six months ago, he had watched his best friend shot in the line of duty. had held him in his arms, bleeding, until the ambulance had come and taken him away. before he’d forced himself to clean up and find the mans wife — tell her what had happened and then tried picking up any slack that needed to be. three months ago, the world had turned on its head and the dead had started walking. three months since he’d packed up and tried to get to adrian ( failed ) and packed the third of their once-trio away. eventually they’d managed to find relative safety among a small group away from the city — settling near a quarry that provided an adequate water source. in the weeks since, two tents had eventually become one and a relationship flourished ( first one based on support and comfort that had morphed into something more ). that morning, he’d pressed a kiss to the woman’s hair with the promise to be back a few hours later.

waking in a hospital had been like waking in a nightmare. stumbling around in a hospital gown until he’d made it to the station and then later his home ( realizing neither his wife nor his partner was anywhere to be found ). he’d stumbled upon a couple and their son — they’d explained what had happened, brought him up to date on the horror that had become their world. adrian had made it clear he planned to find his wife and best friend, and eventually had been forced to part ways with people who’d taught him how to survive in this new world. he’d wandered until eventually he’d stumbled across a group of supply runners ( happened to get them out of a sticky situation ) and been invited back to their camp. sore muscles stretched as he unfolded from the back of a truck, hopping out of the bed before taking a few hesitant steps toward the group. dark orbs watched couples reunite with a deep ache in his chest ( things might have been a bit rocky between his wife and him before his accident, but he’d still loved the woman ). it was a few minutes later that he earned his shock — when adrian had stumbled into view followed closely by his high school sweetheart. “baby,” he’d muttered, shaky steps eating up the distance between the trio before he’d dragged the woman into a fierce hug ( reaching out moments later to bring the other man closer with a huff ). “never thought i’d see your ugly mug again,” he greeted jace with a grin, pulling back to give his wife a kiss at her hairline. “y’all alright?”
