      In retrospect, this meeting was probably inevitable---probably, though there’s a distinct possibility that if she’d thought of it, she’d have been trying to avoid it that much harder. Still, inevitable or not, Mal suddenly finds this is the last place she wants to be, and she’s overcome with an almost irresistible urge to start fidgeting.

            “Oh.” Her voice is quieter than usual, smaller---and sounds nothing like her at all. “Uh---hi.” There’s a beat, where Mal’s mind suddenly kicks into high gear overthinking, and she almost panics for a moment as thinks---there’s probably more she should say, right? There’s probably more that should be said and she probably should have said more than just three words anyways and she can’t believe she’s been on Auradon for over a year and still hasn’t grasped a single basic of being polite or having conversations or---

    She’s gotta stop overthinking and just say something. “It’s nice to meet---I’ve heard a lot about---this---” She cuts off, already fed up with the way she’s stumbling over her words, and breathes in. “Is this weird? This is weird, right?”

      Slumped down in her seat, the side of her face pressed flat to the wood grain of the table in front of her, Mal inhales one deep, long breath. Her words come out somewhat distorted by the way her cheek is flattened against the surface.

            “I think I’m gonna fake my death. Dye my hair electric blue. Resurface ten years from now with a new identity once I'm someone who knows how to not be sad anymore.”

      Mal’s never had much to do with Hades---never had to or wanted to, because that was how it was on the Isle; you picked your fights with the other kids and you avoided any villains that weren’t your own parents, lest they, oh, say, banish you to the far side of the island for ten years. But that’s sort of the problem---because, apparently, avoiding him on the grounds of him not being her parent may not even have been accurate, and she still---she’s still reeling from that piece of circulating information. And now she’s here, on the Isle, again, because she doesn’t know how not to pursue it.

            “Is it true?” She foregoes pleasantries, or any sort of greeting at all, and she wants to sound tough and demanding but she knows she doesn’t, knows it wouldn’t mean anything if she did. “That you’re---I mean---everyone’s saying it---pretty big bombshell for something I didn’t even know for the first eighteen years of my life---is it---” Stopping herself, she manages a breath and then, finally, another coherent sentence.

            “Are you really my dad?”

      Slow-footed and dull-eyed, she trudges her way out to the absolute farthest, most obscure and secluded corner of the campus she can find, as far from her life, from the other people, from every single thing as she can get. And when she gets there, she resignedly and methodically drops her sketchbook, lets her purse fall, shrugs off her backpack, and when it’s all laying on the grass at her feet, she clenches her fists, takes a deep breath of air,                                                                               and      she       s c r e a m s.

      She screams long and loud, until she’s out of breath, and then she sucks in another breath and screams again. She screams until she’s gasping for air, until tears are streaming down her cheeks, until she’s hoarse and it hurts, and still, she tries to pull in more breath, tries but all she does is choke on the beginnings of the sound, her throat aching and lungs protesting and then that’s all she can do is gasp and choke and sob, so much it makes her nauseous as she lets herself drop to her knees.

      Still she can’t catch her breath and she sort of gives up trying, shoulders shaking with hiccuping sobs, and she doesn’t know if anyone heard her, as far out as she went, but she doesn’t care.

      She still just wants to scream.

            “Fuck.” It comes out on a breath, barely audible---probably not really meant to be heard, but it’s certainly said with feeling anyways. She’s not---good at this, whatever this even is. Coping, probably, because let’s face it; she’s the worst at that. Or communication, or being open with things that are bothering her, or not being bothered by little things that shouldn’t have be fucking her up so much in the first place.

      There’s about a million things she’s miserably unsuccessful at, and one of the most noteworthy of them has always been keeping herself closed off from Jay. She should be grateful for that, probably, since it’s the last thing she’d ever actually want, even if that fact has her feeling a little put on the spot right now.

      But it’s true, there aren’t supposed to be secrets from them; they’re supposed to talk about things, do this together---they’d agreed on that--so she reluctantly admits to herself that he’s right whether she likes it at this moment or not.

            “It’s not....” She sighs, shaking her head a little. “I'm not trying to keep secrets, it’s just dumb. And I don’t---I don’t really know how to talk about it without sounding like a greedy, self-centered gremlin.” She lets those words hang in the air for a moment or two, just long enough to gather her composure enough to manage a genuine, if subdued chuckle. “I mean, I am a greedy, self-centered gremlin, but.”

    It takes another moment, because of course she can’t just talk, of course that would be way too easy, of course she has to struggle through every second of figuring out how to express herself. Would she really be Mal if she could be a functional person for one minute---literally just one minute, that’s all she’s asking?

            “I just... miss you guys. I don’t really know how to say it other than that.” With a helpless shrug, she meets his eyes, wry amusement at her own expense coloring her expression. “See? Like I said, dumb. You’re right here.”

      At first, she only lets out a groan in response to his comment, before slowly, reluctantly sitting up in her seat. “My parents are villains---” Is that a note of bitterness in her tone? And buried under it, a hint of despondency? “---I have to be dramatic or I’ll die. It’s in my genes.” She’s trying for a flippant attitude---trying and failing, because she can’t really keep from looking or sounding miserable, and she’s probably a few months past the point of being able to fool anyone into thinking she feels nothing.

      She meets his gaze only reluctantly, an ugly part of her still loathing to be seen when upset. “Maybe. I just want to do something completely different, maybe I could drastically change my hairstyle---again.” Sighing, she feels her brow furrow, and resists an urge to shake her head. “I don’t really want to. Being sad sucks. Letting it out sucks worse. I guess I don’t really have a lot of say in it though given how shitty my---my whole life is---was---I don’t know.”

            “Yeah, well,” she says, because denying it never got her anywhere in the past, and it certainly won’t now. That doesn’t mean she has to be all soft and tender about it, though.
