VIXX’s Leo confirmed to appear in the musical ‘Great Comet’! The role of Anatole, a charming and devilish man!
Tumblr media
By. ROLLINGSTONE KOREA
interview and translation under cut
VIXX’s Leo will appear on stage in a new role through the musical ‘Great Comet’. Leo was named to the lineup of the musical 'Great Comet' (planned and produced by Shownote Co., Ltd.), which was recreated by Dave Malloy, a composer and playwright who is attracting attention in the United States, based on the story of 'War and Peace', a masterpiece by the great Russian writer Tolstoy. The musical 'Great Comet' ' is set in Moscow, Russia ahead of Napoleon's invasion in 1812 and tells the story of Pierre, Natasha, and Anatole becoming entangled in a love triangle. Leo appears in the play as Anatole, a young soldier with an irresistible charm who seduces Natasha. The musical ‘Great Comet’ expressed expectations, saying, “Leo, who has proven his improved acting skills, will participate in the role of Anatole,” and “The character of Anatole, who will be portrayed with his natural movements and attractive voice, cannot be missed.” Meanwhile, Leo has appeared in the musicals 'Mata Hari', 'Monte Cristo', 'The Last Kiss', 'Elizabeth', 'Marie Antoinette', 'Frankenstein', 'Bungee Jumping', 'West Side Story', and the play 'Tebasland'. As he has shown solid acting skills and perfect character digestion through numerous works such as ' It received rave reviews and won two Tony Awards, four Drama Desk Awards, and two External Critics Awards. Attention is focused on the transformation of Leo, who will play the lead character after coming to Korea and being recognized for his work and popularity, including winning the Producer Award, Choreography Award, Stage Design Award, Lighting Design Award, and Ensemble Award at the 6th Korean Musical Awards. In particular, 'The Great Comet' is an audience-participatory musical in which the boundary between the stage and the audience is blurred, so Leo's passionate performance will be vividly conveyed to the audience. As it is a work that requires him to perform both acting and playing instruments at the same time, he is also considered a K-pop artist. Expectations are rising for Leo's active performance. Meanwhile, Leo's next musical 'The Great Comet' will open at the Universal Arts Center in Seoul on March 26.

"Bungee Jumping With You" Ren - "Tears overflowed from finding value during a difficult time" (X-Sports News - X's Interview 1)
Tumblr media
[source - This is the first part of a three-part interview. Part 2, Part 3]
In the aftermath of the film's release in 2001, the musical Bungee Jumping of Their Own intensifies its emotions through lyrical numbers.
This time, former NU'EST member Ren, who was bursting with talent and energy in the musicals Jamie and Hedwig, enthusiastically plays the main character in a love that transcends time, space, and death.
"I didn't know much about Bungee Jumping of Their Own. I heard about it for the first time when I got the offer, so I looked up the movie. It was a fresh story and also quite shocking. So I thought about it a lot. I worried about whether I could understand and pull off the character of Hyunbin. And the practice required for that was really difficult, since it gets more difficult and confusing the more you get into a character. I wondered if what I was doing was right.
In the end, I understood Hyunbin's feelings and had a good performance. During the curtain call after the first show, the fans and the audience members clapped and cheered, and I couldn't help but tear up. I cried so much. It felt like I'd gotten something of value from a difficult time. Even now, somehow I still get emotional."
Tumblr media
Bungee Jumping of Their Own, which had its first show in 2012, was the first production resulting from the harmonious composer and writer combo of Maybe Happy Ending's Will [Aronson] and Hue [Park]. It received the award for Best Music in the 18th Korea Musical Awards and the award for Best Composer/Writer in The 7th Musical Awards.
"It's a really beautiful show. The songs are so good and the actors are all amazing. Everyone has good chemistry and it's a very emotional production, so I wish many people would come see it," Ren said confidently.
The film of the same name, featuring impressive performances by Lee Byunghun and Lee Eunju, subverts the structure of the typical melodrama by presenting a mysterious love that overcomes gender and even death. The musical faithfully follows the events of the movie.
"My first thought was that Lee Byunghun-sunbaenim acted so well. I kept getting overwhelmed with emotions as I watched it. I thought, he's not Lee Byunghun for nothing. He was a great actor even back then.
The way people interpret the conclusion depends on each person, but I personally think it was beautiful. Same-sex relationships used to be taboo back then, right? So I think that was the only choice they could make. I think they both made that choice with the belief that there is such a thing as reincarnation, that they could meet again. 'This way, I'll see you again, I'll love you again.' It was a really thought-provoking film."
Tumblr media
In 1983, university student Inwoo shared a love with Taehee, who he felt was his destiny after she took cover under his umbrella. But Taehee passed away in an accident, and seventeen years later, Inwoo, now a Korean language teacher, is confused when a high school student, Hyunbin, reminds him of Taehee.
"While watching the movie three or four times, I kept referencing the character of Hyunbin. Not just Hyunbin, but I have to understand the whole production so I can express it well. So I watched it many times. Since I'm playing Hyunbin, I can't help but focus on him. While observing how the actor (Yeo Hyunsoo) carried out every emotion and tone, I followed what he did and practiced a lot. Hyunbin is completely different from Taehee in gender, appearance, and age, but her reincarnated self is in him. Since I have to figure out how to relay his story of deep connection and love, he's not an easy character to play.
"I thought I did well, but that was just pride," Ren confessed.
"The person who made me realize that is Choi Yeonwoo-noona. Hyunbin has to appear like Taehee, so if it doesn't appear that way, she said that the actors who play Inwoo will have a hard time too. My hyung-nims were really kind and respected me as an actor, so they didn't want to tell me because they thought I might feel hurt.
Yeonwoo-noona is an honest person. She didn't really care about those things and she told me about it because she thought it might help me. I listened to her say that it would be good for me to understand and analyze [the role] some more, and to think about it some more, and I really did think about it a lot at home.
Yeonwoo-noona's words really hit me hard. It was like I was missing the most important part. I worried so much that I even dreamed about it. I observed my noonas a lot. During practice when the noonas would be rehearsing, I could actually rest too. But I went to the center and kept studying how to move my hands and how to speak."
Tumblr media
Ren's effort paid off. The actors were touched by his performance.
"After that rehearsal, everyone gave a standing ovation. They said they saw how hard I worked. Yeonwoo-noona watched that rehearsal and cried, too. I thought, this is really fun. it felt great to think about how I'd grown, and seeing these amazing actors moved to tears by my performance made me feel acknowledged."

