진이 ‘슈퍼 참치’로 전 세계에 벌인 잔치

진에게 ‘슈퍼 참치’ 제작기를 듣다

“저희 세대에는 고속도로에서 들을 만한 낚시 송이 없잖아요. 특히나 요즘은 무거운 얘기만 주로 오가는 분위기다 보니 좀 가볍고 신나는 느낌으로 노래를 만들어보면 어떨까 생각했어요.”

방탄소년단 진이 ‘슈퍼 참치’를 만들어봐야겠다고 생각한 건 단순한 이유에서였다. 과거 ‘인더숲 BTS편(In the SOOP BTS ver.)’에서 ‘낚시 송’을 만들고 싶다 언급했던 그는 낚시를 통해 느끼는 즐거움을 담은 노래를 아예 낚시를 하면서 만들고자 했다. “낚시 송을 만들고 싶기도 했지만, 사실 범주 형과 낚시를 하러 가고 싶은 핑계이기도 했어요. 회사에 형이랑 낚시하면서 좋은 콘텐츠가 나올 수 있을 것 같다는 의견을 내서 가게 됐죠.” 그렇게 진은 그의 낚시 메이트가 된 프로듀서 범주와 대략적인 구상을 미리 해놓은 상태로 낚시터를 찾았고, 실제 낚시를 하던 중에 떠오르는 아이디어를 주고받으며 ‘슈퍼 참치’의 구체적인 윤곽을 잡아갔다. 그 과정에서 단 5분 만에 멜로디를 결정하기도 했다. 범주가 “태어나고 바다 위에 떠 있는 배에서 물고기를 잡으며 곡 작업을 한 건 처음이었어요.”라고 할 만큼 독특한 작업 방식이었다.

이러한 작업 방식은 ‘슈퍼 참치’가 두 사람이 함께 공유하는 즐거움에서 비롯됐기에 가능했다. “‘슈퍼 참치’라는 제목을 점찍어 놓은 상태였는데 저희가 도착한 바다에는 참치가 잡히지 않는다는 사실을 뒤늦게 알았어요.”라며 낚시 당시의 예상치 못한 상황에 대해 설명하던 범주는 곧이어 “걱정 가득한 상태로 낚시를 하다 큰 대구와 함께 여러 물고기를 잡다 보니 ‘어떤 물고기든 어떠하리.’라는 마음을 가지게 됐죠.”라고 말했다. 이 유쾌한 마음 덕분인지, 작은 기적도 일어났다. “제가 농담 삼아 ‘석진아, 너는 우주 대스타니까 참치를 잡을 수도 있어.’라고 하니까 석진이가 웃으면서 낚싯대를 던졌는데 실제로 참치가 잡힌 거예요. 낚시 프로님을 포함해 현장에 있던 모든 사람이 놀랐고, 이후에 ‘참치도 잡혔으니까 상어도 만나는 거 아니야?’라고 했는데 글쎄 아기 상어가 와서 주위를 돌다 가는 게 아닙니까. 너무나 소름이 돋았고, 그 순간 석진이한테서 후광이 보이는 것 같았습니다. 하하.”

진은 방탄소년단의 공연이 마무리될 즈음마다 팬들의 웃음을 자아내는 각양각색의 이벤트를 하곤 한다. 때로는 머리카락을 사과 모양으로 묶거나, 커다란 리본을 꽂는 등 매번 색다른 모습으로 아미들을 즐겁게 하는 진의 이벤트는 어느덧 방탄소년단 공연의 시그니처 중 하나가 됐다. 이처럼 ‘슈퍼 참치’는 스타디움에서 공연을 하고, 아메리칸 뮤직 어워드에서 대상 격인 ‘올해의 아티스트(Artist of the year)’를 수상하는 ‘우주 대스타’이면서도 참치를 잡으며 노래를 만드는 독특한 방식으로 행복을 표현할 줄 아는 진의 성격이 고스란히 반영돼 있다. 그리고 진은 자신의 그 감정을 소중한 사람들과 함께 공유하기를 원했다. “이 노래를 들으면서 아미들이 저를 보고 마음껏 웃으며 즐기고 놀았으면 좋겠다고 생각을 했는데, 결과적으로 ‘아미들이 좋아하니까 됐다.’는 마음이에요. 좋아하고 즐기시는 모습을 보면서 저도 재밌었죠. 만족했어요.” 진은 트로트 스타일을 활용한 ‘슈퍼 참치’의 유쾌함에 걸맞은 활기찬 분위기를 곡에 담기 위해 녹음 현장에 참치회와 복분자주를 준비하기도, 녹음 당일 초면에 어색해하는 스태프들을 통솔하며 힘찬 ‘떼창’ 녹음을 이끌어내기도 했다. “이런 녹음 광경은 처음 경험했어요.” 범주는 “코러스 녹음할 때 석진이가 스태프들의 에너지를 끌어올리기 위해 디렉팅하는 모습을 보면서 정말 많이 웃었어요. 열정 가득한 지휘를 하다 마지막엔 ‘여러분! 이번 테이크 잘 나오면 바로 퇴근하실 수 있습니다!’라고 하니까 스태프분들의 목소리가 굉장히 우렁차고 음정도 정확해지더라고요.”라는 비하인드를 전하며 무척이나 재밌는 시간이었다는 소감을 밝혔다. 두 사람이 함께 작업하며 가장 많이 했다는 말은 “즐겁게 하자.”, “행복하자.”였고, ‘슈퍼 참치’의 안무 영상은 곡의 흥겨움에 빠져든 스태프들의 제안을 통해 만들어졌다. 방우정 하이브쓰리식스티 크레이티브 스튜디오 SP는 “원래는 브이라이브 방송에서 가볍게 안무를 추며 ‘슈퍼 참치’를 공개하는 정도로 계획했지만 그냥 흘러가듯 추고 잊히기엔 아까울 것 같아 진 씨에게 안무 영상 촬영에 대한 의견을 물어봤고, 흔쾌히 수락하셔서 영상 촬영을 진행”할 수 있었다고 말했다. “스태프분들이 더 재밌어 하시더라고요. 브이라이브 방송에 꾸밀 인어 공주 풍선까지 구해오기도 하면서 너무 신나게 이것저것 제안하시는데 제가 어떻게 거절할 수 있겠어요. 사실 그게 일할 때 가장 중요한 점이라고 생각해요. 재밌고, 신나는 환경이어야 된다는 것.” 진의 말처럼, ‘슈퍼 참치’에는 방탄소년단으로 살아가면서도 일상의 즐거움을 소중히 하는 그의 삶의 방식이 곳곳에 스며들어 있다.

