Dani Dennison for the character ask

Favorite thing about them: She's likable in general: a cute, feisty, brave little girl, sometimes bratty in a funny way, yet sweet at heart.

Least favorite thing about them: How much she enjoys embarrassing her brother, though that's typical of a mischievous 8-year-old.

Three things I have in common with them:

Random headcanon: She doesn't actually know what the word "virgin" means. Until the events of the movie, she's only heard the word applied to the Virgin Mary, with no definition. She just knows that whatever it is, Max is one, and he's embarrassed about that fact, which is why she keeps bringing it up to tease him.

Unpopular opinion: I don't think I have one.

Description

Thackery Binx’s story begins many many years ago, when the Sanderson sisters first began to wreak havoc. Thackery was almost always in charge of taking care of his younger sister, Emily, at the time, but one night she had been kidnapped by the witches while under his care. When he tried to follow them to save her, the witches casted a terrible curse on him that turned him into a talking black cat! His sister was killed that terrible night thanks to the Sandersons, and the black cat spent years and years near the old Sanderson house, protecting the black flame candle to make sure the evil women didn’t come back. It wasn’t until many years later that the candle was lit by a teen who snuck in with 2 others, and initially, Binx’s protective instincts came out, as he wanted nothing but to make sure the Sandersons were to never return. He was too late to stop Max Dennison from lighting the candle, but he was able to be there to help make sure nothing bad happened to Max, Allison, or little Dani. In the end, they were able to barely scrape by and survive, and afterwards, Binx’s curse seemed to be somewhat lifted. His human form was returned, and at first he was ecstatic! He thought he was finally free, but a few weeks later, the night before the full moon, he returned to his cat form, and soon became a human again once the full moon had passed. Since then, Binx has adjusted to the new ways of the curse, being able to somewhat live a normal life and schedule things around the full moon. He still feels protective over Allison, Max and especially Dani, and has been keeping a careful eye out for anymore witches getting in their way.

Headcanons

- Since he was cursed, Binx realized that he no longer ages, which grows more and more depressing as time goes on. It makes it hard for him to even think about settling down and dating, especially with his cat form getting in the way once a month.

- He absolutely hates magic and everything about it. He doesn’t trust anyone who possesses it and tries to stay clear of it, but it always seems to follow him somehow.

- It’s unfortunate, because he wants the curse to be fully broken, because becoming a cat like he does is very, very inconvenient. However, he realized that after the curse changed, he’s been able to see Emily’s spirit whenever he’s a cat! It gives him more time with her, even if she’s no longer alive. He isn’t sure he’d be ready to fully say goodbye to her if the curse were to be fully lifted — if he was no longer a cat, he’d no longer be able to see her again.

- The reason he’s so protective of Dani is because she reminds him of his sister. He doesn’t think Max keeps a close enough eye on her, so he takes on the extra responsibility of making sure Dani is safe.

- He often goes by Binx now. It’s typically only Emily who still calls him Thackery

- He’s very hyper aware of the moon phases for his own sanity, since he has to plan everything around the full moon

- Binx’s experience as a cat is sometimes hard to recall once he’s back in his human form. It all feels like a weird, foggy dream, only able to recall bits and pieces of what happened at times

- Binx isn’t sure if cats just recognize him, or if they sense the magic that cursed him to be a cat, but even when he isn’t in cat form, cats will seem to follow him. He refuses to have a pet cat, especially since he’s hardly home enough to take care of one, but he does pet any strays that come by or will give them some food and water. 

- Hardly anyone knows about his curse besides Dani, Max and Allison. He’s embarrassed about it, and it is a constant reminder that he failed Emily. Even if he’s grateful to be able to see her spirit while he’s a cat, it doesn’t make the overall circumstances any better

- Either has dreams about magic and curses, Emily, or about himself in cat form. He swears the witches drove him to complete madness from the curse

- Basically a protective, cautious, sneaky cat detective that hates magic. But underneath that, when able to let his guard down and be normal for once, he can be funny, sarcastic and fun to be around. After all these years, though, Binx still doesn’t really know who he is or where he belongs.

