Hi I don’t know if anyone has asked you this already, but do you find it strange that we are never given either of the Nie brothers’ given names nor Jin ZiXuan’s, when it’s common practice (at least in the show) to address yourself by your given and courtesy names?

Hey there! :D No, no one has asked me this yet, ahaha.

To be honest, I don’t find it strange, but that’s mostly because I think MXTX assigned names as it was convenient/as it suited her. I do think in some cases, you can try to find textual reasons, like limited POV (@hunxi-guilai made a post about how that might explain why Jiang Cheng is disproportionately referred to by birth instead of courtesy name here).

In the case of Jin Zixuan, I think that makes a lot of sense. Since mdzs and cql are largely from Wei Wuxian’s POV, and he clearly already knows Jin Zixuan, there’s no need for him to reintroduce himself, which is usually where we get people mentioning both their names. I don’t have any textual reasoning for the Nie bros’ lack of birth names ahahaha.

I will, however, use this as a springboard to mention a few things I find generally interesting about the way naming conventions appear to vary between sects/interesting points about address in general. There’s like no deep meta here, just like. “I noticed this thing, and I think it’s interesting”. (hope that’s okay /o\)

One: The Jin sect is the only sect that uses generational character markers (Guang, Zi, Ru). Establishing that convention makes Jin Guangyao’s courtesy name a massive slap in the face I think. (a, for giving him the wrong generational marker, which implies that he’s never actually going to be recognized as a son/that jgs really just didn’t care to even get it right, and b, for reusing his birth character instead of bothering to give him something new–every other character who has a birth and courtesy name gets two entirely unique names, but not jgy.) It’s a cool way of implying certain things about his status, how his father regards him without stating it outright, how others might see him because of that etc.

Two: The Wen sect appears to almost exclusively use birth name–in fact, the only two characters from the Wen sect revealed to have courtesy names are Wen Ning (Wen Qionglin) and…. Wen Ruohan. Well, and Wen Zhuliu, but he was originally Zhao Zhuliu, so idk if that really counts, since his courtesy name predates his induction into the Wen sect. Wen Qing, Wen Chao, and Wen Xu are referred to by birth name only by both themselves and everyone around them for the entirety of the story, which seems rather strange, given that all of them are high-ranking members of the family (Wen Xu is the heir??). Sizhui is not given a courtesy name by his birth family, but by Lan Wangji.

(an aside, it’s been mentioned before by others, but historically, courtesy names were bestowed upon adulthood; however, in CQL, we see Wei Wuxian picking out Jin Ling’s courtesy name before he’s born. it’s possible this is a practice that differs from sect to sect, but again, very little to no textual support for that speculation ahahaha)

Wen Ning’s courtesy name is used only once by Wei Wuxian in a moment of extreme distress at the Guanyin temple. It reads, to me, like switching registers to indicate the high emotional levels of the situation rather than anything about respect/social relations, in the same way that like, lwj switching between “wei ying/wei wuxian” can indicate moments where emotions are running high. I hc that the intimacy/distance of birth/courtesy names are switched in the case of Wen Ning/Wen Qionglin (ie, only people who are intimate with him would be expected use Qionglin) but that has absolutely zero basis in any fact, cultural convention, or textual evidence. I just like it because it warms my heart. feel free to roast me for it, i can accept that criticism.

Three: Both the Lan sect and the Nie sect address by courtesy name, even within their own family. (Lan Qiren calls his nephews “Wangji” and “Xichen”. Sizhui and Jingyi call each other by courtesy name. Nie Mingjue calls his brother “Huaisang”.) Why? we don’t know! We could maybe try and meta about it in the case of the Lan sect, I think (they’re more formal in general etc.), but we have so little knowledge of the Nie sect that I think it’s functionally pointless to try and dig there. I feel like trying to come up with any plausibly supported reason is going to be a stretch.

Four: A’Cheng vs A’Xian. Jiang Yanli uses Jiang Cheng’s birth name to form his diminutive, but uses Wei Wuxian’s courtesy name to form his. I’ve seen people ask why she doesn’t call him A’Ying, which would be more consistent, but I hc that this is because “Wuxian” was given by her father, so her using “A’Xian” is meant to strengthen that familial tie. “Ying” is from before he was part of their family. “Wuxian” is something given to him by the Jiang family, so using it, I think, is a subtle way of emphasizing how much she really considers him to be her brother. (If you’re curious, in the flashback when he first arrives at Lotus Pier, the audio drama has her calling for him as “A’Ying”.)