Jin throws a worldwide feast with “Super Tuna”

The BTS member gives a peek into the production behind the song

“Our generation doesn’t have any good songs about fishing to listen to on their way on the highway. And there’s a lot of serious talk going on lately, so I thought it would be nice to make a song that’s kind of light and upbeat.”

The reason why BTS member Jin thought he should make “Super Tuna” was simple: He once mentioned on In the SOOP that he wanted to making a fishing song. This time, he said that, if he was going to write a song that captures the joys of fishing, then he had to do it while fishing. “I did actually want to make a fishing song, but it was really an excuse to go fishing with BUMZU. We went after I suggested to the label that the two of us fishing would make for good content.” And so Jin, with his producer-turned-fishing-buddy BUMZU, visited a fishing spot with a rough sketch for the song in hand and trading ideas as they came, fleshing out specifics for “Super Tuna,” all the while fishing for real. That process led them to the final melody in just five minutes. For his part, BUMZU found the approach unique, saying, “It was the first time in my life I worked on a song while fishing on a boat out at sea.”

The unusual approach worked because the two were filled with excitement and happiness as they pieced together the song. “I already had my mind set on ‘Super Tuna’ for the title but I didn’t find out till later that there was no tuna where we went,” BUMZU explained of a mishap, and “I was filled with worry while we were fishing, but then we caught a bunch of different fish, including big cod, and ended up feeling any kind of fish would do.” Perhaps it was thanks to this easygoing atmosphere that a small miracle occurred. “I jokingly said, ‘Seokjin, you’re a universal superstar—you’d be able to catch a tuna anyway,’ and he laughed and cast his line, and then he caught one for real. Everyone there, including the professional fisher, was shocked, and after that I said, ‘I mean, we caught a tuna—what if we see a shark next?’ And then, voila, a baby shark came and swam around the boat a bit. It gave me goosebumps. I think I saw a halo of light around Seokjin. Haha.”

Jin holds a different event at the end of every one of BTS’s performances that leaves their fans in stitches. His events take on a different form each time, whether that means tying his hair up in the shape of an apple or with a gigantic ribbon, and have already become one of the signatures of the group’s concerts. To that end, “Super Tuna” is a perfect encapsulation of Jin’s personality: Though a “universal superstar”—performing to stadiums, winning Artist of the Year at the American Music Awards—he also finds his own way of finding happiness from making a song while out fishing for tuna. And it’s a sentiment that Jin wanted to share with the people who matter most to him. “I wanted ARMY to listen to the song and have fun laughing as they watched me, and in the end I’m just happy they like it,” he said. “I had fun just watching them enjoy the song and knowing they like it. That was enough for me.” “Super Tuna” is a playful song that falls under the trot genre, and Jin put out tuna hwe and bokbunja ju at the recording to instill a lively atmosphere in the song. He also encouraged the staff, who felt awkward meeting for the first time, to join in the energetic group singalong. “I never had a recording experience like that before,” BUMZU said, painting a picture of the fun they had behind the scenes. “I was laughing so much, watching Seokjin directing the staff to sing with more energy in the chorus. He directed them really passionately, then at the end said, ‘Okay, everyone! If we nail this take, we can all go home!’ And all the staff members belted it out, and in key, too.” What the two of them said more than anything while working together was “let’s have fun and keep things light,” and the dance video for “Super Tuna” came about through suggestions from the staff as they fell for the song’s charm. According to Bang Woo-jung, Senior Professional of HYBE 360’s Creative Studio, “We originally planned to show off a simple dance to ‘Super Tuna’ on VLIVE, but it would’ve been a shame if he just danced to it once and then it was forgotten, so we asked Jin how he’d feel recording a dance video for it and he eagerly took us up on that and filmed it.” Jin pointed out how “the staff were having even more fun with it. They were so excited, suggesting this and that and even bringing in a Little Mermaid balloon as decoration for the V LIVE stream, so how could I say no? I actually think that’s the most important thing when working: keeping the atmosphere fun and exciting.” The artist’s approach of savoring every moment of his daily life while also living the life of a BTS member permeates through “Super Tuna.”

After the group wrapped up their BTS PERMISSION TO DANCE ON STAGE – LA concert, Jin appeared on his birthday V LIVE last December 4 and “Super Tuna” was shown for the first time, where it was meant as one of his fun events and as a kind of gift. He went into details about the production process behind the song at length, apparently feeling shy, but fans were entirely won over by the unexpected song and “Super Tuna” was an immediate sensation. The song was the top trending song on YouTube globally for 16 consecutive weeks and charted on the Billboard Hot Trending Songs chart for 11 straight weeks despite not receiving a fully “official” release, while parodies and dance challenges of the choreography went viral on social media and video sharing platforms worldwide. By February 26, videos with the #supertuna hashtag exceeded 320 million on key short-form video service TikTok, and major news and other media in Korea and abroad were reporting on the popularity of “Super Tuna” and the phenomenon of its associated fun challenges.

“I couldn’t believe it at all,” Jin said. “I just expected the fans who like fun stuff to just sort of enjoy it and say, Okay, nice song. But I was seriously taken aback and surprised when I saw how the song was doing way better than I ever could’ve expected.” The day after the release of “Super Tuna,” Jin even made an appeal to fans on Weverse to stop with the challenges. “Honestly, I felt a little awkward. It’s really rough compared to the kind of high-quality music I’m used to putting out with BTS, so I wanted ARMY to be the only ones who knew about it. It seemed to me that ARMY thought, I can’t keep this weird thing to myself, and they were having fun spreading it around. So I gave up. (laughs) I saw ARMY say, ‘We have permission to dance.’ So I said, ‘Yeah, you’re right—you do,’ and came to accept it.”

As Jin explained on Weverse, “Super Tuna” was “made to be simply enjoyed,” but making a song that’s just for fun isn’t always a simple process and “it took a lot of effort.” According to BUMZU, although the song didn’t require anything overly technical, making a trot song with comically B-grade sensibilities required an entirely new approach through trial and error. “It was important to have a hybrid of different feelings,” he said. “In terms of the sound, we made it by looking to the feeling of “ParaPara Queen” by So Yoo-jin, then added details specific to ‘Super Tuna’ by continuously trading ideas with Seokjin. So I guess you could say ‘Super Tuna’ falls under the alternative EDM trot genre.” To get into a style that was such a departure for him, Jin approached the song with a different vocal style than usual. “When I sang the ‘palttak palttak’ part, for example,” Jin said, “I would’ve sung a short ‘palttak’ if I were singing for BTS, but in ‘Super Tuna’ I sang it like, ‘pa-alttak,’ to highlight that rustic feel. I must’ve sung that part at least 50 times.” You can feel how he was not only aiming to have fun while making the song but also exhibited the professionalism expected from the members of BTS.

