A name to honor Ocean Day this past Monday! 磯兼 is read Isokane or rarely Isogane.

磯 is read いそ or キ. It means seashore or beach. The 石 radical means rock, and 幾 (which we touched on with soba the other day) contributes the reading キ.

兼 is read か.ねる or ケン. It means (to do something) concurrently. It can also mean beforehand or in advance.

I first learned 兼 as a radical from 嫌い [きらい], meaning to dislike (which is why 嫌 can also be read ケン). Interesting connection: the verb 兼ねる [かねる] can mean to serve in multiple functions/roles concurrently, OR it can mean to find something unpleasant, awkward, or painful to do. Which anyone who has ever worked in an understaffed organization can relate to.
