his gaze fixated on the storefront window, his lips quirking just a bit to acknowledge junhyung’s provocative words.  that is the extent of what he offers as a response, and while unsatisfactory, junhyung has come to understand his silence.  nothing is wrong;  everything’s just right.

the prolonged silence, peppered with the occasional sigh, is something he appreciates about their strange relationship.  junhyung doesn’t ask questions, doesn’t pry, and he doesn’t tell.  it’s an agreement they’ve formed over the years spent in each other’s company, an unspoken one at that.

at nine, like clockwork, junhyung slinks across the counter and picks up the full cup of tea.  this time, yongfeng chooses to speak:  “how wasteful.”

“wouldn’t be if you drank it.”  there’s a telling glint in junhyung’s eyes as he lifts the cup to take a sip.

his brow furrows ever so slightly.  “tea shouldn’t be drunk cold.”

“i agree.”  regardless, junhyung finishes the tea and moves to place the cup in the sink.  there, he unties his apron—an unnecessary adornment, if not just for the shop’s aesthetics—and hangs it on the coat rack.  his keys jingle.  “ready to go home?”

it’s strange how junhyung calls it that when there’s no colder, no lonelier place.  truly, he has never seen anything more pitiful.

“yongfeng.”

he lifts his head to see junhyung gesturing for him to exit the tea shop through the door.  he chooses to ignore the kind gesture and, instead, materializes through the glass window.  junhyung sighs and locks the door behind him.  it’s just another thursday night.

they make their way back with a second round of silence, yongfeng lingering ahead, junhyung traveling behind at his usual pace.  the night stretches on, with junhyung soon settling into bed, covers drawn up tight.  to his right, in the darkest corner of the room, yongfeng takes his seat, eyes sharp, watching the steady rise and fall of junhyung’s chest.  this has become commonplace, though neither are sure when it all started, and neither have bothered to ask the other  ( there’s no point ).

it’s two in the morning when junhyung turns his back to yongfeng and pulls the covers over his head.

“you’re still awake.”

it’s not a question.  junhyung doesn’t answer.

minutes creep by.  then, yongfeng feels it:  the presence of another.  he feels the corners of his mouth lift into a small snarl as a shadow seeps in through the closed door.  he rises to his feet, the shadow stills.

“we meet again.”

“leave.”  the word is sharp on his tongue, his gaze sharper as he hisses,  “reaper.”

“i’m just doing my job.”

“it’s not his time yet.”

the reaper lifts his chin in junhyung’s direction.  “he asked me to come.”

“and i’m telling you to leave.”  his eyes dart to the bed.  it’s getting worse.  “chess,”  he says while keeping his gaze leveled on the lump that junhyung’s curled up body creates.  “white pawn to e-4.”

on the other side of the room, he hears the reaper sniff.  “always with the strategy games.”

“they’re what i’m good at.  make your move.”

“black pawn to e-5.”

“knight to f-3.”

silence lingers between them for an entire minute before the reaper says,  “knight to c-6.”

in contrast, his response is immediate:  “bishop to c-4.”

for a while, they play in open air with the reaper growing tiresome after just ten minutes.  still, they play on until finally, yongfeng peers over at the reaper, his face expressionless.  “bishop to f-4.  checkmate.”

the reaper narrows his eyes.  “i’ll be back tomorrow.”

“it’s not worth coming.  you’ll lose regardless of what game we play.”

“i’ll take my chances.”  the reaper tilts his head in junhyung’s direction.  “keep an eye on him.  if he comes to me---”  his lips quirk out of amusement.  “---you can’t save him then.”

yongfeng doesn’t answer, and the reaper leaves for the fourth time this week.  it’s only then that yongfeng reacts;  he reaches down and tugs the covers away to reveal junhyung’s head.  junhyung doesn’t look at him, doesn’t bother to move.  instead, he lies there, eyes seeing nothingness, and when he speaks, his words come in a whisper:  “you don’t have to save me.”

“it’s my job.”

junhyung’s eyelids flutter close.  “it’s torturous . . . i’m just another human you have to keep alive.  you should be glad that i’m increasing your count quicker.”

a heavy air settles in-between them.  yongfeng doesn’t react, and junhyung accepts the lost words as a confirmation of truth.  he should’ve known.  no.  he’s known all this time.  yongfeng only cares about the numbers, the counts.  he’s known this since they’ve met, when yongfeng made it painfully clear that junhyung’s a responsibility—but the harsh reality still hurts.

“next time . . just lose.”

“no.”

junhyung’s eyes slit open.  yongfeng isn’t even looking at him.

“this isn’t a matter of pride.”

“i never said it was.”

