December 5th and 7th, 2024: Double congratulations are in order for two new geiko! Kohatsu (小はつ) of Shigemori (しげ森) in Miyagawa Cho and Haruchizu (櫻千鶴) of Tama (多麻) in Gion Kobu are celebrating their erikae! Kohatsu is the second imōto of Kofuku (小ふく), also of Shigemori, to have her erikae while Haruchizu, who is the imōto of Mamechizu (豆千鶴) of Nomura (野村), is the third of Mamechizu's imōto to have her erikae. Both women have been preparing for this day for a while and suit the geiko look so well! Kohatsu's ensemble features poems among rice sheaths with a golden karabana obi while Haruchizu's ensemble features genjikō, pine, and plum blossoms with a golden bamboo obi ^^ おめでとうさんどす小はつさんと櫻千鶴さん ^o^! Xtrail＆ATB1000で行く、青森サクラ旅！～後編　おやまめぐり～

今回の旅の目的はサクラを見る！だけではなく… 残雪の山岳を楽しむこと！これは春旅の醍醐味の一つかと思います。

支笏湖外輪山から始まり、羊蹄山、八甲田山、岩木山へ。 山によって周辺の地形違うし、植生も変わる。さらに眺める方向でも雰囲気が変化する… 見ていて飽きることなんてないですし、初めて見る山ばかりでもっと探索したい気持ちで溢れます！

今度は夏真っ盛りな青蒼とした景色もいいし、秋の黄金な田んぼをまったり旅するのもいいし、リンゴの香りに包まれるのもいいなあ…など、次回の旅の目的がふつふつ湧き上がります。

以前も思いましたが、旅に出ると更に旅に出たくなる！間違いありません。またXtrailの移動基地が非常に楽しく、今後の旅の形にバリエーションが増えたことを確信！

船旅の楽しさが再燃した私は、さらなる船旅の計画を立てたのでした…

Koinobori (鯉のぼり), meaning 'carp streamer' in Japanese, are carp-shaped windsocks traditionally flown in Japan to celebrate Tango no sekku (端午の節句). This traditional calendrical event is now designated as Children's Day (子供の日, Kodomo no hi), a national holiday in Japan.

What's In a Pocchiri? Part 18

On The Third Day of Fun I present... a new pocchiri! This one's a bit interesting for reasons you'll soon discover ^^

Image is my own. Materials: Silver and Enamel Motif(s): Crane, Pine Blossom, and Waves Owned By: Originally Kaida (貝田) in Gion Kobu Unlike most pocchiri that are made with precious stones, this one is made with enamel. The process to produce the image is quite labor intensive, and begins by making the outline of the motifs with silver wires. From there the enamel color is slowly built up with a brush. Once the color layer is as high as the top of the wire, it is fired in a kiln to bake. After that the piece is carefully polished down, first with a grinding wheel to make it one level and then with various grits of polishing compound, the piece is complete! It features a lovely crane flying over waves underneath a plum tree. This piece was originally owned by the Kaida (貝田) okiya in Gion Kobu, but upon their closure it was sold off. I later acquired it from someone who bought it from that sale and it now sits in my private collection, although I have displayed it in public as recently as this year! You can see it being worn by maiko Eriko (江梨子) of Kaida (貝田) in this old photograph here:
