some headcanons !

birdo likes singing, and she isn't too bad at it. it's not something she does often though.

her favorite sports are tennis and kart riding.

her species is omnivorous, and she doesn't have a preference for any kind of food - if it's tasty, she'll love it.

birdo eats by basically swallowing pieces of food whole. despite this, she somehow has a strong sense of taste.

she knows the basics of self-defense and is capable of fighting. she's not the most powerful, but her punches, kicks, and claw swipes can hurt.

what's most deadly about birdo (ignoring any power-ups she could get) is her egg-spitting ability. she can spit eggs with a force that rivals a cannon shooting cannonballs.

it's unknown how exactly she forms eggs to spit, or what the eggs are even made of. if asked birdo will claim it's a secret of her species' and say nothing else.

So in the games Birdo originally used to be an antagonist - in the sense that she was a member of the 8 Bits: a group that served Mamu / Wart (the main villain of Doki Doki Panic / Super Mario Bros 2). I thought it'd be interesting to incorporate that into her story...but definitely in a more flexible way that doesn't involve Dream Machine antics.

Maybe I could go with the narrative that Wart's a crime lord & wannabe king, who came across Birdo soon after she left home. He sweet-talked her into working for him so she could get coins to live off of, but kept a lot of things secret, so she obeyed him out of ignorance. She later cut ties and escaped when she realized how wicked Wart truly was, after he tried to make her do more blatantly criminal stuff like using her eggs to poison people on his hit list.

This happened back when she was younger and more naive. Although she has surely learned from it, Birdo isn't proud of her time in the 8 Bits at all.

The eggs Birdo spits are not edible at all, shell or the liquid contained inside. They are actually highly toxic and, chances are, will make someone extremely ill - or worse - should they attempt to eat them (cooked or raw). Same goes if the liquid enters the body through an opening like the mouth or an open wound.

They're more like "poison bombs" than actual eggs. With their toxicity, and how brutal the cannonball-like force of them being spat out is, their entire purpose is to serve as a self-defense method for a birdo.

thinking of ways to flesh out the birdo species more, since there's almost zero info about them in the games - especially compared to the yoshis which is kinda crazy since birdo debuted before yoshi did but w/e.

since it's apparently the relative norm in the mario world, maybe they live unified under one leader? maybe a kind of chief, not a monarch. tempted to take a page from yoshi's island and say the birdo are native to an island too; maybe nearby the yoshis. more thought needed...

oh by the way, my birdo can talk. speak...english? common? whatever the universal language of the mario world is. she has her "birdoish" (?) language too, which is comprised of honking sounds.

important details: her voice has a very noticeable low pitch, is soft in tone, and overall carries a warm feeling.
