Obi-Wan Kenobi in "Attack of the Clones" is incredible. He's bonkers. He jumps out a skyscraper window onto an assassin droid after he specifically told Anakin that they weren't going to investigate. Anakin saves him from a long fall by showing up with a speeder and Obi-Wan just chides him for being late as banter. Anakin outright sincerely says, "You're the closest thing I have to a father," while they walk into a nightclub and Obi-Wan distantly replies, "Then why don't you listen to me more?" and then goes to drink on the job. He mind tricks a random drug dealer into going home to rethink their life. Obi-Wan shows up to Kamino looking like a wet cat and confusedly goes along with the Kaminoans as they show off the clone army that he definitely did not order, and at no point does Obi-Wan or any of the other Jedi seriously bring up the fact that this is a fucking slave army. Anakin gets brought into the arena to join Obi-Wan in being executed by wild animals and Obi-Wan just acts like this is just another Space Tuesday for him and his padawan.
If we're going by the first two prequel trilogy films alone, then it's kind of like, "Yeah, Anakin obviously has a LOT of issues that are not necessarily Obi-Wan's fault, but wow, it kind of looks like Obi-Wan is NOT helping. Why did the Jedi Council let this man raise a child???" Like, sure, let's let the traumatized 20-something raise a traumatized 9-year-old, what could go wrong? Well, Obi-Wan is drinking on the job, apparently, possibly to ignore the fact that Anakin called him his dad. (Again? Doesn't seem like this is the first time!) And Anakin is, uh, immediately making the senator he's bodyguarding soothe and manage his upset emotions for him, before he then repeatedly pressures her into a secret relationship with him despite multiple refusals on her part. So, you know, it could be worse!
#it is going to get worse#I personally find anidala in this movie uncomfortable as hell at best; I don't really ship it anyway and it is NOT written well here#girl you've known this 19yo for like a week and he just slaughtered an entire village including children PLEASE do better for yourself#tossawary star wars#obi wan kenobi#anakin skywalker#padme amidala#spoilers#violence

i wish obi-wan would've actually gone harder with the emotional neglect. his response to "you're the closest thing i have to a father" was not enough he should've said "ew!"
#he didnt go in with the emotional neglect at all unfortunately#he should've tho. anakin deserved it <3

latest dream idea: what if anakin and obi-wan swapped origins? kinda, anyway (this is the kind of thing i'm honestly surprised i haven't already mused on to death, tbh)
the age gap was smaller - anakin was still younger, maybe 10, but obi-wan was like 15 (in canon obi-wan is what, 24? 25 when he meets nine-year-old anakin? so that's 14/15 years rather than like. 5). ("you're the closest thing i have to a father" says anakin. "then why don't you listen to me??" asks frustrated teen parent obi-wan lol oh no.) ANYWAY they weren't on tatooine either, but a similarly lawless place and there was still racing of some type and obi-wan was a racer. also no shmi 😒 i wonder if she was still anakin's mom and he'd just been found earlier?? could be. don't remember that part
the main thing i remember is obi-wan being all alone in this scary place, effectively faking an exit when he was otherwise going to be... idk, beat up i think? and i was briefly in qui-gon's place while following where he'd really gone and telling him quietly where to find me later. and a definite determination to save him
which i understand, as someone who loves obi-wan dearly, but idk what your thought process is here, qui-gon! bc if nine was too old i think everyone is going to think you have legit lost your mind walking in with someone halfway through his teens! and he ain't even a candidate for chosen one! there's defiance and then there's delusion, and then there's whatever this is
the dream ended before that became relevant, tho. so now i get to chew on a slightly more plausible swap... 🤔
#it's Very Weird thinking about shmi's role in all this when she and obi-wan are my otp plank 😅#(it's not a ship. it's just me floating amidst much bigger ships. for all i know i will always be alone. this idea goes down with me. etc#(i've called it a rowboat before but nah. more than one person fits in a rowboat. i am alone on this scrap of wood#(also yeah. there's an age difference. but at least they're both ADULTS... with obidala she's a TEENAGER. NOPE. i'm not about that)#anyway! it was a very grey planet. tatooine-esque in that the buildings were all like. clay? but it was perpetually overcast. unfriendly#very ~aesthetic~ but unfriendly. chainlink fences around abandoned lots (obi-wan lived in one) and large crowds and hoods everywhere#anyway#this sure was a post#abbie needs a twitter#abbie needs a dream journal#obi wan kenobi#you pierce my soul#star wars#my favorite#movies