Five: Yu-fu’ren. I mentioned this on an addition to another post a while ago, but I’ll copy the relevant passage from chapter 51 here again:

虞夫人就是江澄的母亲，虞紫鸢。当然，也是江枫眠的夫人，当初还曾是他的同修。照理说，应该叫她江夫人，可不知道为什么，所有人一直都是叫她虞夫人。有人猜是不是虞夫人性格强势，不喜冠夫姓。对此，夫妇二人也并无异议。

Yu-fu’ren was Jiang Cheng’s mother, Yu Ziyuan. Of course, she was also Jiang Fengmian’s wife [fu’ren], and once cultivated with him as well. By all reason, she should be called Jiang-fu’ren, but for some unknown reason, everyone had always called her Yu-fu’ren. Some guessed that perhaps because Yu-fu’ren had a forceful temperament, she disliked taking her husband’s name. Neither husband nor wife raised any objections to this.

I think this is actually a pretty interesting microcosm of the themes of mdzs. We don’t actually know why Yu Ziyuan is called Yu-fu’ren; we’re given the equivalent of a rundown on local gossip and that’s it. I feel like it embodies a little bit of the “what people say about you becomes the truth and then influences your fate” theme that runs through mdzs. Did Yu Ziyuan WANT to be called Yu-fu’ren? Did she request it? Is her husband actually fine with it? The audience doesn’t get any of their internal landscape and is instead given a leading interpretation of the situation. How is our opinion of her then influenced?

To be clear, I don’t necessarily think that was necessarily the intention of this passage (maybe it was! or maybe mxtx just wanted to call her yu-fu’ren and realized she had to come up with some justification for it. i really couldn’t tell you); I just think that regardless of intention, its existence in relation to the larger themes of the novel can present a cool juxtaposition, if you dig a little bit.

Six: Song Lan, a respected cultivator, is more often referred to by his birth name, including people who are not intimate with him (normally, this would be rude), while Xiao Xingchen (who is intimate with him) calls him by courtesy name. Why?? We also don’t know. Does this lend support to my earlier headcanon about Wen Ning/Qionglin having a reversed intimacy/distance implication?? not… not really, but I like to think it at least kind of shows a precedent….. orz.

Seven: I find Xue Yang’s courtesy name, Xue Chengmei (成美), really fun ahaha. It comes from the phrase, 君子成人之美, an idiom that essentially means, “a gentleman always helps others attain their wishes”. Jin Guangyao gave it to him (not sure if this is canonical or extracanonical–i heard about it in an audio drama extra, much like how i get all my information orz) which I think is greatly amusing for obvious reasons.

Eight: Lan Wangji actually changes Sizhui’s birth name, even though you wouldn’t be able to tell just from hearing it. His original birth name is 苑, an imperial garden, but Lan Wangji changes it to 愿, as in wish (愿望) and to be willing (愿意), among other very beautiful sentiments. partially im sure to protect his identity, but also because. you know.

Basically all this is just to say, I think the naming/address conventions in mdzs are pretty weakly conceived, but you can find interesting things in them if you go looking! and we all know i love to go looking /o\

Richard x reader

Everyone gathers their stuff and head out. Aiden, Scarlett and Graham are in front of you and Richard. An officer sees you heading for the door and escorts you all to your vehicles making sure there is nothing attached under them to track or explode. When he gives you all the ok to head out you wave and thank him. He nods and waves back.

 You all are quiet on the trip out there. Rich pulls in and Mark is waiting in the yard with Phantom.

 The moment the dog sees you in the window his tail starts wagging like an airplane propeller and he looks up and whines at Mark. “Just a minute, Phantom. She’s right there, now hush.” He tells the dog, who quiets.

 Graham helps you out of the car and you head over to Mark. Phantom can tell you’re upset and looks up to Mark who signals ‘go’ and Phantom rushes over to you and is on his hind legs leaning on you, whining and licking your face and nuzzling you almost knocking you on your ass. Richard steadies you and you start to giggle and hug the big dog. His tail is whipping back and forth, and he keeps licking your face and hands.

 Everyone chuckles and you finally say, “Ok Phantom, that’s enough.” and you signal to ‘stop’. He immediately stops and sits, waiting for you.

 Mark grins, “Harley, why don’t you reintroduce him to Aiden and Scarlett to make sure he remembers them. It’s a good idea to do this with people he hasn’t seen in a bit or if they are new and haven’t been around him a lot.” Mark tells you.

 You nod and bring Phantom over to Aiden, “Phantom do you remember Aiden? He’s my friend and is ok.” You say. Aiden holds his hand out and Phantom sniffs it and licks it. He gives him a “wuff” and rubs his head on Aiden’s hand, who starts to scratch his ear and Phantom’s foot starts thumping on the ground, making everyone smile.

