First film
Verna: just please tell me what happened
(Ben (with an ice pack on his neck), Jay (sopping wet with bruised knuckles), Carlos (wet and shivering in a robe with a towel round his shoulders and a slightly traumatised expression on his face), Mal, Doug, Lonnie, Jane and Evie are sitting in next to each across from Verna. Mal and Jay especially look ready to kill. Next to Verna sits Audrey looking smug. Outside the sound of ambulance sirens can be heard)
Audrey (seizing her chance): I think I can clear it up for fairy godmother.
Evie: oh blow it out your ass!
(Doug puts his hand on hers to calm her down)
Verna: Mal. Please tell me what happened
Mal: all I know is I arrived at the boys locker room. Carlos was crying. Ben was looking at the ceiling and drying Carlos off. I asked them what happened. Ben said “chad” I went into the locker room to punch the dickheads brain in. But jay beat me to it.
Jay: if Evie hasn’t stopped me I would’ve finished the job.
Carlos (small voice): can I go back to my room now please? I’m not trying to be rude but I’m in a robe and it’s a little chilly in here. I barely escaped the chicken pox on the island and I do not want a cold to be my undoing
Verna: yes of course. I’m sorry. Jay you can take Carlos back to your room. And please put ice on your hands. I know you probably don’t need it but it’s school protocol and it would make me feel a whole lot better
(Jay carries Carlos our of the room)
Audrey: you’re seriously letthim go after what he did to chad?
Evie: ok that’s it!
(She launches herself across the room at Audrey. Doug Lonnie and Jane stop her. Doug and Jane grab her arms. Lonnie acts as a human shield between her and Audrey. But Evie manages to get a well aimed kick at Audrey’s face. Mal and Ben don’t even move from their seats)
Audrey (muffles with her hands on her face): oof. I think you broke my nose
Jane: oh boohoo for you. Your father can buy you a new one.
Mal: hey um. Can I go check on Carlos please? I feel responsible
Verna: of course.
(Mal heads to the door. She turns to Verna
Mal: don’t...don’t punish Audrey for what chad did. It’s his fault not hers she’s just trying to look out for her own. Which if the positions were reversed is exactly what I’d do.
Verna: ok.
Audrey (looking very confused): that’s not how it’s suppose to go. You’re supposed to be sent back to the rat hole you came from.
Evie (still being kept at bay by Doug and Jane): please let me punch her
Mal, Ben, Doug, Lonnie, Jane and Verna: no.
Mal: how’s your neck?
Ben: I still can’t move it
Mal: I think I know what to do
(She goes over to him)
Mal: you need to relax for this to work
Ben: ok. I’ll try
(Mal place her hands on each side of Ben’s neck. Her eyes and hands glow emerald green.)
Audrey: don’t touch him.
Mal: I gave no reason to hurt him (the green glow fades). Is that better?
Ben: much better yes. Thank you.
Mal: your welcome. Cmon guys
(Ben, Mal, Doug, Evie, Lonnie and Jane leave the room. Audrey follows them)
Audrey: Don’t for a second think you’ve won. I will get you kicked out. I WILL get my school back
Evie (really REALLY mad by now): we’ll you said I couldn’t punch her
(She goes to force choke Audrey but Mal gets in the way)
Evie: why are you still trying to protect her.
Mal (breathing with difficulty): because...she’s...angry
Evie: well, so, am, I
Mal: This is. How. You deal. She. Acts out. Like me
Evie: So what? You’re the same?
Mal: she. Has. Self worth. I don’t.
Jane: are you going to let her go?
Evie (eyes glowing a bright sapphire blue): not until her face matches her hair. Right now it matches Ben’s suits.
Doug (putting a hand in Evie’s shoulder): Evie. Please
(Reluctantly Evie releases Mal who collapses on the floor and curls into the foetal position)
Ben (rushing over): May I?
(Mal nods. Ben scoops her up in a bridal carry)
(Jaylos’s room. Jay’s laying spreadeagled in his bed with Carlos wrapped around. Both are in pyjamas. Carlos specifically in a black and white onesie. Both look very comfortable. Dudes dozing on jay’s stomach)
Jay (looking up at the others): he wanted to wear my tourney jersey but it’s in the laundry
Lonnie: you two are adorable together
Jay: we try
Lonnie: anyone for a sleepover?
Doug: I’m game of Evie is
Evie: here. In jay’s room.
