Is...this your office...I guess?” What he’s really asking is if this was the room that belonged to her...although he can’t quite bring himself to say the words. Or to hear them back from Sif. Instead, he finds himself eyeing the contents of every shelf, every heavy book, and even the plants sitting in the windowsill. “Sorry, is now a bad time?” He turns to look back at Sif. With news of any sacrifice that must be chosen by each head of house, he realizes she might be under too much pressure and not open for any visitors. “I can come back. If you need me to.”

despite the many miles shayne often found herself traveling, it seemed rare enough she’d ever wander the path of an actual patrol route these days. most of her outward bound adventuring was anything but average in dangers or company, in fact — every turn as perilous as the last and entirely unpredictable. these last few evenings, however, have been a turn in normalcy .. or as far as one could expect for such a magical city as selphia. and with how thin their numbers remained in their ongoing war against foreign forces, the young knight fully expected to continue seeing her time spent filling in as needed for otherwise regulars where appropriate. honestly speaking, strolling inner-city cobbled steps in drizzling rain, dancing among shadowed figures and restless men in alleyways whose appetite knew little in the way of satiety, regardless of form, had a way of keeping her on her toes still — there was a different kind of challenge in it all that lady cinder had forgotten and the refresher would never go unappreciated.

even when it led to situations like the one she presently found herself dealing in — face to face with former, long-lost acquaintances at shift’s end. ulysses would find himself glancing up at her from the ground, in actuality — his poor back bearing the brunt of the harsh impact resulting from his foolish attempts to gain her attention from behind. the flip was instinctual, purely. and while she would typically offer some form of apology in almost any other circumstance, she was by no means apologetic in the slightest, a glare as sharp as daggers burrowing into his very soul even as her civilian wear held lesser threat. “if you’re going to surprise someone, you may want to make sure they aren’t armed, first.” shayne somehow mentions casually enough between moments of internal confusion and actual shock at the mere ghost of him, given the years. a chained sai remains aimed at his person as she digs a heeled boot into his chest for security and good measure.

the pair were practically abandoned in the darkness as they occupied a mostly quiet street corner that led to a dead end, the once benign droplets escaping the torn-through heavens growing heavier in the passing seconds between them. they seem to mimic, in their own way, the gnawing weight gradually filling the lady’s chest, the ripple of rage the very sight of the man draws from the knight.

“speak, lebeau. and do pay heed — these words may very well be your last.” so choose wisely, essentially, is the warning unspoken.

Other works from the cast of TMA

The magnus archives cast is filled to the brim with talented creatives with over pieces of work and more people should know about them.

First the obvious: rusty quill makes amazing stuff! MAG is magnificent but more people should get to know their other stuff. Im slowly getting through rusty quill gaming and its delightful. If you want to hear Lydia Nicholas (Melanie king) be a stabby knife woman again, listen to Ben Meredith's (Elias) soothing voice without having to simp over a literal murderer and Alex (Martin, director, big boss man) being chaotic this is just the place. I also cant recommend ehough listening to one-shots special episodes, my favourite one is when Sasha (Georgie) gms Helen (Laverne, Melanies therapist), Lydia (Melanie) and Lowrie (editor) as they play a very cheotic and quite horny rpg about being stuck on a cruise ship to Bermuda. The game is by Macguffin and co, Jonny's and Sasha's game company that i will talk about in depth further in the post.

Stella firma is another rusty quill podcast. It is made and stared by the Meredith brothers. I have yet to listen to alot of it but it includes tons of gender fuckery and chaos.

I haven't listened to any of outlanders yet, but i believe it shall be great like everything RQ makes.

RQ also has "Rusty quill streams" that streams in twitch and you can also find on YouTube. It is hosted and stars Mike leBeau (the iconic tim stoker) Nico ( vocal editor, gabe us the kiss). The streams are hilarious and make me want to get into gaming, it is also a great way to support RQ and also get to see content from other of their creators. Last week featured Anil helping Mike playing through dream daddy and it was glorious.

I would be surprised if any of the hardcore TMA fans haven't at least heard of the mechanisms. But just in case:

The mechanisms were a steampunk-cabaret-neo folk band that were active in 2010-2020. The premis of the band is that each of its members plays a mechanism, an immortal cyborg and they all travel together through the universe, singing and telling stories about the tragedies they encounter. Non other than the beloved Jonny Simms was there lead singer, Jonny de'vil, a space cowboy from new Texas. other familier people were band mates aswell, Frank Voss (Basira) is Ashes O'Riley, an arsonists with a bass guitar, Jessica law (nikola orsinov) as the toy soldier who sings and plays the mandolin, ukulele and a variety of other instruments. Tim ledsam (jorden the extinguisher) plays gunpowder tim, the allmother of gender envy that plays the guitar. The Band has four concept albums that tell full tales:

"once upon a time in space" that is a reiteration of classic fairy tales but with lesbians in space.

