happy 9th anniversary, my dear seventeen. can you believe it? we've come so far from where we started, from the days when we performed in front of empty seats and no one knew our names, to now, standing on stage in our dream stadium with 72,000 carats cheering for us. i would be lying if i said it wasn't a tough journey. it is an incredible journey as well, full of ups and downs, challenges, and triumphs. there were moments where it felt almost impossible to overcome, but every bit of our hard work was worth it.

to our carats, who we love the most, thank you. your unwavering light and support have been our guiding light, without all of you, none of this would've been possible. you believed in us even when times were hard, and for that, we are always grateful. you've made our dreams come true and we hope to continue making you proud.

[Young Forever. 청춘이 또 다른 청춘에게]

-2021년 작성한 앨범 리뷰-

방탄소년단의 <화양연화 Young Forever>는 <화양연화 pt.1>,<화양연화 pt.2>의 청춘 2부작을 마무리하는 리패키지 앨범이다. 화양연화의 뜻처럼 인생에서 가장 아름답고 행복한 시간, 꽃 피는 청춘의 순간들을 23개의 곡으로 담아내며 그들만의 방식으로 청춘을 얘기한다. 코로나로 불안하고 답답한 지금, 정처 없이 흘러가는 청춘을 잃을까 두려운 이들에게 가장 들려주고 싶은 앨범 <화양연화 Young Forever>를 소개한다.

“사랑과 청춘이 다른 말일 수 있을까”

‘Epilogue : Young Forever’에서의 영원한 청춘은 ‘꿈’을 꾸는 것이다. 가사 속에서 무대 위 노래하는 꿈을 얘기하지만, 마음속에 사랑을 꿈꾸는 것 또한 우리의 청춘이 영원 하는 방법이다.

그러나 성장하는 청춘의 사랑은 야속하게도 아픈 날들이 많다. 달콤하게 너와 사랑에 빠지는 행복한 순간(‘Converse high’)도 잠시 미완숙한 나의 사랑(‘Butterfly’, ‘House of Cards’)이 너를 힘들게 한다. 위태로운 마지막 낙엽처럼 어떻게든 버텨보려 하지만(‘고엽’) 결국 떨어지고 이별을 맞이한다. 허무하게 끝난 청춘의 이별은 세상 전부가 무너지는 아픔을 준다. 외쳐도 보고(‘I need you’), 달려도 보고(‘Run’), 나 좀 구해달라(‘Save me’) 한 번 더 잡아(‘잡아줘’) 보지만 결국 이별을 돌이킬 순 없다. 사랑과 이별 후 청춘은 말한다. ‘사랑이란 아프고 아픈 것, 이별이란 아프고 더 아픈 것’(‘Love is not over’). 그렇지만 부디 끝나지 않기를.

이처럼 <화양연화 Young Forever> 앨범에서는 화양연화 시리즈에서 보여주었던 사랑과 이별의 과정을 감성적인 사운드가 돋보이는 9곡에 담았다. 특히 <화양연화 pt.2>의 타이틀 곡이었던 ‘I need you’는 아련하게 떨어지는 꽃잎을 연상케 하는 동양적인 사운드와 반전 있는 ���렉트릭 힙합으로 애절한 사랑을 표현해 방탄소년단이 가지고 있던 기존의 이미지를 벗어나 더 주목받게 되는 계기가 되어 의미 있다.

“방탄소년단이 청춘의 자존감을 높여주는 방법”

열정과 노력으로 꽉 채워진 자신감을 ‘쩔어’에서 보여줬다면  타이틀곡 ‘불타오르네’는 반대로 열정과 노력이 당연하게 요구되는 청춘들에게 우리는 존재만으로도 타오른다고 말한다. ‘네 멋대로 살어 어차피 (네 삶은) 네 꺼야 애쓰지 좀 말어 져도 괜찮아’. 별거 아닌 듯 쿨하게 내뱉은 위로의 말을 잔잔하기보단 와일드하고 폭발시키는 듯한 에너지 넘치는 사운드에 담았다. 특히 ‘불타오르네’의 역동적인 퍼포먼스는 ‘Intro : 화양연화’의 모습처럼 꿈을 향해 달려가는 일이 문득 불안해지고 숨 가빠오는 청춘들의 뜨거운 스트레스를 시원하게 날려준다.

때론 위로가 아닌 시대 비판적인 시선으로 청춘들과 소통한다. 수록곡 ‘뱁새’는 시작부터 터무니없이 불공평한 시대의 벽에 부딪혀 좌절하는 청춘들에게 오히려 노력 부족을 탓하고 잘못을 돌리는 현시대를 풍자했다. 당당히 ‘이건 정상이 아냐’ 불공평한 룰을 바꾸라 말하는 동시대의 7명 청춘들이 또 다른 청춘의 위태로운 자존감에 강렬하지만 위트있는 사운드로 힘찬 숨을 불어 넣는다.

“세상 반대편까지 들리도록 외치는 메시지”

지금은 7명의 청춘, 방탄소년단이 세상에 주목받는 일이 당연한 일상이지만, 아직 그들의 목소리가 세상 반대편 저 너머까지 닿지 않을 때가 있었다. 전해지지 않는 목소리, 불안한 미래에 외로운 날들을 헤엄쳤지만 포기하지 않고 자신처럼 외로울 다른 누군가를 위해 멈추지 않고 신호를 보냈다. ‘Whalien 52’는 올드 스쿨한 리듬에 높게 외치는 보컬 사운드는 노래로 신호를 보내는 고래의 심경을 잘 표현했다. 가슴을 울리는 서정적인 사운드가 아닌데도 그 신호가 가슴에 울려 퍼지는 것은 새삼 벅차오르는 경험이다. 그리고 이제 방탄소년단은 세상 반대편을 넘어 곳곳의 모든 외로운 이들에게 위로를 전하고 있다.

“꿈, 희망, 전진, 전진”

앨범에서 보여준 열기구가 문득 궁금하다. 그들이 열기구를 타고 높은 곳에서 바라본 하늘은 해가 떠오르고 있었을까, 지고 있었을까. 어떤 것이라도 상관은 없다. 밤이 찾아오면 조금 쉬고, 다시 내일 해가 뜨면 높이 떠오를 수 있다. 우리도 언젠가 다시 ‘Ma City’를 들으며 곳곳을 여행하고 ‘Forever, we are young’을 공연장에서 다 함께 외치는 날이 돌아올 것이다. 지금은 그저 우리만의 방식으로 청춘을 이어나가면 된다.