 Scarlett squats down and holds out her hand. “Do you remember me, Phantom?” She asks. The dog sniffs her hand and licks it and gives her a “Wuff” too. He rubs his head on her hand and she pets his head. “Good boy!” she tells him, and his tail starts wagging.

 You look down at Phantom and give a sharp whistle to get his attention, he looks up and you motion ‘come’ he turns and follows right at your side as you walk over to Mark.

 He grins and nods. He has you practice the other basic commands he taught you the day before then shows you the new ones. You practice them like you did before with the other commands, then you all head over to the field again.

 Mark puts the practice service vest on Phantom, and you motion for the dog to ‘sit’ and ‘stay’. Phantom plops his butt down and looks at you, then up to Mark.

 Mark teaches Aiden and Scarlett the basic hand signals and gives them and Richard all a sheet with all the commands the dog has been taught.

 Aiden looks at the words, “Is this Khuzdul?!?!” he asks surprised.

 Mark grins. “Yup, we are Tolkien fans here and since few know the language, it is better that way, so someone doesn’t accidently give him a command to attack or such...” He explains, “…and when the command IS given, the attacker won’t be alerted to what the command was for until it is too late.” He adds with a smirk.

 He has you take off your jacket and give it to Richard. Mark covers Phantom’s eyes and tells you to go out in the field somewhere farther out and hide. You do so and make your way out into the field and about halfway out, you hide behind a large boulder and tuck yourself in, making yourself as small as you can.

 Mark waits a few minutes for the scent to be blown away. He explains to your friends that they need to be able to command Phantom in case something happens to you and he gets loose or you send him to go find help.

 He explains to them to find something you wore recently or sat on recently that has a fresh scent of you and then they are to hold it to his nose, tell him to ‘find Harley’ and give him the signal to ‘track’ then ‘go’. He tells them to keep Phantom on the leash otherwise he will take off and you won’t catch him.

 Once he has explained everything, he has Richard go first. He hands your jacket and the leash to Richard, and nods.

 Rich squats down to Phantom and says, “Phantom, find Harley.” And he holds out the jacket to the dog to sniff. Phantom buries his nose in it for a moment, getting your scent, then looks up at Richard who signals, ‘track’ and ‘go’.

 Phantom “wuffs” then lifts his nose to the air and then down to the ground. He starts moving out into the field, Richard and Mark following. After sniffing the air and ground a few more times, he finds you and you praise him as you stand up.

 Richard is grinning and pets Phantom. “Good Boy!” he tells the dog. Who sits and looks all smug that he found you, making Richard laugh.

 Mark tells you to stay here and when they get back to your friends, that he’ll cover Phantom’s eyes again and then you are to find a different hiding spot elsewhere in the field. You nod and watch them head back.

 Mark repeats this process with all your friends until they have all been trained to instruct Phantom to find you if you are separated from the dog.

 Once everyone was trained in that, Mark tells you to come back. You do and he moves on to instructing everyone how to command the dog if you are being attacked by someone.

 He tells you if that ever happens to drop Phantom’s leash immediately so he can attack if you command it. Mark goes and puts on the padded armor and then comes back. He has a rubber knife with him.

 “Ok, I’m going to pretend to attack Harley, she is going to drop the leash and Richard, I want you to get Phantom’s attention, and give him either the verbal or the hand signal to ‘destroy’. Then when I tell you, give him the verbal command to ‘stop’. Richard nods. He looks at the sheet and remembers how to say the words, then nods again.

 Mark moves behind you and tells you don’t move when someone gives the commands, that way you don’t get bit by accident. You nod. He moves in position behind you, and puts the rubber knife by your neck and wraps an arm around your front, holding your far wrist.

 Mark nods to Richard and Mark tells you to drop the leash. You do and he starts to drag you backwards.

 Richard says, “Phantom!” and says, “Hrestvog!” in a commanding tone and the dog instantly turns to Mark and raises his heckles and growls and charges him. The dog jumps and grabs his arm with the knife and pulls it away from your neck.

 Once Phantom gets Mark down on the ground, he nods to Richard and Richard says, “Phantom, Etzil!” and Phantom immediately stops and goes to sit by Richard’s feet.

 You, Aiden, Mark & Graham grin hearing Richard speak the Khuzdul using his “Thorin” voice & tone.

 Mark tells you that as soon as Phantom gets the attacker away from you, then you can move and get away from the attacker safely. You nod.

 He repeats the exercise with each of your friends, though Scarlett struggled with the pronunciation. Aiden giggled and helped her with it till she could say it correctly.

