OBSERVE (( soulmate au 🥺 ))
@flappervcmp send “OBSERVE” for a mini-drabble of how MY MUSE sees and/or thinks about YOUR MUSE while they do something completely ordinary
he often finds himself wondering if she could feel it when his eyes are on her. ravenous. taking in every detail and committing them to memory. the way she smiles. the soft sound of her voice. all the obvious things that anyone would notice at a glance. it's not enough — he wants so much more than his usual detached indifference. he starts to see the less obvious things instead. the small furrow of her brow when she's deep in thought. the animated way she talks when she's passionate about something. the tilt of her chin and fire in her gaze in the middle of an argument. her hand reaching for his to pull him closer. it'd break him in two if it ever pushed him away. he won't apologize for his hunger, or make excuses. after a few centuries, he's just happy to have found her at all. he'll make their lunch in his kitchen and enjoy their lighthearted banter, soaking in as much of her presence as possible. cherish these little moments of normalcy. they were few and far between and he doesn't intend to waste a single one of them if he can avoid it. if she catches him looking he'll just tell her the truth that he can't resist: to him everything about her was beautiful.

he watches the vampire's back until he's alone, listening to make sure he'd gone. maybe next time he would offer a taste of demon blood. a dangerous gamble but if it works then isn't it worth it? gaze is drawn to the figure on the bed, moving closer at a small whimper. nightmares again, like he'd figured. a mental block should take care of them, and he raises one with a few muttered words. the sigils would hold for awhile and he had business to tend to before Elijah returned. messy business it turns out and he's left to watch over her once more, speaking aloud words he never thought he would say. he's always been one to own his flaws and shortcomings, using them as a warning to anyone who crossed him. to admit that some things are out of his control wounded his pride severely. he lets Elijah lead him from the room, a heavy sigh let out as he sank into the couch. wallowing in his despair will solve nothing. "i figured," he replies. the words a little ragged due to fatigue. why else would he still be here? caught in a battle he had no part in that was unlikely to end with a winner. he has a point, though. his knowledge of demons was from being surrounded by them most of his life while the ancient vampire didn't have the same advantage. a book tucked between the shelves pulls out with a small gesture from him, a tired nod given in it's direction. "read that, it will tell you most of what you need to know. preventions to keep them out, exorcisms, devil's traps; etc." another slight gesture and the glamour that kept the wards he'd placed from being seen were revealed, the symbols glowing faintly on every surface of the room. "even these which keeps us from being detected. you can learn how to make them and she knows how to activate them if i'm not here to do it myself."
@choserage aks: "you look tired. should i take over? // caleb i.e. keeping an eye on her" + blood stains his clothes and hands yet he pays no mind to either. it wasn't his and he hadn't stopped to change when he'd heard about her recent run-in with hunters. he'd gone to her to make sure she was alright to find her sleeping, though not peacefully. it's there that Elijah finds him, lingering in the doorway. "i'm failing her," he said softly. "i can keep her safe from demons and angels or other monsters but there's nothing i can do about the hunters." they won't stop until they're eradicated yet he'd made sure that nothing could kill them. he can't be here 24/7 and it ate him up inside. he's fully aware of the debt he owes Elijah and it's that which he addresses now. "thank you for being there."
The vampire nodded briefly. He was tired. He hadn't really slept for a few days and even if it wasn't absolutely necessary for vampires, he could feel the strength leaving him. Human blood helped, but not everything was possible to compensate for and Elijah didn't know the last time he'd been hunting... should he dare?
„Please call me if you have any problems. I can be back here right away.“ He and Caleb were whispering, so the man slowly rose from his chair and took one last look at Ana. Her breathing was calm, she was fast asleep. Then he left the room with Caleb. Elijah said goodbye and walked out of the door. He desperately needed blood.
It was like a thunderstorm that broke over him when he got back to the flat. Caleb was covered in blood, his clothes literally sticking to him. Since Ana was safe, even if her sleep was restless, the vampire took care of Caleb for the time being. The blood that was on him didn't belong to him, so that was secondary. The vampire helped the other to his feet and helped him to the sofa. It could be reupholstered if the blood didn't come out. He sank down next to him.
„She means something to me,“ Elijah confessed. When he was with Ana, it was nice. It was different. It helped him. But even he was powerless over what had happened here. Demons and other creatures that he first had to get to know. „You have to teach me the weaknesses of demons. If you're not here, I need to be able to take them out.“ His voice was quiet, but sounded serious.