The choreography, now famous for having inspired a number of popular challenges online, involved a similar creative process. Son Sung Deuk, the performance director for the song, said Jin asked for “a fun dance that was simple enough that anyone could dance along to it,” but that he had to go through several iterations of the dance before his own idea of simplicity lined up with Jin’s. “The choreography seemed plenty easy to me, but he said it had to be even easier. Per Seokjin’s feedback, I took out more and more, to the point I wondered if it was okay to remove so much.” Though the whole idea of “Super Tuna” was dreamed up on an impulse and its production was like a fun day at the beach, the choreography had to be looked over with a fine-tooth comb with the express requirement of simplicity kept in mind at all times in order to come across as intuitive. Son said the final version of the choreography benefitted from all that work. “Moves that look easy to a professional can feel difficult for the layman, but I think keeping the moves truly easy made ‘Super Tuna’ more approachable so more people could join in on the fun.”

“Super Tuna” actually first became popular shortly after its release thanks to ARMY making their own challenges and parodies, but it took on a whole different kind of challenge with young children after that. Videos of groups of kids, their eyes mesmerizingly fixed on the “Super Tuna” video as they sing and dance along with Jin, started to make the rounds through different online communities and through social media, while well-known characters, including the “big three” children’s characters in Korea—Pinkfong, Pororo and Cocomong—picked up on the trend and did their own versions of the dance cover challenge, unintentionally positioning “Super Tuna” as a kids’ pop song. On top of trending with the generations and groups most familiar with video sharing, we saw workers in related industries at places like frozen tuna processing plants and deep-sea fisheries, and even people from government agencies like the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and mascot characters for municipal governments, all join in on the “Super Tuna” craze Jin sparked, savoring their daily lives just as Jin had originally envisioned. That’s the kind of tuna feast we can have when someone with the weight of BTS behind them sets out to bring happiness to the people.

“I barely even had the choreography memorized” for “Super Tuna,” which was paramount to the spread of the challenge, Jin said, “and was busy thinking about the theme park I was going to go to after the shoot, so I’m flummoxed people are into it this much.” But one member of staff who was present pointed out Jin’s earnestness, describing how “he practices choreography whenever he’s got time, even when he’s busy with concerts. After filming, he checked little details like the graphics in the video carefully and offered feedback.” Son added that Jin is the sort who “knows exactly what it is he has to do and quietly gets down to work, no matter the situation or his role,” and the song captures that pristine attitude Jin takes toward life. It also taught Jin a small lesson: “There’s a lot of things I’m supposed to worry about when I’m working, like how well the work will be received, so even if I was doing something I’m supposed to enjoy, it became work,” Jin said. “But ‘Super Tuna’ taught me that, if I try to make that kind of work fun and exciting, I can feel differently about it.” On his previous birthday, Jin released “Abyss,” a track that touched on his innermost feelings. Both it and “Super Tuna” are the artist’s expressions of his everyday feelings and have Jin written all over them. And he opened up about those feelings and experiences in ways he knew fans would be most readily receptive to. BUMZU, who worked on both tracks, said Jin “has an overwhelming desire to share his inner self through music and I could tell his whole body’s filled with thoughts of his fans. I remember how the last thing he talked about at the end of each stage of work on the song was his fans.” This is a man with enormous influence who still appears humble as he shares about his moments of happiness and sadness with his fans. Many people, not just fans, have found means of injecting a little energy into their own lives thanks to Jin sharing his emotions through song. Only Jin could pull this off—the same BTS megastar who followed through on the plan he made while fishing to actually make a song about fishing. ‘BTS 퍼미션 투 댄스 온 스테이지 - LA’ 기자 간담회

“아미가 있어서 오랫동안 함께할 수 있다”

11월 28일 오후 2시(EST), 미국 LA 소파이 스타디움에서 'BTS 퍼미션 투 댄스 온 스테이지 LA(PERMISSION TO DANCE ON STAGE-LA)’ 기자 간담회가 열렸다. 2회 차 공연을 앞둔 이날 방탄소년단 RM은 “지난 2년 동안 팬데믹은 우리 모두에게 매우 어려운 시간이었다. 그렇지만 이번 콘서트를 통해서 방탄소년단이 2년 동안 어떻게 성장했는지 보여드리고자 한다.”라고 말했다. 그의 말처럼 이번 공연은 방탄소년단이 그들의 팬을 2년 만에 직접 대면하는 자리일 뿐만 아니라 ‘Dynamite’, ‘Butter’, ‘Permission to Dance’로 팬데믹 시기를 헤쳐나가는 사람들에게 위안과 희망을 노래해온 방탄소년단이 그들의 음악이 전해온 메시지를 아미들과 함께 재확인하는 자리이기도 했다. 방탄소년단이 이번 공연을 통해 그들의 음악과 아미에 대해 그리고 아직 희망이 필요한 이 시대에 전하는 말들을 정리했다.

콘서트에 임하는 소감 및 인사말

뷔: 2년 만에 이렇게 대면 콘서트를 할 수 있어서 정말 기분이 좋다. 우리에게 이때까지의 2년은 당연한 삶들이 당연하지 않게 되어서 무척 슬프고 많이 힘든 시기였지만, 오늘 열리는 콘서트 덕분에 기대가 많고 준비도 많이 하고 왔다. 그래서 정말 설렘을 가득 안고 왔다. 아미분들 그리고 기자님들에게 행복한 에너지를 주고 가고 싶다.

슈가: 팬데믹 이후로 거의 한 2년 만에 대면 콘서트를 하게 됐다. 굉장히 설렜고, 어제 공연을 하면서 ‘아, 이게 꿈은 아닐까?’라는 생각이 들었고 긴장도 많이 됐다. 8년 전 데뷔, 4년 전 미국 데뷔를 하게 된 시점부터 항상 이런 일들이 있었다. 2년 동안 공연을 하지 못하는 기간 동안 생각해보니 어느 하나 쉽게 이루어진 게 없었다. 우리는 항상 그런 장벽들을 우리 노력으로 이겨내왔고, 이번 공연도 마찬가지다. 공연을 하면서, 어떤 장벽이 있더라도 우리 노력으로 두려워하지 않고 계속 부딪칠 수 있는 게 방탄소년단의 장점이라는 생각이 들었다. 그래서 앞으로도 이런 장벽들에 대해서 계속 도전하고 이겨낼 거라고 말씀을 드리고 싶다.