❄️☔
❄️ Share a snippet from a WIP of your choosing:
From a short upcoming fic titled “A Break in Protocol”
They debrief while still on the ground, his brothers bustling around them to get everything back to the ship. Cody stands at his Jedi’s side and watches him out of the corner of his eye, noticing the things that are likely imperceptible to others, the slight droop of his shoulders, the tightness of his jaw, the stiff way he is holding his left arm, and the weight he has shifted to his left leg. The dark red smeared through his beard will look like little more than shadows on the holo, but Cody can see the cut oozing blood under his disheveled hair, the evidence of it hastily wiped away before the call.
His brothers are reduced to numbers as their campaign is discussed by beings dressed in elaborate finery who are speaking from their plush offices half a galaxy away. They are not in any danger, and the closest most of them have ever gotten to a battlefield is an argument in the Senate. The admiralty is no better. Rather than talking of them like they’re expensive meat covered droids like the senators, they talk about them like they’re less than, less than their nat born officers, less than any citizen, less than what they want. Cody doesn’t understand how they can be the last when all they do is die in droves for a Republic that doesn’t give a damn about them.
It usually makes him angry, but after losing so many over the last two weeks, it just leaves him feeling cold and empty inside. He feels small, like a cadet back on Kamino who has just learned that decommissioning means he’ll never see his batch mate again. He sees the general’s tired blue eyes flick to him for a heartbeat, and he knows the Force has betrayed him. He’ll plead exhaustion and say he'll be fine after a good night’s rest. It’s the same lie Obi-Wan always tells him after ugly campaigns where it feels like the dead outnumber the living.
☔Is there a fic concept you have that you'd like to just explain and share because you're not sure you'll ever write it? If so, what is it?
I wrote a few snippets of a fic about Prince Cody having to deal with many suitors invited to the palace all at once by his father, one of them being Obi-Wan who was a minor noble from a neighboring kingdom. Cody snuck out of one of the events in palace guard armor and ran into Obi-Wan who had ditched the gathering in favor of going to the library. Cody starts running into him as the palace guard because Obi-Wan has shown little interest in him as the prince, and they quickly fall for one another. In the end there’s an assassination attempt on Cody, and Obi-Wan stops it and is surprised when he wakes up to find the prince at his side rather than his knight.
Too much research required and too many other WIPs right now, but it is a fun idea!

Late Night Studies [Closed]
@skywalkerxanakin [Continued]
"Honestly, Anakin, though I do miss Qui-Gon, the closest thing I've had to a father since mine died before I was born, I was sad, but I was not angry; Obi-Wan had contacted me before he left Naboo and told me what happened, that all of Qui-Gons actions were because he sensed you were different and would be a great addition to the Jedi and since we were the same age, we'd get along, I would never blame you for that. If it wasn't for Qui-Gon, we would've never met, and I wouldn't really have a best friend, more like a brother."
Ellis shrugged. "I don't know, but you're my best friend, and I wouldn't trade you for anything. We're going to be the most powerful Jedi to ever live and we're going to take down the Sith and get rid of the fear and chaos they pose to the galaxy"
She nodded. "Like I said, he was the closest I ever got to a father, I mean, it's nice that I have Master Windu, but our relationship is more mentor and student, not father and daughter. I don't think I will ever get over that, but it's life; we're born, we live, and...we die. Life is cruel if you think about it."

