Pure Shock Value

Nobody wanted you to die, except maybe the author, once they realized how much the audience loved you. Something about you sparked joy, be it your smile, your sense of humor, or your dashing good looks. Everyone thought you were safe, simply because no one could bring themselves to imagine the story without you in it. Which is, of course, exactly why the author killed you. Chances are you died mid-sentence, with a smile on your face, oblivious to your fate. Impaled, crushed, decapitated, whatever gave your friends (and the audience) as little time to intervene as possible. They might not even get time to grieve- the story will move on, rushing away, no time to even say goodbye. 

People will talk about your death scene in hushed voices, wary of spoiling others, teary eyed and tongue tied.

Somebody Had To Go

Sorry, kid. Really, honestly, I'm sorry. Someone had to die, for one reason or another, and you drew the short straw this time around. This wasn't a matter of surprise. No, your death wasn't meant to be a shock, wasn't meant to rattle the audience to their core. Your life was a debt, an obligation. Somebody had to go, because the story needed weight, needed sacrifice, needed the conflict to have consequences. Maybe you had the perfect balance of "emotional impact" and "lack of loose ends", or maybe the author just didn't know what else to do with you. Regardless... you deserved better. Another writer could have given you more time and a better death, if even a death at all. 

At least your fans will never forget- at least they will forge their own stories, tales in which you live to see another day.

The Catalyst

Somehow, someway, you left something behind, and from this a story is born. A mystery, a goal, an inheritance, or even just an empty space where you belonged. The pain is fresh, weighing heavily on our protagonists. Our audience never meets you, at least not directly (ghosts are on thin ice, here), but they come to know you well, through that which you left behind. You live on in memories, in evidence, in the way someone's voice cracks when they say your name. Though you died before the very first word, this story would not exist without you. 

Everything you did left an echo that will be heard for years to come.

Emi winced at the comment, looking away from her father with her arms crossed. The one time her temper got the best of her and she ended up not only shocking the teen that was harassing her, but also unintentionally causing a whole power outage at the nearby arcade. Possibly malfunctioning a few of their machines in the process. Part of her was relieved that she was ‘in disguise’ during the whole thing, shame it didn’t help her avoid all of this.

“U-Um...” She paused, not knowing what else to say other than sorry even if that wasn’t going to fix things. The younger Nikaido played with her hair, a nervous tic she’s been meaning to try and shake off since it makes her hair fizz up sometimes, and mumbled “Sorry...”

It's the "i love you" we use every time we finish up a call with our mom, every time we want to offer our friends a bit of encouragement, the welcome home kiss on the cheek we give our lover every day. It's sending them pictures you know they'll laugh at, buying them strange little nothings that you know they'll like. it's having their bagel order memorized and setting their birthday as your password. Somehow, their name weaves its way into almost every funny story you share with others. It's brief, casual, it's a habit. We aren't even aware we do it. It says that love is cradled lightly in your heart, generously given, spilling out into the world unbeknownst to you, making up the web of delicate threads that hold us all together.

i hate you (i love you)

This is said with a sort of disbelief, that you can't believe you love this person, that you could never have imagined they would make you feel such affection and fondness for them. They're a little shit, the most ridiculous person you've ever met, and you would absolutely die for them. You say "i hate you," and they just shoot you that stupid grin of theirs. Maybe they throw it back at you. Neither of you has to say "i love you," to know that you do, it goes without saying.

I love you and I wish you knew just how much

The pining, the aching, the wishing, and hoping; it's what you whisper to yourself under the cover of darkness as you fall asleep thinking of them. It's the text you've typed out and deleted before sending at least a dozen times. It's the countless pictures of them you have of them on your phone, the home screen image of their smile that you know will give you away the next time they jokingly swipe your phone. It sits restless and suffocating at the back of your throat. rip dude, i know how that is.

the brains

People are not so much your forte. You are more at home with thoughts, ideas, hobbies, skills. As such, you probably have to learn how to work well with others--but once you do, hey, it has its moments. While you are treasured for your ability to solve problems, people also have this unique love of novelty. When you break from your schedule, when you say something no one is expecting--that's novel. You are as curious and lovable as the subjects you study. You are family. This place is not the same without your witty comments and wry observations. You definitely feel more comfortable when someone needs a straightforward answer than a shoulder to cry on, but it's not impossible to give both. Know that your family loves you for more than that, though, and will (usually) remember to respect your boundaries.

the "comic relief"

Yes, alright, you tell your jokes and do your bits. You break awkward silences and sing silly songs. But what about when you're not keeping the levity? What else makes up the person who makes others feel good? You're kind. You connect with people. You hate to see others sad. You have a vice or two--who doesn't--but the point is, you are the epitome of what it is to be human, and you are able to encompass the absolutely zany improbability of life as we know it. People are comforted by you. They cherish your spirit and relate to you. But it can be difficult when you're not laughing. Comedy becomes a wall to keep worse feelings out, or in. A person who feels any emotion to the extreme will undoubtedly feel others the same way. Laughing is great, but... perhaps a big reason you appreciate your family is because there's something you can't stand in a silence.

the protective one

It does not require much for you to take someone under your wing. You have a knack for seeing the best in others and rooting for them, and they look up to you in turn. They feel that you are safe to go to in times of chaos or strife, and are calmed by your presence. You take extra measures to make sure everyone feels supported. Things that others might not even consider, you have already likely accounted for. In most scenarios, you are "the leader." Your struggles tend to come from your desire to provide things to others. You want to give, to see those you love happy, to make wherever you are a place of comfort. Your failures hit you hard because you see this as your responsibility, and you hate to let people down. ...Okay, yes, there's no avoiding it: this is the parent friend.

Emi Facts (tm)

//jfc I’m compiling some Emi Facts that I’ve talked to friends about in the past + new ones to make up for not writing her much here:

Her eyes aren’t naturally blue, they’re brown. She wears colored contacts for aesthetic reasons (and so she doesn’t have to wear glasses to see). For comfort reasons, she doesn’t wear either of them much at home.

Emi’s first sentence was ‘I love you’.

She’s definitely the kind of person to listen to irl horror events/story documentaries because they’re genuinely fascinating sometimes and then later regret it once she tries to sleep.

As a child, she always carried around this plush. It was actually what leads her to researching and getting an actual pet bird, down to giving them the same name: Peeko.

Why a cockatiel of all birds? Simple, the crest looks like how her dad puts up his hair.

Disguises herself when she visits arcades in fear of people recognizing her. Can’t risk having people make articles about Mr. Nikaido’s daughter being a G A M E R

She’s not too sure if she should follow in her fathers’ footsteps in being a modeling fighter, hell, she’s unsure of her future in general despite pretty much having access to everything. Then again, too many options can lead to indecisiveness sometimes.