진: 런던 웸블리 스타디움 공연 이후로 우리가 해외에서 기자 회견을 하는 건 또 처음이라 너무 떨리고 설렌다. 먼 곳까지 와주신 그리고 항상 우리를 찾아와주시는 기자님들 정말 감사드린다. 이 콘서트를 계기로 우��는 아미 여러분들과 더 많은 콘서트를 하게 됐으면 하는 바람이 있다. 또 이 콘서트 이후로 한국에서 콘서트를 개최하고 싶고, 예정도 있으니 앞으로도 많은 관심과 기대 부탁드린다.

정국: 오늘 이렇게 함께 뜻깊은 시간을 함께해주셔서 먼저 감사드린다. 작년에 이어서 올해도 우리가 굉장히 많은 사랑을 받았다. 팬데믹 이후 저희의 솔직한 심정을 담은 곡들, 이 순간을 다 함께 이겨내고자 하는 희망과 위로가 담긴 곡들을 발매했었는데 많은 분들이 사랑해주시고 응원해주셔서 오히려 우리가 더 큰 힘을 얻었다. 그만큼 받은 에너지를 오늘 있을 공연에 쏟아부어 보겠다.

RM: 어제 콘서트장에 팬들이 가득찬 모습을 보니 굉장히 감동적이었고, 마침내 기자님들을 직접 볼 수 있는 것도 감동적이고 기분 좋은 일이다. 특히 최근 우리가 AMA ‘올해의 아티스트’를 수상했고, 그래미 어워드 노미네이션도 그렇고 우리에게는 굉장히 아티스트로서 의미가 큰 일들이 있었다. 사실 우리가 한국에서 시작한 아티스트로서 우리가 가진 정체성에서 오는 한계, 예를 들면 장르라든가 보이지 않는 벽이 아직도 존재하는 것 같다. 하지만 우리는 항상 진심을 다해서 우리가 잘하는 것들을 음악과 퍼포먼스로 보여드렸다. 이런 작은 순간들이 모여서 오늘의 기적으로 이루어진 것 같다. 방탄소년단이 2년 만에 투어를 다시 시작하고 대면 콘서트를 하는데 이것이 새로운 챕터의 시작이라는 걸 새삼스럽게 느끼게 된다. 지난 2년 동안 팬데믹은 우리 모두에게 매우 어려운 시간이었다. 그렇지만 이번 콘서트를 통해서 방탄소년단이 2년 동안 어떻게 성장했는지 보여드리고자 한다. 이 자리에 함께해주셔서 감사드린다.

지민: 2년 만에 이렇게 오프라인 콘서트를 하게 되는데 이렇게 많은 기자님들이 와주셔서 정말 감사드린다. 그동안 팬분들을 직접 못 만나면서 굉장히 무기력하고 우울한 시간들을 보냈다. 그래도 ‘Dynamite’, 'Butter’, ‘Permission to Dance’를 연달아 발표하면서 우리가 할 수 있는 것들을 하기 위한 여러 가지 시도들을 많이 했다. 특히 이 시기를 함께하는 많은 분들을 위로하기 위해, 또 우리가 같이 위로받기 위해 노력을 많이 했다. 오랜만에 이렇게 팬들이 있는 무대를 쳐다보니 우리가 있어야 할 자리로 다시 돌아온 기분이 든다. 많은 분들이 빨리 자신의 자리로 돌아가서 새로운 시작을 할 수 있는 시간이 빨리 왔으면 좋겠다.

제이홉: UN 총회 참석 이후 이번 콘서트로 또 미국에 오게 됐는데, 이렇게 직접 기자님들을 만나게 되니 새삼 미국에 온 걸 실감하게 된다. 사실 방탄소년단이 한 세대의 목소리가 되어서 대변을 한다는 게 조금은 낯간지럽기는 하지만 그래도 여기에는 막중한 책임감이 따른다고 생각한다. 우리는 그저 좋아하는 음악을 하고, 그것을 공유할 수 있어서 영광이었는데 생각해보면 그것 또한 방탄소년단의 음악이 가진 힘이자 에너지가 아닌가 싶다. 이번 콘서트도 여지없이 그런 음악의 힘과 에너지를 보여드리고자 정말 많은 노력과 연습을 했다. 재밌게 즐기다 가셨으면 좋겠고, 또 오랜만의 오프라인 콘서트라 미국 팬분들뿐만 아니라 한국의 팬 여러분들도 많이 찾아오셨다고 들었다. 팬데믹 상황 속에서 지쳤던 감정과 힘들었던 감정, 우울한 감정을 싹 잊어버리고 재밌게, 행복하게 즐기다 가셨으면 좋겠다.

오랜만에 공연을 하는데 긴장이 되었는가? 그리고 오랜만에 퍼포먼스를 하는데 적응 기간이 좀 필요했는지, 아니면 바로 감각이 돌아오는지 궁금하다.

진: 우리가 공연을 한 지 2년 정도의 시간이 지났다. 공연을 앞두고 멤버들이 대기실에서 다같이 이야기를 하는 시간이 있는데, 어제 공연에서 우리끼리 가장 많이 했던 말은 오프닝 곡인 ‘ON’을 할 때 관객들을 보면 울 것 같다는 이야기였다. 오랜만에 팬들을 보는데 실수하지 않을까 하는 생각에 연습량도 굉장히 많았다. 2년 만에 관객들을 만나는 시간이라 멤버들도 정말 긴장을 많이 하고 또 준비를 많이 했다. 그런데 얘기는 그렇게 해도 실제로는 아무도 울지 않았다.(웃음)

제이홉: 아, 나는 좀 울 뻔했다.

뷔: 나는 코에서 눈물이 났다.(웃음)

울지 않았다고 했지만 2년 만의 첫 공연이 끝나고 나서 감정이 남달랐을 것 같다. 공연을 마친 후 느낀 첫 감정을 말해주면 좋겠다. 그리고 어제 공연이 끝난 후 멤버 몇 분이 팬들과 소통을 하신 걸로 아는데, 그 자리에서 뷔 씨가 재즈를 좋아한다는 이야기를 하면서 다른 장르의 음악을 해보자는 말씀을 하셨다. 혹시 앞으로도 지금까지 시도하지 않은 다양한 장르를 할 계획이 있는지, 그리고 올해가 가기 전에 앨범 발매나 싱글이나 믹스테이프 등의 계획이 있는지 설명 부탁드린다.

