Closed for @unscrxpted - An Innocent Man Starring Maelona Kristoffsdottir & Wynn Kristoffson, with minor appearances by Iris Wonder & Ben French
Wynn sighs as he lays back in his room and tries to process what had happened visiting the trolls. This was crazy, right? He-- he had to be losing his mind, after everything else he’s seen and experienced and been through.
“Oh, come on, Kristoff, we didn't do everything we did to get you two together, we didn't get rid of the other guy just to get shut out of stuff like this!”
Oh, he’d known who “the other guy” was. All of Arendelle knew who he was. But... it’s the rest of it that’s sticking out in his mind, in his parents’ minds, in his sister’s mind. He felt like he must be losing it. It feels unreal. Like some bad prank.
He sighs and sits up, looking around at his empty room, coming up with the only thing he can think of, not trusting himself to text, not with his head like this, not right now. “...are you here?”

"It's better than being lonely because you've been left. With things like this, I know exactly why I'm on my own." Wynn shrugs. "Better than not knowing why everyone leaves."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Well, doesn't that get lonely sometimes?" Ella asked with a tilt of her head. She couldn't understand how someone, anyone wouldn't want a friend. But she had an understanding nature, and it wasn't so surprising that sometimes you rather would be left alone.

Wynn chuckles. "Thaaaat's the point. I'm not looking for friends. Or. Anything, actually. I'd rather be left on my own."

"Well, that certainly isn't very nice of you," Ella said softly. "What if someone wants to be your friend, and you ignore them?"

Ziva nodded. She opened her mouth to speak, but stopped as Brynjolf quickly came back into the room.
The knight fully appeared to Wynn, bowing beside the bed. “Your Highness, sir, the Queen is headed this way. I advise that my lady hides.”
Ziva blinked, quickly pulling away from Wynn, ruffling his hair before she ducked back into the secret passageway and shutting the door.
Mara chuckled, shaking her head. “Yeah, I guess. For some reason, even with our castle and the things that move around, it still makes me jump sometimes.” She stopped, blinking and tilting her head. Footsteps. “Someone’s coming.” She ran over to the wardrobe, throwing the doors open and jumping inside, shutting it before turning into a bat and hiding inside the pocket of a sweater.
Well, today’s the day that happens. Wynn blinks and nods to Brynjolf quickly as Ziva ducks back into hiding. “Thanks.”
He immediately kind of fusses back over his hair and flops back onto his bed for when Anna knocks on the door. “Wynn?”
“Yeah, mom, it’s open,” he says softly, sitting up as the door opens. Sighing, Anna smiles weakly at him and goes over to sit with him.
“Hey. C’mere.” She pulls him into a hug, and Wynn sighs and just accepts it, hugging her back.
Maelona shakes her head, blinking in surprise at the other’s reaction and watching her go. Well, one of the benefits of a vampire best friend as always. Her head turns at a knock on the door. “Hey, baby girl, it’s me,” her dad says. “Can I come in?”
Sighing, Maelona sits up on her bed. “Yeah, daddy, it’s open.”
Kristoff walks into his daughter’s room, seeing her sitting on her bed and smiling softly, going to join her, not saying anything and just pulling her into a hug. “I need you to know things are going to be okay, just for starters.”
Maelona presses against him as she hugs him back, nodding quietly. “I... I know. It feels like that’s hard to believe, though.”

“Anytime,” Ziva said quietly. She took a deep breath. “It’s hard. And I know it’s hard. But you’ll make it through. You’ve already made it through so much, Wynn. And you’ve got me here, too. Okay?”
Mara nodded, humming. “Yeah. It’s a difficult situation to approach, that’s for sure.”
“That’s putting it mildly,” Astrid grumbled to herself, knowing they couldn’t hear her. She sat down in a nearby chair, moving it slightly as she did.
Mara sat up a little, frowning a bit but shrugging and lying back down. “Gotta love castles and the weird things that just move sometimes.”
Wynn sighs and nods. “Okay. Okay. Thanks, Ziva. Really.”
Anna sighs as she heads for Wynn’s room. Kristoff was going to talk to Maelona. There was a lot for them to discuss about the situation, and she knows he’s going to need support just as much as the rest of them.
Maelona doesn’t even react. “I’ve gotten used to it growing up here. Doors opening or closing, things moving around or falling, it’s normal.”