Bungee Jumping of Their Own (Kim Dae-seung, 2001) it seems kind of a copout to make a gay love story more palatable in a homophobic society by making the male love interest the reincarnation of the female first love. but this is still quite a beautiful movie. nostalgic, in a way. movies don't look or feel like this anymore, but when i started getting into them: this was it. maybe that's why i like it more than i probably should. but it devotes itself to sensitivity, to surrealist love, to exploring taboo.

HELLO AND GOOD MORNING I HAVE MADE A DISCOVERY
WARNING: POTENTIAL SPOILERS ABOUT NCT JAEHYUN'S NEW DRAMA
As some already know, NCT's Jaehyun will be starring in a (boiled down to its basic principle) soulmate BL drama based on a movie called Bungee Jumping Of Their Own (Orig. 번지점프를 하다). The movie seemed to be pretty popular considering it was released in 2001, but that could also be attributed to the lack of actual homosexual interaction and the implication that they have to wait until they're both reincarnated as the opposite sex so they can be together *queue eye-rolling*
A BRIEF HISTORY ABOUT LGBTQ+ RIGHTS IN KOREA (Skip to the next big bold text to get into the tea)
I am no expert on Korean culture, so I will cite these sources to back up my observations.
It seems that homosexuality has actually not been that uncommon in Korean history, with quite a few kings/queens/princes/princesses having lovers of the same sex. During the Goryeo Period, homosexuality was embraced and even had "social worth" (Wikipedia). But during the JOSEON period, officials were like "that shit is evil, stop that" and as we all know, Joseon was the most recent dynastic kingdom in the history of Korea and where much of the culture was still flourishing and growing. It was during this 500 year period that Hangul, the official writing system of Korea, was created (to give you a picture of how influential this time period was on today's Korea).
And then.
Korea was annexed by Japan, and a lot of their culture, language, and history were suppressed or wiped out. But the history between Korea, Japan, and China is long and they have all influenced each other culturally for centuries and centuries. Homosexuality used to be illegal in China, and as recently as March of this year, Japan has just ruled that a ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional, while same-sex marriage remains unrecognized in Korea.
The influences of the Joseon Dynasty, Japan, and China have all contributed to a less-than-accepting attitude toward homosexuality in Korea. In 2020, a survey conducted on the public stated that 24.8% of Koreans would accept an LGBTQ+ person as a neighbor. The percentage for coworker and best friend are even lower, with acceptance as a partner being 0%. So Korea still has a long way to go in terms of accepting sexualities that aren't simply opposite-sex attraction and coupling.
NOW HERE IS WHERE THINGS GET INTERESTING!!!!!
The history of South Korea's acceptance of homosexuality IN THE MEDIA is way more accepting than that in real life and of the general public.
In 2001, when Bungee Jumping of Their Own came out, so did Harisu, a Korean transgender performer who, although facing lots of discrimination, was moderately successful and remains an icon for transgender movements in Korea. The year prior, absolute legend Hong Seokcheon came out as gay and while he did face lots of hardship because of it, he remains the most prominent open LGBTQ+ person in the entertainment industry.
In recent years, the exposure of the LGBTQ+ community has become a lot more prominent in Korean media. Popular dramas such as Itaewon class, Love Alarm, and Reply 1997 have LGBTQ+ representation. There are many more dramas with representation, and a special shout-out to Astro's Moonbin, who portrayed a homosexual character in Eighteen.
