My inspiration behind Toji and his relationship with his wife is Up, Silent Hill 2 and the Way of the House Husband.

With her health problems, Yume knew that she wasn't going to live for very long. And so truth be told, getting to fall in love with someone like Toji, and even getting to start a family together with him was honestly... not what she had expected. And so, when that time was close at hand, Yume would not just ask for him to take care of their son-- but of course, also tell him just how grateful she was to have met him.
There was very little strength in her left, as she utters those words to him. As she was no longer to hold back her own tears, even as she smiled weakly up at him. As she would shakily manage to cup his face between her palms for the very last time, so would she quietly remind him just how much she loved him, and how happy he had made her.

So I mentioned in a previous post that Yume's family owns a ramen restaurant. And guess what their special is? It is BLACK PORK TONKOTSU RAMEN (With a good helping of BLACK GARLIC dashed a top it all), sure to get folks to come back for more! And of course, what Yume served to Toji, on the very day they first meet.

Fushiguro Yume was a hardworking daughter, who worked alongside her family in their family ramen store. It wasn't surprising that they had plans to have her inherit that entire place for herself, once it was time for her parents to retire.
And it was at this very store where she would meet Toji. Almost everyone was afraid to approach this big, intimidating looking guy with a scar over his lip, but not Yume. And so, with a big bowl of their SPECIAL OF THE DAY held between her delicate hands, Yume would place it right down in front of him, with a warm grin on her lips. Telling him to eat up, because he's not himself, when he's hungry~

But okay, continuing from that post, I can just imagine the number of times Toji would eventually just pick her up into his arms, the moment he notices that she's more tired than usual that day. Even when she tells him it's alright, he's like. 🙄 This results in many, MANY TIMES of him carrying her around like a princess, until she just leans against him and just enjoys it~

Yume wasn't exactly the healthiest person, and there were a number of times where her health tended to get in her way when it came to a lot of things that she wanted to do in life.
But truth be told, that would be the very thing that would further FUEL HER DESIRE TO LIVE. For her to appreciate life more, whenever she had the opportunity to do so. Whenever she had the chance to walk, to run-- she was sure as hell going to take it!
And so, so her physical frailty would not at all deter her from being the cheerful, energetic, headstrong and optimistic woman that most people will remember her as for the years to come.

We all know that she was known and would be remembered for her KINDNESS, that it was her that would pull Toji out from that deep, dark pit to which he had been so cruelly thrown into. From a place that even he thought he would never be able to escape. She was the one that brought Toji a SENSE OF PEACE that he had never felt before. A sense of STABILITY in a soul thought broken, and HAPPINESS... that he never thought he would ever find, even after leaving his clan.
Yume Fushiguro was just a normal woman.
And honestly, NORMALCY was all Toji probably needed, after everything he'd been through. She lived a fairly simple life, running the ramen store alongside her family. But it was obvious the ZEST FOR LIFE that she had, in whatever in was that she did. From the way she would handle and speak with customers, to how she would choose to spend her days off. Yume was just a warm, welcoming presence, that easily drew many people in.
She was also known to be rather playful too, and took a most things in stride. And so, her approach towards the rather frightening figure of Toji Zenin might have been quite unexpected-- especially in his eyes. Especially as some wiser souls might have just avoided his line of sight, the moment they noticed him. But not her. Nope! This woman would waltz right up to his table with the store's signature special, and address the "Gloomy Gus", with that same welcoming grin on her lips... She would treat him no differently to her other customers who have had a bad day. And that's... where it all began...

There would be no happy ending for someone like Toji, not even in the afterlife. The only brief moment of happiness and peace that he ever had long since taken away from him. All those years back, when he had lost her-- and when he had begun to further descend from then on with the choices that he would make during those last few remaining years of his life.
And so, he wasn't all that surprised-- when he wouldn't even get to reunite with her in the afterlife, simply stuck in purgatory for those many years to come.
With only memories of her ever so often keeping him steadfast... This would also be the case, the moment his soul (Or at least, some essence of it) was pulled back into the world of the living. That even when he was meant to be nothing more than a mindless, killing machine by this point-- her influence over him would eventually still pull him briefly out of that darkness and recognize this young sorcerer before him... whom thankfully still went by the name of Fushiguro himself.
