“ what do you mean we're not going to make it? what the fuck happened? ” panic starts, her head shaking in disbelief. “ the area was clear— we checked the perimeter and we even barricaded the doors— what went wrong? ”

“ a lot of these zones aren't very welcoming to outsiders, so unless you've been there since the very beginning with them, they usually won't let you in. ” she leads him down a dirt path. “ for the place we're going, a few of the people there know me enough. i'm going to be vouching for you, so don't do anything that would cause problems when we get there and we should be good. ”

Seth was a bit confused about why she was just mentioning this information. "If there have been safe places all along then why haven't we been there?" He asked her as that seemed like a logical place to be. Seth didn't have as many survival skills as he would have liked to have had for this sort of situation. "If it is so safe, do you think we will even be able to get in?"

“ they have things more secured than you think. some have been safe since the start of all this. ” she retorts before gesturing and grabbing his arm for him to follow her. “ we're going. i know of one nearby that used to be a small town. it was gated off by the miliary when things started and a few people stayed to fortify it. they have the whole thing wired and booby trapped. it's the safest place i know. ”

Seth wasn't sure that she understood how serious the situation was. Things were not likely to get better but rather were only going to continue to get worse. "Those places might be safe for now, but who is to say they will be safe forever?" Seth asked her as he was just exhausted. "We can go if you want, but I don't think that it's going to be the magical solution."

“ okay, good. we need to be more than careful. ” she continues to lead him out of the forest and eventually to a grassy clearing. “ it's there. ” she gestures toward a few buildings surrounded by chain-link fencing, metal walls, and makeshift spikes in the distance. “ hopefully they'll be okay with us going in without warning. i used to radio them beforehand instead of just showing up. ”

"I see." Seth said as it was easier to just agree than it was to argue at this point. He still wondered why they hadn't at least tried to get into these areas earlier if Caitlin had known about them. "I am not going to cause problems." Seth confirmed, a bit offended that she would even suggest that he would. He knew she wanted to live and wasn't going to screw that up for her.

“ if you're tired of moving we can look for a zone or secure some homestead. ” she suggests in an attempt to talk some sense into him. “ you can't start talking liking you're going to give up just when things started to get hard. you only get one fucking life. even if you don't feel that way, you're living right now. sure, it's not all peaches and cream, but you're alive. that's all that matters. ”

Seth wasn't sure that he agreed with her. Sure, they could run around forever but that didn't mean that they were actually living their lives. There was a difference between living and surviving. "Running around for your life for years isn't really any way to actually live."

“ no, it's not. you make it sound like there's no way for you to be safe. ” her eyebrows tense as she continues to reason with him. “ there are plenty of zones where people are living 'normal' lives, and they're even raising families. they're not on the run or hiding. let me take you to one of them, and you can see what i mean... maybe it'll change your mind. ”

Seth was amazed with how positive that Caitlin was still able to be considering everything. "It's an endless cycle or hiding and running." He pointed out as there was no real end in sight. "If there was an end in sight it might be different but I don't want to do this for the next fifty years." Seth replied to her with a small shrug of his shoulders. He just felt defeated.

“ fuck, seth. ” she heaves a sigh as the panic's replaced by disbelief. “ so you're going to give up just like that? this is the world now— it's never going to fucking end. the best thing we can do is adapt and live out our lives as best as we can and if that means we have to keep moving, then so be it. ”

Seth shook his head at her. "I don't mean right now. I mean in general, Caitlin. What are we going to do? Run around forever? It doesn't seem like this is ever coming to an end." Seth replied as he was starting to feel like this just wasn't a way to live.