Ziva laid her head on his shoulder, pulling him into a hug. “Yeah. I know.” She wanted to help. But she… didn’t know how, not really, other than just being there. She sighed, hugging him tighter. “I’m here, Wynn. I’m right here.”
Brynjolf paused, then reached over and knocked over another book, trying to silently let the prince know that he was still there, too.
Mara nodded, biting her lip. What to do, what to do… She took a deep breath, putting her hands on Maelona’s shoulders. “It’s okay to be scared, Maelona. It’s a scary situation. Everything’s… weird right now, and it’s going to be weird for a while. And yeah, there’s always going to be doubters. Do you think everyone believes I’m really not going to slaughter my family and turn my people into blood cattle?” She shrugged. “Doesn’t mean that I’m not a good person who would never do that. Your dad’s a good man. And what is it that your mom always says about what to do when you don’t know what’s next?”
“The next right thing,” Astrid mumbled to herself. She walked over, nudging a book that had been next to the picture she’d knocked over earlier.
Wynn sighs and flops against her a bit as he hugs her back, growing silent now, glancing to the book and then up, appreciation in his eyes for the ghost he can’t see, shaking badly.
Maelona sighs and sniffles, clearing her throat. “The next right thing. I know, I know. I just-- we don’t know if it’ll be the right thing for him. Overall, yeah, but-- but what if he doesn’t remember what he did while cursed? He’s gonna snap out of it and see my mom married to some other guy, he’s gonna snap out of it and find himself surrounded by guards and shackled and he’s not gonna understand any of it and it-- that-- I know there’s a chance he’ll remember everything but that’s almost... worse? He’ll look back on everything he did while cursed and know that yeah he was cursed but he hurt this woman he loved and-- and--”
The princess groans, flopping backwards on her bed. “Nothing feels like the right thing to do here. I know it’s not my decision anyways but I need to start learning how to handle these crazy situations like this and... I don’t know what I would do, I don’t know if I know how to even approach this.”

unscrxpted:
Ziva frowned as she listened, crossing her arms and biting her lip. Oh boy. So it was worse than Brynjolf had said. All he’d told her was that everything with Hans wasn’t what it seemed, that the trolls had had something to do with it - the trolls, he made sure to point out, that he’d never trusted in the first place - and that it was all… one big mess.
She sighed softly, going over and sitting beside Wynn, reaching up to run her hand through his hair to try to calm him. It’d always worked on her cousin. “It’s definitely… a lot.” She paused, thinking. “Honestly… makes me think of Agatha. The ghost girl from my uncle’s whole… adventure that brought attention to my family and what some of us can do. She was this… evil witch. Cursed Blithe Hollow and the seven judges who executed her, saying that she’d come back to destroy them.”
She took a deep breath. “My uncle… he was taught to be scared of her. She was the boogeyman, come to take Blithe Hollow and drag every citizen to Hell for what their ancestors did.” She looked at Wynn and shrugged. “Turns out… that wasn’t the full story. Aggie was just an eleven year old girl, scared out of her wits, because she was hanged for having the same curse that still got passed down through the generations… to me. It was really hard for Uncle Norman to accept that, ‘cause of what he’d been taught by his uncle. Aggie cursed the judges and their families in anger, sure, but she was a scared little girl. She didn’t really know what she was doing. It was out of her control. But she focused on that anger after she died, and it turned her into a vengeful… thing. Every year, a Prenderghast medium had to read from her book, and put that curse to sleep for another year, and we did that for three hundred years before someone actually paid attention to her… and got her to move on.”
She cleared her throat, shaking her head. “Sometimes the story isn’t what we think it is, because magic or raw emotion or some other thing got it twisted somewhere along the line. Wynn…” She shook her head again. “I… I can’t tell you that you need to understand it. But I can tell you that you’ve got someone who understands. Okay? I’m here. I’m always here. No matter what.” She nodded towards the foot of the bed. “So’s that ginger bastard.”
Mara blinked, taking a deep breath. Oh. Oh, dear. That was… That was much worse than Ziva had said it was. Okay. Okay, well, uh… She cleared her throat. “That’s- that’s very messy.” She paused, thinking, trying to come up with something. Oh, she wasn’t good at this.
“Well, my parents,” she sighed, picking at her nails, “when they had to make a statement to the kingdom about me, about what I am, they, uh… they just came out and said it, and they condemned Adam for the genocide order because… they’d lost friends because of it. But at the same time… they did make sure to point out that they never would’ve had me be part of the future of Deverre if it hadn’t been for the power play of that one unnamed ‘witness’ who set the whole thing off. So, you know, it looked a little bad, because they kept the secret until I was twelve, but… still. I think the best thing to do is make sure to- to just stress that your dad wasn’t aware of it.”
She frowned, grumbling. “Mm… maybe not. That could… That could bring bad attention to the trolls. Not that they shouldn’t have that bad attention. They made that bed, and they need to lie in it, but it could… have some repercussions…”
Wynn sighs, nodding, trying not to shake but starting to fall apart. This whole thing is just making him sick. This entire situation is drastically upsetting. And it’s barely getting started, he knows it, and that... almost bothers him more. He doesn’t know what he’s supposed to say or do in this situation.
He’s scared, really. And that bothers him a lot. He trembles a bit, sighing, running a hand through his hair, trying to take deep breaths... and failing.
Maelona sighs. “I just... I know my parents. I know they’re happy and I think everyone knows that, but there’s always gonna be someone who doubts the sincerity. Who doubts that my dad didn’t know. And-- and I know we can’t just leave Hans like that, I mean, he’s still considered a villain and... as far as I know, he still acts like one. But what’s gonna happen when we try to help him, what’s it going to mean for my family, I--”
She groans, running a hand through her hair. “I don’t know what’s gonna happen anymore and that... scares me, a lot.”