Jay: Carlos has entered viper grip mode. You’re not gonna get me anywhere now without the jaws of life
Evie: here it is then.
Mal: Ben could you help me get the snacks please?
Ben: sure. Ummmm. Would you like to walk or would you like me to keep carrying you?
Mal: you know you could have told me to walk the rest of the way
Ben: I know but I didn’t want to disturb you. You looked so comfortable I couldn’t ask you to walk and ruin it.
Mal: fair point. Hmmmmm. I can teleport us. That way neither of us have to walk much
Ben: cool. Um. Is jay ok? He’s looking at me and not blinking. Don’t get me wrong. His smiles nice but won’t his eyes get dry
Jay: I’m fine.
(He smirks)
Ben: oh dear. You know don’t you.
Mal: I swear I didn’t tell him
Devie: neither did I.
Jane and Lonnie: nor me
Carlos (raising his arm): I did
Ben: who told you
Carlos: I guessed when you met us when we first came here. You could barely get a full sentence out when you looked at Mal and jay. Then I caught you looking at jay’s back when he was on the ladder in the library.
Ben (very apologetic): I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to encroach on anything
Carlos: don’t be sorry. I was staring at him as well. Why do you think I noticed you doing it.
Jay: I’m amazing. I freely admit to that
Evie: but would you admit to being an egotistical bast...
Carlos: hey don’t swear in front of the baby
Evie: what?
Carlos: me. I’m the baby
Mal and Ben: This is correct
Evie: you know if you stay like that magenta the muscles in your legs will atrophy and you won’t be able to walk.
Jay (still eyeing Ben): ehhhh she’ll be ok.
Carlos: can someone go get those snacks now please
Mal: right sorry. Your majesty shall we teleport?
Ben: yes please my lady
(They poof our of the room)
Jay: so. What’s new.
Devie: nothing.
Jay: you guys kissed didn’t you.
Evie: yes
Doug: it was brilliant
Evie: except...
Carlos: My screams stopped you trying to feast on each other’s faces?
Doug: yes? (Nervous smile)
Jay: we have a bathroom if you wanna con...
Evie: JAY!
(At the kitchens)
Ben: what’re are you in the mood for?
Mal: pasta. Specifically more of that mac and cheese you made for our date. Double the amount though. You have to eat something as well.
Ben: hmmmmm...(he genuinely smiles) well alright then.
Mal: now lets see. What do I remember. Carlos wants chocolate. Obviously. But don’t worry. I can carry s whole vat. He’s become partial to chilli curly fries and chilli cheese dogs. Don’t put the fries in with the dog. He’ll notice then we will all be in trouble. Jay likes bacon fries and mint chocolate milkshake. And a quadruple bacon cheeseburger. He an Carlos take turns with the chocolate vat
Ben: and Evie?
Mal:...I’m not sure.
Ben: is Evie a vegetarian?
Mal: no. I’m the only vegetarian in the group. I think she likes those tartlets.
Ben: cherry Bakewell?
Mal: no. Those things with spices in them and cheese and herbs.
Ben: ...QUICHE!
Mal: that’s the one.
(Five minutes later Ben comes out if the kitchens with his arms laden with food. Mal’s sitting in the floor slumped against the wall)
Ben: are you ok
Mal: yeah um yeah. I was just thinking
Ben: yeah?
Mal: do you think I’m doing the right thing? You know like not stealing the wand?
Ben: are you doing what you think is right?
Mal: yeah
Ben: then it’s right.
(He helps her up)
Mal: here let me
Ben: nope. I insist.
Mal: you don’t have to though.
Ben: I know. I like helping you.
Mal: you’re a saint.
Ben: I’m really not.
Mal: compared to every one else we’ve met in Auradon you Lonnie Jane ad Doug are saints.
Ben: awww
Mal: I uh I have something to tell you
Ben: Doug set us up?
Mal: um I had a feeling. How did you...
Ben: he told me
Mal: I didn’t put a love spell on you. Not my area.
Ben: I never thought you did
Mal: I’d like to do something. But I’ve not. I’m not sure if it will be appreciated mostly because I’ve never done something like it before.
Ben: ok. Whatever you like
Mal: hold on (she magic’s the food to jay’s room. She looks around to confirmnobidys watching them). Come with me.
Ben (pleasantly confused): ok
(Mal leads him around the corner to behind a vending machine. Then she kisses him)
Ben: hyuck
Mal: good sound or bad sound?
