my favorite thing about vahn is he is the most morally grey adjacent wol i have. initially i had the headcanon for him not to even being the wol but i think his conflicting view on the world & people in general vs the way helping people avoid the grief he knows all too well is so interesting. after arr i think he fully planned on leaving and going back to being a bounty hunter but then being forced to ishg.ard is what kinda spirals into him taking up the mantle of the wol , no matter his feelings on hyd.aelyn or being seen as a hero when all he feels like is a monster

the  way  vahn'ik's  soul  appears  is  complicated  to  say  the  least .  while  azem's  soul  was  indeed  split  into  fourteen  parts  upon  the  sundering  ,  with  each  calamity  and  subsequent  rejoining  it  has  become  more  whole  ,  slowly  restoring  it  to  it's  former  glory .  growing  up  ,  vahn'ik  was  always  greeted  with  strange  feelings  of  longing  for  things  he  didn't  even  have  the  words  to  explain  or  dreams  that  in  turn  were  much  more  memories  than  anything .  after  the  death  of  his  family  ,  they  just  fell  second  to  all  the  pain  and  grief  that  consumed  him  on  a  daily  basis .

after  his  interaction  with  a  crystal  of  light  ,  these  feelings  returned  full  force  alongside  the  full  manifestation  of  his  echo  ,  the  dreams  being  its  initial  manifestation  when  he  was  a  child  ━  far  too  weak  to  read  any  souls  other  than  what  was  left  of  his  own  fragmented  one .  and  though  it  was  as  he  remembered  in  childhood  ,  the  feelings  got  stronger  and  said  'dreams'  returning  ,  interchanging  with  the  night  terrors  that  often  plagued  him .  fearing  that  this  was  a  sign  that  he  was  losing  sight  of  his  true  goals  ,  vahn'ik  was  very  against  staying  with  the  scions  after  he'd  done  what  they'd  asked  ,  afraid  it  would  divert  him  from  his  path  and  take  away  all  the  hard  work  he'd  done  in  order  to  get  where  he  was  when  he  arrived  in  limsa .  in  the  end  he  did  stay  ,  deciding  to  do  so  after  the  events  in  ul’dah  where  both  alphinaud  and  he  were  forced  to  find  refuge  in  camp  dragonhead  with  the  aid  of  haurchefant  ━  unable  to  bring  himself  to  leave  the  young  boy  alone  to  deal  with  the  despair  that  ate  away  at  him .

though  his  echo  strengthened  ,  reading  into  souls  of  those  around  him  ,  often  involuntarily  ,  his  soul  remained  for  the  most  part  fully  fractured .  there  was  no  sense  to  be  made  of  things  he  was  able  to  remember  only  gaining  flashes  that  rarely  ever  made  sense .  this  all  changed  once  ardbert  merged  his  soul  into  vahn’ik’s  ,  both  of  them  being  shards  of  azem .  between  this  and  his  time  in  emet  -  selch’s  recreation  of  amaurot  ,  the  memories  slowly  became  less  fragmented  ,  faces  and  voices  of  friends  and  loved  ones  no  longer  escaping  him  during  these  moments .

this  also  fundamentally  changes  him  quite  a  bit  as  well  ,  however  ,  as  he  is  gaining  these  memories  from  azem  ,  who  he  comes  to  recognize  truly  as  thanatos .  gaining  memories  of  all  those  lost  it  becomes  nearly  impossible  for  him  to  separate  himself  from  thanatos  and  all  that  he  was  before  the  sundering .  now  having  ,  as  of  after  his  time  in  the  first  ,  nine  out  of  the  fourteen  shards  of  his  soul  ,  the  time  as  azem  seems  like  something  of  a  far  away  dream  ,  something  that  he’s  just  now  awoken  from.

out  of  all  the  titles  he  has  come  to  bear  ,  vahn'ik  has  never  liked  having  the  title  of  warrior  of  light .  even  after  he  makes  peace  with  being  hydaelyn's  champion  during  the  events  of  the  final  days  ,  he  is  still  incredibly  uncomfortable  being  referred  to  as  such .  much  of  it  ties  back  to  the  keeper  not  wanting  any  ties  to  anyone  or  anything  in  his  pursuit  of  revenge  ,  feeling  like  such  a  thing  would  take  him  away  from  his  true  end  goal .  that  goal  being  to  find  the  people  who  killed  his  family  ,  end  their  lives  and  to  then  join  his  family  in  death  ━  whether  from  the  injuries  sure  to  come  from  the  altercation  with  those  he  sought  to  slay  or  by  his  own  hand  ,  it  didn't  matter  to  him  either  way .  the  other  part  is  his  growing  animosity  towards  this  duty  bestowed  upon  him  by  hydaelyn  ,  something  that  isn't  partially  resolved  until  his  interactions  with  venat  in  elpis .

vahn'ik  very  rarely  will  talk  about  his  biological  family  in  detail  ,  perhaps  a  minor  mention  of  his  mother  or  siblings  here  or  there  in  a  off - handed  comment .  if  anyone  tries  to  pry  into  his  family  life  at  all  he  just  brushes  it  off  and  deflects  onto  another  subject  or  onto  the  other  person .  the  only  exception  to  this  being  when  he  is  particularly  close  to  the  person  asking  and  trusts  them  wholeheartedly  ━  only  then  will  he  let  small  details  of  his  life  before  his  family's  demise  slip  out .
