lim dahlia was born on the 8th of december in the year 2001, to lim jiyoung and beom sebin. her parents were fairly rich due to being being real estate developers. their lifelong dream had been to travel the world, and they had another addition to their team.

her toddler years were spent in s. korea, since her parents wanted her to make memories in the neighbourhood they had grown up in. dahlia's adventorous nature had resulted in a broken arm from climbing a tall tree in the park near their house.

they shortly moved to japan due to her father getting an offer to develop an estate in a suburb. dahlia had been only four when they had situated themselves in the country for this project. she had made friends with some children from her preschool.

a year or two had passed before they packed up everything and moved once again. the trio made a nest for themselves in the european country of the netherlands. dahlia discovered multiple dutch artist that guided her in learning the language, as well as famous singers from english speaking countries.

the rest of her child years were spent in the netherlands. her dutch had become better the more she spoke it, and her goals became clear to her one day when she saw a bagpipe player in the city. her interest in the musical instrument sky rocketed once her family went to scotland for her school holiday.

노랫말도 쓰고 곡도 만드는 가수 심현보의 노래 중 <사랑은 그런 것>이란 노래가 있다. 이 감미로운 발라드에는 이런 가사가 나온다. “둘이 걸을 땐 언제나 너의 오른쪽에 서는 게 좋아. 내 심장에 니가 좀더 가까워지는 이런 기분 모를 거야.” 이 인상적인 가사는 실제로 심현보의 개인적인 경험에서 나온 것이라고 한다. 그가 여자친구와 걸을 때 주로 오른쪽에서 걷는 습관이 있어서, 그것을 ‘내 심장에 니가 좀더 가까워지도록 하기 위함’으로 해석하고 있는 것이다.

그러나 가수 심현보의 ‘연인과의 걷기 습관’은 일반적인 남자들의 그것과는 조금 다른 것 같다. 도시인류학적 관찰 결과에 따르면, 남자들은 여자의 왼쪽에서 걷는 것을 더 선호하기 때문이다. 프랑스의 커뮤니케이션 학자 필리프 튀르셰는 길거리를 걷는 남녀 2만여 커플의 좌우 위치를 조사해본 결과, 걸을 때 남자와 여자의 위치가 애정 정도에 따라 변한다는 사실을 발견했다. 만난 지 오래 되지 않은 연인처럼, 남자와 여자가 몸을 별로 접촉하지 않은 채 서로 어깨를 나란히 하고 자유롭게 걸을 때 남자가 여자의 왼편에 서는 비율은 53% 정도였다고 한다. 그런데 남자가 포옹하듯 두 손으로 여자의 몸을 감싸안은 자세로 걷는 경우에는 남자가 여자의 왼쪽에서 걸을 확률이 73%로 올라간다. 다시 말해 자발적으로 서로를 감싸안은 상황에서 남성과 여성은 외부의 시선에 아랑곳하지 않고 자신들의 친밀함에 몰두하게 되는데, 이 경우 남자는 여성의 왼편을 선호한다는 것이다.

차도 에티켓? 속옷이론?

더 놀라운 것은, 유모차를 밀고 있는 부부를 관찰한 결과다. 아내가 유모차를 ���는 경우 남편은 아내에게서 약간 떨어져 옆에서 걷게 되는데, 이때 84%의 남자가 여자의 왼쪽에 선다고 한다. 남편이 유모차를 미는 경우에는 아내가 남편에게서 약간 떨어져 걷게 되는데, 이때에도 81%의 남편이 아내의 왼쪽에서 유모차를 민다고 한다. 도대체 남녀와 좌우 걷기 행동은 과연 어떻게 설명할 수 있을까?

실제로 서울 한복판에서 거리를 걷는 연인들을 관찰해보면, 우리나라에서도 비슷한 현상을 관찰할 수 있다. 흔히들 남자와 여자가 길을 걸을 때에는 여자를 자동차들로부터 보호하기 위해 차도에 가까운 바깥쪽에서 남자가 걸을 것처럼 보인다. 그러나 밀착된 연인일수록 ‘차도 에티켓’은 별로 신경쓰지 않는 것 같다. 요즘이야 자동차가 인도로 질주할 가능성이나, 간판이 떨어져 다칠 가능성이나 비슷하지 않은가?