“i know what kind of crazy i am, and this isn’t that kind of crazy.”
@ Caleb
@emburns | meme.
he wants to ask. in this morbidly curious burning desire to understand kind of way. countless times he's tried to follow his friend's train of thought, always without success. it baffles him. annoys him. amuses him. right now he's torn between poking fun at the vampire's expense or shrugging it off. they do that a lot. an nice routine to settle into that he doesn't have to put much effort into maintaining. "how can you tell?" a simple question, without mockery. "i didn't think there was much of a difference but if there is then i'll be sure to keep it in mind for later." after all, the whole reason they're friends is because they're a similar kind of crazy.

@mikaels0n-elijah-writing | cont. Elijah grinned slightly at Caleb's statement. He hadn't commented on his words, but that didn't matter. He probably didn't want to show himself vulnerable, as the two of them kept circling each other. Sniffing each other, you could say. They were acting together because of Ana and had become closer, but so far they had kept their distance. Elijah tried to bridge this distance, he wanted to know who he was travelling with and where it would take him. "As long as I've been on Earth, it's obvious that I know the feeling,“ he grinned in response. Every ancient being knew the feeling of finding out what they wanted and what they didn't want. What their deepest desires were. "But if you're secretive, so am I,“ he winked at him and leaned back, relaxed. This wasn't about power, but Elijah wouldn't pull any punches if the other didn't. "A wish against a wish.“ Simple, but effective. If you needed/wanted to get to know each other, you would have to reveal yourself.
he knew it was a reasonable response to give and yet he felt uneasy upon hearing it. that question hadn't been answered and he wasn't certain asking it would achieve that end. if the vampire and his sister are intimate then it wasn't truly any of his business and he did his best not to involve himself in her life too much. what right did he have to play big brother when he spent most of his time away from her? he could tell himself that it was to keep her safe all he wanted but when it really came down to it, it wasn't a fight he wished to have. in the end regardless of how badly he wanted to know, if the trouble she's found herself in had gotten worse he should trust in her ability to look after herself without his supervision. at best he could hope for a truce with Elijah, or something similar to it that wouldn't be on shaky ground for as long as the two were in each other's company. no hard feelings against him, he's simply unclear on what his motives were and only time will tell if they were malicious. he didn't think they were and that judgment would have to be enough for now. ideally they could even form a friendship. he'd never been good at those, though. "being secretive is one of the things demons are best at," he gives his own crooked grin. he had many talents but as far as being secretive, Ana held the trophy. he'd always been an open book kind of person, preferring to lay it all on the table than keep his cards hidden. that trait's served him well over the years, even saved his life. how far would it get him now? "wishes are dangerous things. i've seen them backfire too many times and all too quickly you find yourself with more than you bargained for if you aren't careful." he saw it every day in the deals he made. despite that, he decides to offer some kind of a peace offering. "if you could have anything, what would it be?"

" night and day, i dream of you. " (( for caleb, soulmate au! <3 ))
@flappervcmp | meme.
he's been doing the same thing for a long time. before he knew whose face it was, he'd seen it in his mind. in every dream and moment he'd been alive, he's seen it. committed the features to memory while wondering what her voice would sound like. if it was as soft and sweet as he'd imagined. every moment spent in hell he'd loathed the distance between them, left to wonder if he would ever meet the one he kept seeing. he'd even imagined what that first meeting would be like. if there would be a sense of recognition when their eyes met. would she know him too? would she want him? what would his first words to her be? there were so many questions that he couldn't find the answers to and there's still more that he hasn't even begun to ask. she'd haunted him when he was in the pit, left on his own to survive or die. he'd carried on imaginary conversations with an image of her, a silent promise made to himself that one day he would break out from his imprisonment to look for her. as long as he remained in Hell, that day wouldn't come and he was impatient for it to happen. he'd felt fear too, if he let it in at the idea that he wouldn't be able to. or that he'd be too late. those were his nightmares: that she would live a human life that he wouldn't be a part of and they would remain separated. he can't find the words to tell her how much he'd dreaded the thought that it would always be just a dream. facing her now and he can barely bring himself to touch her, some part of him clinging to the fear that she might reject him. it would truly destroy something in him if she did. he wouldn't blame her for it of course, all that it would do was reinforce what he already knew to be the truth. given all he's seen and done he doesn't deserve her, whether it was the vision of her he'd known for longer than she'd been alive or the reality of having her in his life now. flesh and blood and so close to him that it almost hurt. a different kind of pain settles in his chest as he hears her words and searches for a response to them that won't send her running from him. they sound sweeter than he'd ever believed possible and so is she, he thinks as he smiles. gaze tracing every contour of her face as she looks back at him and he's reluctant to look away from her. as if doing so will make her vanish.
"so have i. i've spent a few thousand years waiting to meet you and here we are." he cocks his head then, cracking a crooked smile. "it's funny, i feel like i should apologize. it must've been a shock when they turned out to be more than dreams."

