"Why must these things always end in some kind of drama?" He laid on their shared bed, boots kicked off to the corner of the room, vest unbuttoned, but made no more move after that, staring up at the ceiling. "Once, just once, I would like to return from an event with an inkling of what has gone on, and a sense that the world has returned to rights. That it went well. But no... Something always happens." With a low groan, he brings his hands up to his face, a light tug on his beard. It was not his battle, of course, but he had sworn a vow to Syrena, and in that matter it extended to her kin. Whether invited in or not, he could not help but want to meddle, or protect, or something in between. Part the reason he used both dances to sweep falcons onto the floor, the other being he just could not for the life of him care a whit what anyone else in the room thought. He had spent too long trying to weave conversations into his favour, and grew tired of the game. "My dear wife, at least tell me you enjoyed the night. Maybe then it will help me refrain from impossible fantasies of returning home, where things seemed much simpler."

[...] " Would that a gaze could kill, " it wasn't as if he were avoiding his good - sister, but, there had been tactful maneuvers to evade the conversation he knew was coming. They'd find him beside an ivy-wrapped pillar with a drink in hand, cold and refreshing amidst the bloom, the scorching sun, and the fury of an Arryn, unrelenting. Brown hues look for an escape, though he only managed a wan smile for the sake of cordiality. " You would be fearsome indeed. "

"Oh, surely not." He grimaced. As much as he wished to raise opinion of the Riverlands, he did still bank on forefathers retreat from the capitol to grant him some space. Enough to make it unlikely the Queen would think it worth the visit. As much as he wanted the role of hand, if only to be able to grant security to their family, a new light had been cast upon it. Was it more risk than he was willing to take? Was the reward truly so sweet? Sweeter than sitting here with his wife, knowing they carried their child? It was enough to give him pause. "I beg you to never relinquish me, Syrena, for I am happier when firmly within your grasp." The words are said with the straightest face, only the slightest raise of an eyebrow to the double entendre. "And I never will, at least not intentionally. Though I suppose I could call my failed joust a broken promise."
“ not unwise for you , husband . unwise of you for the court . soon enough the queen may call on you , hmm ? ” tones carefully indifferent , rare in her lack of clarity in emotions in his bid for the hand — own desire for it gone amongst the rubble to used in the rebuilding of king's landing . thoughts of protection and safety for the child they had created and no sense of confidence in the queen's court . “ if you choose to become a thing of my fantasies i will not stop you nor will i relinquish you for duty . ” gentle smile they had held thus far quick to drop , disappearing in a roll of their eyes as arm comes to drape across stomach . “ you will find yourself with the fish should you bring that oaf of a man near me . ” instinctive in their now search for their sister in the hall , attention drifting back to amos with slow breath . “ you have not . i trust you implicitly with my all . ”

"Here we go again." Amos offered Syrena his arm, free hand straightening his tunic. There had been little word on the race that had consumed so much of his time before the attack, though in truth it had been the furthest thing from his mind. Who would want the job now, looking at the utter destruction of the capitol. He would never say such out loud, but even though the Targaryens had come out victorious, it had shaken his faith in the crown that such an attack had even been attempted. He looked across to his wife, and considered what could have been lost that day, what tragedy they had barely escaped. "I suppose it too late to return to Riverrun, isn't it?" He joked, though there was an undercurrent of truth to it, a nervousness he hadn't felt since he was a child.

Away from Riverrun, Amos found his duties lighter, his day moving quicker without his father interrupting. Tasks that had taken him half a day could be completed in an hour, when he was left to his own devices. It left him more time to think. Of course, that was not necessarily a good thing, by the time he sat down for a private dinner with his wife, his head spun from the circular thoughts. To be able to speak freely was not a privilege he took for granted, and sitting across from her did bring some peace. "And how was your day? There seems little and less to do in the Keep, now the excitement of the wedding has died down. I was just thinking that, while embarrassing, it did seem to draw attention away from those deaths in the Dragonpit. I hardly hear anyone speak of it, now."

[...] " What? " Perhaps it was something cultivated in Vale lands only, for an Arryn's anger stifled all good sense when provoked; to think he'd come under scrutiny under her too. " I'm... " The bear's face is drawn blank, blinking stupidly, as he rankled memory for what exactly could have caused offense to Lady Tully. " --- Sorry ?? " There was the matter of the Hand but ... an exhale followed when he spots the small smile curling beneath icy stare and peals of his own laughter falls monotone; can you hear the stressed nervousness deflate from him, already exhausted. " I ... Yes, I'll join you. Gods. What happened for you to exact onto me this kind of a joke ? "
“ have you come to undermine me once more ? ” visage remained stoic for long moments , bid to have their good brother uncomfortable under their scrutiny before little smile forms . the position of hand no longer one to hold appeal — syrena content for any in immediate family to have gotten the position ( husband or good brother ) but their humor is one where she is loathe to allow him to go unscathed . “ i jest , brother . are you to accompany me in breaking fast ? if you bear a message from my lord husband or a maester , i am remiss to tell you i am not in a listening mood . ”