“then what is it?”

when yongfeng doesn’t answer, junhyung sniffs and turns back around in bed, drawing the covers over his head once more.  idiot.  he rests, uneasy.  the crickets outside chirp, the moonlight seeps through;  he begins to drift asleep.  and it’s only then, in a half-dream state, does he hear yongfeng mutter,  “because you’re worth saving.”

he doesn’t acknowledge it, doesn’t want to acknowledge it, and lets the night consume him.

the following morning, he rouses to the smell of tea.  huh.  sitting up, he peers over at the corner where yongfeng usually resides—he’s gone.  of course, he is.  junhyung turns back over, willing his eyes to close once more, but this time, they find a reason to stay open.

on the nightstand sits a cup of tea, and underneath is a note that reads tea shouldn’t be drunk cold.  a sliver of life breathes into him as he reaches over.  the tea is still hot.

unbeknownst to him, while he sips, yongfeng lingers outside the room, sipping his own cup of tea.  it’s been a while since he’s tasted the bittersweet melody on his tongue, yet somehow . . it still reminds him of home.

I'll pay you good money.” And she knows how he despises those leather pants she keeps making him wear. But he can't do anything about it. She's a great friend. That's what she says. “So, pizza?”

Hi hi!! I have a few ooo questions for you if you feel like answering :) so now that we have yoojung and kb solos and remixes why do you think they got the remixes they did? Do you think they had any say on which one goes on their album or was it just whichever remix was done first? Do you think they had a certain attachment to the og song that was remixed? What songs do you think the other members will get remixed? Which songs do you hope the others will get or which song do you associate the others with? I do love reading your ooo essays and thoughts about their art <3 but I realize this is a lot so feel free to ignore this!!

anon hi hi!! i've been looking forward to answering this ask and today i finally have time, this is such a fun ask <33

for which remixes go with which solo, i definitely think taeyeob and kyubin had at least some say in which ones they got beyond it being whichever was done first. given that wookjin is working a lot on the remixes and he worked closely on begin and be free as well, i can imagine there was discussion w taeyeob and kyu abt which ones they would get (and i imagine this will apply for the future ones as well)

as for specifically why they got the ones they did, i'm less sure. both picasso and desert are ones that were originally largely composed and arranged by producing line themselves + the producers they work w v frequently (nap!er, haeil, ximon, etc). i'm not sure if that actually has anything to do with it, but if it does, i'm also not sure which direction the causality runs. like maybe they're only remixing ones they themselves + ooo producers worked on bc that's logistically and artistically more feasible (i.e. they have all the original files + they have 100% right to do whatever they want w it) or maybe the ones they want to remix are the ones that lend themselves better to their signature art pop style and those naturally would be the ones they worked more closely on themselves

now this gets even further into just my own speculation of potential reasons but: for taeyeob getting picasso, i feel like it makes sense bc to me, dora maar has always been a very taeyeob song and choreo, and in the choreo, he essentially plays the character of dora maar (here's a thread analyzing the choreo, and here's a video essay version of that thread + other dora maar analysis). i doubt they'd do an art pop remix of dora maar since it already is the quintessential example of their art pop style, so to do the companion song to that makes sense to me

and for kyubin getting desert, while he didn't work on the original song actually (though jisung and wookjin did), it is one of their early songs that i feel like is most in line w kyu's preferred k-rnb style. i originally thought kolo was gonna be k-rnb bc that genre is just soooo kyubin and suits his voice especially well, so given that be free wasnt, it makes sense to me that at least the remix was

now for the upcoming remixes, i'm gonna do this in the order that i think they're gonna be released (though i myself am conflicted abt what i think the order is gonna be, so this is just one theory)

i really hope that sungho gets something dramatic that shows off his vocals; i'm personally voting for onlyoneof you because that's one of my faves of theirs, i think prod line can do smth rly cool w an art pop remix of that, and sungho's parts sound incredibleeeee in the original already. but beyond that, i actually dont have much of a guess bc we havent seen much of sungho's personal musical style as prod line and i associate him more with the choreo, naturally

for junhyung, i feel like i might even have less of an idea bc we know he worked on suit dance, and the song that, to me, feels most analogous to suit dance on their discography is instinct. but, i feel like they might only be remixing songs from pre-instinct era bc underground idol is loosely a continuation of the instinct saga (e.g. the styling, the concepts so far, the fact that the name comes from the tracklist of ip2), so it makes sense in a way that they're only remixing things from outside of it. for pre-instinct stuff, i think it'd be interesting to hear a designer art pop remix. it's so stylistically different from the art pop stuff, but the concept is similar to suit dance in a way. but, this one was largely worked on by boycold who doesnt work w ooo regularly (though haeil is credited on designer as well), so if we're going w my earlier theory that they're only remixing stuff they worked on the most, this wouldn't work. much to think about!!

for yongsoo, i would loveeeee to hear a blossom remix bc i think it's such a fun yongsoo song or a asoiaf remix bc i feel like pd2 era looked so good on him and his rap in that one is so good, but neither are ones that the members worked closely on, plus it seems difficult to make either work w the art pop style, so ik they might be off the table. in which case, i feel like onlyoneof you would make sense for yongsoo. it's sentimental, it's sweet, just like he is <3 also he cried to it during the fan party but that's neither here nor there

and finally for wookjin, i would absolutely killllllllllll for a byredo art pop remix. if we got that, i think i would just levitate. that song is already sooooo sexy, and the art pop remix style would fit so well with it. we also know that song is wookjin's baby and one of his favorites if not his no. 1 favorite off their discography, However, if we're going w my earlier theory of them only remixing pre-instinct songs, that wouldn't work. had taeyeob not gotten picasso, i feel like that one would also work for wook, both conceptually (i.e. he plays the character of picasso in the dora maar choreo) and stylistically. i think there's also a good chance that he gets ooo me, though like i said i'm hoping sungho gets that one, so much to think abt here too 🤔🤔 (but sidenote, if they are remixing instinct era songs as well, i think tear of god would also be an excellent choice for sungho and gaslighting an excellent choice for junhyung)