Totally understand if you don't like the following, it's not for everyone...
Sooo I was thinking about Obi Wan, after Order 66 and escaping with him to his homeplanet and building a life together. And I don't know why, but an established, domesticated Obi Wan (oof how this sounds but I hope you get what I mean) becoming a father and having a kid with you, or more with you and a pet.
I think this would suit domesticated Obi Wan so well... Just sending this to you because I love how you answer asks! I hope you're doing well. 🫶
🌼🌸💛 !
this is so lovely 💫 !
hope you are doing well also & sorry for just rambling here ! hope this was ok.
I think obi wan would be a wonderful father to a child, a foundling, or even a pet ! he definitely seems like a kind, caring, & compassionate person. he will always be a loving partner & friend, that will keep all those closest to his heart safe & protected.
I imagine that this life will come with some challenges too ( grief, & processing many different emotions, new ways of living post order 66 ) but with time, & hope most of all - in true star wars fashion, I truly believe that his healing ( & his partner's ) will come gradually.
& maybe that healing happens from nurturing something, whether that be another person or thing. something sentimental & true that he can always hold onto in his heart. a loving relationship, a family, plants, a pet, or a farm. obi wan building something with his hands, a structure or toys, or even cooking ! maybe he finds comfort in helping others, going to the market for older neighbors, preparing meals for the both of you to try & feeding each other, delivering food or supplies to those in need, or filling his time by teaching the children & watching over them from the nearby town.
I always picture him meditating or reading, finding peace in ways that make sense for him. Glasses perched on the tip of his nose. A simple hug given from behind while he works in the home you've made together. Kisses on both of his cheeks & forehead. Laying with one another with sleepy eyes after the day is finally done. A pet curling up beside you both for some extra snuggles ! A calm child or foundling dreaming sweet thoughts in the next room.
Watching the sunrise or go down. Wishing on the moon when things feel tough. Finding solace in all of life's more simple pleasures. 🌙💕

[Well he literally said "You were my brother, Anakin. I loved you!" so more than misunderstanding him it's not even watching the movie @paincake7]
Honestly I think a lot of people watch that (and hear Anakin say "you're the closest thing I have to a father") and they still misunderstand - because they fundamentally misunderstand how Jedi kinship and relationships work. People see Jedi referring to each other as 'brother' 'sisters' 'father' etc and they put their own IRL understandings of the term onto them. I have a brother and a sister but, for better or worse, they are not the closest people to my heart. Many people have complicated relationships with their parents/parental figures.
So they see these characters referring to each other as family, and they assume that they understand the terms as they/we do. BUT THEY DON'T!!!!
Jedi are raised communally! Calling each other Brother or Sister does not mean they see each other as related! ANAKIN NEVER HAD A FATHER, HE WAS A SLAVE, AND THEN JOINED THE JEDI, DO YOU THINK HE SHARES OUR UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT A FATHER IS?? (CONSIDERING HE ALSO DE-HANDED HIS OWN SON??)
In some ways, I think a better way to approach Star Wars would be the way people approach LOTR. Fans 'understand' that Tolkien's works are 'translations' of Middle Earth languages - the characters may have actually said something else, but we are getting their closest approximate in whatever language we're reading. I think we need to understand the Jedi like that - we 'hear' or understand their closest approximation for the bonds, emotions, and life they experience. Obi-Wan calling Anakin his 'brother' does not mean the same thing as me calling my brother 'brother.' Anakin calling Obi-Wan 'the closest thing to a father' is not the same as me calling my dad 'dad'. These are terms of endearment, appreciation, kinship and love, but they DO NOT mean the same thing as they do to US or in our universe.
So many people watch the movies, see these lines, and their misunderstanding of Anakin and Obi-Wan's relationship is really stemming from their misunderstanding of the Jedi as a whole
honestly even if you don’t ship obikin, which is fine, you have to understand that anakin is obiwan’s BEST FRIEND. Not quinlan, not Cody, not satine. It’s ANAKIN!!! They are two halves of a whole warrior. Master and apprentice. They’re besties. Even if your reading of them isn’t romantic, if you try to say that obiwan held anyone else, or any other friend, higher or closer to his heart… you fundamentally misunderstand him and the way he sees himself in relation to others
#sorry to go off but im always thinking of jedi kinship and relationships#like i think its so interesting and like in fic i usually... dont dive into it or utilize it just cuz thats not the main focus lol#m

