“oh, i was just making sure branch wasn’t actually here,” she answered easily with a shrug, satisfied with the visual sweep that her roommate wasn’t actually hiding away trying to watch over her. it may make him seem crazy but…. it wasn’t something poppy would have actually put past him. “i don’t really intent to stab any ghosts, but it’s better to be prepared, right?” taking a step forward towards the weapon in it’s case, she very slowly reached out to pick it up, holding it with both hands as carefully as she could. “is there a safety on this? so i won’t accidently shoot it off or anything?”

“makes sense.” danny nods, even though in truth it makes little to no sense to him. he’d never actually met branch, or not that he recalls at least, so the idea that poppy seems to think the guy followed her here is a little off-putting to him. like maybe the guy’s got some issues that danny wants to personally avoid, but given how strange his own group of friends can be he’s certain he’s in no real position to be judging anyone. “oh, nah.” danny shrugs, throwing out the answer nonchalantly as if the lack of safety measures on a weapon is something that matters very little in the grand scheme of things. “fenton works gadgets never have safetys, it’s part of the fun.” he shrugs, offering an easy smile. “besides, if there’s anything other than me coming at you, you might want to just shoot it.” and, because he feels they’ve covered the most important topics, he claps his hands together and smiles brightly at her before leading her in the direction of the path they’d be taking in the woods. “let’s go find a ghost!”

months of careful planning and lengthy meetings with his producers leads him to this moment. the process is the same; sitting through hours of discussion about production and sets, the nervous energy that spikes through him as they ride to location. and while all of that may be familiar to him, this moment feels different, fresher. like he’s on the verge of something great. something exceptional is burgeoning — he knows it, he just can’t quite put his finger on it just yet. “how you feeling?” he asks, looking down at poppy with a smile. season three was all about special guests, danny reaching out to friends to take them through a day of the life while bringing his viewers closer to what life on the island was like. and, initially, he hadn’t expected poppy to want to be a part of it, but here they were. “whenever you’re ready we’ll get you hooked up with the fenton bazooka,” and on instinct he rolls his eyes because he still can’t believe his parents named this particular gadget that. “and then we can get started.”

“you guess? danny - this is awesome! you have your own tv show!!” it’s not something she really needs to point out, but does anyway, not understanding how he doesn’t see just how cool this job actually is. following behind him, poppy takes even steps and tries her best to keep all of the excitement under control. she wasn’t really one to be into weapons - always finding branch’s obsession with them to be unnecessary - but she supposed it made sense to have them on a ghost hunting show like this and something about getting to hold a bazooka sounded like it was going to be fun. “ooohhh,” she hums as she looks at the gadget. “and i get to use that? i already have my pepper spray and little knife, but i won’t say no to an energy beam either!” to prove her point  her hands slide into her hoodie’s pocket and pull out a pink miniature pepper spray can and a purple pocket knife. she gives them each a little wave before stuffing them back into their place. “it was the only way i could get branch to agree to let me come on the show without him trying to tag along.” actually, as soon as the words left her mouth, poppy looked around real quickly, as if she were double checking that her best friend wasn’t somewhere hiding away to watch over them both through this whole night.

try as he might, danny can’t stop the way he smiles as poppy excitedly shows off her pepper spray and knife. he has no idea what the hell that was supposed to do against ghosts, but he supports her and branch’s effort. “you can totally stab the ghost if you want, i won’t stop you.” he nods, laughing a little before he pats the top of the weapon he gave her. “this just might be more effective.” when she begins looking around, danny can’t help but follow her gaze for a moment. looking around for a few moments as well before he realizes he has no clue what they’re looking for to be exact. “you....you okay?” he asks after a moment.

looking around at all the crew members packing up now that their part of the setup was done, poppy was physically holding in her excitement to keep herself from bursting. it was taking nearly all of her willpower to not start glowing right this second - but she wasn’t sure if danny would actually be okay with that for the show. she was pretty sure he knew about her powers, she didn’t hide it very well after all, but this was going to be posted for the whole world to see on netflix - maybe he didn’t want to give away any of the actual secrets of corona, hunting only the stories to see what could be real rather than going after what was already confirmed right in front of him. “i’m feeling great! this is so exciting!! i can’t believe you get to do this like all the time,” she answered, turning her attention back to him. her eyes widened a little bit as he mentioned the fenton bazooka. for all she’s seen a lot of weapons in her life (it comes with the territory when one is best friends with branch grey), poppy had never seen a bazooka before. the thought of that was what pushed her over the edge, her control slipping as a very faint glow begins to radiate off of her - not quite yet enough to be blinding or light up the entire area around them but certainly bright enough to be somewhat noticeable. “i’m ready!! let’s do this!”

the differences between the two couldn’t be more clear. danny’s energy nowhere near the enthusiasm she was bringing, and honestly if he wasn’t so used to fred he’d be a little put off by it. but when one of your best friends is hands down the most excited person on the planet it’s impossible to be taken aback by a little glee. “yeah, it can be pretty cool i guess.” he remembers when he first started the series, getting swept up in the nerves of being on camera taking away from how massive of a moment it was for him. but even now, it’s nice to be on set, still exciting in new ways as he watches the show get bigger and bigger each season. danny can’t help the small smile that touches his face as poppy starts to glow. it’s slight, and danny doubts the rest of the crew is even paying her any mind. “alright,” he chuckles, leading poppy over to the van where they keep the gadgets. the arsenal of tech is a combination of his parents work and the things dexter has invented since he began working with danny. he unlocks the metal hatches on a black case, revealing the sleek gadget with a small smile. “so, pretty easy to operate. this button turns it on. you just aim and shoot, it shoots an energy beam. it can’t hurt you, the beam targets ectoplasmic energy only, so you’ll be fine. and it’s got a fifteen minute recharge so if you do need to use it, use it wisely.”
