“we're running out of time.”

it's as if time halts for a moment as you utter those words into existence. your voice was quiet but that obviously did nothing to soften the blow, for you feel riki freeze mid-action.

your eyes remain trained on your fingers as you fidget with them on your lap. you don't look up. you don't want to see whatever expression is painted on his face, you're too scared to.

“i'm right, aren't i? you've been dodging the question for weeks now.”

your voice comes out choked but you force your face to remain passive.

a defeated sigh rings out from beside you and you notice his shoulders slump in your peripheral vision.

the room is quiet for a moment. you can sense your boyfriend, soon to be your ex, trying to find the right words to say, mulling them over in his brain before saying them out loud. his hand reaches for yours but you pull away before you can even register what you're doing. his fingers collapse into a loose fist, as though even they were dejected, and his hand slowly retreats from your vision, almost begging you to change your mind.

“i’m sorry.”

“for what? keeping me waiting and letting me cry every night for the past week over the mere thought of losing you? us? that's not a big deal at all!”

“what? you-you've been... crying?”

riki is facing you now, his tone carries a noticeable undertone of surprise, but you still don't look up. your silence answers for you.

“at least tell me now, are you moving away or not?”

you ask after a beat, finally turning to face him. his lips purse as he avoids eye contact and you already know the answer. regardless, you wait for verbal confirmation.

part of your brain screams at you to back away, take back the question and lock him in a closet because you weren't ready to let go, not so soon.

“most probably, yes”

“you told me you would decide last month.”

another sigh, “fine. yes, I am going.”

the admission plunges you in a whirlwind of emotions. your ears are ringing now. memories flash in your mind of the unfulfilled promises you made to one another, the seemingly insignificant ones as well as the big ones. you're watching a movie in your head where the scenes are moving too quick to allow any space for comprehension.

“then why did you lie earlier?”

“i didn't want to talk about this right now, i didn't want to tell you…”

you can't deal with this right now, you need to clear your head.

your body works on autopilot as you stand up abruptly. his fingers clasp around your wrist almost reflexively, keeping you from walking away. you can't find the willpower to look at him.

he pulls you towards him and you fall on his lap.

“we've still got a couple of months…”

there's the faintest hint of hope in the sentence. maybe hope wasn't exactly the right word for it but for it but you were too lost in the moment to give a damn.

“i love you.”

riki tenderly whispers into your ear and that's all it takes for the floodgates to open. you curl in closer to him, clutching his t-shirt as your sobs break loose. he wastes no time wrapping his arms around your quivering frame.

“i love you too.”

he buries his face into the side of your neck and it's not long before you feel your collar dampen from his tears. he isn't ready to let go either.

both of you had known this moment would come one day, and dreaded its arrival, but none of you were prepared for heartache to come knocking on your door so soon.

; a/n: i wasn't planning on writing anything in 10th grade bc I had a massive case of writer's block but here i am! i tried writing in present tense for the first time, did you guys like it better? sorry, it's pretty short. my exams are around the corner so i probably won't be putting anything out again for a few months at least. hope you liked the fic!

a/n: this has been stuck in my drafts for a long time, and i finally finished it :) now, i will be getting to your requests.

the bed slightly dipped, as the boy climbed in besides her. he was trying to be very quiet since it was already night, and everything was peaceful.

but he failed, when he felt y/n stir and turn around, facing him, "where were you?" her voice was a little raspy, and grayson couldn't help but smile at her tired state.

the girl had stayed up, waiting for her boyfriend, but soon sleep took over her and she went to bed. her arm wrapped around his waist as she snuggled closer to him, missing his warmth.

"just had to do some papers," his hand went to her waist, pulling her closer to his chest.

"you should take a break."

"hm."

"you know i'm right."

silence.

grayson hawthorne played an important role in his family. he wasn't the eldest nor the youngest, but almost everything stood on his shoulders. he was raised differently than his brothers. one day, he was going to inherit the heir, so it was important for grayson to do everything right. not make a single mistake.

but how can a person be happy if he can't let himself slip? if he can't let himself breathe and let go.

that's why y/n didn't let him get lost in the hawthorne life. even though grayson has a strong character, the girl isn't afraid to speak her mind. that's what pulled the boy towards her. the wise heart. the honesty. and of course the love that she gave to others.

"just because others have made unrealistic expectations about you doesn't mean you should follow them. you are your own person, grayson. sometimes it's okay to take a break, even if some may get mad."

and just like that, grayson fell in love with her even more.

"you know," his hand went to her cheek, "sometimes i wonder how lucky i got with you," he stroked her skin, his touch making goosebumps appear on her arms.