지민: 사실 어제 공연이 끝나고 정말 아쉬운 감정이 많았다. 왜냐하면 2년 동안 팬들을 만날 날만 계속해서 기다려왔는데, 2년이란 시간이 생각보다 길게 느껴지더라. 그래서 만났을 때 어떤 표정을 지어야 할지, 어떤 제스처를 취해야 할지, 어떤 표정으로 무슨 말을 해야 하고 얼마만큼 내 감정을 전달할 수 있을지에 대한 걱정이 많았다. 그래서 막상 팬들을 마주했을 때 즐기지 못했던 것 같아서 아쉬움이 남았다. 오늘은 좀 마음 편히 즐길 수 있도록 해볼 생각이다.

뷔: 아무래도 어릴 때부터 듣고 자란 음악들도 그렇고, 최근에 더욱 블루스나 재지한 것들을 많이 선호한다. 이런 부분들에 대해서 표현을 하고 싶다는 생각을 하게 되어서 작업을 해보고 있는데, 그런 부분에 대해 전문적인 사람이 아니라서 어렵다. 언젠가는 이런 음악도 보여드릴 수 있는 날이 왔으면 좋겠다.

제이홉: 장르에 대한 구분은 짓지 않고 계속해서 작업하려고 노력하고 있는 편이다. 그리고 그런 부분들을 믹스테이프에 접목시키려고 노력하고 있다. 사실 좋은 결과물이 나와야 무언가를 낼 수 있기 때문에, 열심히 작업은 하겠지만 올해 안에 나올 수 있을 거라는 확신이나 믿음은 잘 서지 않긴 한다.

모든 아미를 대신해서 다시 시작한 첫 콘서트 축하한다는 말씀을 드리고 싶다. 최근 아미 앞에서 처음으로 공연을 한 게 AMA에서 상을 수상할 때였는데, 현장에 많은 아미들이 있었다. 그때 무엇을 느꼈나. 그리고 어제 콘서트에서는 수만 명의 아미 앞에서 공연을 했는데 둘 사이에 차이점이 있는지, 느끼는 감정이 어떻게 달랐는지 궁금하다.

정국: 솔직히 AMA 시상식을 하기 전까지는 실감을 전혀 못하고 있었다. 우리가 항상 이야기하는 건, 그런 자리에 가면 아미 함성이 정말로 큰 힘이 많이 된다는 거다. 그리고 어제 있었던 콘서트에서도 많은 도움이 됐다. 콘서트에서나 시상식에서나 우리가 받아들이는 아미 함성의 가치는 정말 너무나도 크고 똑같다. 그 덕분에 우리도 정말 설렜고, 또 좋은 무대를 선보일 수 있지 않았나 하는 생각을 한다.

2017년에 첫 미국 빌보드 뮤직 어워드 트로피를 받고 나서 ‘Skit : 망설임과 두려움’을 발표했다. 당시 ‘어디를 더 어떻게 올라가야 되나’, ‘내려갈 땐 얼마나 내려가야 되나’ 불안하다고 말했는데 AMA 대상을 받은 현 시점에서 그런 망설임과 두려움 같은 감정은 여전한지, 혹은 사라졌는지 궁금하다. 또 4년째 끝없이 지속되고 있는 방탄소년단의 화양연화에 대해서 어떻게 생각하는지 함께 말씀 부탁드린다.

슈가: 사실 그때와 비교해서 두려움이나 망설임이 완전히 해소가 되었느냐라고 물어본다면 그렇지는 않다. 세상을 살아가는 사람으로서 두려움과 망설임은 언제나 공존하는 거라고 생각한다. 그때와 그나마 달라진 점은 즐기고 있다는 것이다. 코로나19를 겪고 나서 우리들이 입을 모아 이야기했던 것 중 하나가 ‘왜 그때 그걸 즐기지 못했을까?’였다. 그러니까 막상 이걸 즐길 수 없게 되는 상황이 되어버리니까 왜 그때 온전히 그걸 받아들이지 못하고, 두려워하고, 무서워하고, 즐기지 못했나에 대해서 고민을 좀 많이 했다. 그래서 이번에 특히나 AMA 대상 같은 경우에는 정말 진심으로 기뻤다. 2년 만에 대면으로 관객을 본 것도 너무 기뻤고, 플러스로 좋은 결과가 있어서 기뻤다. 그리고 그때와 마음가짐은 같지만 조금 더 즐길 수 있게 되어서 한편으로는 다행이라는 생각도 든다. 그리고 지금 몇 년째 지속되고 있는 ‘화양연화’라고 표현을 해주셨는데, 정말 감사하게 생각하고 있다. 미국에서 인터뷰를 하거나 매체들을 만날 때마다 항상 어떻게 그렇게 열정적인 팬덤과 함께 활동할 수 있느냐는 질문을 많이 받는다. 전부 다 팬 여러분들이, 아미 여러분들이 함께해주셔서 오랫동안 함께할 수 있다. 그리고 또 어제 공연하면서 느꼈다. ‘이분들의 몸짓과 이분들의 행동, 이 사람들의 목소리 덕분에 우리가 살고 있구나.’ 라는 생각을 다시 한 번 깨닫는 날이었다.

플로리다에도 아미들이 많고, 팬들이 메시지를 전하고 싶어 했다. 아시다시피 많은 아미들이 콘서트에 왔지만 오지 못한 아미들도 있기에 아쉽다는 메시지를 전달하고 싶어 했다. 이 특별한 4일간의 콘서트에 오지 못한 아미들을 위해 메시지를 전달해줄 수 있나?

정국: 우리도 아미들을 못 만나 너무 아쉽고, 더 많은 공연을 할 수 있는 날이 어서 왔으면 좋겠다. 2년 동안 단 한 번도 보지 못했던 만큼, 기회만 된다면 이곳저곳 찾아가서 많은 공연이나 퍼포먼스, 노래를 들려드리고 싶은데 상황이 상황인지라 그 순간이 너무 아쉽다. 그래도 우리를 보러 와주시는 분들을 위해서 열심히 공연을 할 것이고, 하루빨리 더 많은 아미들을 눈앞에서 볼 수 있는 순간이 왔으면 좋겠다. 우리도 그날을 정말 바라고 있고, 가수로서 제가 제일 원하는 것 중 하나다.