Ziva scoffed lightly, shaking her head. “Lots of fun. Gotta love secret passageways. Brynjolf thought it was the best idea, since I can’t teleport like he can.” She glared at the ghost, who was standing behind Wynn now. She grabbed the sweatshirt from him and finished getting herself dusted off before sighing. “Hey…” She grabbed his arm gently. “You don’t have to talk. You don’t. We can just sit here in silence if you want to.”
Mara squeaked again, transforming back into a person in a puff of pink smoke. She coughed a little, waving her hands to dispel the smoke. “Wynn. He-” She coughed again. “Hang on- that- I will never get used to that. Ahem. He texted Ziva, and she told me what I needed to know.”
Astrid grumbled a little. Of course. Brynjolf. Bringing that medium girl in. Astrid didn’t like her much; she was much too aggressive with Maelona for her liking.
Wynn sighs and shrugs. “He was probably right. I doubt mom and dad would be too happy to know I let someone in on the situation when they haven’t even processed it themselves yet.”
He sighs and frowns, shaking his head. “It’s just, it’s a lot to process.”
“So I guess you know what’s going on,” Maelona sighs, a bit confused. Wynn was a lot of things, but he’d never text someone about something like this, not currently. Not her brother. Something’s off about that. But she decides to push it aside. “It was, it was fine. It was normal. We went to visit the trolls since they’re daddy’s family and--”
“--I mean, nothing was weird at first. Mom and dad were being vague about political situations they were facing regarding some trade agreements or something and then, then 'Pabbie starts asking more questions--” Wynn’s pacing a bit, running a hand through his hair.
“--and of course they’re not answering anything he asks,” Maelona sighs, plopping on her bed. “They can’t, that’s really sensitive information, even I don’t know the ins and outs of the process with this particular dealing, but I guess they were getting tired of the non-answers, because suddenly--”
“--just completely out of the blue, someone yells at dad,” Wynn groans and buries his face in his hands.
“And he complains that dad’s shutting them out when they put too much work into getting him to where he is.” Maelona sighs. “That they...”
“...they, they got rid of ‘the other guy’, that it took so much magic to do it,” Wynn shakes his head as he drops on his bed. “And they ran from it. Of course. Just dump something that massive on all of us and leave. My parents are so torn up about it. Because they’re in love, they are, they’re happy with each other, but finding out the entire setup for them wasn’t in their control at all, that the trolls forced a change like that... and Maelona and I, I don’t even know if either of us know what to think. Hans was the monster in the closet when we were kids, right? Tried to behead our aunt after trying to let mom die of a frozen heart, trying to take absolute control of Arendelle, and... and none of it was his fault, apparently. I don’t know how we’re supposed to understand that.”
“...and honestly, I don’t know how we’re supposed to handle this news, officially. Now that we know about it, we can’t sit on it, we have to do something about this information. Burying it, it doesn’t do any good. Believe me, we’ve had that lesson in this family before,” Maelona sighs. “We can’t just sit on it and hope it goes away. An entire man’s personality and intentions were cursed to go dark to put the current king on the throne, even if he wasn’t aware of it, it was his family who did it and it looks so ugly no matter how we even try to approach it.”