"i think you should stop with that cheesy crap," the girl smiled and rolled on her back.

not even a second later his hand went to her hip and she felt light kisses be planted on her neck, "i can't help it if i have a beautiful girl with me," his lips moved along her jaw, stopping upbove hers, "but you are so much more then beautiful to me, y/n."

"i'm serious about what i said grayson," she looked into his eyes, her hand went to the back of his neck, "i love you and i don't want you to over stress yourself. i just want to help."

"believe me, you're helping me a lot, love," with that, his lips connected with hers, into a passionate kiss. and in this moment, grayson hawthorne was reminded again that no amount of money was as important as the girl beneath him.

with the love that they felt for each other, the couple would get through anything. just as long as they were together.

you entered the passcode to your studio apartment, letting yourself in after being met with an affirmative *beep*

after carelessly tossing your backpack onto the kitchen counter, you miraculously managed to drag yourself to your bed, collapsing on it right away

thank god it's saturday tomorrow

that was the only thought in your mind at present. you'd had a hectic week—no, a hectic fortnight...or was it a month...? your pre-existing headache grew worse as you tried to recall so you gave up eventually

your eyelids grew heavy and just as you were about to board your train to dreamland, star lost by stray kids started playing from the front pocket of your pants. wait, no, that couldn't be right. pockets don't make sounds...oh, it was only your phone ringing

an annoyed grunt escaped your mouth before you checked the caller id. a tired but genuine smile speak across your face when you saw who it was. you accepted the call and put it on speaker

"how's my girl doing?"

you could almost hear the smile in jay's voice, which, in turn, made your own smile widen. "i'm feeling pretty wiped honestly"

jay knew that, he'd noticed the way your smile didn't reach your eyes these days, how your shoulders seemed deflated, the way you looked as if you could pass out at any given moment. of course, he'd be there to catch you if you did

"have you had anything to eat yet?"

"no...sorry"

jay had expected as much

"want me to come over? i can make you something to eat, and then we could cuddle or watch a movie or something"

"yes please, i could really use your cuddles. only if it's not too much of a bother, of course"

"nothing's ever a bother when it comes to you. i'll be there in 10. wait for me, yeah?"

you hummed in response and hung up with an "i love you" which he mirrored back. his soft voice when he spoke to you always warmed your heart. you dozed off thinking about how you truly had the best boyfriend ever

the clatter of pots and pans jolted you awake

you screwed your eyes shut as a groan escaped you, the blaring headache coming back. you heard someone cursing, probably the same person responsible for the racket that disrupted your sleep

sitting up, you began to rub your eyes when you heard a sequence of frantic footsteps, getting progressively closer, and then a pair of arms wrapping around you

you looked up to see jay with an apologetic expression on his face

"i'm soo sorry 'bout that sweetheart, I was trying to be quiet but..."

you mumbled an "it's okay" while hugging him back. after staying in that position for some time, jay broke the silence

"how about you wash up yeah? i'll be in the kitchen"

you noded, shooting him a smile—which he returned—before getting up and making your way to your bathroom

when you came back out, feeling considerably more rested and energized, you found your bed was made, and your previously-cluttered desk was much tidier. a smile made it's way on your face, knowing it could be none other than jay's work

jay noticed you as you approached the kitchen counter, his face lighting up

"you're right on time for dinner!"

"dinner? don't you mean lunch?"

he tilted his head a little to the side in confusion

"it's 7:00 p.m. sweetie"

"already??? have i been out for that long? why didn't you wake me up??"

jay chuckled, "you looked so cute sleeping, i didn't wanna wake you. plus, you seemed like you needed it"

"fair enough"

by then jay announced dinner was ready so you helped him set the table and sat down for dinner. the noodles he'd made were simply delectable. it reminded you of the way you used to make them with your sister. you mentioned it to him among other compliments

"well, where do you think I got the recipe?" he winked. your mouth fell open. no way.

"i literally love you so much"

"love you too" he replied with his adorable smile

the first time the doubt seeped in was 6 months ago. hongjoong had called to cancel your weekly date, apologising profusely over the phone, saying he would make it up to you; but that wasn’t what had set things off. it wasn’t uncommon for him to cancel during the morning of the date every now and then, you yourself would sometimes, whether it be too tired, or feeling sick, anything. it was him cancelling the next week that made you begin to worry. hongjoong is never one to cancel twice, always prioritising you over work. you had brushed it off, yet the unsettling feeling still lingers in the back of your mind. by the third time he cancelled, you confronted him, calling him after he sent a short text, saying ‘need to cancel, sorry’, only to be sent to voicemail. 