2020년도부터 미국에서는 아시안에 대한 증오, 아시안 헤이트 이슈가 계속 발생했다. 이 문제에 있어 방탄소년단의 긍정적인 영향력이 이 문제를 해결하는 데에 많은 도움이 됐다. 이런 긍정적인 역할 혹은 영향력에 대해서 답변해줄 수 있는지, 또 방탄소년단이 아시아인들과 아시아계 미국인들에게 긍정적인 영향을 미치고 있는 모습에 대해서 어떻게 생각하는지 의견을 듣고 싶다.

RM: 아시안 헤이트에 대해서 말할 때마다 굉장히 큰 책임감을 느낀다. 물론 외국에서 태어나거나 자라지는 않았지만, 우리가 지금까지 걸어온 길을 보면 외국에서 활동을 하면서 그런 장벽들을 느꼈다. 이런 장벽들은 말로 설명하기 힘들다. 명확하게 볼 수 있는 것들도 있고, 눈에 보이지 않는 것들도 있다. 그래서 우리가 아시안 헤이트에 대해서 이야기할 때는, 우리가 걸어가는 길들과 말들, 음악들 전부가 세계의 모든 아시아인들, 특히 해외에 사는 아시아인들에게 힘이 되고 도움이 될 수 있기를 바란다. 그래서 만약 우리가 도울 수 있는 부분이 있거나 위로가 될 수 있다면 항상 목소리를 내고 싶고, 또 차별과 인종차별을 멈추고 다양성에 일조하고 싶다. 이 질문을 해주셔서 감사하다.

LA가 방탄소년단의 방문으로 난리가 났다. 소파이 스타디움은 물론이고 호텔, 공항, 한인 식당가, 할리우드 스타의 거리까지 아미들이 줄 서 있다. 여러 곳에서 방탄소년단의 흔적이 보인다. 요 며칠 LA 방송에서도 방탄소년단에 대한 보도를 아침저녁으로 한다. 그만큼 방탄소년단의 위상이 몇 년 전 로즈볼 스타디움 공연으로 방문했을 때와 달라진 것 같은데 그런 반응들을 보면서 어떻게 느끼는가?

슈가: 사실 2019년에도 스타디움 투어를 지금보다 더 큰 규모로 했다. 코로나19 시대 이후에 우리가 할 수 있는 게 뭐가 있을지를 고민하면서 나왔던 노래들이 ‘Dynamite’, ‘Butter’, ‘Permission to Dance’였는데 정말 전 세계에서 많은 분들이 사랑해주셨다. 그래서 그때와 규모 자체가 많이 달라지진 않았지만 훨씬 더 격하게 반가워해주시는 것 같다. 그리고 우리가 2년 동안 공연을 못하기도 해서 그런 부분이 다른 것 같다. 한국에서 ‘Dynamite’, ‘Butter’, ‘Permission to Dance’를 계속 관객 없이 녹화만 하다 보니 ‘실제로 이런 반응들을 보면 어떨까?’라는 생각을 많이 했는데 체감상 생각보다 지금 훨씬 더 즐겁고 행복하다.

정국: 모든 사람마다 취미나 본인이 하고 있는 일, 사람들을 만나는 정말 사소한 것들도 못하게 됐다. 우리에게 제일 소중했던 게 투어인데 그걸 못하다 보니, 콘서트나 시상식 같은 것들이 많이 소중해졌다.

AMA 시상식에서 정국 씨의 수상 소감이 인상 깊었는데 마지막에 ‘I’m going to focus on’ 다음 무슨 말을 하려고 했는지 궁금하다.

정국: 많이 부끄럽지만 세 단어밖에 없었다. ‘enjoying every moment’.(웃음)

최근에 2년 연속으로 그래미 어워드 후보에 올랐다. 소감을 듣고 싶다.

슈가: 2년 연속 노미네이트된 것에 대해서 아직도 굉장히 얼떨떨하다. 어릴 때부터 그래미 어워드 무대와 시상식을 보면서 자라왔기 때문에 아직도 노미네이트된다는 게 한편으로는 설레기도 하고 기대도 되는데, 당연히 쉽지 않을 것이다. 노미네이트가 되는 것도 그렇고 수상이 될지 말지도 쉽지 않은데, 아까 저희가 말씀드렸다시피 뛰어넘을 장벽이 있다는 것 그리고 앞으로 ��전할 수 있다는 것에 대해 감사하게 생각하고 있다. 뛰어넘을 수 있으면 좋겠다.

진: 아직 우리가 못 받은 상이 그래미 상이다. 그렇다고 다른 상이 기쁘지 않다는 건 아니다. 그래도 아직 받지 못한 상이 그래미니, 한 번 받아봤으면 좋겠다는 마음을 가지고 있다.

슈가: 그런 말이 있다. 열 번 찍어 안 넘어가는 나무 없다고. 두 번 정도 찍어서 넘어가면 그것도 우리 욕심일 수 있다.

2017년에만 해도 지금의 성공이 믿어지지 않는다고 했다. 그 이후에도 굉장히 많은 것들을 이뤘다. 방탄소년단은 항상 겸손하면서도 자기 자신에 대한 믿음을 갖고 있다. 이런 많은 성공에도 어떻게 자신에 대한 진정성을 유지하는지 궁금하다.

제이홉: 성공에 대한 기준을 많이 안 두려는 편이다. 그 기준을 맞춰버리면 어떤 것에 다다르기 위해 정신적으로나 육체적으로나 굉장히 많이 피로해진다. 그래서 그 기준을 잡기보다, 그냥 하는 걸 열심히 하고 지금 내 삶과 현재 상황과 기분에 만족하면서 살아가다 보면 자연스럽게 그런 많은 노력에 대한 결과물들이 나온다. 그런 것에 연연하지 않으려고 많이 노력을 하는 편이다. 그런 식으로 평정심을 유지하고 스스로를 만들어 나가는 편이다.

RM: 마지막 질문이다 보니 한마디를 첨언하겠다. 굉장히 간단하다. 성공을 100%라고 한다면 성공의 비결 중 50%는 아미다. 우리 멤버들이 각각 5% 정도인 것 같다. 그러면 35%가 되고, 나머지 15%는 하이브와 빅히트의 몫이다. 만약 이 성공을 트로피라 생각하면, 내가 실제로 차지하는 부분은 굉장히 조그마한 끄트머리밖에 없다고 생각한다. 이것이 내가 만든 성공이 아니고 여러 사람의 성공이라고 생각하면 나 자신을 겸손하게 유지하게 되고, 이런 마인드를 갖는 게 이 일을 하면서 살아남는 데에 굉장히 중요한 요소인 것 같다.