Ben: good sound. Very good. Sound.
Mal: oh thank god.
Ben: shall we get back to the others?
Mal: not quite yet
Ben: oh?
(They kiss again. No noticing that Audrey’s off to the side in the shadows watching them. Audrey pulls out her phone)
Audrey: Grammy? It’s me. I need you to come to family day. Pest control

Scientists Found Ancient, Never-Before-Seen Viruses in a Glacier
15,000 years ago, some water froze atop the Tibetan Plateau and became part of a glacier. While humans were busy domesticating dogs, the ice entrapped millions of microscopic organisms per square inch. Many of the tiny life forms died, and their genomes—the only proof that they had been there in the first place—slowly degraded. Then, in 2015, scientists from the U.S. and China drilled down 50 meters into the glacier to see what they could find.
Five years later, these researchers have recovered evidence of ancient viruses in the glacier ice, including 28 viral groups that are new to science. Their study detailing the discovery was posted online as a pre-print on Tuesday.
Records of ancient microbes, like those found in glacier ice, give scientists a glimpse into Earth’s evolutionary and climate history. As our planet undergoes climate change, these frozen records can inform predictions about which microorganisms will survive, and what the resulting environment will look like.
“Glacier ice harbors diverse microbes, yet the associated viruses and their impacts on ice microbiomes have been unexplored,” the authors wrote in the paper. The group declined to comment on the paper, as it has not yet been peer-reviewed—“This is an exciting new area of research for us,” co-author Lonnie Thompson said in an email.
Viruses found in glacial samples known as ice cores are especially understudied because of how small they are, said Scott O. Rogers, a professor at Bowling Green State University and an author of the book Defrosting Ancient Microbes: Emerging Genomes in a Warmer World.
“The biomass is so low that anything you contaminate it with on the outside is going to be at much higher concentrations than anything on the inside of the ice core,” Rogers said. “The decontamination issues are extremely important; otherwise, you're going to just get garbage.”
According to the study, there are no special procedures used to avoid contamination when drilling, handling, or transporting ice cores. A key feature of the research was devising and testing a three-step process to remove these surface contaminants. In a -5ºC room, researchers used a bandsaw to scrape away 0.5 centimeters from the circumference of the cylindrical ice section. After, they washed the ice twice, first with ethanol and then water.
The researchers tested their protocol by covering the surfaces of sterile ice core sections with bacteria, viruses, and genetic material. In all cases, the procedure successfully removed the contaminants.
After applying the protocol to two ice cores from the Tibetan Plateau, the researchers used microbiology techniques to record the remaining genetic information lodged in the glacier ice. They found genetic information belonging to 33 different groups of viruses, 28 of which were completely new.
It is not surprising that dozens of these viruses had never been seen before, said Chantal Abergel, a researcher in environmental virology at the French National Centre for Scientific Research.
“We are very far from sampling the entire diversity of viruses on Earth,” she said.
But the effects of man-made climate change may make it impossible for scientists to discover many of the ancient viruses preserved in glacier ice. According to the study, warming temperatures are causing glaciers around the world to shrink and release microbes and viruses that have been trapped for tens to hundreds of thousands of years.
“At a minimum, this could lead to the loss of microbial and viral archives that could be diagnostic and informative of past Earth climate regimes; however, in a worst-case scenario, this ice melt could release pathogens into the environment,” the authors wrote.
The worst-case scenario seemed to become a reality in 2016, when an outbreak of anthrax in Siberia killed over 2,000 reindeer and hospitalized 96 people. Anthrax spores can stay alive for years, and the outbreak is believed to have been caused when melting permafrost thawed a decades-old deer carcass infected with the bacteria.
Frozen viruses may cause similar problems: Abergel and her husband led a team that revived a 30,000-year-old giant virus from permafrost, showing that it could still infect its target, a single-celled amoeba. She said that the reactivation of ancient viruses is a concern, but people should not become overly paranoid since viruses are “all over the place” and many pose a more serious risk to bacteria than humans.
Rogers had a more dire take. In a chapter of Defrosting Ancient Microbes, he and his co-author described the pathogens, hazards, and dangers associated with glacier ice research.
They wrote, “The dangers encased in ice are real, and with the increases in melting of the ice worldwide, the risks from the release of pathogenic microbes also are increasing.”