sighing to yourself, you knew there was no point in going to his studio, there were chances he went out with friends. when night came, you laid on the couch, trying your best to fight off the weight on your eyelids that were causing them to droop. upon hearing the door unlock, you sat up immediately, rubbing the drowsiness away in your eyes. “baby, have you been waiting for me?” hongjoong’s shocked voice travelling into your ears. “of course,” you smiled weakly, yawning, “i missed you.” “i’m sorry honey, i know i’ve been cancelling, but i thought you wouldn’t wait for me. i knew i was going to work late and i wanted you to sleep earlier,” he sat beside you, gently pushing your head into his lap, caressing your cheek gently. “i’ll always wait for you.” upon hearing that, he leaned down to kiss the crown of your head. “i love you, joong.” you were too tired to notice he never said it back.

it was thursday. you had finished classes earlier and went back to hongjoong’s apartment, hoping to visit him after not being able to see him for well over a week. you weren’t even surprised anymore when you opened the door to be met with an empty apartment. making your way over to his bedroom, you frowned upon seeing the door closed. he was never one to close his bedroom door. you slowly pushed it open and peeked your head through the doorframe, still holding on to the slim chance of him being inside, only to be met with disappointment upon seeing the light switched off. 

turning it on, your eyes widened at the sight of the messy state of his room. his desktop computer still sat by the corner of his desk, his chair swivelled a bit to the side (you smiled a bit at that, hongjoong was never one to tuck his chair back in, always complaining when it ends up getting in his way) the unmade bed, spare headphones discarded lazily on his bedside drawer, wastebasket filled with scrunched up paper balls. everything was as it should be.

you sat gingerly on his chair, spinning around a little, the turned-down picture frame next to his computer catching your eye. without even turning it back up, you already knew which picture it was, yet you stood it straight anyway, immediately met with three polaroids side by side in a row, taken on each of yours and hongjoong’s anniversary. you remembered getting a frame with him at a nearby local store, and sitting on his bed afterwards, him carefully pulling the three polaroids from his photo album and placing them into the frame, playfully arguing with you about how to place the order of the polaroids.

the polaroid of your second anniversary was first, the one on the far left. he had taken you roller skating, except neither of you were very good at it. you let out a small laugh at the memory of him falling and pulling you down with him. you also remembered being too scared to ask someone to take a polaroid of the two of you, needing him to ask for you, giving you a quick kiss on the cheek before doing so. 

the polaroid on the far right was your third anniversary. he had remembered you mentioning off-handedly about wanting to stargaze, and did exactly that. he had eagerly lead you to the han river after a nice dinner (which you insisted on paying for), pointing out random stars and blurting out random constellation names, making up their meanings. “you see that column of stars over there? it’s called the lobster constellation. it comes from the fact that lobsters hold hands in fish tanks, because they’re married for life, or something like that? i forgot what phoebe said,” he sounded unsure of himself, “and it basically means you should kiss me” you laughed at that, but kissed him anyway.

the one in the middle was your favourite one. it was also his favourite, you liked to think. it was your first anniversary with him. it was a selfie that hongjoong insisted would work, but ended up with the two of you being a little off centre with a stranger at the background, yet it was your favourite one, because both of you had the biggest smile on your faces, with his free arm wrapped tightly around your waist, holding to as close to him as possible. 

placing the picture frame down, you leaned back against the chair, feet accidentally kicking the wastebasket tucked underneath his desk, spilling the paper balls on the floor. sighing, you bent down to pick them up, halting when you realised you recognised exactly where the papers came from. hongjoong’s diary. the one you gifted him.

you tried to resist the urge to open one of them up to read it, only to give in, taking the nearest one and opening it up. you immediately stiffened up upon reading the date written in bold at the top. your one month anniversary. your breath hitched as you read through it. you would’ve appreciated all the sweet words he had written had your name not been crossed every time it was mentioned.

swallowing thickly, you picked up a few other ones in the wastebasket, opening them up as well. you felt your heart thumping faster and faster as you read more and more entries, all of them from significant dates in your relationship; the three month anniversary, one year anniversary, first christmas, second valentine’s day, third date— you shoved them all back in the basket. it was all too much to bear. 

you silently glanced around his room again. you felt haunted by the ghostly presence of him in his room, it was like he was right here, but also not at all. it just wasn’t fair. you ignored the growing ache in your chest. you ignored the tiny cracks on the glass of the picture frame, indicating he had thrown it around at some point. you ignored the half peeled off stickers you had stuck along the base of his keyboard. you ignored the beanie you gave him for his birthday last year carelessly shoved under his mattress. you ignored how the photos on his corkboard had pins going directly in between the two of you. 

you ignored how deep down, you knew hongjoong no longer loved you the same way he did. when it happened, or why, you had no idea, nor did you have the motivation to ask, knowing there was no point in asking questions you didn’t want answers to. but what you couldn’t ignore, was the longing feeling of wishing someone could take you back to the night you first met him, because even though this story would end the same way no matter how hard you tried to stop it, you’d do it all over again in a heartbeat.