BTS PERMISSION TO DANCE ON STAGE - LA concert press conference

“We can keep at it a long time because ARMY’s with us”

The press conference for BTS’s Permission to Dance on Stage LA concert was held November 28 at 2 P.M. (EST) at SoFi Stadium just before their second performance. “The past two years with the pandemic weren’t really easy—not just for us, for everyone,” BTS member RM said at the conference. “But today we will try to show how much we’ve grown through these past two years.” The concert was more than a chance to see their fans in person for the first time in two years; it was also a chance for BTS, who has been giving hope and comfort to people weathering the pandemic through their songs “Dynamite,” “Butter” and “Permission to Dance,” to reaffirm with ARMY the messages behind their music. This article recaps BTS’s thoughts on what they’re trying to convey in this concert about their songs, ARMY and what they want to say about this era where hope is sorely needed.

Greetings and thoughts on the concert

V: I’m thrilled we can finally have an in-person concert after two years of waiting. With the life we took for granted gone, the two years leading up to this point have been an extremely sad and difficult time for us, but I’m really looking forward to today’s concert and we put in a lot of practice for it. So now I’m full to the brim with excitement. I want to give ARMY and reporters happy vibes.

SUGA: We’re finally holding an in-person concert after nearly two years since the pandemic. I was so excited, and even got nervous performing, thinking, Is this all a dream? This always happens to me, from our debut eight years ago and including our debut in the States four years ago. When I think back on these two years of being unable to perform, nothing I did came easy. We’ve always made an effort to overcome such barriers, and the same goes for this concert. While performing, I thought about how BTS’s strength is that we can keep trying without fear, no matter what challenges are before us. We’ll continue to take on challenges and overcome them in the future as well.

Jin: This is our first press conference abroad since the Wembley Stadium concert in London so I’m both nervous and excited. Thank you to all the reporters who’ve come from far away to see us. I hope that, following this concert, we’ll be able to have many more concerts with ARMY. After this concert, we also want to have one in Korea. That’s the plan, so keep your eyes open for that.

Jung Kook: First off, thank you for taking your time out to spend it with us today. Just like last year, we’re getting a lot of love this year, too. With the pandemic, we released emotionally honest songs and songs to give the hope and comfort needed to overcome this moment together. With so many people giving us love and rooting for us, we grew stronger, too. I’ll channel that energy into our performance today.

RM: Seeing the scene filled with all the fans yesterday got me really emotional beyond words and finally meeting the members of the press in person, face to face, is so touching and such a pleasure for me. The recent Artist of the Year at the AMAs and the second Grammy nomination were truly meaningful for us. As artists who started out in Korea, the limitations of our identity, like genre and other invisible walls—we felt that they truly existed, but every moment we try to live our best, to do every performance and all our music with all of our hearts. I think those small moments truly made this mountain for us. Going back on tour and seeing all the fans finally after two years makes us feel like this really is the beginning of a new chapter. The past two years with the pandemic weren’t really easy—not just for us, for everyone. But today we will try to show how much we’ve grown through these past two years. Thank you for being here with us tonight.

Jimin: Thank you to all the reporters who showed up for our first in-person concert in two years. I was really lethargic and sad the whole time since I couldn’t see the fans. But we did all we could by releasing a string of songs: “Dynamite,” “Butter” and “Permission to Dance.” We made a special effort to give comfort to everyone who stayed with us through this whole time and for ourselves as well. Being up on stage in front of our fans for the first time in forever, it feels like we’re right back where we should be. I hope everyone can return to where they need to be soon for a fresh start.

j-hope: We’re back in the US again for this concert following a visit to the UN General Assembly. Now that I’m seeing the reporters here, it feels like we’re really in the States. Actually, I feel a bit awkward saying BTS has become the voice of a generation and represents them, but I also think it comes along with a special responsibility. We were just honored that we could make and share the music we love, but when I stop and think about it, I think that’s the power and energy behind BTS’s music. We also put in a ton of effort practicing for this concert to be sure we could convey that power and energy our music has. I hope everyone has a good time. I heard that not only are there a lot of American fans here, but a lot of Korean fans came as well because it’s the first in-person concert in a long time. I hope it helps everyone to shake off their feelings of being worn out, feeling tired and feeling depressed from the pandemic and that it’s fun and makes them feel happy.

Were you nervous to get back on stage after so long? Do you lose the ease of performing after such a long time, or does it come back to you immediately?

Jin: It’s been about two years since we put on a live show. We have some time to talk to each other in the green room before the start of our concerts and what we talked about the most yesterday before the concert was how we would probably cry during the opening song “ON” when we saw everyone in the audience. We practiced a ton because it was going to be the first time seeing the fans in a long time and we were worried we might make some mistakes. It was our first time in front of an audience in two years so all the members were really nervous and practiced a lot. Even though we talked about that, though, nobody actually cried. (laughs)

j-hope: Um, I almost cried.

V: Tears came out of my nose. (laughs)

You say you didn’t cry, but surely you felt different after performing for the first time in two years. I’d like to know the first thing you were feeling after the concert ended. I also heard that some of the members were talking to fans after the concert, and that V said he likes jazz and wants to try out different genres. I’d like to know if you have any plans to work in genres that you haven’t tried before and if you have any plans to release any albums, singles or mixtapes before the year is out.

Jimin: I had a lot of regrets after yesterday’s performance, if I’m being honest. I’ve been waiting for nothing but the day I could see the fans again for two years and those two years felt longer than I thought. So I was worried about what facial expressions to make, what kind of gestures to do, what I should say and in what way and how much I should express my feelings. So I felt regretful because I feel like I couldn’t enjoy everything while I was looking out at the fans. I think today I’ll try to be a little more relaxed and enjoy myself more.

V: I grew up listening to that kind of music when I was little, and I’m getting more into blues and jazzy things lately. I thought I wanted to express myself through these things so I’m trying to work with them but I’m not a pro when it comes to them so it’s difficult. I hope I can share that kind of music with everyone someday.

j-hope: I usually try not to draw any lines between genres and just keep working hard. I’m also trying to integrate those kinds of things into my mixtape. I’ll keep working hard because I can only ever release something if I come up with something good, but I’m not sure or even very confident I can put anything out this year.

On behalf of ARMY, I just wanted to say congratulations on your first concert back. Your first time actually performing in front of ARMY was at the AMAs when you won three awards, where the crowd was mostly ARMY. How did that experience compare to performing last night in front of tens of thousands of your fans again?

