You swear that you're stayin' single, next thing you know

You meet a girl at a bar and next thing you know

You get her laughin', it's 2 AM

“You can’t be serious,” Adam laughs, “you, give up dating. No chance.”

Luca looks offended, “I swear I am. It’s too complicated, too time-consuming.”

In the dim-lit bar, the brothers stare at each other, Adam unbelieving of Luca’s declaration. In the midst of their staring contest, they don’t see their friends walk over to them until Mark slaps Adam on the shoulder. 

“Hey bud, got an extra seat for us?” Tyler asks.

“Sure thing, good to see you guys again.” Adam says. This is the last free day he has before training camp so he made a pit stop in Michigan to see Luca one more time before the season starts. “Luca was just tellin’ me that he’s done dating.”

Mark scoffs, “I’d pay good money to see him last more than a month.”

“Dude.” Luca deadpans, “I’m done for the season. Focusing on hockey.”

“Seriously? ‘Focusing on hockey’? Dude, you’re not in some romance novel about to be suspended from the team because you were late to practice one too many times. What’s your deal, really?” Ethan asks, setting off giggles from the whole table. Mark has a shit-eating grin on his face and steals Luca’s beer, lifting it to his lips. 

Luca sighs, “I’m just getting tired of hook-ups. Two years in and I want to shake things up a little, get a taste of the bachelor life.” 

This seems to appease the jury as Ethan and Mark relax back into their seats with a thoughtful look on their faces. Gavin and Adam have been engrossed in a discussion about the new players Columbus added over the summer and how they’ll fit into the team and KJ sticking around with his new contract. They catch each other up on their summers, shooting the shit and stealing beers back and forth. Mark and Ethan spend at least five minutes ribbing Luca for his decision to give up dating. Rolling his eyes, Luca heads to the bar to get another round. 

“I’ll take five, please.” He asks the bartender and receives a nod of acknowledgement. Drumming his fingers on the bartop, he sighs and studies the counter intently. A voice comes from his left. 

“What’s so fascinating there?”

Luca’s head snaps up. “Huh, oh sorry. Nothing, just uh, zoned out for a second.”

He studies her for a moment, and she’s a vision. Loosely curled red hair and green eyes, freckles on her nose and playful smirk on her face.

“Happens to the best of us. I’m Maddie.”

Luca is tongue tied, not something he ever finds himself around women. “Uh yeah, all the time. I-I’m Luca.”

They stay staring at each other until Maddie laughs and says, “Sit.”, so Luca sits on the barstool next to her. It’s easy to fall into conversation with her, everything comes so naturally. There’s no doubt that the boys are going to give Luca shit for this, since not even fifteen minutes ago he swore off dating for the season. He must have been talking to Maddie for longer than he thought because at some point Adam comes over and grabs the beers still sitting at Luca’s elbow. 

“-and so, we flew his underwear up the flagpole outside the house.”

Maddie cackles and Luca joins her, both laughing until they can’t breathe. At some point their drinks are emptied, but they forget to order more. Leaning on the counter, Maddie asks, “What are your big plans after university? Do you want to go pro?”

“Every kid dreams of playing pro, but I’ve made peace with it if I never get there. I can just live vicariously through Adam,” he says, “but I really haven’t thought too hard about it lately. But with my major being Sports Management there’s a lot of hockey-related avenues I can take. What are you taking”

Maddie hums thoughtfully, “Yeah, that makes sense. I’m doing a Bachelor of Psychology and am going to get my Master’s after.”

“Wow, impressive. What made you decide on Psychology?”

“A combination of things really. Undiagnosed ADHD in middle and high school and not having super present parents to talk about things with kind of sent my mental health down the shitter, and how brains work has always fascinated me. Memories, fact retention, all of it, and how the brain is affected by mental health struggles.” She cuts off abruptly, used to having people tell her she talks too much.

But Luca is sitting there, a soft look on his face, just soaking up everything she says. “That’s incredible.”

Maddie flushes, but keeps eye contact. Their conversation continues until Adam walks over, breaking them out of their little bubble.

“It’s almost two, we’re heading out.” Adam tells Luca.

“Oh man, we definitely lost track of time. I’ll meet you at the car.” turning to Maddie he says, “I had a great time tonight. I’d like to give you my number, if you want it.”

Maddie dips her chin, silently saying yes. Luca grabs a napkin and scribbles his number down with the Sharpie that Maddie hands him before writing her own down for Luca to take. Carefully, he tucks the napkin away in his pocket while hers goes into her purse, along with the Sharpie. She takes it with a grin, and walks out of the bar with Luca. They stand for a minute before thumbing over their shoulders in the direction of their vehicles. Luca walks to Adam’s car with a dopey grin on his face, completely unfazed at the teasing that he’s about to endure for months on end. He just had the best night of his life in a long time, and got her number to boot. Breathing in the cool night air, he feels like this is right, how things were supposed to be. And now he can’t fuck this up or he’ll really never hear the end of it.

When he is back in the car, he braces for the jokes. It’s dead silent for a beat before Luca turns and looks at Mark and says, “Just shut up.”

Mark holds his hands up in surrender, “Ok man, I’ll let you have this one.”

The ride home is quiet, Ethan is snoring in the front and the radio is playing the Top 40 quiet in the background. Luca takes a full breath, feeling lighter than he has in the past months. Staring out at the streetlights, he can finally see some sort of future for him, whether it’s with Maddie or not. But he really hopes it's with Maddie.
