「 When hiring Shuuji, there is a special way someone can discreetly contact him for whatever reason; they would not even need to call his phone or go to his office.
It’s known as a “Coffee Call.”
If a client wants to remain anonymous, they need only place a delivery order with a coffee shop only a couple buildings down from Shuuji’s office. Different key modifications will indicate different types of information relevant for Shuuji to keep in mind.
» Iced — This tells him the case is of minor import, and can be taken at his usual pace. Also tells him that if other more important cases happen to crop up, it’s okay to tackle those first. » Hot — The sign that a case is of extreme import and needs attention ASAP. It’s to denote that whatever the case entails, it cannot wait. » Mocha Drizzle — Used to show that a case will be handling heavier subjects, such as deaths, kidnappings (with or without ransom), disappearances, and the like. Cases that need a much more focused, delicate touch. » Caramel Drizzle — It shows the case is handling topics that aren’t supposed to get very emotionally taxing, such as trying to find a pet, catching a cheater, tailing a suspect, etc.. Anything that would be “standard fare” for a private investigator and can be handled as they see fit. » Cappuccino — Cases with this are extremely confidential. They must be shared among as few people as possible and must be reported back as discreetly as he can manage. » Houjicha Latte — When a case comes in with this, he is being told that this case does not need to be so tightly under wraps and he is free to report his findings in whatever way works best for both parties. This is normally assumed and will be asked about regardless, but ordering this is just confirmation of that which can be assumed at a glance. » Extra Espresso — Typically this means to tell him that the case is about to take a long time, or need an absurd amount of time to be delegated to it. Normally only for cases that wind up being worked on for longer than a month straight. » Any Powder Flavouring On Top — This tells him that whoever placed the order is not the intended client, either as the contact is helping on their behalf, or is trying to go behind their back for some reason.
To actually get the staff to deliver the coffee to Shuuji so he knows it’s for a case, the order needs to also state that the drink is “for a friend of the coffee house,” or some variant thereof. That is their codeword for knowing it is to be sent to Shuuji with special instructions, without ever directly tying the caller to him in any fashion without their consent. Cryptic instructions for this process exist on the backs of his business cards, where one can ask the baristas about "your friend's special" to learn about this secret ordering method. 」
