amber  eyes  with  their  unearthly  glow  turn,  disdainful,  a  gaze  upon  heisenberg.  “i  was  born  here  in  all  the  ways  that  matter.”  screaming?  check.  crying?  check.  clawing  her  way  out  of  her  old  skin,  a  snake,  a  phoenix,  a  monster  in  every  way  that  truly  counted?  yeah.  cassandra  felt  no  connection  to  the  girl  she  had  been  before  alcina  dimitrescu.  whatever  pathetic  milk-raised  village  cow  had  died,  eaten  alive   by  viruses  and  flies,  in  order  to  create  her,  cassandra  felt  more  connection  to  the  wolves  roaming  the  forest  than  the  girl  she  had  used  to  be.

“weren’t  you  ‘adopted’,  uncle  karl?”  her  words  seek  to  draw  blood,  an  anticipatory  smile  pulling  at  the  edge  of  blood-painted  lips.  “tell  me,  what’s  it  like?”

her  screams  have  tapered  off  into  sobs  as  she  squirms  on  the  cot.  sometimes  she  sees  another  girl,  a  blonde  girl,  like-her  but  not-like-her,  beautiful  and  cold  in  a  way  this  one  will  never  be.  cassandra.  she  had  a  name  before  that,  a  true  name,  but  she  doesn’t  remember  it  since  they  cut  open  her  chest  and  put  something  squirming  inside  of  it.  she   remembers  a  woman  - a  goddess?  with  a  halo  and  wings.  that’s  what  made  her  think  she  must  be  dying.  but  there  is  also  this  woman  -  mother?  - who  stands  over  her,  sometimes  wipes  the  blood  off  of  her  mewling,  heaving  lips  with  a  soft  handkerchief.  sometimes  she  reads  to  her,  even  if  the  girl  is  too  fever-dazed  to  understand  the  words.  there’ll  be  no  more  crying,  she  says,  and  the  girl  has  to  believe  her,  because  she  is  the   only  constant  in  this  life,  this  hellish  existence  that  has  narrowed  itself  down  to  the  girl  and  the  cadou,  fighting  and  kicking  and  screaming.

power.  it’s  thick  and  heady,  and  cassandra  near-tastes  it  in  indra’s  words,  in  the  way  the  human  girl  looks  at  her.  indra  isn’t  one  of  the  sheep,  either  --  she’s  a  killer,  same  as  cassandra.  their  little  chases  have  become  bloodier  and  bloodier,  cassandra  emerging  from the  shadows  to  slash  at  indra’s  heels,  almost  playfully,  inches  away  from  slicing  an  achilles  tendon;  indra  retaliating  with  shotgun  blasts,  sometimes  actually  hitting  her,  and  the  sharp  sting  of  pain,  the  reminder  of  her  own  mortality  is  almost  as  nice  as  what  comes  after  (indra  doting  on  her,  apologizing  profusely  for  hurting  cassandra,  and  tucking  her  into  bed).

so  it’s  not  just  the  thrill  of  power  that  rushes  through  her  when  indra   speaks,  but  the  satisfaction  of  a  game  well-won.  and  something  else,  something  almost  affectionate?  something  foreign  to  a  monster  like  cassandra  dimitrescu,  except  perhaps  in  the  presence  of  her  family.  dark  mouth  twists  in  a  wry  grin,  as  a  playful  hand  reaches  out  to  capture  the  maid’s  chin.  “good.”

“...oops.”   she  is  an  uncaring  girl-creature,  made  of  brittle  bones  and  spite.  still,  she  licks  at  the  pad  of  her  gloved  thumb  and  rubs  it  against  the  darkened  splatter  on  black  lace.  stubbornly,  it  doesn’t  bend  to  her  will.  cassandra  tries  harder  to  no  avail.  “perhaps  it’s  dried.”  she  looks  up  at  the  abomination  of  a  man,  her  favorite  uncle  if  only  for  the  fact  that  she  likes  to  hunt  his  creations  when  he’s  not  looking.  she’s  been  playing  hide-and-seek-and-stalk-and-kill  with  the  delightful  rotary-headed  thing  for  a  week  now,  and  hasn’t  caught  it  yet.  she  doesn’t  think  it  will  taste  good,  but  that’s  hardly  the  point.

“do  you  think  mother  will  notice?”  usually,  she’d  doubt  mother  would  care:  she  is  a  busy  woman,  after  all,  and  cassandra  is  the  most  likely  of  her  daughters  to  get  a  tad  messy.  but  they’re  on  their  way  to  meet  MOTHER  MIRANDA  herself,  and  for  once,  cassandra  and  her  sisters  are  supposed  to  be  making  a   good  impression.