이를 설명하기 위한 다양한 가설들이 있다. 네이버의 지식검색에는 이 문제에 대한 ‘속옷이론’이 등장한다. 옷의 단추를 여미는 방식이 남자와 여자가 서로 다르다. 그래서 여자가 왼쪽에 서게 되면 남자가 고개를 돌리면 단추 사이로 여자의 브래지어가 보이게 된다는 것이다. 그래서 여자가 오른편에 서면 서로 속옷이 안 보이기 때문에 남자가 여자의 왼편에 주로 서게 된다는 것이다. 흥미로운 해석이지만, 실제로는 남자가 여자의 왼쪽에 있을 때 속옷이 더 잘 보이기도 하기 때문에 그럴듯하게 들리진 않는다(그리고 애정이 깊을수록 연인들에겐 속옷이 힐끔 보이는 게 덜 중요해지지 않을까?).

얼마 전 미국 샘휴스턴주립대 심 터우충 박사는 ‘사랑한다’는 말을 할 때는 왼쪽 귀에 하는 것이 좋다는 연구 결과를 발표했다. 감성을 자극하는 말을 녹음해 100명의 왼쪽 귀와 오른쪽 귀에 들려준 결과, 왼쪽 귀로 들었을 때 더 정확히 기억했다는 것이다. 들려준 말을 정확히 기억한 수는 왼쪽 귀에 들려준 경우 70명, 오른쪽 귀에 들려준 경우 약 58명이었다. 12%포인트의 차이이긴 하지만, 사랑을 속삭일 땐 연인의 왼편에 서야 한다는 것을 이 연구 결과는 우리에게 알려주고 있다. 연구팀은 이러한 현상을 왼쪽 귀와 연결된 우뇌가 감정 조절에 관여하기 때문이라고 설명하고 있다. 남자들은 자신들이 속삭이는 사랑이 오랫동안 기억되길 바라는 심정에서 무의식적으로 여성의 왼편에서 걷는 걸까?

필리프 튀르셰는 자신의 저서 <남자는 왜 여자의 왼쪽에서 걸을까>(에코리브르, 2005)에서 ‘거리’는 사랑하는 사람들 간의 무의식적 감정의 표출 장소로서 더없이 좋은 곳이라고 주장한다. 서로 아무런 얘기도 없이 그저 몸을 접촉한 채로 길거리를 걷는 부부의 모습에서 진정한 소유관계의 현주소가 나타난다고 얘기하면서, 이 현상을 ‘통제하고자 하는 뇌의 욕구’가 표출된 것으로 해석한다.

왼쪽에서 경계하고 감시하라

애착은 때론 상대를 잃을지도 모른다는 두려움과 두 사람을 묶어주는 이 애정상태를 지속���킬 수 없게 될지도 모른다는 불안감을 동반한다. 이 두려움에 맞서 남자와 여자는 육체적으로 가까워질 뿐만 아니라 무엇보다도 좀더 서로를 통제하기 위해, 길을 걸을 때조차도 좌우 상대적인 관계를 재정비한다는 것이다. 그리고 이것은 인간의 대뇌 작용과 관련이 깊다고 말한다.

왼편에 선 남성이 앞 공간의 오른쪽 시야, 그러니까 여성을 바라보게 되는 곳은 대뇌의 왼쪽 반구가 관장한다. 그런데 왼쪽 반구는 지배와 질서 유지의 기능을 주요하게 수행하는 것이다. 오른쪽 반구가 좀더 감성적으로 반응하는 한편, 왼쪽 반구는 인간의 모든 명령을 세부적으로 관리한다. 필리프 튀르셰에 따르면, 남자는 행복한 상태를 계속 유지하고 자신의 통제 아래 여성을 두기 위한 경계와 감시를 주목적으로 여성의 왼편에 선다는 것이다. 이 통제 의지에 의해 결정된 무의식적 전략이자 행동방식이 바로 왼쪽 반구의 산물이라는 것이다. 남성들의 왼쪽 반구가 그들을 여성의 왼쪽에서 걷게 만든다는 것이다.
