She takes a second, crossing her arms before letting out a quiet puff. Focus moving from the woman to the art piece.
"You don't travel here much."
Dorothy admittedly suspects that she likely travels around a lot for inspiration. She wasn't especially well versed in art, but she suspected sitting in one place wasn't likely to be super helpful for finding a muse.
WITH HOW SAFE Sanctuary had become since the reformation of the Minutemen's ranks & boot camps, Dorothy found that most days she and her siblings were here unless their parents went back to the Castle. Rose had always said it was for the best, but Dorothy found herself occasionally wondering what the outside world might look like.

"...So I am surprised is all. I take it you've got business here or...are maybe looking for more inspiration in town?"

She offers a small grin as she pokes her head around the corner. It's her first real visit to the Castle, and given that Rose had been pestering their dad about ACTUALLY enlisting, Dorothy herself had decided to at least give it a shot if nothing else.
"Oh noโ€“โ€“"
SHE PAUSES, seeing Eliana seated seemingly uncomfortably in the infirmary as she approaches, a small frown on her face.

Jamie's kids ( rose, dorothy, adam, wes, and roxie ) all have some ties to the Minutemen, EVEN if they don't fully join.
Rose, Dorothy & Adam do all enlist, with Rose winding up as a Lieutenant relatively quickly, Dorothy enlisting as a nurse, and Adam as a weaponsmith.
Roxie & Wes, while not enlisting directly, do actually contribute by Roxie performing across a couple of the Minutemen's settlements, and Wes being a sort of traveling merchant who uses his scavenging to help whatever Minutemen he comes across

"How did you and dad meet?"
It occurs to her that she has no real idea how her parents met ( she wonders if she's the first one to ask, but she's quick to dismiss that thought considering it didn't really matter ). She eyes Jax expectantly, hoping he'll humor the question.
Tumblr media
"I've been trying to play up scenarios in my head, but none of them feel right...and I figured I'd ask rather than daydream about it."

"I'm sure it'll be fine, he's usually really good about being clear whether or not he wants people speaking to him during these times, and worst case scenario you can just hang around the town until later in the afternoon when he's usually more work focused."
TRUTH BE TOLD Jamie had always been incredibly communicative with his children, Dorothy had always felt like she understood her father well. Better than most people would and as they round the corner she turns to the woman and eyes her father in the distance.
"It seems like he's paused for the time being, typically that just means he's in deep thought, but I have no doubt he already knows you're here. He has made a point of knowing things like that whenever he's on leave."
She smiles, Jamie turning ever so slightly seeing her before Dorothy offers a wave to greet him.
"See? All good."
"Well, that's an honorable goal - I hope you succeed in that." She smiled a bit. This girl seemed to be a good balance of optimistic and realistic. It was nice to see to be honest.
She snorted, "Ah...yeah I find a lot of people are like that to be honest. Even I can be too into my own head. But if he's managed to set up this place, I'm sure he's a good man." Though from the sounds of it he was a bit of a hardass, at least a first. But Yun really couldn't blame anyone for that.
"Alright. You sure it'll be okay to interrupt that?" She knew people often deeply valued their alone time. She sure did. Though...she probably got too much of it to be honest. But this man had to interact with way more people way more often than she did - and she didn't want to start off on the wrong foot by intruding on his privacy in some way.

"It's not a huge deal, frankly there's so many other places in the Commonwealth that aren't safe, my siblings & I count ourselves lucky that we have this place to feel safe IN. I'm going to use this to the best of my ability to put back into the world."
She knows that maybe she's getting ahead of herself but she really can't help it. If nothing else, she'd like to know that when the time came she'd be able to make a difference the way her parents have done. The way she expects her sister someday will too.
"My dad isn't so bad. He's just complicated. I think sometimes he has a lot more in his head than he gives himself credit for. Just give him time, eventually he comes around. He's super pragmatic."
She catches herself trying to soften the blow of her father, and while she knows ultimately he's a good man, both her dads were, it never made them the easiest pills to swallow. Like HOT & COLD. However they always seemed to compliment each other well it was easy to ignore.
"He shouldn't be far now. I figure he's probably in the park now, relaxing and enjoying his evening reading time. He thinks we don't know he does it, but we do."
Oh, two dads huh? That's nice. She wondered if they used a surrogate or something...was that a thing in the wasteland?
"Well thank you for the reassuring words. I appreciate it." She replied with a smile. Yun found that Dorothy was right honestly - places with stability and little to no worry of raiders tended to resemble old society more. Not totally the same but the echos were there.
"Well, that's fair on both accounts. Maybe they'll let you explore some once you get older. But...to be honest with you I wouldn't worry about it - if you were. I mean...it took me a long time to figure out what I was gonna do with myself."
Honestly, probably too long honestly. She was such a hot mess for so long...but it sounded like Dorothy has a much better head on her shoulders than Yun had. And a more extensive support system. And one that was alive.

