"well, i'm glad that you found your passion at the very least." luxanna muses. she wonders briefly why ana maria was sent to a convent; the phrasing leads her to believe that it wasn't something that she herself wanted. but it wasn't appropriate to bring up. "if it makes you feel better, i always personally liked the school secretary more than any of my teachers growing up. they were always easier to get along with, though maybe that's because they weren't the ones grading my papers."

"neither am i, to be honest," luxanna admits. it feels better than lying and pretending that she was able to do it herself. "but i've been told recently that i should, even if it's just a little bit. i think you should, too. we can't be on all the time."

"I suppose so. I'm not very good at taking time for myself these days," Ana Maria admitted, thinking back to her wild days in New York. She'd been selfish then, but she couldn't be selfish now. Not after everything she'd lost.

"Hey Luxanna," Ana Maria said with a faint smile. "How are you? Have you recovered yet from the lake party? Honestly, I'm still having nightmares about it." She shuddered some, taking a sip of her tea.

"i do insist," luxanna responds, taking her part of the stacks with a smile. "and thank you." she begins to follow along the path that ana maria had indicated towards, knowing the way well. like the back of her hand, actually.

"i did, yes, but that was a while ago. it feels like a lifetime ago." she responds, her mind wandering towards her youth almost immediately. how free she felt, especially compared to now. "you did as well, right?"

“Oh, well, I suppose if you insist,” Ana Maria said with a somewhat shy smile. She handed Luxanna a couple stacks of the study guide. “Thanks for the help. I was heading to the neighborhood north of the cross.” She indicated the way with her full arms before starting to walk.

“You used to go to the school, didn’t you?” she asked after a moment of silence to pass the time.

the blonde shifts back last second as well, her eyebrows shooting up in surprise though a reassuring smile brightens her face. "don't worry about it." luxanna responds with a dismissive wave of her hand, her gaze falling on the papers in ana maria's hands. "if you're moving that quickly, i have to assume those are some pretty important papers."

With school being shut down for two weeks due to the flooding, Ana Maria needed to get study guides to the students somehow due to finals coming up later in the month. Unfortunately she had to hand deliver them to each house, so she set out from the school to do so with an armful.

Her thoughts were preoccupied as she walked, and she had to swerve hard to the right to avoid a last-second collision.

“Oh! Sorry, I didn’t see you,” she said sheepishly.

"i get that," luxanna says with a little nod because really, she does. she's the same way. "but if school's starting up soon, then that's all the more reason for you to look into it." not that she had done it yet herself, of course.

"That's good, about you not being in the water," Ana Maria said. "I have thought about therapy, but with school starting again in a couple weeks, things have been really busy at school. I don't know when I'd have the time."

it's interesting -- the way ana maria's describing her role at the school, it sounds almost identical to luxanna's role within her work and, well, picking up where her mother left off. "well, hopefully they know how good they have it having you as backup. though i'm sure that they do, especially if you're willing to do this type of work."

“I can see how that would make sense,” Ana Maria said with a small grin. “It is a lot of work. Not that teachers don’t also work hard, but in a place like this, it’s easy for things to slip through the cracks. I have to make sure they don’t.”

"i'm alright. luckily, i wasn't in the water or anything like that. i know a lot of people were," luxanna says with a little sigh. "i'm sorry to hear about your nightmares, though. have you thought about booking a therapy appointment? there's no shame in it, and it would probably help."

"well, i insist." luxanna responds, holding out her hands in offering to take some of the papers from ana. "and you aren't taking up my time, really. actually, i have some free time until an appointment later and, honestly, i hate sitting still and having nothing to do. you'd be helping me out."

"well, that's very kind," luxanna remarks, her gaze traveling from the papers back to ana maria's face. that explained the frantic way she'd been hustling past. "i have some free time. would you like some help? if it's for the school, i'd feel terrible if i didn't at least offer."

"Oh, yes, well, potentially," Ana Maria said with a sheepish smile. "I'm delivering these study guides to the students in our high school so they have something to work on before finals later this month. With the school closed for repairs, I wanted to make sure they had their best chance for success."