The only way to describe it was being pulled, a thousand different directions and with no guidance. He looked out the window to the storming sky, streaks of lightening flashing through. His sister was out there. Adrienne and Ysabela, too. Possibly hurt, definitely in danger. And yet, could he leave Rena, knowing them to be just as vulnerable? He had made vows in that sept, but did that duty not then extend to anything she asked? "I will." Anxiety bubbled in his stomach, and yet there was nothing that Rena could ask of him that he would ever deny them. His sword hung at his side, a disused thing, and in that moment he regretted prioritising studies over training. "Only if you can promise me you'll do all in your power to remain safe." He reached for her with his free hand, other on the hilt of the sword. "I couldn't live with myself, if anything happened while I was gone."
since becoming aware of threat , syrena remained quiet — pacing despite discomfort faced since evening before where nothing alleviated sharp pain in her back , swelling of ankles yet nothing compared to anxieties now . “ amos . . . ” begins selfish request they ought not voice . not when their family remains just as at risk , if not more . confidence in the royces to keep her family safe yet certain that sister's own husband would leave adrienne and ysabela unprotected to pursue lofty whims . “ please . will you see to it that my sisters remain safe ? or escort them to the royce apartments where they will be ? ”

"Oh, and that would be such a terrible, terrible thing. No, just let me make note of it, so I know exactly what not to do." He gave a mock frown, shaking his head. While he was still the heir and not the ruling lord, he could imagine days where he and Rena did not leave their rooms, for the saying was truly family, duty, honour. For at least a little while duty could come second to the family they were creating together. "I do suppose that fishing trip I had dreamed about with Lord Antony must be put to the back burner." He sighed deeply. A friend, for sure, but to side with him was... Unwise. Especially when wife sat before him. He'd understand, surely. "It will not, that I can promise you. And I have never broken a promise to you yet."
“ it is in your best interest , then , that you not answer the call . if you did you would get nothing done as you would not be leaving our bed . ” uncaring of the slight inappropriateness of statement with many ears surrounding them , rena hummed in thought of the tourney she had proposed . “ my siblings would be in attendance , of course . as would be lady bolton . i am uncaring if either of their spouses attend . ” they would dismiss antony mormont for time to come , her thought he was better suited to return to the stormlands with the tarths rather than their ancestral home . “ the entirety of court will never been hosted at riverrun . if it comes to fruition you will need travel to the mountains of the vale and attempt to find me . ”

"But where would the fun be in that, my dear? No, the joust has given me a taste for violence once again." He gave an exaggerated laugh, converted to sigh as their lips met skin. To be separated for most of the night was a wrench in his plans to fulfil duty, and ensure she had everything they could need. Of course, he also knew better than to fall back into the hovering tendencies he had fallen into. "I think that would be a wonderful idea. Though it would be remiss not to invite your sister." He had found himself quite pleased with the entire arrangement with the Vale, inbuilt alliance with a house that seemed to understand the changing political climate. Or, in simpler terms, friends. "But a smaller event than this, nonetheless. I do not think I could handle having so many in our home. Nor see me be bested again, and so swiftly."
lips quirked into simper , thoughts gravitating towards the sight — though rena releases a sigh . “ you with a sword does excite me , though , in the lands of honey perhaps it would be wise to employ softer tactics . there must be someone that would leave their service willingly . ” fingers reach for his , light tug to pull hand up to place brief kiss to his knuckles . “ it has been some time since you last donned armor and paraded about so gallantly . upon the birth of our child , shall we hold a joust for our vassals ? ” they release his fingers to bring more cake to her lips , firm upon ignoring the ball around them . the lady tyrell may have set forth stipulations for her celebrations , yet rena made no move to heed her call despite the dance card that shifted under the lights with each move . “ an announcement for the riverlands , only . ”

"I cannot apologise for worrying about your welfare, for it would be a lie. But, I can promise to try and contain such urges in the future." He pulls her hand up to press a kiss to the back of it. He knows himself well enough to know that he will always worry for his wife, who he swore before gods and men to protect, and has no intention of ever faltering in that duty. But he could see how such worry could be suffocating, even if he felt completely justified, given the situation. And, he must admit to himself, the fierce independence is something he loves about them. He can only hope child has the same fire within, something to nurture into a flame so fierce none would ever stand against. A child like the one who held so much of his heart would be something he would treasure. "Point taken. Though, in that same vein, if I ever so much as insinuate that I wish to host court, I will require you to confine me to our rooms until I snap back from delusion. The thought alone may just give me grey hairs." He touches the side of his head with a free hand and a gentle chuckle. "Surely not. I would think us here until another royal wedding, then hopefully discharged of our duty and free to return home." He would like for their child to be born in their home, protected against the world by a river he had trusted since youth. Or, failing that, in the Vale, high enough to be unreachable. He saw safety in both, where he could not find in Highgarden.
they placed their good hand on his arm , gaze squinted as they glanced about . “ it is how you handled yourself . ” infuriating for them who strove to be independent , a relationship between them one of equals rather than meant to be waiting upon each other . their marriage one of grown love but borne out of sense of duty coupled with syrena's refusal to allow anyone to shape their path for them . already she felt differently — though due to their growing child , or amos in his response to what happened in king's landing . “ i believe you to have wishful thinking . had we been in position to host the queen and her brood , i would return to the vale for you to attempt to find . ” her lord husband would fail in his pursuit of her in the hypothetical , of that syrena would have made sure of . it looked an insult in their eyes to take more from the family that had already lost , though a betrothal lingered to come to fruition soon , no doubt . “ it is , though i prefer the mountains of the vale . flowers can only keep one occupied for so long before the loveliest of blooms loses its impact . what i wonder is for how long court will be held here , or if they are to be put upon with the presence of her highness until king's landing has been rebuilt in its entirety . ”