unscrxpted:
Brynjolf smiled a little. Ziva. He liked her. She was a good person, and helpful for Prince Wynn. He went over to the prince, putting his hand on his shoulder for a moment, hoping he’d feel that cold, then going to the door, opening it slowly and then closing it. He’d understand. He was smart. The knight nodded to himself, then teleported off, going to find Ziva…
And she was very surprised when the tall, red-headed, very dead man had appeared in her dorm at AP. But she wasn’t going to argue. Her best friend needed her. Ziva followed Brynjolf through the secret corridors in the walls, keeping as quiet as she could, holding up her phone flashlight so she could see (though Brynjolf suggested a torch twice, and still struggled to understand the handheld light).
“You’re sure this goes straight to his room?” she asked for the fifth time. Brynjolf glanced at her. She sighed. “I know, I know, you know all the paths in and out of the castle and every room in it. Bite me, Bryn.” She bit her lip. “It’s weird, but I hope Mara found Maelona alright.” She stopped at what appeared to be a dead end, watching Brynjolf pull a well-hidden lever that opened the door. “Oh. Thanks.” She stepped out, taking a deep breath. “Wynn.”
Mara, meanwhile, had transformed into a bat and flitted around the outside of the castle, looking in the windows for her friend. She needed to find Maelona, and she knew Anna and Kristoff wouldn’t want her to know anything of the situation, but Maelona needed her. Thank God for Wynn.
That… was a strange thought for her to have. She banged against a window, having finally spotted her friend inside. She banged against it again, squeaking at her. Astrid looked up at the window, tilting her head. That vampire was so careless sometimes. Gerder had just cleaned those windows. The spirit looked at Maelona, then reached over, knocking over a picture to get her attention.
Wynn looks up at the arrival, sighing and getting up to grab something, ANYTHING to dust her off with, settling on a sweatshirt he was planning on having washed anyways. “Looks like you had fun getting here.”
He glances around blindly and just... nods, with a sigh, knowing no matter where the ghost is he’ll understand the meaning of it. Thank you.
Sighing weakly, he clears his throat and looks down at his best friend as he mostly finishes dusting her off, tears filling his eyes and breaking just a bit. “Ziva--”
Maelona sighs, still laying in bed... like she had been since she’d gotten home. Everything still weighing on her, a lot. This was a legacy now. Which is... beyond unfair. This is something that set so much about the royal family of Arendelle in motion and it was all orchestrated and played to put her dad in power, though unwittingly, and now...
She looks up when she hears one of her pictures fall, not that it bothers her, she’s used to that sort of stuff in here, but... wait, that’s a bat in her window. She knows that bat. “Mara!”
Getting up and rushing over, Maelona quickly opens the window and lets her in, shocked and largely confused. “What on earth are you doing here?”

Brynjolf lifted his chin slightly. Sometimes, he wanted to show himself. Actually speak to the prince. But sometimes he worried, about how to talk to him, about having to actively change his own words before he said them so he wouldn’t confuse the poor boy.
He shook his head, reaching over and scooting the chair over a bit, sighing.
Wynn sighs softly, nodding. Yeah, about what he expected. He sighs, picking at his hands a moment, trying to come up with how he wants to ask this. Because he knows perfectly well that there’s a reason the other has been with him all this time, he’s not an idiot.
“...can you get Ziva for me? And... and have her get Maelona’s best friend Mara? I’m sorry, I’m sure you think now’s the worst time to leave me, but... I need my best friend, and Maelona’s gonna need hers. I’d call her myself but I just... I don’t know how to talk about it, I don’t know how to tell her.”