Description

Although Max was not thrilled to move to Destiny Isle as a teenager, it eventually became a place he grew to love as he settled in and created a family of his own here. He and his sister moved to the isle one Halloween and he wasn’t all that thrilled about the magical aspects they’d heard about — to him, it was just a bunch of hocus pocus. He was proven wrong to be a skeptic though when the virgin lit the black flame candle and brought back the Sanderson Sisters, a trio of witches who had wreaked havoc in the area hundreds of years ago. With the help of the girl of his dreams and a cursed talking black cat, he and Dani survived the ordeal and even somewhat lifted Thackery Binx’s curse, and Max is forever grateful that the traumatic experience brought him closer to his future wife Allison.

He’d never met someone like her and he was head over heels from day one. His disinterest in the isle faded rather quickly and it didn’t take long for the two to become official. It may have seemed cheesy but they became high school sweethearts, and the two continued building a life together after high school. They waited to eventually get married until after finishing their bachelor degrees, Max going to school for teaching history and Allison choosing law school, and it was once Allison finished law school two years later that they had their daughter, Poppy. With Allison so career focused and having worked so hard on her law degree, Max was okay with stepping down to part time teaching in order to spend more time raising their daughter. He hardly believes sometimes how much his life has changed since moving here as the annoyed and grumpy teen that was new to the isle, but he is grateful for the way that things have turned out.

Headcanons

Drumming is still one of Max’s passions to this day but he hasn’t had as much time to do so after becoming a father. Thankfully he still has time here and there to give drumming lessons occasionally when Dani or Binx are able to step in and babysit.

He can still be somewhat of a skeptic when it comes to magic but he’s definitely much better about it than he was back then. He was the one who warned binx to be careful when binx approached him for advice about dating a witch, but he’s glad that it turned out to be a positive experience for him in the end 

Still very protective of Dani even though she’s grown up now but also still thinks she can be annoying as hell too

Yes he did lose his virginity to Allison 

He loves being a dad. A part of him wants him and Allison to have another kid (he wants to try for a boy next) but he knows that’s a big ask with how much Allison works. He’s content either way on whether they only have Poppy or if they try for another child

Headcanons:

The eldest of the Sanderson sisters, Winifred took looking after her younger sisters very seriously, especially after their mother passed away and their father spent most of his time working. Though she was about to marry John Pritchett the moment she turned sixteen, looking after Mary and Sarah had always been much more important to her than fulfilling what the church wanted of her. That, and John was kind of ugly, anyway. Her real sights had been set on one Billy Butcherson, but Winifred doesn't like to discuss how that ended. She's still bitter about it to this day.

Their happened-upon witch mother came at a time when the girls had needed her the most: the Sanderson sisters had been exiled, and they were looking for a new home to call their own. Winifred felt some of the responsibility come off her for the first time in her life, and it was the safety with their coven that kept the sisters safe for decades.

Emily Binx had been a necessary sacrifice for them to stay alive, even if the girl had led to their first death. Winnie doesn't really regret what happened to the girl--she was better off dead than alive, anyway, in the kind of society they were raised in. Thackery had been sacrificed as more of a personal vendetta, a joke, really, though Winifred only slightly regrets this after how much annoyance he'd caused them a few decades ago.

The Dennisons and their little blonde friend had been the sisters' only hope of staying alive after they were brought back one Halloween night not too long ago. Though he'd brought them back from the dead, Max had also been the one who'd sent them back to the grave, and that's something Winnie won't soon forget. She blames him, and the stupidity of her sisters, for the failure that had been that particular Halloween. Winifred would've had it all handled had it not been for how miserably her sisters had failed and the leap of an adjustment to modern technology the trio had had to make.

Though she largely considers her encounter with the Dennisons and Allison a failure, one good thing did come out of it: Winnie had managed to put a curse on the two girls before she'd been burst into smithereens. Allison and Dani would become witches one day, once Winifred came back to life. Call it blind luck, or belief in herself, but Winnie had a feeling she'd be back, and so too would the powers she'd placed on the two girls when they were children.

It was only recently that Winnie had been brought back to join her sisters beyond the grave again. Once the borders to Echo Isle had opened, something had shifted, letting the possibility for magic as strong as the sisters' combined to thrive. It was once the border opened that Winifred found herself Earth-side again, rising from the cemetery where the Dennisons had banished her thirty years ago. It's only been a few weeks, and she's still getting used to how much has changed from the last time she'd appeared until now. Now that she's back on the island, Winnie has focused all of her efforts on finding her sisters, though it's quite difficult when she doesn't own any of the modern technology to contact them. She did hear about some big festival a few weeks ago though, from the newspapers, and she's hoping they might come across each other at something like that soon. Otherwise, she'll continue the search until she's reunited with them and her spellbook.

It's not in the same way as Sarah's, but Winnie's singing voice can, and does, charm people. She's found that her audience can essentially react however she'd like them to when she's performing. Though she's only publicly performed twice since she was killed the first time, Winnie's working on honing in on her hypnosis power through declaring herself a singer. It would be easy to make a living as a performer if she could simply hex all of her audience to come back the next time she sings. It seems the sisters can't make it far these days without a steady paycheck, and Winnie has a feeling neither of her sisters will be the one to step up and bring home the bank for them.

dani was born and raised, for the first eight years of her life at least, in california. and she loved it there. but being young, she was able to bounce back with a move like that.

in fact, she loved the town that they moved to. knowing all of the spooky history for the eight year old just made it even more fun for her, especially because she was so interested in it all.

even if it scared her, which she’d never have admitted out loud.

dani had her older brother max, who she loved to annoy more than anything else. the two of them were always butting heads, but she loved him more than anything too.

on that first halloween in salem, they went trick or treating around the new town and everything seemed like it was going to be fine. and then the two dennison siblings along with max’s crush allison watts went off to the old sanderson house.

dani was the first to say that she was afraid of it, as she had heard all the stories. but she wasn’t about to just run off on her own in a new city and on halloween of all times. she made her brother make a promise to her and figured it would all work out.

and it might have. if max had believed in the tales, if he hadn’t lit the black flame candle. and set them off on an adventure ( a crazy one ) that she never thought possible.

well, she was eight at the time. she kind of thought anything might be possible. but looking back on it she really didn’t think that anything like this was entirely possible at all.

the group got into a lot of trouble, and their own parents didn’t believe them when they came forward about everything. but it happened. and they eventually moved on from it all.

dani still wished that binx the cat was alright, but she knew that he was in a better place. and in fact, it wound up being something that helped her. she convinced her parents to get her a cat shortly after all of everything happened.

after everything that happened, dani decided that she was going to be the best person she could be and focus on school and everything. though she did get into some trouble here and there with bits of information and things she learned about other local folk legends. she couldn’t stay away from town things.

she’s currently working at the movie theater here, and also attending school to study film.

Dani took up light magic during her early teenage years. Something that Allison had helped her get into. While Dani was placed in charge of taking care of Book, she never dares to open it. In fear that it could potentially alert the Sanderson Sisters and bring them back from the dead. Her decision to practice light magic stems from her fear of the sisters, something that could help in combat should they ever come back. Something that can protect the ones she loves.

