     It makes Corsiva think of the surface.

     The last time she was there was so long ago. How long -- hundreds of years, maybe? Ever since monsters were sealed underground, well... time has kind of blurred together. The only thing she has to measure time by are her sons’ ages; even that’s not exactly reliable, because she can’t remember how much time there is between being forced into the Underground and their births.

     When they were on the surface, so long ago, the culture was... different. Although monsters weren’t completely shunned, they weren’t welcome everywhere. Humans were superstitious. There was ONE small cafe she and Gaster would visit sometimes, the one place in the area that was happy to allow monsters through the doors. Every time, they would sit there on dates and talk and hold hands and just be content to be with each other.

     God. Things were so different back then.

     He always ordered the same drink, and it’s something she can’t imagine him ever drinking nowadays. It’s too sweet, she remembers, thanks to her stolen sips from his cup. He’s not sweet anymore, either. Bitter and dark, just like the coffee she makes for him every day.

     Her memories of the scent are pleasant, though. It makes her think of a time when things were... better.

     The bones of her face shift into a smile.

     ( Gaster always was more like their youngest son than he’d like to admit, anyway. )

     It’s probably unavoidable for Juugo to love nature. That’s the one thing his family has always been completely in tune with.

     He can’t really remember how old he was the last time he smelled grass that had been freshly cut, but he’s sure it must have been when he was very young -- still with his parents. A few memories run through his mind, all of them good ones.

     Lying in a patch of grass that his mother had just trimmed down, feeling the newly clipped ends scratch along all his bare skin. He’s pretty sure that at least once he rolled over onto his stomach and just laid there with his face in it for a while.

     When he was even a little younger than that, the little redhead would often march behind his mother as she cut the grass. Sometimes she would let him try it himself; he gets the feeling that his smile when he was able to do that always made her so happy.

     There was one time, right before he lost his parents... he wanted to sleep outside for the night so he could see the stars. It was his father who insisted they all do it together, and they did. That was one of the best nights of his life, nestled between his mother and his father, surrounded by the aroma of the grass they had just cut that morning, staring sleepy-eyed up at the stars until he drifted off into a dream.

          ❝  Oh, a goal... ah... I’m not really sure ?  The only thing I real-              ly want is to... live in peace, and be useful to other people,              and be... normal.  To have friends and not have to fight any-              more.  That’s probably not really a GOAL, is it . . . ? ... If I              had to pick something solid, just one thing, I’d probably say...              finding a way to make sure I don’t... hurt people anymore.              To make sure I’m rid of these violent urges.  That’s... that’s              all I really want for the future.  That’s what’s important to me.  ❞

Aside from them, nobody has shown him... anything like this. He’s gotten kindness from Sasuke and Kimimaro -- and maybe even Orochimaru once or twice -- but romantic affection like this ? ? Not from anyone.

     ... Ah. He doesn’t know what to do.

     So instead of saying anything, he just stands there, shocked and still as possible, while his face turns a shade redder than his hair.