obi-wan: wow. this is hard. this kid was supposed to have qui gon as his teacher. he would have done such a better job with this.
*dreamy transition to a lifetime where qui gon is anakin's teacher*
--
qui gon: *seeing anakin do stuff and getting dooku monitoring flashbacks* i miss leaving the last kid in the car
--
anakin: you're the closest thing i've ever had to a father
qui gon: the force is like all of our fathers
anakin: oh, okay... i meant that i love you, though
qui gon: yes, we are all beloved by the force
anakin: that's a nice thought, master. again, i meant you, though. and me.
qui gon: :) yes. come, anakin, we musn't be side-tracked and forget why we're here
anakin: oh, okay...
--
anakin: hello, master kenobi. i was looking for you. could i ask you a question?
obi-wan: for me? alright, what is it, then
anakin: you were master qui gon's student before me, right? was it hard for you...?
obi-wan: :) I'm not sure what you mean
anakin: did you ever feel... sad about him...? he is very kind, but... i've been told not to dwell on it... did you have a hard time with that?
obi-wan: :) yes, but you can't dwell on it.
anakin: oh... could you expand on that? because qui gon is wise, but I'm not sure if I understand him sometimes
obi-wan: well... when you feel sad about qui gon... you just have to think about how wise he is. just wait until when you go to sleep to think about being sad, and then stop thinking about it. the more you do this, the more you get used to it.
anakin: is that what master qui gon does too?
obi-wan: I... don't know. he meditates a lot. he is very wise.
anakin: master kenobi... i think you might be a troubled person, actually
obi-wan: i'm indifferent about it. you'll learn how to do this.
anakin: i'm starting to think this is what they meant about me being "too old" for jedi training
--
*dreamy transition back to obi-wan being anakin's teacher*
obi-wan: yeah... qui gon would be So good at this... he would have the Right answers for this kid...

in canon anakin and obi are described as "two halves of a single warrior", "closer than friends, closer than brothers", "knew each other more intimately than lovers", they "became men together" despite their age difference, best friends, "obi wan... always chasing after skywalker", "if kenobi was there skywalker was never far behind", "you were my brother anakin, i loved you!", "you're the closest thing i have to a father", "neither can imagine life without the other", erstwhile master and padawan, total equals, co-generals, brothers-in-arms, inseparable, "obi wan would want no other man by his side", anakin is in canon the only person Obi-wan ever says I love you to, obi wan is upset bc he imagined anakin would be with him when he died, ahsoka considers them in canon her adoptive parents, obi-wan watches over and raises anakin's kids from afar, anakin is both obssessed with and jealous of obiwan, obi wan literally longs for anakin and is undone with grief over losing him, they still have a vivid linked force connection 10 years after parting, obi wan buried their lightsabers together, anakin once ponders if he loves Obi-wan more than his wife
so literally any and all interpretations of their relationship are valid and correct, and id say their psychic/physical Force soul-bond transcends any single category and spills over into a soulmate love that is undefinable to our understanding of roles "on Earth" and is hopelessly tangled in the best of ways
#obikin#theyre just like that your honor#anakin skywalker#obi wan kenobi#also anakin is g a y that is all

That.... is a slogan from a movie poster.
THAT IS NEVER SAID ANYWHERE IN THE MOVIES OR THE (ORIGINAL) PREQUEL ERA NOVELS.
Honestly it's an odd sort of slogan to put on an Episode II poster, but I guess someone thought it sounded interesting and played on the tension Anakin faces with being in love with Padmé, and wanting to be a Jedi. I say 'odd' but really it's wrong.
The actual quote is this: "Attachment is forbidden. Possession is forbidden. Compassion, which I would define as unconditional love, is central to a Jedi's life, so you might say, we're encouraged to love."
Yeah, not exactly snazzy enough for a movie poster.
And this isn't Anakin just saying stuff off the top of his head. It's clear this is something he's reciting, something he's been told over and over again. This is George Lucas telling us who the Jedi are, and what their beliefs are. It's laid out very clearly, it's the whole moral of Star Wars: Fear is the path to the darkside. Selfless love is the path in the light.
Jedi love. They are called to love. To love selflessly and deeply, and to let go of the people they love when death takes them.
This is what makes the Jedi who they are.
The Jedi Code was never spelled out by George Lucas, and he's the only one I would trust a full description from. He INVENTED the Jedi, after all. We are given the central theme of possessive and greedy 'love' being born our of fear, and true love being selfless and sacrificial. And that's really enough. The rest we simply infer from the way the members of the Jedi Order act. It's called 'subtlety'.
There is love in the way Qui-Gon shows concern for Shmi living without Anakin, the gentleness with which he puts his hand on her shoulder, and rubs his thumb on her arm, in the absent-minded way of a man used to offering comfort.
There is love in the Jedi Council, when they acknowledge Anakin has issues, and express their concern over his fear. There is no condemnation, though Anakin naturally gets defensive. Nobody likes being told they're afraid, but you can't work through your fear until you acknowledge it's there.
And oh, there is SO MUCH love in Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon’s farewell. The way Obi-Wan lifts his master’s head, the way his voice chokes up so high. The achingly tender way Qui-Gon touches Obi-Wan’s cheek, saying volumes with one action.
There's love in the way Obi-Wan teases Anakin to ease his nerves about seeing Padmé again.
The original line GL wrote was, "Don't say that, Master. You're the closest thing I have to a father. I love you, and I don't want to cause you pain." Anakin tells Obi-Wan he loves him, and Obi-Wan doesn't bat an eye.
There is so much concern and compassion in Yoda’s face and tone when he speaks to Mace of Anakin’s pain, when he catches that backlash in the Force. Yoda has tears in his eyes. And Mace reflects back that concern.
The sadness and pain the onset of war gives the Jedi is clear. They know that war will bring suffering, and they would spare the galaxy that level of it if they could.
Obi-Wan literally tells Anakin he loved him, and Obi-Wan is always held up as an example of what a Jedi should be.
And what about that most famous moment of them all? Luke Skywalker, casting aside his anger and his hatred, tossing down his weapon because he knows it's not the answer, and becoming the Jedi his father should have been. Taking selfless love to another level, as he proclaims himself "a Jedi, like my father before me".
To sum up, "A Jedi shall not know anger, nor hate, nor love," is a slogan off a movie poster, that is supposed to be inspired by a much larger body of work, but that large body of work does not support that slogan at all. Only an idiot would keep the ten word slogan and ditch the enormous body of work. No, no, you ditch the slogan, and keep the body of work. You trust what the creator of the story actually says.
One last point:
The Jedi are never 'cast in a bad light'. They never deserved to be slaughtered, to be ended with genocide. They did nothing wrong, they merely got dragged into an arena where following the tenets of their religion and keeping true to their beliefs would mean their deaths, because the Sith set it up that way. Because sometimes evil wins. That's what Star Wars is about. Sometimes evil wins. But it can never win forever.
Love will trump fear. Light will drive out darkness. The Jedi had it right all along.
(@ablatheringblatherskite you wanted the speech, here it is)
look, the Jedi code that forbids love doesn’t just forbid possessive love or selfish love. It forbids love, period. It’s an important plot point, and while it casts the Jedi in a pretty bad light, it’s actually supposed to do that. Non-film media that tried to retconn that love is allowed and non-attachment is actually just healthy boundaries misses the point in order to produce a less-nuanced story where the Jedi order is unambiguously heroic.
#it's interesting how this is something children understand instantly from watching the movies#yet fully grown adults miss the point of star wara again and again#in defense of the jedi#pro jedi#star wars meta#jedi and love#oh i just wrote one of the things#i love the jedi#star wars#i'll probably get slaughtered in the public square for this#i mean no ill will to anyone#thanks for reading if you made it this far
