genre: a lot of angst, this is kind of a sad and sensitive story

warnings: mention of bullying, major character death, mention of car accident

word count: 1.4k

plot: best friends to enemies, yunho (ateez)

yunho and y/n were close, attached at the hip. it was always ‘yunho and y/n’. you couldn’t bring up one without the other. but ‘yunho and y/n’ were no more, it was just yunho.

note: !! a major thing to note is that the main character has already passed from the very beginning, yunho is recounting the night!! the scene in y/n's room with the soccer players is nothing sexual. while it may seem like it, that's NOT the case. the players would go in there and prank her and taunt her with knowing her family secrets. while the main character experienced a difficult life, her cause of death is irrelevant to her emotional and mental state.

note 2: this drabble is based off a tiktok i saw. the audio, and the inspiration, behind this is the lyrics. ‘i was there for you in your darkest times / i was there for you in your darkest nights / but i wonder where were you / when i was at my worst down on my knees’ – maps by maroon5 . i'm not really a fan of the ending but oh well.

You and Yunho were those friends. The ones that people saw together at a young age and either said they’re definitely going to date when they’re older or they’re so cute, too bad they won’t be friends for long. It didn’t bother you or Yunho. They just seemed like haters who were praying for your downfall.

You and Yunho were friends for a long time; 15 years to be exact. You both could remember the day you met. It was one of two days that had changed both of your lives forever. Yunho could remember that he was sitting by the classroom during recess. He had broken his arm and wasn’t allowed to play while it healed. You had noticed that he was bored and looked a little down – probably because he wasn’t allowed to play – so you made your way towards him with a kickball for you to pass back and forth. He remembers the smile on your face when he agreed to play with you. He knew you would be his best friend forever.

There was something about the way you spoke and held yourself that always peaked Yunho’s interest. You were unpredictable, spontaneous, and so unapologetically you. You stood up for yourself and what you believed in; you stood up for Yunho. You were stubborn when you believed in something and didn’t budge when someone tried to change your mind. Yunho had always admired that about you.

While you were Yunho’s best friend, you weren’t the only friend Yunho had. He was quite popular among the kids at school, most notably were the soccer team. While you really didn’t care that Yunho had other friends, you did have a problem with him being friends with the soccer team. But you said they never did anything to you, y/n. Yunho later found out that you had lied to him about them. Two of the players on the team were your neighbors and had frequently found themselves in your room taunting you and threatening to spill your darkest secrets to the school – to Yunho. Yunho was your best friend, but he just couldn’t know the things that went on behind closed doors.

Yunho never knew what you had against the soccer team, just that you hated them. But Yunho had asked you to join him and the guys that night. You had refused and Yunho knew you were hiding something. There was no way you hated someone that much without reason. “You’re hiding something, y/n! Just tell me what it is.” He knows he could’ve gone about it better, but he was just so frustrated that you were hiding something from him and that you refused to hang out with him and his friends. “I don’t have to tell you anything, Yunho. And I’m certainly not obligated to like everyone that you do just because we’re best friends.” He hated that you were the most level headed person during an argument. He wanted you to get angry and lose your temper like he had. He wanted you to lose control and just spit out what you were hiding. But it never worked like that, not with you.

You were frustrated and so angry that he couldn’t respect your wishes. But your pride and instinct to protect your secret had blinded you, and you weren’t going to back down when you had gotten this far. You would die on this hill if that’s what it took. “Why can’t you just respect me and my decisions?! I’m sure if it was them that acted this way, you wouldn’t bug them like you do me. You would probably laugh it off and ignore it. So just do that for me.” You were done talking to him. If he couldn’t respect your decisions and questioned something as petty as you not liking his friends, then he was no better than them and didn’t deserve your friendship. You slipped into your shoes as you prepared to leave his house. “Where are you going? We’re not done talking, y/n.” You scoffed. “I was done talking a long time ago, Yunho. If you don’t want to respect my feelings, fine. I won’t be here for you to disrespect them anymore.” It was his turn to scoff, and the look on your face lit a fire in him. “Go ahead and run away from your problems… just like you always do.” With one last look at his face, you turned around and left his house.

Yunho honestly didn’t even think the fight was worth losing your friendship over, but his pride had a hold on him and it wasn’t letting up any time soon. He scoffed in annoyance as he ran his hand through his hair. It’s really not that hard to answer a simple question. But it didn’t matter anymore, because your friendship was over. 15 years of laughs, of memories, of friendship were over in the blink of an eye because he was too caught up in his own feelings to think about how it made you feel. He got a text. Hey. you coming? Yunho ignored the message, letting that be his response. He was too annoyed and bothered to go out now.

Yunho thinks that that was the real kicker. Yunho had been bugging and bugging you to go out with them that night. But after your argument, he, himself, didn’t even end up going out. He was still awake watching your favorite movie series when he got a call from you. His heart skipped a beat when he saw your name and picture flash across his phone screen. Maybe she’s cooled down and wants to talk. And so he paused the movie and prepared himself for whatever you might say to him. But he hadn’t been prepared for what he heard.

“Hello? Is this Yunho?” Yunho was confused at the deep voice coming from your end of the line. “Hello?” Yunho shook his head. “Yeah, I’m Yunho. Who are you?” A sigh of relief came from the other end of the line. “Um, the owner of this phone. I was walking by when it happened. Someone hit her with their car. It looked really bad. She told me to call Yunho.” Yunho’s heart stopped beating and all he could hear was what he had said to her before she left. Go ahead and run away from your problems… just like you always do. Yunho came back to the line where the person was still talking. “Where is she? The hospital.” And with the name of the hospital in mind, Yunho slipped on his shoes and drove as fast as he could to get to her. Go ahead and run away from your problems… just like you always do. Yunho had turned into the emergency room parking and rushed to park and run towards the ER. “Where’s Choi y/n?” The world was spinning faster than usual. Go ahead and run away from your problems… just like you always do. Nobody seemed to notice Yunho’s tall presence in the middle of the chaos. “I need to see Choi y/n.” Finally a nurse came up to him. “Are you hurt son? What’s your name? You can’t be here if you’re not hurt.” Yunho couldn’t think and the nurse was speaking too fast for him to comprehend. Go ahead and run away from your problems… just like you always do. “Choi y/n. I need to see Choi y/n.”

The nurse nodded and pulled Yunho with him to the desk. “Are you family or a spouse?” Yunho nodded as the nurse looked for you in the system. “Yeah, she’s my best friend, my sister… She’s my other half.” The nurse had stopped smiling when the computer loaded. Yunho knew what that face meant. The nurse looked at his watch to confirm that it was, in fact, past 1:27am. “I’m so sorry. She passed away during emergency surgery.” Yunho had never felt so empty. He could see the tears well up in your eyes when he had spoken his final words towards you. He could see the hesitance in your step as you turned to walk out of his room. And he could see your hoodie left on his desk, forgotten amidst your hasty exit after your argument. You were dead, gone from this world forever – gone from Yunho’s world, and his last words were a diss to something you had prided yourself in not doing.