"Oh no, make no mistake, my sister isn't anything like THAT dad. She actually takes after our other dad a lot more. She always says I take afterโ€“โ€“well colonel dad I guess."
She chuckles just thinking about it, especially since Roxie and Adam had both said on more than one occasion, that Rose & Dorothy were both practically carbon copies of their parents in different ways. Suffice it to say, Dorothy herself seems to enjoy the idea of being where she's at right now.
"Well the good news is, Sanctuary is on the safer side so commerce of varying types has started to flourish here. I'm sure you'll have some success now that this place is turning into something more akin to normal."
A pause comes when the inquiry comes regarding the Minutemen. She knows in some way she wants to be part of the organization but she's never really paused to take the time and figure it out.
"I honestly don't know. My parents don't really talk about that kind of stuff with us. Really the main reason my sister is even there is because she's been hounding our parents since she was nineteen, and she just reached the age where they feel comfortable letting her enlist."
"Huh. Well, sometimes personality traits run in a family like genetics." Yun commented.
She followed the girl, looking around the neighborhood. It seemed they had really worked hard on building this place back up. It wasn't just livable it was...almost homey. Something she didn't see in a lot of the free standing settlements.
"Well that's good. I've just have had...issues since I'm not seen as a 'valuable' trader." She chuckled. Something that had stayed the same that she could do without was people undervaluing the arts. Like...she understood it. Especially those who were obviously struggling. But goddamn would 50 caps for a picture really kill some of the richer folk?
But...hopefully she could get some business here.
"You mentioned your sister wanting to be part of the Minutemen - what about you? You don't seem to interested in it."

"Like I said, he doesn't like to talk about it much, but it seems like my older sister is the same. Her name is Rose, and she's named after our other dad's mother. Grandma Rose."
The more she thinks about it, the more it occurs to her that her parents had VASTLY different methodologies when it came to their grandparents. She tried not to prod, because it seemed like every time someone brought up her Grandma Dorothy that her dad seemed to WINCE a little just thinking about it.
EVEN ROSE who was as open as possible, would be the first to say to not bother bringing up their grandparents as it only caused strife. She pauses briefly, moving her way up the street to Vault Park as she hums quietly.
"I'm sure you'll be fine. Most of the time if you're allowed into Sanctuary you're cleared by the Minutemen, but asking never hurts. They've been trying to support the growth of small traders & businesses getting set up in town so I don't see why it'd be a problem."
Eh - Duke and Sparky were still pretty good names at least.
"Dorothy is a good name. And it's even better when a name is shared with someone meaningful." Yun replied as she followed the girl. It sounded like her dad was tight lipped about this Grandma Dorothy but...who was she to judge?
Sanctuary...she remembered this neighborhood. Well. Her mother telling her about it at least. Newest little development in what little land could be spared in this area. Mom was more than a little displeased, saying it could have been used for a park and that there were already 'too many people' in the city.
The memory of her mother made her smile to herself some. Sad and somber but a smile.
"If he needs anyone to make any or touch up old ones, I'm more than able to do so."

