Part 2!
-I'd like to talk about "Beyond Evil," for which you won a Baeksang award last May.
I think the truth within the story of "Beyond Evil" was conveyed well. I think we were able to express what we wanted to in a new way and deliver something fun, and it felt rewarding that that intention was conveyed.
-In the TV category, the competition for the Best Male Actor award was really fierce, but you ended up with the trophy.
I remember (when my name was called as the winner). I'm always surprised when I win an award because I never know. I was thankful and all of that.
-You worked really well together with the other actors and the production staff, though.
I have a big age difference with Yeo Jingoo-ssi, but Jingoo-ssi did a really amazing job. The script was written so that the two axes (of the main characters) stood up well, and Director Shim Nayeon was able to coordinate them well to balance them. The final product came out well because everyone worked together well. Now Kim Shinrok, who was also in "Beyond Evil," is getting a lot of attention, and she sometimes contacts me. We ask how the other is doing and want to meet up, but can't because of the pandemic. The same with Choi Daehoon, Lee Gyuhee hyung, and Choi Seung-eun-ssi. They're all busy, so even if there weren't a pandemic, I think we probably wouldn't be able to meet up. I'm unemployed now, but I'm glad they're all keeping busy. (smile)
-What does winning an award mean to the actor Shin Hakyun?
I don't put a lot of meaning on awards in my life, but if I win one, I'm grateful. It means about that much?
-It seems you'd be happier at seeing your fans happy.
I like seeing my fans happy rather than feeling myself. Actually, I was in a daze so I don't remember much about winning the award, but seeing the people around me happy makes me happy.
-I'm curious about whether the "acting god Shin Hakyun" [Shin can also mean "god."] pays attention to ratings.
The rating are numbers, so it's not like I don't pay attention. But it's better if only 10 peole watch and those 10 people are satisfied. I'm greedy for that kind of ratings. Rather than making something that attracts a majority, I'd rather make something that, even if only a minority watches, they're satisfied with it. I want to do projects that satisfy the viewer. It's by doing that that I can work hard and feel rewarded and enjoy making those projects. I think that's the kind of greedy that I am.
-There's not a lot of information about your next project, "Yonder."
I went all over the country filming "Yonder" - Jeolla-do, Gyeongsang-do, Chungcheong-do, Kangwon-do, and Seoul. I play a husband who's lost his wife, but he gets an email from his late wife and the story is of him going to find his wife through that email. It's set in the near future. It's a sci-fi mystery, but it's a realistic story that anyone might experience one day. It's a story that makes you think about life and death. Though I played a man who was meeting his late wife, I think it's relevant to how everyone's talking about the metaverse these days.
-Did you already know the director, Lee Junik?
We'd never worked together on a project, but we're close. I did the movie "The Spy" when I was in my 20s, and Director Lee Junik was the boss of the film company Cineworld. He didn't direct me then, but after long time, we met again as director and actor.
-It's Director Lee Junik's first TV drama and it's an unfamiliar genre.
I like trying new things. I connect to new stories. I'm always up for trying something new, whatever it is and with whomever. I haven't seen all of the final product (of "Yonder") but I feel confident that you'll be able to see a new kind of project of Director Lee Junik's. It's so full of an effort to make something new that if not for the director's name on it, you'd think, "Is this Director Lee Junik?"
-What kind of person is Director Lee Junik?
He's a person who really loves his work. He loves the filming sites, he loves people; he's the kind of person who's serious and always gives his all at every moment. I guess everyone is, but he's really really passionate on site. I learned a lot through the opportunity to work with him this time. He's also pleasant and good at talking.
-What should people focus on when "Yonder" debuts and they watch it?
I'd say the sincerity of the story and the novelty that it tries to express. Those are the things that make it an attractive project. It's set in the future, but feels like a current story, and it's a new sort of sci-fi.
-With "Yonder," you're having a stab at an OTT platform (TVING) for the first time.
I didn't think there was much difference between them (OTT and traditional platforms). The working environment is the same as with any movie. The difference versus other dramas is that you can make something 100% in advance. With "Yonder," it felt a bit like filming a movie with a slightly long running time. It was an atmosphere in which we were able to film freely and were able to tell a new story in a new way, and spread out as much as we liked.
-Still, I imagine you must feel a little pressure on your shoulders since it's your first try.
My shoulders? (smile) I just did the same as I always do. It's not like I could do differently. You have to do it the way you always do. No matter the field or the type of media, I just do my best. I just make the product convey the story we want to convey.

[류현진 등판]아레나도와 두 번째 대결도 제압...4이닝 무실점