(one song i havent mentioned yet is fragile. i think there's a super high chance that it's gonna get a remix bc it was produced completely by the members + their regular producers, it lends itself well to their art pop style, and it's a pre-instinct song. if it gets remixed, i think it can work with a lot of them. i feel it works with wookjin stylistically a lot, and it works with sungho and junhyung vocally a lot. but i didnt mention it earlier bc a part of me hopes that it doesn't get remixed bc i personally associate that one w jisung a lot, in large part bc his vocals in it are crazzzzyyyy good, so while ik prod line would be able to make an incredible art pop remix of it, it would make me a little :(( to hear it without jisung, even more than their other songs do)

and also a little abt the upcoming solo order, bc it's semi-relevant to this and i have speculations i want to talk abt a;lsdfkjasd: im very much wondering if the other solos are going to be released by unit like kyujung's were or if they wont be. like it ofc makes sense that begin and be free were released back to back, but i'm not expecting the other solos to have stories that are that interconnected, which leaves the question of if they'll still be released back to back

one thing is, i feel like wookjin's solo is near the end. ive mentioned it before, but during a begin-era (i.e. not long ago) fancall, he said that wolo is not close to done yet and that he's already scrapped 3 potential songs for it. given how much of a perfectionist he is, i doubt he'd leave himself so little time to finish wolo esp since i imagine whatever solo is next is already rly close to done if not already recorded, and this fancall was within the last ~month. also in his youtube live yesterday, he showed a tiny spoiler for the next cover he's working on, and while ofc u can work on two things at once, i feel like if wolo was soon, he would be focusing on that and probs wouldnt have another cover planned for the near future (i also feel like all the covers he's been doing recently are in part an exercise for him to try out diff styles and figure out what he wants to do for wolo)

so if his is one of the last two (i personally think it's last) and they're releasing by units, that means that the next one has to be either sungho or junhyung, in which case my bet would be on sungho. but if his is not one of the last two or if they're not releasing by units, for some reason i also feel like the next one could be yongsoo's. but another thing is i feel like it also makes sense for rolo to be last bc that would mean that sungho gets to release his during his birthday month, but then that also throws a whole other wrench into my current theories, so who knows. my current strongest bet is on sungho>junhyung>yongsoo>wookjin, but also ik there's a few other orders that are also super possible

My favorite muse(s) of theirs and why:

Can’t tell :D I don’t really like picking favourites because there’s something special about each muse and welp I’d rather just write with as many of his as I can than think about too long whom I like the most out of the bunch. But I can say that at the moment, I am most attached to Junhyung because I’ve been interacting with him the longest. Besides, I wanna look after him ;w;

My favorite interaction/thread of theirs:

Nope, can’t pick one :3 I like both interactions (I mean I could say freaking thank you for the one with Junhyung because it’s so interesting and it really helps me for Axra and honestly I love it but the other we just started sounds so funny and well).

My thoughts on their unique characterization/interpretation of their muse(s):

Hmm, I love the way he writes the inner monologue (no idea why I’m not talking to you directly, just ignore it, my fingers are sticky because I just ate a tangerine and it’s hard to type which has nothing to do with anything but whatever) of his muses, they really get you hooked on the inner workings of a muse and create the muse’s voice beautifully. Like, I’m pretty sure without icon or name, I’d be able to tell when he’s writing different characters, and that’s super and super important :3

My thoughts on their writing style as a whole:

I adore it! :D It’s recognizable in its iiraeth-ness and to be honest, reading anything he writes always puts me in a good mood? His writing style has this certain something to it where everything just… flows, everything looks like it fits perfectly and a hundred percent, and it makes me a very comfortable reader.

Well, I’m going to be honest, it’d be funny to see Jaehyuk deal with a very weird person on his radio show, it’d be hilarious :3 But no pressure, I enjoy your muses however they may be :3

Other Roleplayers I’d Recommend To Them:

To be honest, I don’t remember if you already interact with her, but I’m recommending @pvlchritudine because they got a TON of superb muses to offer (if you’re not mutuals tho keep in mind she’s private) and she’s super great as well. I always recommend @dcmnation because Naka has such an interesting and amazing repertoire of muses to offer, if you’d like to have your characters meet something incredibly unique and challenging than hit her up.There’s also @littlcstarling who’s got a cool variety of muses too and who you could hit up for the diversity, which you could hit up @intergalacticxmisfits for as well and I’ll stop here otherwise I’ll never stop gushing about my mutuals.