 Next Mark showed you all what to do if someone attacks from the front with a knife or gun. Mark went to the shed and switched the rubber knife for a rubber gun, then came back. He tells you that if this happens, to release Phantom and anyone who knows the commands can get his attention and tell him the command to ‘destory’.

 They all nod. He says, “Ok, Harley, drop the leash. He holds up the gun and stands in a threatening pose.

 Richard looks at Mark and Mark nods. “Phantom,” he says, “Hrestvog!”

 Phantom immediately attacks without warning and knocks Mark over on his back and is going at his arm holding the gun, keeping the gun both away from you and also away from his own body.

 Once he gets Mark to let go of the gun, Mark nods to Rich and Richard says, “Etzil!” and Phantom stops immediately.

 Mark gets up and nods.

 You call Phantom back and praise him. Mark nods and repeats the process with each person calling the commands.

 Once everyone has had a chance to practice this technique, Mark repeats the processes with you all just using the hand gesture for ‘destroy’.

 Then Mark shows you what to do if you’re alone and are attacked. Once all the training for that is done, he takes off the padded gear and puts it into the shed.

 Next, he explains what to do if you are ever severely injured, for example a terrorist attack or car accident or something where you are not able to give commands, but they are.

 He has you lay down in the grass on a large piece of cardboard to protect your clothes and pretend to be injured.

 He explains that if they tell Phantom to be a shield, he will either stand over your torso or will lay on it, depending on your injury. He will act as your shield and take any damage or will attack if he feels someone might threaten you unless they know the word for ‘stop’.

 Mark explains, that if they tell Phantom to ‘Guard’ you, it is to be used if someone is, for example, trying to rob someplace you’re in or there’s an armed gunman in a building with you, like what happened at the coffee shop this morning, Or something along those lines.

 He tells them Phantom will attack if they command it otherwise, he will just act menacing and try to scare off the predator. He also explains you can use it if you want him to protect something like the safe or your purse or backpack. Anything you find important that you may need to leave unattended for a while.

 They nod.

 He tells them to practice these commands now. They each take turns telling Phantom to ‘shield’ you and to ‘guard’ you.

 Mark explains that with any of these commands, Phantom will not allow anyone outside his ‘pack’ or a uniformed officer, paramedic or firefighter, near you or the object he was told to protect/guard, unless they know the command for ‘stop’. He tells you all the emergency first responders in this area are all trained to know the word for ‘stop’ if they see a dog performing these actions.

 He recommends you keep a copy of the cheat sheet in Phantom’s vest and one on your persons or in your purse / bag in case something happens to you and Phantom comes to someone trying to get you help, they will find the sheet in his vest and be able to give him the proper commands.

 You nod.

 Mark instructs everyone on the phrase ‘Gauhnith Goroth’ which means ‘safe/good place’ and tells them that this command instructs Phantom to take you someplace he deems safe.

 He tells them it is used when you are injured and can be moved safely. Mark tells them Phantom will grab whatever he can on you and will do his best to drag you away from harm.

 Mark has you lie down in the grass on a piece of cardboard, again and then says, “Phantom, Gauhnith Goroth!” and the dog comes over to you and gently grabs the collar of your jacket near your neck, and starts to tug you across the grass. Mark says, “Etzil!” and Phantom stops and lets go of your jacket.

 You sit up and tell him, “Good Boy, Phantom!” and he gets the smug look again on his face.

 Mark leads everyone back to the barn after he takes off the practice vest from Phantom. He tells you to practice the non-attack commands often with Phantom to help you both to remember the commands.

 He tells you that you are all welcome to come out with the dog to practice the attack commands any time and that the padding is found in the shed.

 You all nod and he hands you Phantom’s official vest with his name on it and all the patches indicating what he is trained for. A copy of the cheat sheet, Phantom’s official service dog paperwork and Mark’s card are all in a see-through pouch on Phantom’s vest. He suggests you put the papers in a plastic zipper baggie when you get home then put them back in the vest.

 He apologizes, “My daughter used the last one the other day and forgot to tell us we needed more, otherwise I would have put them in one.” He tells you.

 You chuckle and tell him that it’s ok. He gives you a piece of paper with the vet they use as well as the list of food, heartworm meds, and flea/tick meds he uses and when they were last given to Phantom.

 He asks if you have any other questions and no one does so he gives you the leash and tells you, “Phantom is all yours now, Harley. Good luck with the problems with the ex. And come visit anytime.”

 You grin and squat down to Phantom. “Should we go home now, boy?” you ask him. His tail starts thumping and he gives you a “Woof”. Everyone grins and you thank Mark again for all the training. He smiles and waves as you all head to the cars with Phantom.

