Why her?

Of all people, why her? Were such feelings that indescribable to name and reason with in such a short amount of time? Alhaitham immediately shook off that question. Of course he knew.  

In fact, he knew this too well, how he was trying to prolong this calm before the storm. He never liked sensing a downpour of feelings, let alone feeling them, and he hated how easily she made it happen. Yet seeing that woman covering her face with a book she swore she’d read, hearing her steady breaths, already imagining how her tired eyes finally closed for a rest, he knew how he’d never look away from that woman sprawled on the couch. 

Alhaitham found his own lips curling into a little smile just imagining the chaos her groggy self will bring in about an hour, and he identified one emotion in knowing how he handled her so well all these years: pride. 

Perhaps he didn’t need to try so hard to prevent such storms. Perhaps the idea of surrendering would lead to liberation. Perhaps in doing so, he’d be a reason to make her someday.
