thinking about how violet was almost a scribe. thinking about how a lot of her knowledge is history, geography... and botany. thinking about her working with maps and technical diagrams/drawings. thinking about her making maps and technical drawings...

violet is someone who really does not see herself as desirable and/or sexy.

even after her first kiss with xa.den i don't think she really acknowledges that he. desires. her. for a long time.

she holds herself back in general because there's a mostly unconscious feeling that her feelings (whether romantic or sexual) won't be returned. everyone has seen her as either someone to be protected, someone who's unworthy of respect on the mat, or someone whose only use is her intelligence. so that's what she expects everyone to think to some degree.

even when xa.den starts complimenting her i don't think she really acknowledges it, even in her head.

 You  are  perhaps  the  first...  Violet's  heart  clenched.  She  knew  what  it  was  like  to  keep  secrets,  but  to  tell  no  one?  To  have  no  one  to  be  honest  with?  That  must  be  agony.  Not  even  her  sisters?  Of  anyone  surely  she  could  confide  in  them...  No  one  deserved  that  kind  of  isolation.

 "Elain-"  Sympathetic  pain  is  laced  through  the  word.  Then,  slowly,  it  was  replaced  with  rage  as  the  implication  truly  dawned  on  her.  Elain  was  fae.  She  was  immortal.  "-wait...  So  your  only  options  are  to  spend  eternity  in  a  miserable  relationship  or  to  be  alone?"

 Her  fingertips  buzzed,  power  crackling  under  the  skin.  The  reaction  begins  before  she  can  even  try  to  contain  the  anger.  And  Gods,  she  was  angry.  The  whiplash  of  emotions  only  makes  it  more  intense.

 "And  they  want  you  to  choose  between  the  two?"  Including those sisters Elain can't speak to. They get to live with their men while Elain is kept from hers and locked in an impossible decision. Violet  knows  she  can't  interfere.  She  has  no  right  to  pass  judgement  on  their  customs  but- 

 At  least  this  time  she  didn't  have  to  keep  her  voice  down.  And  in  all  honesty,  for  these  particular  words  she  didn't  care  who  heard  what  she  thought  of  the  options  imposed  on  Elain.  "How  fucking  dare  they-"

the chances that they might have been overheard were slight, and yet elain knew better than to think it absent entirely. knew enough to know that she could not allow whispers to begin, not even by sheer accident. violet would mean no harm by some offhand comment, and yet could do harm by speaking of what she had surmised.

and she had surmised correctly, at least when it came to elain's own feelings. nothing had happened, not really, not since....and yet that did not mean that nothing was there.

"it's quite alright," she says, with a wavering smile. "you did not know. you could not have known." no one had told her, either, what it all would mean. there had not been the time, at first, and then...

it is risky when hearts get involved, violet says, and elain wonders if that is not risky always and everywhere. and yet it is strange, the difference in meaning.

elain's gaze seeks her friend's, and in violet's eyes she sees perhaps the one person currently in all of prythian who might understand the tangle of it all, the horror of what it would mean for your head to break the surface of the water and find yourself tied in a knot you could not understand and did not want.

"no," she says, and shivers a little - - - at the truth of it, at how it feels to speak it plainly. no need to guard her words to spare the feelings of her mate or her sister or the high lord of this court. "no, i do not want him. though i think it is the wish of nearly everyone that i would just accept it. accept him." feyre, she thinks, would not force her to anything, but the tangles of this knot never end: there is no simple way out that will not put this court in some kind of peril. "but i do not think...i do not think i can." she breathes deeply, steadying - - in and then out. "you are perhaps the first i have told in such plain terms."

anyway i'm placing my bets on halden being violet's ex, and that their thing was just a bit of fun to him. she was conveniently around as the daughter of one of his fathers generals, and she was also naive enough to swoon over a prince's advances. but then when it became clear it wasn't serious (maybe with some bitching on his end about her being too broken and low ranking for him to seriously think about) girl got her heart broken. (definitely fuels how angry she got when cat called her a convenient placeholder to fuck- she could see history repeating itself in an even more painful way.)

and then her other ex was a rebound fling, and she made absolutely clear it was entirely physical this time.

i'm like 90% sure that shirts and trousers would be more likely to be standard issue, partly because they're unisex... so violet literally just prefers nightgowns? and honestly?? good for her

ok but violet says she's been with two people at the beginning of fw right?? when she's just turned 20?? i really genuinely don't think they were in any way romantic. maybe a lil crush.

i think the first one was... not necessarily violet stringing someone along, but i do think she probably wanted to get her first time done. she's rebelling against her protective and cold mother (probably dying for some kind of warmth), she's missing the intimacy of having her siblings around, and she's watching people around her get into relationships that may or may not mean anything.

the second time was an attempt at something more romantic but do we really think she'll be that much more emotionally mature & available?? kind of more of a fling after learning some of what she enjoyed with the help of her first partner. she says she misses sex, not that she misses relationships or men in general :))

also?? yeah i've said be rough with her, and she will enjoy that, but it will be new to her. at the beginning of fw she still hasn't learned everything she enjoys.

violet would not call herself an artist!! she can't sketch from imagination, only from a reference. she focuses a lot on getting the details right. and her main focuses are botany and culture.

but she does get some enjoyment from it. it's a way for her to relax, quiet the rest of her brain and just focus on translating details from reality onto a page. when she does sketch, it usually ends up with a page full of notes about various parts of a plant and its properties, or what a certain statue is meant to represent and the history behind the style.
