Hello everyone! My name is Annah and I'm the girl always looking for her class. In fact, I was two years in literary preparatory classes before arriving, so this is only my first year at the university ;) I love literature and listen to Lana Del Rey or rock bands (such as Boston Manor or Fontaines D.C.) so I've chosen to combine these passions in this first post, around a thought I had at the end of the 1st chapter of the Negus (page 33). The author offers some thoughts on the link between audiences and meanings. According to Stuart Hall, audiences have the choice between accepting ‘the dominant meaning’ or ‘developing an independent interpretation’. It immediately reminded me of the song ‘White Mustang’ by Lana Del Rey, where the meaning of the main refrain is a matter of debate among her fans: is she saying " (I saw) your white mustang/Said you’re a white mustang" as written in the released lyrics or rather :

->  "You’re why I must stay/Said you’re a wild mistake"

-> "Why I am staying ?/You’re why it must end"

as believe an increasing number of fans? Is it too far-fetched or do you believe it can be what Lana Del Rey was expecting of an "active minority" audience? And above all, why does the audience sometimes look for a deeper meaning ?

I personnally believe that it can be in order to identify with the singer, to convey a more 'personnal' aspect to popular music. I think it's really great that some singers offer different levels of interpretation. Anyways, it definitely shows that popular music plays more than just a cultural role!
