“come on! you can’t just sit there stuck in your room!"
Tumblr media
❝ i very much can. ❞
for a worker in a business reliant on customers, mu qing is unremarkable. he refuses to walk the streets of liyue to draw in patrons; at the day’s end, when people mourn the loss of time & stare at the moving sun in a hope to turn its path back eastward, they’ll come of their own accord.
mu qing expects the same of a funeral business. yes, death is an inevitable endpoint, that pitch he agrees with. but who needs a coffin in their home when it’s barely time!? & everyone needs a coffin eventually, so it’s not like the wansheng funeral parlor is lacking money??
everyone knows hu tao. even mu qing experiences the advertisements, he hears it from miles away.
❝ why are you at the inn, anyway? people are resting, they’re not ready to hear about your innovations in the coffin-building field. ❞ he crosses his arms. ❝ & where would you even bring me? there’s no way i’m trusting you, a funeral parlor director, to bring me anywhere remotely better than my room. with a nice cup of tea. i’ll get cursed at this hour. ❞

『 fragrant tea to cleanse the past 』; genshin verse ( rewritten )
mu qing ( electro, claymore ) is a server & storyteller at a chengdu-inspired teahouse in liyue harbor. on the elegant red cord, which ties his ponytail up, rests an electro vision. outside his job, he is often found in inns & out in the wild to gather ingredients. sometimes, he even lends a helping hand to other travelers on his road.
his cat ears & tail are his most striking features. when questioned about it, mu qing says he has katzlein blood somewhere in his lineage to get them off his back. in reality, his feline half comes from leftover adeptal energy thanks to being half-adeptus from his father’s side.
however, when he was younger, he asked for his adeptal blood to be removed from his body. though the procedure was painful -- akin to having a part of your soul excised -- he went through with it in the hopes he’d never have to leave his mother behind for the sake of protecting liyue. & perhaps he wanted nothing to do with his father who abandoned them long ago in an impoverished village or the questions that came with it.
in the end, the adeptal energy in his body didn’t disappear due to its potency. hence, he was left with the cat characteristics. additionally, his eyes can see misfortune clinging onto anyone’s spirit. aside from the adjustment in his sight, he has no extra powers & lost his ability to control energy naturally.

it was still busy inside the teahouse. none of the patrons left their seats or even turned to look at the commotion. mu qing’s shift was already done, but he decided to leave this day with a shock. a well-aimed bolt sent an elegant, extravagantly dressed man through the bamboo paper doors. a part of him — the majority of him — hoped the attack scorched his robes.
❝ i’ll replace that later, ❞ mu qing called out to his boss.
it’s a shame he didn’t get to reveal his saber tonight before that customer of his ran off. soon, the radiance of his vision, worn like a crown, faded back to its color. dusting off his own robes, he turned his eyes to a peculiar onlooker. he raised an eyebrow & crossed his arms.
if there was one thing you couldn’t beat teahouse workers at, it was their curiosity.
❝ since when do accountants stand by & watch other people’s business ... what does this fight have to do with you? what a strange pastime. ❞

headcanon: mu qing’s cultivation platform ( genshin impact verse )
under the assumption genshin runs on the idea of people having cultivation bases — it reeks of a modified xianxia — mu qing’s cultivation platform is irreparably damaged. it’s cracked & there are definitely pieces missing. this was the price he paid when he removed his adeptal blood as adepti are essentially enlightened beings (as in daoism). by cracking his platform, he can’t ever reach “enlightenment” & therefore is no longer an adeptus.
while it is damaged, it isn’t totally gone. he still cultivated enough to receive his vision, but when he overexerts it or tries to pass a certain limit, it’ll begin destroying his body. the qi in him becomes unstable & he has to stop whatever he is attempting to do. this is why he is content in living & doing whatever small things he can to help people (mostly children).