Jung Kook: It didn’t really hit me until the AMAs, to be honest. We always say that ARMY cheering gives us a lot of strength whenever we’re at such an event. It was a lot of help at the concert yesterday, too. We get the same big value from ARMY cheering whether we’re doing a concert or at an awards ceremony. That got us really excited and I think we were able to put on a good show thanks to that.

You first received your award at the Billboard Music Awards in 2017 and then you released a skit that expressed your sort of hesitations and your fears. You had lines about, “I have fears. Will I go down? What will happen next?” So now that you have received major awards, including at the AMAs, do you still harbor those hesitations and fears, or did they disappear at this point? Also, your most beautiful moments in life continued over the past four years. How do you feel about that?

SUGA: If you’re asking whether I’ve totally gotten over the fears and hesitancy compared to back then, then no, actually. I think anyone living in this world always lives with fear and hesitation. The difference between then and now is that I’m enjoying myself. One of the things we all said after COVID-19 happened was, Why weren’t we able to enjoy ourselves back then? And once it became a situation where it became impossible to enjoy things, I thought quite a bit about why I wasn’t able to accept things at the time, why I was afraid and scared and why I wasn’t able to enjoy it. So I was seriously really happy for this AMA award in particular. I was so happy to see an audience in person for the first time in two years, and the award was a bonus. My mindset’s the same as it was then, but I also realized on the other hand how lucky it is that I’m able to enjoy myself a little more. And I’m realizing how truly thankful I am for the past few years leading up to now, which you described as our “most beautiful moments in life.” Whenever we have an interview or talk to the media in the US, we get a lot of questions about how we’re able to be with a fandom as passionate as ours. We can keep at it a long time because of all the fans—ARMY are with us. I could feel it during the concert yesterday, where I once again realized that their movements, actions and voices keep us alive.

You have a lot of Florida fans—Florida ARMY—and they want to send a message. You know, you have a lot of ARMY here that are here for the concert but a lot of ARMY that could not attend this special four-day event, so what is your message to the ARMY who are not able to attend?

Jung Kook: We feel bad we can’t see those ARMY, too, and we’re waiting for the day we can put on more performances. Seeing as we haven’t been able to see them even once in two years, if we had the chance, We’d want to put on a bunch of concerts and performances and perform our songs all over, but with the way things are currently, I’m sad that moment hasn’t come. But still, we’re going to put our everything into performing for the people who did come to see us, and I hope the day we can see even more ARMY right in front of us comes as soon as possible. We’re really wishing for that day to come and, as a singer, it’s one of the things I want most of all.

We, in the US, had to deal with Asian hate since 2020. Your positive light has obviously combated that, so how do you feel or what comment do you have to make about the positive role that you have taken to show a positive light to Asians and Asian Americans?

RM: When it comes to Asian hate, we always feel very heavy responsibility. Like I said before, I’m not born and raised abroad, but, through the past years, on our path all over the world, sometimes I truly felt the walls, and the walls can’t always be described in words. Sometimes they’re visible, sometimes they’re not. So when we talk about Asian hate, our path, all the words, our music—I just hope that this could truly help every Asian in the world, especially those who live in countries abroad. If there’s something that we can help with or that we can do that could give consolation, we’re always open, and we strive to expand diversity and stop discrimination and racism. Thank you very much for asking the question.

LA’s been in a frenzy over BTS’ visit. There’s been crowds of ARMY not only at SoFi Stadium but at hotels, the airport, Korean restaurants and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. BTS’ mark can be found all over the place. There’s also been reports in the LA media day in and day out on BTS over the past few days. Given all that, it seems the group’s status has changed from when they visited the Rose Bowl stadium a couple years ago. How does this kind of response make you feel?

SUGA: The stadium tour we did in 2019 was actually bigger than this one. We tried to think about what we could do during the COVID-19 era, and we put out “Dynamite,” “Butter” and “Permission to Dance,” which lots of people all around the world really loved. So while the scale of things isn’t much different from before, they seem to be way, way more happy to see us now. I think it’s also different because we haven’t been able to perform for two years. I kept thinking about what it would be like to see the response for real while we were just recording “Dynamite,” “Butter” and “Permission to Dance” in Korea without an audience, but now I’m having an even better time and feel even happier than I expected to.

Jung Kook: Everybody ended up being unable to do even the most trivial things, like their hobbies, their work or seeing other people. Tours were always more important to us than anything, but because we couldn’t do one, things like concerts and awards ceremonies became really important to us.

Jung Kook, you gave a very touching acceptance speech at the AMAs, but what were you going to say after, “I’m going to focus on”?

Jung Kook: This is really embarrassing, but there were just three more words: “enjoying every moment.” (laughs)

This is the second year in a row that you’ve been nominated for a Grammy Award. How does that make you feel?

SUGA: I still can’t believe we’ve been nominated two years in a row at all. I grew up watching the Grammy Awards shows and performances, so while in one way I’m still excited and hopeful about being nominated, I know it won’t be easy to win. It’s tough to be nominated, let alone win, and like we said before, there’s obstacles to overcome and we’re thankful for the challenges we can overcome going forward, I think. I hope we’re able to overcome.

Jin: The one award we haven’t won yet is a Grammy. That doesn’t mean the other awards don’t make me happy. But I would still like to win a Grammy, since it’s the one we haven’t been able to get yet.

SUGA: There’s a saying: There’s no such thing as a tree that doesn’t fall when you chop at it 10 times. It would be nice to knock it over with just two swings, but that might be wishful thinking.

In 2017, you said you weren’t expecting that level of success—and that was then. A lot’s happened since then. You’ve always been humble and you’ve always believed in yourself, but amongst all of the success, how do you stay true to yourself?

j-hope: I don’t really want to set up a specific level for success. If you set that kind of standard, you’ll end up burnt out mentally and physically trying to accomplish that. So instead of assigning such standards, just work hard at what you’re doing and keep living your life feeling content with your life and current situation and how you feel. That way, the fruit of your labor comes about naturally. I usually try not to worry too much about that sort of thing. That’s how I keep my composure and carry myself forward.

RM: I’ll add something since this is the last question. It’s very simple. If there’s 100% to success, I put half with the ARMYs, and then, the members, they put, like, 5% each, so that’s 35, and 15% from HYBE and Big Hit. If it’s a trophy, my percent is just the edge of the trophy, so I always tell myself, You’re just a little part of this whole journey—this success is not all yours. I always try to realize that and it really helps me keep myself down to Earth, and I think that’s really important to survive in this industry.