 “Now what are we gonna do?” Aiden asks. You all shrug.

 Graham thinks for a moment, “Aid, can ya give me a lift back to the hospital so I can get my Jag and meet you guys somewhere?”

 “We’ll meet you at Aiden’s apartment, Sweetie.” Scarlett tells you. Everyone gives you a hug. Graham hugs you a little longer than the others. “Be safe, Sweetheart.” He whispers to you and kisses the top of your head. You nod and tell him, “You too, Pops. Thanks for getting me Phantom!” Which makes him smile.

Hello, I’m glad you asked! Before I get into it I just want to say that I’m grateful you are doing some research, are willing to ask questions, and that we can have this conversation peacefully. I looked up the article that you are referencing and it does make some seemingly good points, but also seems biased and only scratches the surface. For anyone else who would like to read it: link. My partner is going to help me answer this because it is a very multifaceted topic- thus this will be a long post. Please note most of our experience is based on New York state.

Let’s first address the artificial overpopulation argument.The article seems to say that state agencies purposely create habitat that willincrease deer populations for hunting. They mention clear cutting and plantingfood plots.

Clear cuts:

It is true due to colonial clearcuts we have lost much of our old growth stands in America. However, allforests should not be old growth. In a natural setting forests go throughdisturbance (ice, wind, fire, natural inundation, etc), this resets what istypically referred to as forest succession. Some trees like the pitch pine Pinus regida have what’s called aserotinous cone. These serotinous cones are glued shut and can only open torelease seeds once fire has partially burned them. They have adapted thisstrategy as they would be out competed by other trees which are less resistantto fire, so this tree saves its seeds until fire comes through. In the animalworld we have species like the Kirtland’s warbler Setophaga kirtlandii, these birds can only nest in jack pines, Pinus banksiana less than 15 years old.The New England cottontail, Sylvolagustransitionalis is declining more than ever due to a lack of earlysuccession (freshly disturbed sites).

The main problem is disturbance forforests will also disturb humans. It seems like a no brainer, if we can aim to eliminate theharmful hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelgestsugae why not another destructive invasive species? In short the publicwas so outraged that the state government wanted to kill the “symbol of love”the management plan was rapidly scratched. Just because something makes sensefrom a management perspective does not mean it can be implemented! My salary isnot paid by the tax payers, all management is not aided by nature lovers,hikers, bird watchers, or animal rights groups. My salary is paid by theRobert-Pittman act and hunting licenses. When you buy a gun and a huntinglicense you’re not just helping deer, you’re helping most species. State agenciesopenly want better deer hunting, however overpopulated deer do not generallymake for good hunting.

Would a Wildlife Management agency support hunting?Absolutely. People rarely raise money for biologists any other way. That’s alltrue. Hunting is not an incentive for the biologists who genuinely want to seea more sustainable ecosystem and understand wildlife, but rather the incentivefor the public to support them. What wildlife management units want is toencourage farmers to manage their land in a way that supports and preserveswildlife, instead of just pushing wildlife out and solely favoring ‘game’/deerto hunt. I don’t think wildlife management workers have ever called for addingfood plots to state/federal land and refuges. Even though its public land it istypically illegal for the public to disturb the land by planting anything.Biologists are free to manage it as best for all wildlife and we can see thatfood plots to artificially boost deer populations are not part of the plan.This article is focusing on private land, where a biologists can’t see afragmented and unhealthy habitat and just decide to fix it. They need toconvince the land owner that it will benefit them and most often land ownerswill only cooperate if it supports better hunting (even though it’s reallybenefiting soil, plants, birds, entire ecosystems, etc on top of it). Severalstate agencies even have programs to incentivize agricultural land owners totransform farmland into wetlands (wetland reserves programs) to decrease theeffects of soil erosion and support all native wildlife.

Humans:

               Highways,lawns, agriculture, and roads provide more edge habitat than deer can use. Illegalfeeding, or unintentional feeding (ornamental plants or gardens), and wintershelter from homes all cause overpopulation. It has been observed that yardingdeer will often seek the warm of a home as a windbreak above conifer stands.Before hunting regulations the white-tail deer was near extirpated from NewYork. In fact New York did lose the wild turkey, Meleagris gallopavo from the 1850s until it was reintroduced inthe 1950’s. No matter if you have a very liberal season or a very conservativeseason, the amount of ducks dead does not change. We could allow the full 20%to die off and lose the economic value (hunting license, gas, coffee, ammo,staying at hotels, camping, etc), but in the case of many species that revenueis critical in protecting them. Humans destroy habitat, pollute ecosystems, andbuild projects right over key habitat. Without that revenue we wouldn’t have aDEC or DNR to clean spills, conduct environmental impact statements, monitorpopulations, or survey for T&E species.