"We can only hope that the emperor loves his children too much for that. Whether they both conspired or not, they both should have known exactly what travelling down this path could mean. This all could have been avoided." He was half-certain his own father would have disowned him, had he made a similar blunder on his own wedding day. Not that the thought had even occurred to him. It was sad, when love was overruled by necessity, but he couldn't find it in himself to feel too sad for the pair, not when it brought them to such perilous days. "Perhaps one made the other unbearable. You would think the queen would be sympathetic to someone lost to a dragon, and yet..." He sucked a breath in through his teeth, raising his eyebrows. " I think the Velaryons, especially, would be wonderful friends to have. Surely there is common ground to be found, between the houses. It does leave a precarious power void, howeevr, at the right hand of the Queen. Surely, she must have some idea of who she wants as her hand, and who she specifically does not."
“ until then , will their love be enough to win the favor of their subjects ? it is yet another example of tradition ignored , and an alliance that may not remain valid should the emperor take slight . he may well disown his daughter and we will have a potential queen with none of the resources nor power that was promised ── and ire to be dealt with should there be retaliation . ” love truly blinded people to consequences , and though the queen may take offense to stated facts should one feel bold enough to lose their head it would be continued for her to lose favor . raw power would not sway opinions , a show of it may lead to rebellion . “ grief , or frustrations with the queen herself ? ” easy to masquerade true feelings in wake of tragedy but actions taken upon exit suggested deeper feelings to the tully . “ we should attempt to become friendly with them . friendship with the rowans and velaryons may be of a benefit to us , as well as them , should they need to call upon us for anything . ”

"At sword-point if need be, and if you wish it. Lord Tyrell has raised the bar for husbands wishing to celebrate their wives, and all of us must now find some grand romantic gesture. Tell me, would that work?" He smiled, the easy banter bringing solace to his soul. He may not have been able to name them Queen of Love and Beauty, but that did not make his wife any less beautiful. For a moment, he could forget the politics, the unrest, the worries that plagued him. "I wish we were back in Riverrun, simply for the safety, but... I cannot say I am not enjoying myself. The Mander does not compare to the Red Fork, but that may be bias speaking, and it was exhilarating to joust once again, even if it was incredibly short lived."
shoulders relaxed from husband's disinterest in the sweet , slow blink back as they met his gaze before it drops to the cake once more . “ that is a long time . do you propose to bring one of the tyrell chefs with us for them to be able to make it in riverrun ? ” posed question that is in jest , though spoken aloud the thought now crossed their mind to do just that . soft hum of happiness as another bite is taken , shoulders raised then dipped in shrug . “ it is a good distraction from the reason we are here . it may be enough to lull others into a false sense of security . if the queen and council were smart , they would give their thanks to the ruling lady for her thinking . are you ? ”

"Oh, and wouldn't that solve half the worlds problems, if only." He laughed, but it soon turned to a deep sigh, dark eyes shut as though that could shut out the rest of the world. Madness, he was sure, infecting the court and robbing friends of good sense, because what else could inspire one to make such public misstep? He could not imagine making such a risky move, and couldn't see the potential gain, though he assumed there must be one. He knew he must seek out friend at some point, to gain some clarity on the situation. Perhaps... Quietly. Loyalty laid with spouse and good family, and he would do well to ensure they felt that, in this time. "You understand I must advise against that, I hope." He cracked an eye open, a hint of a smile on his face. "As entertaining as I would find it, it would likely only raise tension. I am sure Adrienne does not need to deal with that, on top of everything else."
fingers stroked through thick strands , ears pricked to retain their husband's words but hues remained set upon the wall crossed them . court itself not to blame yet the fancies of a weak man that should not been privy to her ancestral home . a middle ground for her husband to need find considering his relation with antony and their unrelenting pursuit of the bear lord to be brought to justice by the hand of the vale . “ stupidity knows no bounds , dearest . you will not know peace until muzzles are used for humans as they are animals . ” what adrienne would will from there , syrena would act in full as relations with the vale never ceased , loyalty to its ruling family grown under its tutelage and care stronger than any bonds an oaf could conjure . “ i did not . my sister spoke of her concerns and fears but what has been left with me is a sense of insecurity and unwantedness i find unacceptable . it would do us well to return home lest i shove my slipper down antony mormont's gullet and watch him choke . ”
