Verse 11.12 - Vishwarup Darshan Yoga

दिवि सूर्यसहस्रस्य भवेद्युगपदुत्थिता ।

यदि भाः सदृशी सा स्याद्भासस्तस्य महात्मनः ॥ ११-१२॥

If a thousand suns were to blaze forth together in the sky, that would be like the splendor of that great soul.

This verse describes the effulgence of the Cosmic Form of Lord Krishna, which Arjuna beheld with his divine vision. The verse compares the brilliance of the Lord's form to the combined radiance of a thousand suns rising simultaneously in the sky. This is an attempt to convey the incomparable and indescribable glory of the Lord, who is the source of all light and energy in the universe.

The meaning of this verse is that the Lord is supremely powerful and majestic, and His form encompasses all creation and transcends it. The Lord is not limited by time, space, or causation, and His form is beyond the perception of the ordinary senses. The Lord reveals His Cosmic Form only to His pure devotees, who have surrendered to Him with love and devotion. The Cosmic Form is a manifestation of His mercy and grace, which enables the devotee to realize His greatness and abundance.

The verse also implies that the Lord is the Ultimate Reality, and everything else is dependent on Him and derived from Him. The suns are His sparks, and their light is a reflection of His splendor. The Lord is self-effulgent, and He illuminates everything else by His presence. The Lord is also the supreme enjoyer, and He displays His opulence and beauty for His own pleasure and for the delight of His devotees. The verse invites us to appreciate the Lord's magnificence and to worship Him with awe and reverence.

Similar verses from other Vedic texts that also describe the Lord's effulgence and universal form, are as follows:

Mundaka Upanishad 2.2.10-11:

तमेव भान्तमनुभाति सर्वं तस्य भासा सर्वमिदं विभाति ।

मन्दलं ब्रह्म निरकारमस्ति किं चन कर्म क्रियते मयाध्यक्षेण ॥

He alone shines, and everything shines after Him. By His light, all this shines. The Brahman sphere is without form. Whatsoever work is done by me under His supervision.

This verse from the Mundaka Upanishad declares that Brahman, or the Supreme Spirit, is the only source of light and Consciousness in the universe. Everything else is illuminated by His light, which pervades all existence. Brahman is without any material form or attributes, and He is the witness and controller of all actions.

Katha Upanishad 2.2.15:

न तत्र सूर्यो भाति न चन्द्रतारकं नेमा विद्युतो भान्ति कुतोऽयमग्निः ।

तमेव भान्तमनुभाति सर्वं तस्य भासा सर्वमिदं विभाति ॥

There the sun does not shine, nor the moon and the stars, nor these lightnings, and much less this fire.

When He shines, everything shines after Him; by His light all this is lighted.

This verse from the Katha Upanishad also affirms that Brahman, or the Supreme Self, is the only Self-luminous Reality, and all other sources of light are dependent on Him. Brahman is beyond the realm of the sun, the moon, the stars, the lightning, and the fire, which are all material phenomena. Brahman is the inner light of all beings, and by His grace, one can attain the supreme knowledge and bliss.

Rig Veda 10.90.37:

यदा भासा ते जगदन्धकारं निर्विशन्ति विश्वस्य शाखिनः ।

अहं ते सूर्य इवाजनीयमानो भूर्यामि विश्वमिदं तपन्तम् ॥

When your rays enter this world of darkness, they fill it with beauty.

I am like the sun that has risen before you, and I fill this world with heat.

This verse from the Rig Veda is part of the famous Purusha Sukta, which describes the Cosmic vision of Purusha, or the Supreme Person. The verse praises Purusha's rays, which dispel the darkness of ignorance and create the diversity of creation. The verse also compares Purusha to the sun, which is His representative in this world and which sustains life by its heat.