Carrying Capacity

               Inshort, hunting is extremely important. The way humans are you wouldn’t havedeer without regulatory hunting. People would definitely poach illegally and decimatepopulations without regulation (like what happened to the Passenger Pigeon) orunintentionally produce an overpopulation through simply owning a home andgarden. Overpopulations of deer encourage the very factors (disease, stuntedgrowth, early death (i.e smaller antlers)) hunters don’t want to see. If theright amount of people harvest deer, you won’t have population booms and busts,you’ll only have that compensatory portion of the population utilized. Thearticle also says that good genes are weeded out through hunting. The strongaren’t necessarily the ones who survive when it comes to natural deaths, it’s agame of luck. The article argues that only trophy animals are hunted so thepopulation’s genes suffer, but hunting seasons begin during the end of thebreeding season. So any of the ‘trophy’ deer that are harvested will stilllikely have offspring because they are usually the first to breed. It also doesnot give deer the credit they deserve. The biggest bucks are typically theoldest and they didn’t get to that age by being stupid. It’s arguable that theyrecognize the hunting season and will stay hidden away or in extremely ruralareas to avoid it. The majority of hunters will probably never even see deerpast the age of three years old during hunting season. Here is a journal thatattempts to determine the causes of the decline in bighorn horn sizes (theproblem mentioned in the article). It does not seem that hunting pressure is one of the main causes, even with thelargest trophies being sought out.

Finally my biggest issue is theending paragraph because they are so incredibly correct! And then they go tothe other extreme. No, not every person in America should hunt. That would becompletely unrealistic and decimate wildlife. People cannot be trusted when itcomes to moderation, and excess harvesting is no exception. For the same reasonthat everyone hunting wouldn’t work, everyone becoming vegan would not work.Agriculture does a lot of native habitat damage and when harvested with machine(which would be unavoidable if every person was vegan) results in mass animaland insect death. The only way for everyone to be completely cruelty free is toeither sustainably gather wild edibles or grow your own food, preferablyharvesting wild invasives and growing plants without pesticides. Even thatposes a problem, if every person harvested their own wild edibles we’d depletethe natural resource. 

So to conclude: things are neverever cut and dry. Yes, wildlife management does encourage hunting but thatargument does not necessarily provide all the facets that go into thatdecision. Yes, feeding deer with human food is definitely dangerous (here’sa little handout about that), but farmers can be incentivized to plant thingslike clover that they will eat. Hunters can be jerks, I’m not denying that, buthunting is not inherently about raising deer or trophies to kill for sport.Vegetarians are not wrong. Vegans are not wrong. The irony is we need ALL ofthese lifestyle variations to survive.

In yesterday’s post I talked about how our lack of nature literacy can be deadly to animals. It’s the latest in a series of posts I’ve made concerning anthropocentrism, or putting humans at the center of everything rather than as part of a vibrant global community. Coincidentally, not long after I made that post, I reblogged a post on Tumblr concerning the problem with “rescuing” baby animals that aren’t actually abandoned. I observed that many baby animals never survive their first year, and it’s nature’s way for them to become food for other animals that do end up surviving to adulthood. Considering that not all wildlife does well in rehabilitation centers, even when cared for by professionals, I consider it a better idea to leave young, injured or ill animals out in nature where they’ll feed others.

I know it sounds cruel, especially coming from someone who does very much appreciate the other species on this planet. When we’re faced with a tiny, fuzzy, cute little baby bunny, we often want to do everything in our power to save it. We want there to be a happy ending for this creature that has intersected with our lives. And there’s nothing wrong with having that sort of compassion for another living being; truth be told, compassion’s been a little thin on the ground.

But predators get short shrift. It starts from young childhood, where we’re fed stories and cartoons with predatory animals being the Bad Guys, and their hapless victims–who invariably come out on top–are prey animals, bunnies and ducks and pigs and mice. This bias can last a lifetime. In his seminal work, Of Wolves and Men, Barry Holstun Lopez examines in detail the reasons many human cultures, particularly European and American, have so badly persecuted gray wolves. It is impossible to boil down his invaluable observations in just a few sentences, but this quote, from page 140, says a lot:

The hatred [of wolves] has religious roots: the wolf was the Devil in disguise. And it has secular roots: wolves killed stock and made men poor. At a more general level it had to do, historically, with feelings about wilderness. What men said about the one, they generally meant about the other. To celebrate wilderness was to celebrate the wolf; to want an end to wilderness and all it stood for was to want the wolf’s head.