Character description

Max has had to deal with a lot of different changes in his life over the years, none of which were under his control. After moving from his home town to New Salem, he felt his personality shift — he was suddenly more angry and alone, and the close relationship he had with his younger sister no longer felt the same. It wasn’t Dani’s fault of course, and he knew he shouldn’t take it out on her, but he couldn’t help it. Luckily, he was able to adjust, with the help of Dani and Allison. Though he got kind of picked on when he first moved, meeting Allison made it all worth it. It was basically like love at first sight, and although she didn’t seem very interested at first, he was determined to make her his. That Halloween he got rejected by Allison though, everything changed again. The three of them were almost killed by a trio of witches, but thanks to Allison and Thackery Binx, they survived the chaos. This new group of friends made Max feel less alone in New Salem, and he and Dani were finally rekindling their sibling-dynamic that they once shared. He had his family life together, new friendships, and finally got the girl. It all seemed to be going just as planned, especially as he got to major in what he loved in college, but then another change occurred, one he can now hardly remember. He could remember how he first fell in love with Allison, how happy she made him when he looked at her, but he couldn’t remember much else. He even forgot about how close he and Dani became again, and soon it all fell apart again. He’s almost the same as he was when they first moved to New Salem, alone and angry at the world, but he still tries to be a good brother regardless. Now, he isn’t sure what he’s supposed to do with himself, single and struggling with himself.

Headcanons

- Despite that he barely remembers his and Allison’s relationship, he’s still heartbroken over the breakup. He knows deep down that he had strong feelings for her, but he’s made sure to give her space and not seem desperate. The last thing he wants is to look like he can’t survive without her.

- He has no idea what the hell is going on with Dani. He doesn’t remember her ever being so paranoid and … weird. He wishes she would chill out and stop trying to be so protective — that’s supposed to be his job, after all.

- He has very little memory of Thackery Binx and how they became good friends. His face seems familiar, but that’s about it. It confuses Max that Dani is pretty close with him, but when he asks, she just brings up magic and all kinds of hocus pocus that Max wants nothing to do with.

- Max really misses being in a band. It’s cool to perform with others at restaurants, but it’s not the same as creating music with a group of people you enjoy being around. With the way things have been going south for him lately, he almost wants to give up trying with his music altogether, but it’s kind of all he has going for him right now.

- He tries not to be so pessimistic, but sometimes he can’t help it. It seems like everywhere he looks, something is going wrong, and a lot of it he blames on himself. 

- ESTP

Winifred Sanderson for the character ask

Favorite thing about them: Her sheer flamboyance and zest for her wicked deeds, and her perfect blend of comedy and genuine dangerousness. She's a villain I love to hate.

Least favorite thing about them: Well, she is an evil, child-murdering witch, and she abuses her sisters too.

On a meta level, I might have some concerns about a well-known Jewish actress (who's very "Jewish looking" too, with her frizzy red hair and big nose) playing a witch whose particular brand of evil, sucking out children's life force in a magic ritual, has some obvious parallels with the blood libel legend. But of course the parallels between antisemitic stereotypes and witch stereotypes are common throughout all media with witches. Besides, the character isn't Jewish, she's from a Puritan village in colonial Massachusetts, and if Bette Midler had no problem playing the role (in fact she calls it her all-time favorite role), why should anyone else object?

Three things I have in common with them:

*I like to sing and perform.

*I'm sensitive to rude remarks about my looks.

*I like Halloween.

Three things I don't have in common with them:

*I don't have red hair.

*I've never murdered anyone.

*I don't have any sisters.

Her curse just before being hanged:

When she sees a school for the first time, judging by its appearance and its smell of children:

"It is a prison for children!"

About Dani calling her "ugly":

"She really hurt my feelings... She doesn't even know me! You know, I always wanted a child, and now I think I'll have one... on toast!"

When she brings Billy Butcherson back as a zombie:

"Unfaithful lover, long since dead, deep asleep in thy wormy bed! Wiggle thy toes! Open thine eyes! Twist thy fingers toward the skies! Life is sweet, be not shy! On thy feet! So sayeth I!"