he slips an arm around her shoulders, pulling her closer to him. debates how to respond and what she needed to hear from him, thinking back to his own desire to kill his father. he hadn't wrestled with the decision much, given all the demon had done. he won't feel any guilt when that day came. Payne wasn't him though, she had more humanity in her than most and he wanted to make sure she'd come out of it alright in the end. "it's hard to say what you should or shouldn't feel in this situation. it may be healthier to move on but with him still out there, it gets complicated." he wanted to be the one to end it for her. nearly did once. he'd kicked a few hornet's nests and they traded blows but ultimately he knew it wasn't something she'd be able to forgive him for if he took it that far. he offers a smile at the nickname. "well if that's what you need then i think we can fix that. i heard there's some hunters in town if you're really itching to kill something."
❛ what if it's myself telling me i shouldn't be feeling something. that i should move on ..... ❜ she murmurs softly. her head was a mess, it was on a given day but when it came to shit regarding her brother, she ended up tangled in knots. unable to know which way was up, and what she should be thinking. she just felt like a little girl. ❛ as much as i complain you help keep my mind level. and truly Cay, i'm not sure what i need. ither then to commit spousal murder ! ❜

" i have a habit of being rather direct. " - For Caleb
@mictlanreina | meme.
so does he at times. especially when it would be better to keep his mouth shut and his opinions to himself. it didn't stop him very often since he didn't really care what the reaction was. he'd rather wear his flaws on his sleeve than waste time trying to hide behind them. he had even less patience for excusing them yet it was a trait few seemed to possess. one reason among many why he dislikes humans. this one doesn't feel like the usual kind he came across and it does little to faze him. "same here. you don't make a lot of friends by doing that and i have plenty of enemies so if you're going to add yourself to that list then get in line."

Elijah smirked slightly at Caleb's words. He wouldn't have expected anything else. "Otherwise I'd be disappointed,"he replied, looking at the man's wounds from a distance. What had happened to make him look like that? Who had dared to get so close to him and for what reason exactly? Elijah had to know. "Are you alright or do you need healing?" His gaze fell on his face.
he was actually feeling pretty good about that last fight. the odds hadn't been in his favor but then again, they never were. naturally he'd expected as much and had used it to gain the upper hand, exactly as he'd been taught to. it was how he'd thrived in hell and occasionally he found himself missing the violence in a ring when all that mattered was who was going to come out the winner. he can't die so what does it matter if he was a bit reckless? fingertips lift to the small abrasion on his cheek, giving a hoarse laugh. the concern was appreciated yet wasted in this instance. "nah, i'll be fine. what's one more scar to add to my collection, right? it keeps things interesting and i hate being bored."

he doesn't usually frequent places like this, especially when he's working, but he had some time to kill until midnight. why not enjoy the atmosphere? it had to be better than what he was used to. he smiles, thinking about what exactly he's in the mood for right then. "well given the hour, a burger and a bourbon sounds good."
( @choserage liked for a starter from Camille O'Connell )

@mikaels0n-elijah A resigned expression was on his face as Elijah listened to the other man and looked directly at him. "Of course you did." He shook his head briefly. "I thought we were past the point of telling each other half-truths like that?" His voice sounded half amused.
attention fixed on the vampire, head cocked, considering. were they? while he knew Elijah was an acquaintance of Ana's, he can't say he knew all that much about him. a few interactions hardly counts as a friendship so maybe this was as good a time as any to bridge the gap. "force of habit." it's as close to an apology as the other's going to get. partial truths are something the twins lean on heavily, ana more so than him. "what do you want to know? i'll give you an honest answer to make up for it."

it was one of those nights when being around others wore at his nerves, the instinct to seek solace by himself leading him outside and away from the crowd. cigarette between two fingers, taking his time with it. his greeting, if it could be called that, was less than welcoming yet he didn’t protest the unexpected company. as long as he didn't have to be sociable he didn't really care whose company he found himself in. the silence doesn’t last very long and once again he has no objection to the offer, putting the cigarette out on the gravel beneath him. drinking was as good an activity as any and he gets to his feet with that thought in mind.
“bad mood or not, i’d never say no to a drink.”

throat clears. doesn't look at her directly because he can't. she wants more from him and he knows it but he doesn't know how to give her that. which hurts. he wanted to give her everything. he's always wanted to give her everything. but how can he when he has nothing to offer? just words. and those weren't enough. "i don't expect it to mean much but.." a pause. tries not to fumble because he needs to say this. she needs to hear it. to know without a doubt that it was the truth. "you're the best part of coming back."