Look at the animals that we try to protect in our suburban lawns and urban gardens: baby bunnies, baby deer, baby birds. These are the animals who have wound their way around our human-dominated landscapes without doing too much trouble. Sure, they might get into the lettuce and dig up the carrots, but you don’t need to fear for your life if a few does are grazing in your yard early in the morning.

Contrast what happens if there’s an alleged mountain lion sighting on the fringes of a neighborhood that has recently chewed up wildlife habitat. People are frantic, telling their children not to leave the yard and keeping housepets indoors. Missives go out telling people how to protect themselves against cougar attacks. The local game officials get calls from people wanting the “threat exterminated”. And plans to reintroduce large predators from areas where they’ve been extirpated are met with similar resistance out of fear of what could possibly happen.

We don’t even consider the needs of smaller predators. Foxes, weasels, hawks and other smaller predatory critters are better able to adapt to human encroachment on wilderness than their larger counterparts like bears and lynx. But we humans manage to find all sorts of ways to interfere with their livelihoods, from removing hiding places and den sites, to poisoning their rat and mouse prey with anticoagulant poisons that kill the predator hapless enough to eat the poisoned prey. And we further cause problems when we take away injured, ill, or merely poorly hidden baby animals that represent an easy meal.

That “easy meal” is important, especially in spring. Rabbits and deer aren’t the only ones raising young. So are foxes, coyotes, hawks, bobcats and other hunters. And while the babies are too young to hunt for themselves, it’s up to the adults to feed not only themselves but their entire brood as well. The less energy and time a predator has to invest in finding food and bringing to back to the den or nest,  the more food they can collect, and the more likely it is that at least some of their young will survive to adulthood. Nests of baby rabbits in the grass, a fawn tucked away under a bush, a baby bird that’s fallen out of the nest–these all represent quick sources of nourishment with low risk and high return.

Moreover, not every baby animal taken in to a rehab facility will survive. My first job out of college was working at a veterinary clinic that treated both domestic and wild animals (with the necessary permits, of course.) While baby birds did fairly well, simply wanting someone to feed them every hour or so, baby rabbits fared much more poorly. Wild rabbits are very easily stressed out by humans, and even the process of feeding them with eyedroppers could be too much for them to handle. And if an animal dies in a rehab facility, its remains are likely to either be thrown out or buried; either way, out of reach of predators that could really use the calories.

So this spring, if you happen across a nest of baby bunnies or a fallen fledgling, I suggest leaving them exactly where they are. Either they’ll be rescued by their parents, figuring things out on their own if they’re old enough, or they’ll feed the next generation of foxes and other predatory critters. If you’re going to appreciate nature, appreciate ALL of it, not just the cute, fuzzy, human-friendly portions thereof. Nature’s cycles developed long before we began messing with them, and even our well-intended actions can cause more harm than good.

Not our MH but one visiting the park

It was one of those will we or won’t we Monday morning’s when the weather really didn’t know quite what it wanted to do. In the end I decided I will and Sarah decided she wouldn’t, she wanted to continue working on the new seat covers for our motorhome. So it was left to me to get myself up to Shakespear Regional Park and check it out for this blog and as a place for future visits.

The peninsular that is Whangaparoa, is situated about 40 kms north of the Auckland CBD. When I met Sarah 30 years ago it was still dominated by holiday baches one of which her family have owned since 1962. So it’s rather sad to see the extensive housing that makes it just another suburb of Auckland today. Urban spread gone wild!

However once you reach the end of the road and arrive at Shakespear Regional Park it’s almost like being magically transported to another part of New Zealand as the houses disappear and rolling farm land takes their place. Auckland City Council is actually the largest farmer in the Northern region.

The whole area of the peninsula that contains the camping area and beyond is now a land island with a huge predator free fence. This has allowed the reintroduction of native species such as Kiwi making this a very special place  as one of the only places with free roaming Kiwi in Auckland. The Park has also had extensive plantings to regenerate native bush and wetlands areas.

Once in the park proper you turn left uphill towards the two camping areas at Te Haruhi Bay. But first it’s a quick photo op at the giant picture frame that dominates the top of the hill overlooking the bay. It certainly was a picture of a view that morning.

Into the park proper to reach a reminder that this park used to be someones farm with this one of the few original buildings still remaining on the property. The original farm house is now a YMCA camp. The park was officially opened in December 1977 by the then Prime Minster Robert Muldoon. These days the park attracts around 600,000 visitors a year but on the day of my visit I could count the visitors on both hands.

