There was a time when her face was projected to the furthest reaches of the galaxy, so being recognized wasn't a surprise.

"I am." Some days she wished it wasn't so that she could go back in time and convince her eight year old self to pursue poetry instead of politics.

Every decision she'd ever made had led her here, heartbroken, separated from her children, and in hiding.

"Though I don't usually go by the name you're thinking of these days."

"I'm an old friend of Ben's." She'd been so fortunate that she'd been informed of Obi-Wan's name change before coming across Leia, the fact that her daughter was here shook Padmé to her core.

All she wanted was to scoop Leia up and never let go.

But she couldn't. She wasn't Leia's mother. She was a stranger and a stranger she would remain.

"Ben's going to be alright. Are you hungry? We can get you something to eat while you wait."

"Hello, Leia." (AU where Padmé is a part of the Rebel cell that helps Leia and Obi-Wan!)

She had been zoning out as a way to protect herself. She felt so small in a universe that was too big. To top it all of, the one person that had been her rock through all this was in the medbay.

She jumped when her name was called.

“Oh! Who are you?”

"Battles I've waged, lives I've mourned." Most people looked at Padmé and saw her beauty. It made them forget the things she'd done. It made them underestimate her.

It was useful sometimes.

"I am not just a pretty face, I am the former queen of Naboo who fought for her planet during the Trade Federation's Occupation. Don't underestimate me."

Padmé's heart was pounding, while on the outside, she was the picture of serenity and confidence. Inside, she was a wreck.

Leia was here. One of her babies was here.

After nineteen years, she was reunited with one of her children.

The doors opened, and Leia's words reached her ears.

'What does she want with me?'

"To see my daughter." The words were out of Padmé's mouth before she could stop herself.

The room went silent.

"Hello, Leia."

"Please tell me you did not bring the Princess of Alderaan to my base!" Padmé hissed to Obi-Wan as she watched Leia like a hawk. Even if her shattered heart soared at the sight of her daughter, Leia was too young to know about the Rebellion or who Padmé herself truly was.

"She is ten, what were you thinking?"

"Then you never knew me." Padmé said, openly glaring at the man she once called her husband, she had made decisions. Decisions that had nothing to do with him or their children, and ones that did.

"If anything, you are the one who has never made a decision for yourself, you're a prisoner in that suit, a slave to the Emperor."

"That. Is not what I asked." Padmé said, eyes flashing, she would fight like hell if she had too, anything to be free and keep her children safe.

"Where am I? What have you done to me?"

Padmé squared her shoulders, a part of her was afraid, but she would not let this man see her fear.

“Where am I, Lord Vader?” She asked, she’d have to track down Obi-Wan once she escaped, and find her children. Silently she sent up a quick prayer that all three were safe and sound.

The woman could be terrifying in her own way, there was a time when he feared touching her. 

“In my grip, there is a no safer place.” Or dangerous to the perspective of those involved. He had found her and yuet the woman didn’t see through his mask.

The mission had gone as wrong as it could have possibly gone, Leia had been captured by the Empire. And now Padmé was gambling everything to get her back.

She considered herself brave, after all she had taken on the Trade Federation at only fourteen years old.

But the sound of mechanical breathing sent chills down Padmé's spine.

"Hello, Anakin. Surprised to see me?"

Padmé hastily blinked back tears, she could have heard them coming from thirty clicks or more. The Path had worked with only a few major bumps along the way, but now she must face her own daughter, and pretend to be a stranger.

Stepping into Leia's line of sight, she swallowed a lump that formed in her throat.

"Your Highness," she greeted, trying to smile.

"It is lovely to see you again, I'm General Amidala."

"Nor should you be," Padmé said.

"We don't want to hurt anyone, especially you." The general gestured to a vacant seat nearby.

"Why don't you take a seat?"

Padmé placed her hand in Sabé's, she knew the handmaiden didn't completely trust her. And if Padmé was in her friends place, she wouldn't trust her either.

Luke and Leia and their Nanny Droid were already on the transport when Padmé and Sabé arrived. And they ran to their mother on sight. Padmé, knelt to hug her babies. It may be the last time she see them for a very long time.

"I love you both so much." She whispered, she needed to move quickly the transport doors were closing.

"Be good." She then turned to Sabé, and smiled sadly.

"Take care of them for me?" And with that, Padmé ran for the doors.

“You aren’t asking me. I was asked years ago. I made my choice then.”

It was a contract Queen Amidala and her trusted handmaidens shared and some – Versé …  Cordé … carried through. It was Sabé’s duty, far longer than was required. She hadn’t continued to swap with Padmé during her Senatorial reign for thrills or pride.

Sabé had never been known for docile behavior even as a handmaiden. “Would you be questioning this if you were still queen?” She challenged with a firmer tone. 

“Sabé, don’t be difficult.” Padmé said, firmly. She never wanted to pull rank in their friendship, but if it would save Sabé’s life, she would.

“Go, get on the transport. Look after Luke and Leia for me.”

Sabé’s jaw set. Telling her not to be difficult was like ordering the two suns on Tatooine not to rise. But she saw the reflection of the queen’s resolve in Padmé’s eyes – the same look during the war on Naboo – and knew she would not be able to convince Padmé to leave her behind.

The control room was almost empty. That meant the last of the rebels were making their way to hanger. Luke and Leia would have been the first transported with some of the medical crew.

“Alright,” she held her hand out, nervous Padmé would not follow if she left first, “come on then.”

"Pad...me?" Anakin had left Sriluur after being in hiding for a few years. He had no idea his wife had survived. All he knew was what the holo net had said when the funeral had taken place. A grief stricken Skywalker had fled after Vader confronted him in the senate building. There he witnessed Mace Windu being slaughtered by Palpatine. During the duel, he was forced to retreat after being injured. Now he stood several feet away from Amidala. Did she think him to be the monster that wore his face? @ostracizedjedi

"Anakin." Despite herself she was shaking, not with fear but with rage. It was because of him that she had to give up their children, and go into exile.

"What do you want?"

"Leave them alone, Anakin." Her palms were slick with sweat as Padmé pointed her blaster at the man she once called husband.

"Let them go, we both know it's not Obi-Wan and the child you really want... it's me."

Padmé was running, Bail had informed her about Leia's kidnapping, and how he was going to Tatooine to beg Obi-Wan for help. Securing herself in her quarters, Padmé pulled her commlink out of her pocket and prayed he'd pick up.

Finally he answered, and Padmé wasted no time.

"Obi-Wan, what is going on, where is Leia?"