"Ulysses dies at dawn" that is based in greek mythology and is bluesy and jazzy and wonderful

"High noon over Camelot" which is rooted in the tales of king Arthur and the round table, but as a wild west spaghetti movie of sorts in space. It has a main trans character and i lovely poly relationship that i have yet to see better represented in other media.

And "the bifrost incident", based on Norse mythology in a "murderer on the Orient express" setting, lesbians in space and a non binary main character.

Other then that they have two albums that are made out of short stories, many of them a backstory for fhe characters named "tales to be told" and "tales to be told II". They also have a standalone song about frankinstein and a live recording of there final show,that includes a few new songs, lovely banter and a revision if some ot their older works.

I cannot recommend listening to them enough.

Macguffin and co is Jonny and Sasha's game company. They design micro settings for RPG that some are free and some are patreon exclusive. I have yet to play any of the games myself but read through all the ones available online and listened to the acctual play podcast episodes of them ("dusk hollow pd" on MAG and "not far to Bermuda" on rqg). The settings are thought out so well and the attention for details is amazing. Jonny and sasha also stream on twitch regularly and the streams are a delight.

Sasha also has a podcast with the one and only Jessica law called "Jane austentations" in which they watch together all the film adaptations of Jane Austen novels and review them. Sasha knows an awful lot about Jane Austen, Jessica doesn't, but she has a surprising amount of knowledge about period accurate plants. The podcast itself is hilarious and Sasha's and Jessica's dynamic is great. Sasha also runs a blog under the same name were you can find other reviews.

Speaking of Jessica law, she is a great musician and i love her music so much. All of her work is available on Spotify and on bandcamp, she has a concept album called "lovers and fighters" which is a masterpiece in my opinion and five other albums. Her storytelling abilities blow my mind every time and her voice is beautiful.

Fay Roberts, the voice behind daisy is a poet and spoken word artist. Their work is so good! I cant explain how wonderful it is. They made " the selkie: a song if many waters" that is a poetry collection/ story that they wrote and preformed on bandcamp, and its one of my favourite works if litreture ever, it is heartbreaking and mystical and beautiful and makes me sob very easily. They also have quite a bit of spoken word poetry published online, both on bandcamp and on YouTube and i can't recommend enough for you to go listening to it.

He prefers to think of himself as the sort who can hold his liquor; after having been around drunks for nearly all his life, Uly knows when enough is enough, when to go home rather than make a fool of himself.

But there’s still the occasional night he takes himself just a little too far.

At present, he stands on a street corner - which in itself, is not uncommon. It’s the pile of cut flowers behind him that attracts attention from onlookers passing by. Roses, daisies, chrysanthemums, even tulips, bluebells, and baby’s breath. All rolled with paper and placed on top of each other. 

Ulysses brings a single cigarette to his lips. “Hey -- interested in taking any of these flowers off my hands? Free of charge, of course. I...don’t know what I was thinking when I said I’d buy the whole cart.”

daphne would never truly know her mother’s love, as she was stolen right from under the woman’s care at near birth, the fae’s passing a trauma daphne would barely recall to this day. from the stories and rumors, she’s gathered her mother  was a kind, lovely soul — a genuine bleeding heart of sorts — and taken from the world much too soon. it isn’t a matter the young doctor chooses to dwell on much, though the vague, nearly forgotten memories she holds seem to lean well in the woman’s favor. 

the man who would raise instead, is a man of great convictions, if questionable moral character. he would have her believe wholeheartedly in the dominance and strength of humankind, in their right to prosper and thrive. she was to serve as their protector and see to their future as best she could, honoring her father’s wishes by serving at his side in all endeavors and ensuring his favor. this would include aiding him in the secret capture, experimentation, and the many deaths of her fellow supernatural over the years, with daphne herself brainwashed into believing their work was for the betterment of all. 

rather recently, this secret work has come under closer scrutiny, specifically following the circulating rumor by the news station after a careless slip-up and the supposed death of her love, ulysses lebeau — a matter she had a direct hand in causing, even inadvertently. to quell the flames rising against them and offer a proper distraction, her father made clear her intention to marry and take over the company formally. given the pair’s tendency to shy away and avoid their growing responsibilities, leaving major company matters to the various shareholders of the board for a time, neither had previously seemed in the realm of possibility. 

daphne is now faced with the reality of a much more public life, doing whatever she can to redeem the family name and restore their reputation, while also following through on a marriage she wants little to do with. all in an effort to protect her father, make him proud, and ensure their work continues as it should.