She chuckles a little waving her hand at the words. She knew the origins of her own name, he dad had sat her down one day when she couldn't sleep and he'd been taking the dogs for a midnight walk.
"No no, they're my dad's dogs. Duke & Sparky. But I am aware of the name and it's significance. It was my grandma's name in fact."
She figures it's better to say it outright. Jamie didn't talk about Grandma Dorothy much, but what she'd been able to gather is that she was a good woman but her life was difficult and complicated, but she did her best when push came to shove.
"Apparently according to my sister, she's buried by the Castle, but I don't really know much else."
AT THE REQUEST, she offers a smile before gesturing.
"It's right this way. Sanctuary's pretty easy to navigate once you get the hang of things. My dad has been pushing for street signs and directories to be added now that more people are settling down here and starting to call it home."
Intense? She's met plenty of intense people in the wasteland. So was this prewar intense or wasteland intense? Because she wasn't sure she had the mental energy to deal with the latter.
"Ah, workaholic..." She nodded before raising a brow at her name.
"One of your dogs doesn't happened to be named Toto?" God, when was the last time she saw that movie? Her mother loved Somewhere Over the Rainbow. ...Maybe she could find a holotape of the song at the very least.
"Do you mind leading me to Vault Park? I'm not too familiar with this area to be honest." Plus maybe he'd be less...intense if his own child introduced him to her.
She really needed the caps and a stable settlement was more likely to buy art.

She pauses for a moment, her head canting to the side as she crosses her arms for a second.
"I'll tell you, but you might want to be mentally prepared, my dad is...INTENSE. He comes here on leave, and he tries to relax but he's never really NOT working. That saidโ€“โ€“he tends to visit Vault Park a lot with our dogs."
She glances up at the dusk approaching before offering the smallest grin on her face before continuing.
"He should be there right now in factโ€“โ€“and yeah, my sister Rose wants to be a Minuteman, so she travels to the Castle every so often with him. I'm not totally sure what she's learning but she seems happy."
She smiles.
"Dorothy. Dorothy Landry."
Oh - Minutemen. Thank fucking God.
She relaxed some, nodding as she spoke. "Well, makes since I suppose, but where would I find him while he's here...You know I don't think I asked you your name. I'm Yun." She stuck her hand out to the girl, smiling a bit.
"Your sister going to follow in his footsteps you think? Or does she just like getting out of the settlement."
She didn't get to interact too much with kids, but it was nice when she did. One thing that didn't change was how kids could be. Sweet, curious and often with little filter. And that was a comfort to Yun. To know some things about humans were still the same.

"He's typically in the Castle. Colonel Jamie Lawson, Commonwealth Minutemen as he'd say."
She almost has to laugh at how silly it sounds hearing herself say it out loud. Her father was the strong serious type, not unlike MANY of the people in the Minutemen's ranks.
"But every now and then he comes back this way and spends some time here while Colonel Garvey takes over the reigns for a little bit. Lately my older sister has been spending a lot of time traveling back & forth with him."
"It can be for sure." She replied with a small smile. "Paints can be a pain to get, but charcoal is pretty abundant. And it's an excuse to go out and see things and meet people."
Good and bad.
She nodded, looking around some. "And where would one usually find your dad? ...Wait leave?" Her brows furrowed some. Leave like...in the military? Was he BoS? No...this place would probably have more of a Brotherhood presence if he was...

She pauses momentarily, listening to the explanation as she ponders what's being said. Art in the wasteland was almost something of a novelty she feared. Though it could be found, but it'd become so rare that it was saddening to think about.
"I get that, but it's nice to see you are able to do so...I suspect that's probably an interesting life, if nothing else."
SHE isn't entirely sure if she'd say she'd want to live that way, but she had so little frame of reference for life outside sanctuary. Her parents had ensured her safety that way, but at the same time limited her exposure to the 'real world'. At the follow up statement, she pauses, pursing her lips before speaking.
"My dad probably. He's on leave now so you could probably find him around here somewhere."
Yun raised a brow at the other's response. As far as she experienced, a lot of people traveled around - given that a lot of the wasteland was still pretty hostile in most areas. But...she supposed if the area you were in was secure you wouldn't want to.
"Gotta travel to sell my stuff." She replied. "People don't really come seeking out art any more."
"Well, I was hoping to set up a booth or something for a few days is all. You know who I can talk to about that?" She asked, leaning on the makeshift cart she had dragged along this far, filled with her paintings and sketches. Her Mister Handy hovered near by, robotic eyes looking around their surroundings.

She furrows her brow, taking a seat as she eyes the other woman with a small frown on her face. Admittedly she's glad to see she's not horribly maimed, but it never meant she enjoyed seeing her injured at all.

She asks, but she has a feeling she already knows the answer. Usually it was a rare occurrence for a Colonel to not know what went on in the Castle, but there was always the chance he wasn't in right now."
