Play With Me ð€ðŒ
I kind of got into Stranger Things backwards (and, as always, way too late). First I heard Chrissy wake up! by The Gregory Brothers, then I watched the video for the song and became obsessed with Eddie. And because I'm music driven, I listened to the soundtrack of Stranger Things before I finally started watching it. The Season 4 soundtrack is my favorite, and I developed a taste for the metal songs and bands. I looked up the releases of Masters of Puppets, Last in Line, and a few others to see if it was realistic that Eddie knew them.
Now to the point I'm trying to make here:
When I watched the first episode of Season 4, I was really excited (obviously because of a certain metalhead). And when the scene with Dustin and Mike looking for a sub for Lucas (and asking everyone they ever talked to) was accompanied by the song Play With Me by Extreme, I was even more excited. The song was a really good fit for the scene and I love the whole dynamic of how it was edited.
But after a while I wondered if Play With Me was released in 1986. Unfortunately it wasn't. Extreme released it in February 1989 on their debut album Extreme. And this is what bothers me. I know the song is perfect for the scene, but they always tried to make everything fit the time/year the season was in, and then they chose a song that wasn't released yet.
Maybe it's just me and my music geek mind, but I think it's a shame. Since I noticed it, it just feels a little out of place to me.
Another thing I just noticed is why Eddie might have had the huge Dio patch on his vest and not Metallica. I assumed Master of Puppets was his (all time) favorite song since he played it in the last episode. So why didn't he have a patch of it on his vest? Dio's Last in line came out in 1984, Metallica's Master of Puppets in 1985. So Dio was just the first and probably his favorite album/song until Master of Puppets.
And another thing I realized while writing this. He is a damn good guitarist! I don't think Metallica released any sheet music with their albums, so he taught himself all of Master of Puppets (and probably a dozen others) by ear. He was able to pick up the whole riff and everything just by listening to the tape over and over again. That's impressive! At least to me.Â
