Ashur and refusing to become a Warden

When Ashur is blighted, the reason he refused to join the Wardens to save his life it is because of the lack of choice. When one becomes a Warden, what they have to do is decided for them. They fight the darkspawn and kill archdemons. There is no real path for them to do anything else, as the order was when Ashur was blighted.

He is tired of people deciding what he has to do with his life.

He was not given a choice in being named the Imperial Divine, and as Divine he has very little control. The Imperial Chantry is ran by the clergy, not the Divine, who is a glorified figure head. He is told what he has to do, how he has to act, and what is expected of him.

This is part of why he joined the Shadow Dragons, with them there was an obvious choice in what he could do. There were far less expectations for him, and he is not as isolated in his role. He can make friends, and choose who his friends are. There is no one there to tell him he cannot do something because it is unseemly for someone of his status.

He knows that he was born into privilege, and that many in Minrathous would do anything to have what was his birthright. Ashur, however, sees it for the prison that it is. He has no more freedom than the lowest of the low, which is why he fights so hard to save those who are enslaved. He can give them the freedom of choice that he will never have, and he cannot do that if he is a Warden.