In response to being told "Go to hell!":

And as a bonus, from the Hocus Pocus Villains Spelltacular show at Walt Disney World, when she laments that she and her sisters don't have any friends, and Sarah says "We're friends":

Random headcanon: During the 300 years she and her sisters spent in hell after their execution, she met several of the classic Disney villains (who of course were killed in their own stories), like Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Ursula, Gaston, Scar, and Frollo. Her interactions with them were very interesting.

Unpopular opinion: I'll say the same thing I did about her sisters. I wish the Boo to You Halloween Parade at Walt Disney World had only dressed Minnie Mouse as Winifred for the 30th anniversary of Hocus Pocus in 2023. Ditto for Clarabelle Cow as Mary and Daisy Duck as Sarah. I wish they hadn't kept it for this year's parade too. Hocus Pocus is really a movie for middle schoolers and older, not for the little kids Minnie and friends appeal to the most. The costume does look cute on Minnie, but still.

Headcanons:

Dani has always been the kind of kid to be into magical shit. She used to dress up as a witch when she was younger on the daily, not just on her favorite holiday, Halloween. Her mom bought into the obsession, playing along with Dani pretending to cast spells and make potions when she was a child. Never had it occurred to her that there might be a reason why she had an interest in magic beyond just thinking they were cool.

Having an older brother made Dani a little rough around the edges. She’s a little snarky and has a dry sense of humor, but the attitude really came from a place of self-defense. Growing up and thinking magical shit that could be considered a little weird made Dani hold it close to the heart, and Max teasing her about it didn’t really help. Now it’s just become part of her personality and after the shit with the witches happened, she can’t really shake it.

Though it was the beginning of absolute chaos, the Halloween night she shared with Max and Alli when they woke the Sandersons was one of the best nights of her life. It was terrifying but also exhilarating, and it brought her closer to both Max and Allison before all of their memories were wiped. It proved to her that witches and all the things she’d been obsessed with as a child really were real, and that maybe all of the crazy ideas she’d had weren’t all that crazy.

Thackery has been a lifesaver, quite literally, since the fog happened. He’s been the only person Dani’s confided in about her sudden powers coming to life and whatever is going on with the Sandersons now. They’ve both seemed to fall under the category of people the sisters have burned, whether they meant to or not, on the way to the top of New Salem. She’s been trying to figure out what to do with the borders opening and Winifred rising to power, and Thackery’s the only person she can begin to make a plan with.

It’s killing Dani to not be able to talk to Max about her powers and what happened with the fog. She knows he was a lot happier back when he was with Allison. Though they’d always had a bit of a strained relationship since moving back to New Salem, the fog made it worse. Dani misses Max more than anything, but she can’t take trying to explain it again and him looking at her like she was insane. 

She’s been trying to drop hints to Allison wherever she can, but it’s hard. Dani’s not sure how to be subtle about things while also remaining anonymous, but she knows Allison had an interest in witches and stuff before their run in with the Sandersons, and maybe the right bit of information will spark something in her. 

Acts like she can’t stand Max’s music but actually thinks he’s pretty good as a drummer. Dani listens to his band’s music on her phone and begrudgingly shows up to any shows for “moral support”, but knows the words to every song.

Halloween used to be her favorite holiday, but now, Dani dreads it. She’s terrified of something like the night they woke up the witches happening again, so she stays home and tries to eat candy alone until midnight hits.

Dani enrolled in Amity Park University with the offer for kids from New Salem to join. She took a gap year after high school since her mental health went down the drain after the fog. She’s studying political science to try and figure out how legal it is for Winifred to be in office without actually ever be elected. Dani’s trying to dive into her schoolwork to distract her from thinking about what could happen with the borders open too much.

HC: Although dragging Max is Allison's favourite hobby and spectator sport, she made a deal with Dani that at the Shaws' Christmas Party (to which the Dennisons were all invited), the younger girl was not say anything too awful because "dammit, Dani, I need them to like him."
