๐‘ฏ๐’†๐’‚๐’…๐’„๐’‚๐’๐’๐’ - dwarfish culture on appearance.
In the dwarf culture, appearances are valued much differently than in the world of Men or Elves. While both races look towards a more clean cut appearance; dwarfs look at the braid, beads and beard.
Thorin, Fili and Kili are seen as less than appealing due to their short beards and stubble. Whe technically Thorin still has his long beard in the book, my headcanon is that he'd cut it in honor of those who passed in Moria. Of course, again; in the book he wasn't the one at the battle, his cousin Daรญn II was. I like to think that Thorin was also there fighting along side his Grandfather and cousin, which is also where his younger brother, Frerin, lost his life. Learning of the losses he would have cut his beard and grown it back over time.
Fili is still quite young though he is of age, his beard is just slower in growing. And Kili was still in his teens by the time the quest happened. Although it's stated he is of age, it would explain why he has the stubble.

In both the movies and my book headcanon, Thranduil just gives off the vibes of one of those dads who always sees his child as his little baby, no matter how big or strong that child grows, and heโ€™s just not ready to let Legolas go.
I think this is further inflamed by his PTSD from the War of the Last Alliance, as he canโ€™t handle the thought of his innocent son being exposed to that kind of trauma like he was.
And whether his book wife tragically died like his movie wife or not, either way, life in spider-infested Mirkwood would alone increase his paranoia about his sonโ€™s safety.
I think this is why Legolas became an archer; Thranduil wanted to be sure Legolas knew self-defense just in case, but he never wanted Legolas to have to face war. (I personally headcanon that Legolasโ€™ mother is an archer, and this is why he chose to develop that particular skillset.)
I also think this is the in-universe reason why Legolas is nowhere to be found in The Hobbit book. Thranduil simply refuses to include his son in the Battle of Five Armies, perhaps with the excuse that heโ€™s not old enough to fight and instead, as Crown Prince, needs to watch over their people while the king is gone.
Therefore, when Legolas joins the Fellowship and comes home forever changed, this is when Thranduil finally has to admit that his son has left the nest.

๐‘ฏ๐’†๐’‚๐’…๐’„๐’‚๐’๐’๐’๐’” - Kili, Son of Dis.
Kili never really knew of his father. Though as he was growing up, Thorin and Fili had told him stories of his adad.
Both Dwalin and his uncle Thorin trained the brothers in how to properly use weapons; swords, axes, etc. However, he is self taught with archery, learning from a young age only becoming better over time.
While Fili may look like their father, Kili inherited a lot of the dwarrow's personality. It's something Thorin had noticed when helping Dis raise the boys, only continuing to grow further as the lad had gotten older.
๐‘พ๐’‰๐’†๐’ ๐’Š๐’• ๐’„๐’๐’Ž๐’†๐’” ๐’•๐’ ๐’“๐’๐’Ž๐’‚๐’๐’„๐’†..
Kili is devoted to his One. Once he has someone, there is no way you can pull him away from the one he loves.
His protective nature comes out more while he is very protective of his kin, his partner will always come first and he will defend them when he knows they are in the right.
Don't expect gifts? Kili is the type to make gifts for his loved ones - particularly his partner. It's his way of showing appreciation, or at least one of the ways to show his appreciation.
Outside of his kin, his partner is the only one allowed to really even touch his hair. Be it a braid or just merely brushing out the brown locks. It's an intimate gesture that dwarves believe to be shared between their partner and themselves.

Bard is descended from Girion through his father.
There are multiple scars he has upon his body from his younger years of training, some from later years. Right upon his forehead there is a small cut he received from the bell when on the tower, during Smaug's attack on Lake Town.
His wife passed away when Tilda was born due to illness after birth.
While it is common knowledge within the town, Bard does not like to spread the knowledge that he is descended from Girion due to the disappointment of knowing his ancestor failed in killing the dragon when Smaug first took over Erebor.
He prefers wines to ale.
Knowledgeable in a few languages: Dalish (the people of Dale's first language ), Westron, and some Sindarin. He is known to learn through listening and studying some texts that had been left by his ancestor.

John had grown up in a family that loved, but were strict. Losing his father at a young age, he had to be the head of the house and work to help support his mother and sister. This had, of course, made many believe he was a workaholic.
There are very few people he has come to respect outside of his family: Richard Hale, Margaret Hale, Nicholas Higgins and Mr. Hale's friend/former university friend, Mr. Bell. Gaining his respect is not so simple but once earned, it will be hard to lose this.
Romance is not something that has come to him easily. Being a mill owner brought all sorts of prospects but it is very rare that he ever indulge in such emotions. When he meets the right person, he begins to open up slowly at first.
He's a very private person, keeping all of his struggles to himself and doesn't ask for help when he should. John sees it as his job as man of the house to take care of the burdens that lay before the family.

๐‘ฏ๐’†๐’‚๐’…๐’„๐’‚๐’๐’๐’ - ๐’‡๐’๐’๐’˜๐’†๐’“๐’”
Elyssa is a lover of flowers, particularly white roses and poppies. This is because the poppies are in connection to her mother, while the white rose is in connection to her grandmother on her adopted father's side of the family.
From the time she was little she could remember seeing her mother's hair adorned in a crown of poppies that had been made by Elyssa herself, or her aunt. It was a symbol of hope and peace - a sign that stated they would live in peace for the time being. Her mother always encouraged her to do as she wanted, to learn more about the world around them. Instilling hope in her young daughter.
White roses were a symbol of purity, youthfulness, love and new beginnings. When Elyssa had come into her life, it was a sign that new beginnings were to happen - good ones. That her young granddaughter would eventually come to do great things in life. To her, the white rose had been a symbol of her granddaughter.

๐‘ฏ๐’†๐’‚๐’…๐’„๐’‚๐’๐’๐’๐’” - Elyssa Blackvale
Elyssa was born to a human woman and an elf that was under Elrond's tutelage, making her half human/ half elf.
Her nickname, 'moonlight', was given to her because of the night she was conceived and because of when her mother, Illiyria, had given birth to her. Both nights had a full moon.
She is a practitioner of the healing arts, but she is also skilled with weaponry as well. Her comfort is in the healing part simply because it's where she knows she's best in.
When Thorin and company arrive in Rivendell, she is their first point of contact after Elrond and Lindir greet them, and before they sit down for food. It was her duty to ensure they were not injured and thus were sent to her.
Some of Thorin's company had immediately taken a liking to her, some it took a bit of time to get used to - especially for Thorin. Being half elf had set them on edge a bit, but with time they'd grown to like her. It was her sense of humor and her demeanor that showed them she was not like all elves or humans.
Elyssa never knew of her father, thus she really didn't know of her heritage being a hybrid. As she'd grown and gotten older, her mother had noticed she'd taken an interest in reading books on elves, but also had taken an interest in healing which had all been from her father's side. It was when she became of age that her mother had decided to tell her of her lineage.
It took some convincing but she travels with the dwarves on the rest of their quest, often singing songs and telling stories to keep them occupied - conjuring up something with the resident Hobbit.

Thornton has been known to be a dedicated, hard worker his entire life. It was how, when he'd gotten older, he was able to take up being a master of the cotton business he runs.
While his colleagues smoked consistently, he only smokes a cigar once every now and then.
John became head of the household at a very young age, due to his father having ended his life because of so blindly laying bets and losing all of the family money.
He finds himself very difficult to love, almost unloveable due to the fact that his main focus has always been his family, and the business.
It's never a rare moment to find Thornton with a book in hand.