she enjoys her quiet moments, inexplicably, and is quite the perfectionist

her tendency to watch others even during conversation can border on concerning, at times 

sketching, romance novels, green and black tea, children, and strolls through nature are among her favorite things

despite the less than ideal treatment she suffers, her loyalty to her father is insurmountable and perhaps stems from a wish to hold tightly to the only parental figure she has left

her primary reason for becoming a physician was in fact inspired by her father, having a wish to follow his command and aid in his work as much as she could. this includes as an unofficial surgeon, with his watchful eye by her side. still, despite the obligation she felt to fall in with medicine, she does take a fair bit of pride in what she does and the aid it may bring others 

as a consequence of her many duties and travels and her newer nightmares regarding ulysses’ death among others, however, she is often rundown and stressed. to that end, she’s one to have bags under her eyes and has the capacity to sleep pretty much anywhere, anytime though for the sake of appearances, tries to stray from making a public spectacle of herself. 

in fact, a lot of what she does and says can be due to a wish to maintain certain expectations and appearances, and often, she feels incapable of being herself, truly.

she was quite sheltered growing up, having spent a fair majority of her youth in her father’s presence alone, save for any captives they may keep or similar such circumstances. as such, despite her many teachings, she can seem quite naïve in some matters and socially inept on occasion. perhaps as a consequence of this, she tends to keep quiet often, finding much more can be gained from watching rather than speaking.

“Don’t start?” Ulysses blinks his eyes back. “What do you mean? Are you not excited to see me?” Some would say that Uly and Jeb had a rather…complicated relationship. Uly liked flirting with him, Jeb wouldn’t mind if they dropped dead…And yet, they still happened to share the occasional meal together. While Ulysses pouts, he taps the seconds out on the counter. “You mean to say that you haven’t missed my voice, either? Shame, shame,” Now his head shakes. “I’ve certainly missed hearing yours. How long has it been? We’ve got to start meeting somewhere else other than your motel,” After grabbing hold of a pen, Ulysses clicks it an extra two or three times. Just to be irritating. “Maybe one of these days, you’ll let me take you out to dinner again, hmm?”

Finally, he does lean against the counter and begin filling out the leger, full of a collection of half-truths in case someone ever took too close of a look at Jeb’s motel.

“Why are you always in a rush to see me off? Can’t two old pals catch up a bit?” He asks. “No one’s come sniffing around here at all…have they?”

He’s sat at the front desk in a full on slouch — head barely kept upright, belly puffed out, hands steepled above said pronounced gut ( don’t ask — it’s the natural position his hands feel the most comfortable when relaxing ). Hardly the visage of a hardworking ‘employee’ of this ‘prestigious’ establishment, but whatever. This nap’s well deserved in his mind. Especially after one old ninny tried to chew him out for not being professional. To which he lazily proclaimed how he’d be alright— not like the boss man can afford to lose me.

Stupid play on words, but it’s not like that stranger knew any better.

And so he’s intent on catching a few z’s before — an irritable clanging of door chime interrupts the possible snooze. Still, alarm and approaching footsteps aside, Jebidiah doesn’t make a single damn move to ‘wake up’. Both eyes stay firmly shut and each breath stays a smooth in-out, in-out until..

“Don’t. Start.” Two measly words hardly take air, but the punctuation between each makes his intention clear. Don’t start any bullshit, you rail thin weasel — lest you want fight number infinity to take place at a second’s notice. But, much to his everlasting chagrin, Ulysses does, in fact, start and hardly fucking stops. “Quit flappin’ your gums and fill out the damn ledger. Room 5, you cross-eyed peacock.” And he whips out the heavy keys to hopefully end conversation.

the birth daughter of lady silk, she is the youngest of three. her sister is seraphim, head of fraser, and her eldest brother is ulysses lebeau or gabriel, though this isn’t readily known. seraphim is the only sibling she is aware of at this time. their relationship is strained at best.

rei would have her name legally changed in an effort to distance herself from her mother and her practices. the surname would stem from her father, an action of further petty spitefulness. 

speaking of her father, rei is also a cousin of gabriella ryu and naksu, with her father serving as a direct relative of the ryu clan. he remains her only living parental figure at this stage, though he has been jailed in relation to the ryu crime organization, which he would never truly disclose. rei has only recently come to know of the family deeds, in part, and she is still mostly in the dark. her father would lead her to believe he acted separately from family wishes, protecting them further. 

she would spend time with her father’s side of the family quite often in her efforts to keep her mother’s influence at bay and stray from any ongoing abuse in her youth. a consequence of this time spent would have her watching over the ryu family brood, serving as gabriella’s keeper in particular. in time, her ‘nanny’ status would become something of an official title, though it’s become less of a necessity in the passing years given the ages of all involved.

