There's nothing "ew" about Pop TV's newly announced Schitt's Creek pop-up event, "Visit Schitt's Creek."

This holiday season, fans of the cult comedy can experience the beloved show in an interactive setting which includes recreated sets, photo experiences, giveaways and more. Located in New York City and Los Angeles, the immersive pop-up will allow for a once-in-a-lifetime-experience.

The free ticketed event is limited but includes recreations of Cafe Tropical, the Rosebud Motel, Rose Apothecary, and more. More information about the event including dates, ticketing and location will be available soon at www.visitschittscreek.com.

Curious anon: I'm not going to discuss Emma's singing voice (vs Paige O'Hara's) because frankly, we all know who did the better job. But I'm curious to know, will this new Belle & new film ever surpass the original for you? And as far as OUAT is concerned, what do you like about Emilie's portrayal of Belle, what she brought to the character etc? What are your thoughts on Rumple-Beast vs Disney-live-action-beast?

Full disclosure, I have not seen the new BatB. But no. I don’t think anything can surprise the original animation for me, but also I don’t think it’s fair to compare a live action version to an animation version in all ways. You can compare characterization and storyline, and you can compare music if that’s applicable. Beyond that how do you compare CGI and real people to animations from 1991?

I love Emilie’s Belle. She goes beyond just being considered odd because she’s a bookworm or because she wants to see the world. She openly defies the expectations of her station, and stands up to what’s supposed to be one of the most evil people in the realm. She has adventures beyond her beast and his castle, she has a deeper backstory, she gets to interact with both fairytale and modern worlds, and now she’s a mom. Emilie brings a lot of dimension to the character, even when maybe the script doesn’t, and because of that I find Emilie’s Belle more relatable than the base Disney version.

I’m not sure Rumple’s “beast” is comparable at all. First off, he wasn’t cursed when he was young. He was already middle aged and it just happened. He was tricked into it. Second, there is a part of him that likes having the curse and that is addicted to it. The original Beast never wanted to be cursed and only ever wanted it to end. Also his entire castle was cursed. Rumple’s castle was just probably imbued with his magic and he didn’t have dancing flatware.

Rumple is entirely too complex of a character to compare to the Beast. He is only the Beast in part, in so much as he was supposed to be in Skin Deep. But he’s Rumplestiltskin, Cinderella’s fairy godmother (lol), he’s Mr. Gold, he’s a poor broken spinner, a man who has lost his family and his son, etc. He’s so much more than the Beast. That’s not to say the Beast is a lesser or bad character. They are just too different. 

The Beast doesn’t want to be the beast, and he only is because he’s cursed to look like a furry lion-bear thing. He’s kind of a jerk because he’s cursed and unhappy. He has been a selfish person in the past, but he’s changing because of Belle and he seems to want to change, and to want to break his curse.

Rumple is “a beast” because he does evil things, uses dark magic, is possessed by a terrible cursed entity, kills people, fucks with people, trades for babies, and looks like a sparkly disco lizard. He’s addicted to his magic, he’s got PTSD and anxiety issues, he’s been abused, and he’s been dirt poor. he was never born a prince, and really is only selfish in that he knows no one outside of Belle gives a fuck about him so he’s going to protect himself and his family. He’s not selfish because he was a rich brat who always got his way or because he only cares about himself. He does care about others. He does help others, and he loves very very deeply.

It’s just… a different version of the same archetype character, but Rumple is also about 7 different characters. I love them both for different reasons. But I love the stories for the same reason. At their core they are about love and acceptance.

TV Watch: Schitt'$ Creek Season 5 (2019)

Featuring a powerful, season-long story arc for Emily Hampshire's character while also giving every major couple in the show moving moments that move their respective dynamics forward, the overall season is a bit of a letdown from Season 4, despite this season being the first to earn an Emmy nomination for Best Comedy Series, likely for the episodes listed below. O'Hara's continued delivery of Moira's melodramatic reactions and unique vocabulary remain as hilarious as they are over the top while Levy's "straight man" responses are subtle yet nuanced by his one-of-a-kind eyebrows, both thespians earning Emmy nominations of their own. Yet the Dan Levy & Noah Reid interactions (along with some help from Dustin Milligan) drive the show's emotional core, making those best episodes as moving as they are socially important. Best episodes: "Meet the Parents", "Life is a Cabaret", and "The Hike"

MCN2016 - From Multi touch table to 3D World

In this session, we will describe the development process of a river table simulation entitled “Engineer a River System” within the newly opened Yawkey Gallery on the Charles River exhibition at the Museum of Science, Boston. This 24' interactive table uses a non-traditional form factor and marries a wide range of technologies to bring together the engineering design decisions and observation skills used in the rest of the exhibition. The aim of the multidisciplinary development team was to immerse visitors in understanding a river as a system, and prompt value-based conversations about the tradeoffs associated with these interactions. We will outline the evolution of this exhibit from its origins as a multi-touch table to the final, physical 3D-sculpted table that uses projection mapping on the surface and gives feedback to visitors, triggered by Hall effect switches in the table, in the form of animations, sound effects, projected text, and read-aloud text. This evolution was inspired by previous work around making digital exhibits accessible through the Creating Museum Media for Everyone project and incorporating what we have learned from prototyping digital media with visitors with a range of abilities. During development, the form factor and the content evolved together. We will present our prototyping findings, which led to the final exhibit, but can also be used for future projects. Examples include: which components aided in accessibility, such as the textures on the 3D surfaces, and which needed to be reevaluated, such as sparingly using sound effects because the additional audio sometimes added confusion.
