I think about his moment too often...
TASUKU, my son, YOU'RE ALLOWED TO BE HAPPY DAMMIT. IT IS NOT A SIN TO BE HAPPY. AND MAKING OTHERS HAPPY IS NOT YOUR ENTIRE PURPOSE IN LIFE!.
LEGIT HE IS SO SELF-SACRAFICING TO A FAULT. I CANNOT HANDLE THIS BROS.

SAME GAO. SAMEEEE. YOU TELL YOUR BIG BRO!!!
Okay...now I really gotta figure how to incorporate Purgatory Knight Tasuku into YGO DM because stuff like this? OH GOD THE ANGST AND CHR DEVELOPMENT AND STAKES. MOKUBA WOULD BE SO HEARTBROKEN Y'ALL. IT BE ALMOST LIKE DEATH-T 2 WHERE A ONE OF HIS BIG BROS GOES OFF THE DEEP END, EXCEPT THIS TIME HE'D GET TO HELP SAVE THAT BIG BRO FIGURE.

These bits from Eps 20 & 16 of 100 are 100% confirmation the main way Gao deals with trauma/loss is through the defense mechanism of SUPRESSION. He puts on a smile, acting like he is totally fine when in reality all that’s doing is making it worse by not really processing what has happened to him.
It wouldn’t shock me if he did this when his brother Yota died, and perhaps he couldn’t even look at the Mighty Sun Fighter Comics his brother made until he was able to handle it. And then, once he was able to go through the stages of grief, is when he desired to take up the Mighty Sun Fighter mantle as a way to honor his brother and let him know how he keeps inspiring him even after he’s gone.
Really wish we got to see more of Gao’s childhood before and after Yota’s death, but I know BF didn’t like to go into detail on the super heavy stuff (like Tausku’s backstory of before the Disaster and what happened really during it other than the exposition dump) probably cause it was a kids anime.
Anyway, please give my son a hug because my god he was led to believe someone who was like a grandpa to him died and he was so scared he too was gonna die ;;;;