unscrxpted:
Brynjolf the Merciful had lost track of how long he’d been in the castle. Somewhere after 148 years, 3 months, and 26 days, he’d stopped counting. But the one thing he always knew for certain? His duty was to the royal family of Arendelle, in life and in death. And he was determined to fulfill his duties as a knight.
So when Queen Anna and King Kristoff had had twins… well, Brynjolf had claimed the prince, while the former lady-in-waiting Astrid claimed the princess… and they both vigilantly watched over them, especially after they both went to school in Auradon.
And now… this. What was he supposed to do now? Though… he felt like he was helping more, now that Prince Wynn knew he was there.
He paused for a moment when Prince Wynn spoke. He was addressing him. He knew that. He looked around, then went over to the desk, knocking over a book and looking back at him.
Book. Wynn looks over in the... general direction, since he’s guessing blindly. This is where having a medium for a best friend comes in handy, he guesses.
When Ziva had finally told him about Brynjolf, it had been... strange, he’d be the first to admit. Acknowledging that what he’d so long chalked up to just being normal for the castle was actually... ghosts, acknowledging one had followed him, was weird, he’d admit. But he had gotten... kind of used to the idea, to the knowledge.
Speaking of. He needed his best friend. This whole convoluted set up was going to have to make do. Well, first, it’s probably better to establish what’s going on. He has a feeling he knows the answer to this question, but he asks it anyways. “...were you there earlier? With the trolls?”

Ziva held him tightly. She rocked him gently, instinctively humming a little lullaby her mom had taught her, trying to comfort him. “I’m here, bud. I’m here. I’ve got you.”
Everything her mom had taught her. Everything she learned while her mom was helping her. She had to hope it would do something.
Mara hummed a bit. “Hey, isn’t your aunt a… guardian of balance, or something? Maybe there’s something she can do to balance out the consequences of it all. I mean, she’s- she’s gotta be pretty powerful, more powerful than we really know.”
She shrugged, thinking. “And if we have to, I’m sure there’s someone with some really, really powerful magic that can be used to balance this out. The trolls need to face the consequences of their actions, somehow, because they’ve got to know that this was wrong.”
Wynn sighs and nods, shaking badly all the same. He clears his throat. “Thank you.”
It’s all he’s really got. Because Wynn isn’t sure he ever could have done this alone.
Maelona sighs, shrugging. “Maybe... I don’t know. Mom and dad’ll probably talk to her. Heck, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were going to send for her soon. Probably just deciding how to do things.”

unscrxpted:
Ziva sighed softly. She wasn’t sure how helpful she’d be for him through this. It was gonna be hard for him, really hard. And… she’d never been through it, her uncle had, and she was just going off of everything he’d told her and-
She was pretty useless anyway.
She hugged him tighter, just being quiet, just being there.
Brynjolf cleared his throat. “I will go patrol the corridors. I will alert His Highness and milady if I see anyone.”
“Okay,” Ziva said quietly. The ghost stepped through the wall. “Brynjolf’s gonna go stand in the hall to make sure nobody catches me here.”
Mara nodded slowly, taking a deep breath. She flopped down next to Maelona, humming. “The next right thing… is to break the curse, somehow. That’s all that can be done right now. And yeah, just like all other magic it comes with consequences, but the trolls were the ones that put this all in motion. They’re the ones who need to think long and hard on them.”
She turned over onto her side, looking at her friend and smiling softly. “It’ll be okay. I think that Hans would probably prefer that the curse be broken because… if you’re good, and you’re cursed to be evil, and there’s even a chance you’re still aware of what’s happening?” She shrugged. “That’s just torture.”
Wynn nods at what Ziva says, still hugging her and just slowly starting to cry silently, holding onto her. He doesn’t know what to do or where to begin. But he’s just grateful to have her there, right now.
Maelona sighs, looking at Mara, nodding slowly, understandingly, taking deep breaths and nodding again. “Okay. Okay. You’re right, I know you are.” She’s overthinking it. She needs to take it one step at a time. She knows she does. It’s hard because of just how insane this situation is to her.
Shaking her head, though, she sighs. “Mara, that’s just it, though. I don’t think the trolls are ever going to feel any repercussions for what happened. Not really. Sure, now they’re cut off from the royal family and everything to do with Arendelle, but... other than that, what’s someone gonna do to them? They clearly have extremely powerful magic-- Hans is still evil, he’s under an anti-magic barrier that should have broken it but it didn’t. What is someone gonna be ABLE to do to them? As much as I wish otherwise, they’re not gonna think on their actions, they’re just gonna be mad they got caught.”