Despite this representation, it is still said that for a popular entertainer, especially a KPOP idol (the industry does not guarantee anything, you could be on top today and irrelevant tomorrow), coming out is the quickest way to end your career.
SO THIS IS WHY!!!!! WHEN TXT MADE A REFERENCE TO THE MOVIE BUNGEE JUMPING OF OUR OWN ON THEIR TO DO EPISODE YESTERDAY, I WAS!!!!!! LIKE, THEY HAVE SEEN THAT MOVIE BRBRBFHRBRBF
It literally means nothing because we all know that members of TXT have openly supported LGBTQ+ rights, but I was so happy that they've seen the movie and it makes me even more excited to see how Jaehyun will portray the character in the drama adaptation. So here is the moment from the movie and when they quoted it:
In the movie, the main character becomes a teacher after his first love and soul mate passes away. When the teacher, a bit timid and philosophical, is asking the kids about what they did for valentine's day, a student in the back suddenly says "첫사랑 얘기해 주세요!" Which translates to "Tell us about your first love!"
Tumblr media
In TXT's latest To Do, they are acting as teachers while they educate the other members and the audience on their own lives.
When Soobin, the shyest member of TXT, awkwardly stands at the board, Kai asks "Teacher, can't we just take a break today?" and Yeonjun follows this by saying "Tell us about your first love!" Taehyun and Kai repeat him with a laugh. They use the same verbiage as the movie, "첫사랑 얘기해 주세요!"
Tumblr media
Ik it's minor but I think it's cool that they've seen this movie (I enjoyed this movie for the most part, trying to look past the underlying homophobic and sexist themes that I'm hoping were just a product of it's time and won't follow into the kdrama remake) and I am suuuuper stoked to see Jaehyun take on such an important role in the story!

aesthetic & playlist: musicals
suji is rather new in watching musicals. it’s not that she didn’t know the existence of them before, but she simply wasn’t interested enough to get out and watch one (she wouldn’t have known where to begin either). it’s not until a friend recently dragged her to watch a musical that she fell in love. she’s always felt that musicals were on another league because of everything that’s required, and she knows she’s nowhere near trained enough to star in one. however, in the future, if she ever gets the chance, she’d love to have a try at participating in one.
seeing that she’s new to musicals, there’s no clear characteristic of what suji finds herself enjoying when it comes to musical numbers. since watching her first musical, she’d been bothering her friend for more musical number recommendations, but she still finds herself leaning towards the ones that she saw in person simply because there’s such a vast difference in sound quality. musical numbers carry so much grit and emotion that can’t be delivered through earphones. however, if she were to choose, she does end up liking the numbers that are usually sung by a character self-reflecting or learning something new. but as is seen with her regular music taste, she also just likes songs she thinks have beautiful melodies.

Love at first sight:
The summer of 1983. Korean literature student, Seo In-woo does not believe in love at first sight or destiny, but all that is to change when he meets sculpting major, In Tae-hee. He is overwhelmed by her rain soaked black hair, her beautiful face and bold language. However, In-woo's military enlistment, which he thought was only going to cause a brief break-up, leads to an irreversible separation for them.
An unfinished love:
The spring of 2000. Just like Tae-hee, who suddenly jumped underneath In-woo's umbrella 17 years ago during a a heavy shower, his world is once again shaken. It is the begining of a new semester at In-woo's (now a teacher) university, and a new student seems strangely familiar. Who is this person who has a habit of spreading his little finger just as Tae-hee did? Has a lighter of Tae-hee's face engraved on it? And has a rare and unique curiosity?