Once down on the flat you reach the area where CSC vehicles can park up on a hard surface. It’s good to see that the parking bays are around 11 – 12 metres long so could easily take our motorhome at 9 metres or two smaller vehicles with a bit of an overhang over the grass to allow for the 3 metre rule.

Parking in the CSC area is $20 per night regardless of the number of people in the motorhome, or at least that’s the figure that comes up using the council online booking service. A quick check on pricing during summer shows that the price is the same year round which I find surprising as I thought it would be cheaper during winter. I am a strong advocate for making these places much more affordable over winter maybe as little as $5 per night to encourage use of the facilities and also reward the people that are travelling during that off peak period.

Across the roadway from the CSC area is a large park area that opens up onto the sweeping beach that was completely devoid of people on this beautiful winters day. There is potable water available here from taps although these are too far from the road or the camp to connect your hose. There is also a a rather dilapidated toilet block just across from the CSC camp, it’s still more than serviceable and clean it’s just really showing it’s age. But one mustn’t grumble.

At the end of the sealed roadway is the entrance to the camping area of Te Haruhi Bay. Despite the sign telling you that bookings can be made over the phone at the park office this is no longer the case. However since almost everyone carries a mobile these days it should not be a problem for most.

It’s good to see the Kiwi sign on the gate reminding you that this is a land island with a predator proof fence. So if you have driven in here with your dog or cat you need to immediately turn around and exit the park as no animals are allowed. I realise that a lot of motorhomers travel with their pets ruling out places like these but conservation must be a priority in places like this close to the city where so few other places exist.

Despite Auckland Regional Parks being rubbish free I noticed these bins at the campsite along with another worm farm. The ultimate in recycling I guess.

The official camping area is a large flat area that given the huge amount of rain we have had recently was remarkably firm and dry. In fact the council have had to close a number of their camps over the winter due to sodden ground. Refer previous blog. So it’s good to see one that can be used year round.

One thing I did find surprising is that given that the camp can take 160 paying campers that there appeared to be only one water tap. This tap was located at the back of the camp ground and I imagine access would be quite difficult when the camp is full.

The camp is $15 per adult per night with a minimum charge of $30. I don’t really see why this place should be any more expensive than the CSC area given it offers no extra facilities. You can however stay here for 7 nights as opposed to 3 nights in the CSC area. Bookings can be made up to 7 months in advance via the council website.

Behind the campsite is a walk up the hill that takes you to Pink Beach, a really pleasant walk through farm land. The walk starts off on a nice gravel track that runs out at the top of the hill. Sadly the ground beyond here became very boggy making access beyond this point a walk for dryer ground conditions and another day.

Back down the hill and past the ancient Maori burial ground that adjoins the campsite and then for a stroll along the beach. It’s not hard to imagine once the weather warms up just what a pleasant place this would be to stay.

The beach is obviously a very safe swimming beach with a huge grassed area behind to allow for plenty of picnic places or just some shade under one of the many pohutakawa trees.

At the other end of the beach from the campground is the Ranger station which is also the home to the Shakespear Open Sanctuary a group of volunteers working to reintroduce and foster native species within the park.

The building was unmanned on the day of my arrival but the Peacocks were doing their best to man the station in the absence of a ranger.

Leaving the park I stopped at the picnic area located just inside the main gate, although you cannot camp here it would be a very pleasant place to park up and have a picnic under the trees. Maybe even try your luck at collecting your bag of cockles for dinner. There are great views from here to Rangitoto and the Sky Tower in the background.

Leaving Shakespear Regional Park I thought I would call into the freedom camping area located at the Gulf Harbour Marina. It’s a much larger area than a lot of freedom camping areas. Unlike a lot of these places where anything bigger than a car will struggle to park here you could easily park an 11 or 12 metre motorhome with plenty of room on the otherside for one of a similar length.

Reading the online comments the 20 spaces here fill up really fast so an early arrival would be best. Because these are car/trailer spaces they are a standard carpark width meaning that you are very close to your next door neighbour.

Located just inside the carpark are toilets and a very handy dump station but sadly no fresh water. There is fresh water at Shakespear Regional Park but no tap close enough to connect a hose from the carpark.

The notice about the defence area relates to an area of land and sea at the end of the peninsular that is used by the Navy with the land a restricted area and obviously when they are doing live firing then so is the sea.

Heading back to Auckland it was a quick visit to RnRV in Silverdale for a catch up with the owner Paul to discuss a couple of things about a new blog series I am working on to be published soon. Paul’s yard runs alongside the Northern Motorway so as you drive past you can see this huge display it’s worth getting off at Silverdale to have a look at whats on offer if you are considering a motorhome or caravan purchase.
