the meeks-martins weren't notoriously known for being gold-medal athletes. at least, that had fallen with his mother and, apparently, his uncle, but sports? sports was chad's thing. more specifically, football. where mindy excelled in academics, there were football trophies dating back to the peewee ages that chad had earned. he wanted to go to school on a scholarship, play college ball, and buy himself some time to figure out what he wanted for himself and his future . . . but it took one night and a brush with death for that to be all stripped away.
chad knew it was a miracle he survived the ghostface attacks. if he didn't figure that out deep down, he was reminded of it at every corner. he was reminded of it every time he undressed and saw the scars that discolored his skin. so, he should be grateful, right? but with woodsboro making the state tournament his final year of playing and not being cleared to head back on the field? it was bittersweet. the time he had bought with playing ball in college was over . . . and what was left?
he had lingered around after the championship game, so much so that the lights were due to be shut off at any second, but he couldn't find it in him to leave. the moment he left the field, it was over. so, he sat on the bench, dressed in a woodsboro hoodie and its matching sweatpants. he stared blankly at out at the disturbed grass from the game, even when he heard the soft patter of feet behind him. he knew it'd be one of three people - mindy, his mom, or tara . and frankly, he didn't know who he could stomach the most right now.
"i'm coming, i know," he breathed out, eyes flickering across the field. "i just need a minute to clear my head."
