OH OH ALSO!
In Japanese there's a term, ryototsukai I think and it means BOTH dual sword wielder AND bisexual! So swords are queer!!

So I was thinking about how Rin’s gonna need a new weapon now, and thought it would be pretty cool to have him dual-wield two different blades. The left sword represents his demon heart, and is able to sort of “carry” his flames via the use of Cool Runes™, while the right sword represents his human heart, and is pretty much just a standard holy blade.

A thought: you know how the Japanese term for dual wielder, “ryoutoutsukai”, is also supposed to be a slang term for bisexual?
Okay, I know he was under the possession of an enemy Stand in canon, but...hear me out...

Not to be one of Those People, but the Japanese word for a dual sword wielder ‘ryoutoutsukai’ is also a term for bisexuality. And who is known for his skill with two swords?

just thinking about how much zuko, toph, and sokka’s storylines would be enhanced by them being queer
zuko because he knows he’s never going to live up to his father’s expectations. his mother was the only one who accepted all of him (until iroh), nurtured the gentle side of him, and he lost her early on. his father is disappointed in every aspect of him, and zuko’s arc in part is about learning that his father was wrong for that, that he shouldn’t have been shamed and bullied and abused for just being the person he was. he realizes his father’s expectations are impossible, that the culture he was raised in wasn’t the moral stronghold he thought it was, and he starts learning who he really is and who he wants to be. zuko’s arc is about being the best version of himself, and part of that is accepting that he’s worthy of love even if he isn’t what people expect of him
toph was never the person her parents thought she was. they had a very strict definition of who she had to be, and that definition was very feminine, at least what they thought that meant. quiet, malleable, fragile. but toph isn’t that person. and she never has been. she realized at a young age that who she was inside and who her parents expected her to be were vastly different. toph is LOUD. she takes up space. she’s rough and tumble. she is, for a 12 year old girl, masculine. she’s DELIGHTED when the person representing her in the play is a huge, muscular dude. toph never had any trouble being exactly who she was, it was everyone else that needed to adjust. she’s blind, but when other girls make fun of her appearance, she’s hurt. when katara says she’s beautiful, it genuinely moves her. when boys make remarks about her, they mostly get punched
sokka because his arc is about letting go of his toxic masculinity and the expectations he has placed on his own shoulders. he thinks, even as a teenager, its his job to be the man of his village. he has an image of what the ideal man is, and that’s not who he feels himself to be. the more he gets comfortable, the further away from his village and the strict gender roles he’s enforced there, he gets silly, excitable, and open. he doesn’t have to keep himself jaded to be a man. he doesn’t have to put the world on his own shoulders. it’s okay if he’s soft, sometimes. he really has to let go of the idea that he has to be a specific person to make his father proud of him
cartoons have made so many strides in the last few years, and korra did so much to lead the way. i love avatar with my whole heart, i’m just wondering ways it could’ve been different if it were made today