having lady silk as a mother, one would imagine similar tendencies present in rei as her sister and one would be correct in this assessment in most ways. particularly in the level of stress endured, which has never quite left rei entirely. in fact, she seems to thrive in it, given the nature of her work. rei was wise enough to abandon her family ‘legacy’ when of proper age to know the difference between genuine love and what her mother spouted. and while she would prefer her sister wise up as well, rei has never directly spoken to sif on this concern in great depth.

for all her mother has done, however, rei is still conflicted enough on her relations to maintain cordialness with her stepmother especially, and occasionally, her sister.     

as a child, she was absolutely someone who snuck around the house to read comics and enjoyed wrestling in secret during her usual ‘sick’ days, her take-charge nature easily falling in line with aspirations to be heroes of their caliber. in her own right, at least. and while more disillusioned these days, that hero tendency still thrives heavily in her bones.

she is just as athletic as she’s always been, heavily involved in sports of all kinds without her mother’s immediate knowledge. these days, her boundless energy is expelled by running around town at all hours of the day, chasing leads or the ryu brood.

her investigative work is carried in tandem with tivan savio’s firm and while little more than a glorified secretary some days, she finds value and freedom in what she does. the stray dog strut investigative offices serve as a second home, with a majority of her day spent in service to others on mostly her own terms. 

naturally drawn to such phenomena, supernatural fiction is her favorite genre, followed by a good old fashioned thriller. 

she tends to follow plenty of outlets that specialize in paranormal work, especially, and blogs on similar subjects in her free time.

she owns an enchanted lighter that, once clicked, has the ability to transform her into literal smoke and travel freely in this form. it resembles a zippo, but thinner, rounder, and marble green in color.

enchantments aside, she is also a regular enough smoker.

her status as a cursed blood is recent, just shy of two weeks. she has absolutely no recollection of the incident in question, having blocked out the trauma of it all entirely.

objective precognition — the ability to perceive future events based on others intentions. even before her transformation, rei has always been attuned to the divine and spiritually inclined, her talents of perception incredibly keen. she’s found her ability dramatically enhanced since, resulting in her capacity for more diligent future sight.

ella enchanted — lady silk would go a step further in ensuring the life of rei was more to her standards by cursing the poor girl to absolute obedience and an inability to refuse her. how this was accomplished has never been known by rei directly. this curse, perhaps without silk’s knowledge, also extends to any command given by another. rei has done her best to hide this from anyone, so even sif is unaware. still, because of what it entails, rei is prone to being found doing plenty of odd favors even when she wishes she could refuse.

Dusk has come and gone. The night sky around Ulysses twinkled in the twilight as he stood outside of the On The Road motel. He’s certain he can smell the old carpets from the lot outside. When his shoulder itches, his first thought is that it’s bedbugs - which he wouldn’t put past the place to have. Uly wouldn’t push himself to spend the night here, not even for a quick romp with some arm candy. No, Ulysses is there for business, and business alone. Someone in the audience of the Poulailler had pulled him aside a few nights prior - their business had been robbed, and could he make an example out of the thief to ensure it wouldn’t happen again? Of course Ulysses didn’t mind - so long as the check was big enough. And what better place to let a man scream for an hour or so than a seedy motel that most guests were too scared of to check in? It adds to the ambiance. If anything, he was just adding to the atmosphere.

Without a second thought, Ulysses goes directly into the lobby - and smiles at Jebidiah behind the counter who, contrary to Jebidiah’s belief, Uly considers a close friend. “Well, hello there beautiful. It’s been a minute, hasn’t it?” He flashes a smile, knowing Jeb’s disdain for it. “I’m looking for a room. Just for the night. Preferably one that doesn’t have any guests in the rooms on either side of it. I’ve got my lady outside, see,” While he nods outside the door, Ulysses’ lady is truthfully a man with ropes bound at his ankles. “And I don’t think anyone wants to hear what we’re about to do in there. She’s a bit shy, you see. I don’t think she wants an audience. Unless you’ve changed your mind and decided you’re interested -- because I’m sure I could change her mind on the matter.

“You! You!” Ulysses didn’t believe he’d be able to track the woman down again, but he had a pretty good eye for faces and even better knowledge of Selphia’s streets, which he’d first learned as a young boy prowling for trouble. His knowledge had been reinforced upon becoming a soldier and going on patrols. He knew the usual hiding spots, the seedier parts of towns, and where to hide his wallet from thieves.

But the woman had, unfortunately, got the best of him; he’d bat his eyelashes and promised an extravagant night out with champagne and dancing under brilliant lights.
