Oooh, I can’t believe it’s not canon! But yes, it is not so, the fanon passed as canon and general belief that Kurt is half demon is not part of his profile in this blog.

Sometimes, fake news can come from multiple sources. Last month, conservative activist Candance Owens stated that Congress has spent “over 200 million dollars in 200 settlements” on allegations of sexual misconduct and affairs since 1998. However, this is simply not accurate.

Reviewing Owens’ Assertion

The Turning Point USA communications director posted the following tweet last year:

Congress has a slush fund, made up of tax dollars, that is used to pay off & silence their alleged sexual assaults and affairs. To date, over 200 million dollars in 200 settlements have been paid since 1998.

As previously stated, Owens’ assertions are simply factually inaccurate. Between the fiscal years of 1997 and 2017, the United States government paid over $17 million dollars towards various settlements and awards. The aforementioned settlements are not merely limited to cases of sexual misconduct and extramarital affairs; the payments also involved payment issues, racial discrimination, and issues within the workplace. Furthermore, agencies which share ties to Congress have also been involved; one prime example of such is the Capitol Police.

Additional Details

Owens’ tweet regarding Congressional management of sexual assault and affairs came shortly after the sentencing of Michael Cohen. Cohen, President Trump’s former attorney, will commence serving his three-year jail sentence for his commission of various white collar crimes. These crimes include bank fraud, tax fraud, and, of course, campaign finance violations.

Ultimately, Cohen wound up pleading guilty to making payments to Karen McDougal and Stormy Daniels, women who allegedly engaged in extramarital affairs with Donald Trump between 2006 and 2007. The payments were designed to be hush money and Cohen furthermore stated that Trump ordered him to make the aforementioned payments. The president, however, not only denied having affairs with McDougal and Daniels, but moreover maintains that he never ordered Cohen to break any laws.

Historical Background

The Congressional Accountability Act (CAA) was successfully passed by Congress in 1995. The CAA allowed for labor, health, civil rights, and workplace safety laws to be applied to the legislative branch of government. Moreover, the Office of Compliance (OOC) was established for the purpose of conducting this legislation, while the Treasury Department had the task of forking over the owed awards and settlements.

In 2017, the OOC stated that that CAA paid out 264 awards/settlements between the fiscal years of 1997 and 2017. Mathematically, this amounts to a grand total of $17.2 million dollars, a far cry from the supposed $200 million dollars which Owens declared in her tweet. The cases tied to the various awards and settlements extended beyond cases of extramarital affairs and accusations of sexual assault. Discrimination cases were rampant, as were issues regarding contracts and monetary compensation for work.

These 264 payouts were not broken down by the nature of the allegation, but they include more than just sexual harassment claims. Cases involving discrimination on the basis of race, age or disability, as well as disputes dealing with contracts or pay are covered under the CAA.

Candace Owens did not cite any sources to substantiate her claims.

CHARACTER BIOGRAPHY: 

Mothers were outraged the day that Elliott Gilbert threw his first punch. With a tender little fist and a bleeding mouth, he held himself tall despite the tears that threatened to fall. At six years old, Elliott had a view of the world unlike any other. With photographer Ava Gilbert , best known for her ‘underground’ work and her borderline activist views, and rock band Heathens frontman, Elias Gilbert, as parents, he was bound to be viewed as eccentric.  

They instilled in him true values and even from that young of an age, Elliott knew the difference between right and wrong. He understood, in a way that many others are unable to, that no one person is better than another. Which is how he ended up with a fist in the air, an ache in his jaw, and a grateful kid sporting an unwarranted black eye as his bully scurried away to his mother. It was unconventional, of course, to use his fist rather than his words, as adults had once told him, but the moment he spotted a child younger than he being pushed around he had to act fast. And words? Well, they were just that. Words that he didn’t quite know how to use to talk his way out of a situation that involved a big kid acting tough and wanting to fight.

He walked away from that encounter marked as a delinquent but filled with joy at his father’s pride and his mother’s smile, even if she tried to hide it behind a light scolding.

That day was just the beginning.

You see, Elliott never had a chance at being normal and, with that one punch, he discovered that he didn’t want to be. He wanted to be extraordinary. He wanted to be the type of person that his parents could be proud of. The type of person who he, himself, could be proud to be. So he approached everything with the same amount of vigor and ardor as he did that fight. He threw himself into it all head first and his enthusiasm was palpable. His parents could see it in the pictures he took after discovering his mother’s old camera, in the strokes of his paintbrush on a canvas, and it could be heard in the encouraging speeches he gave to uplift his peers when they were feeling low. None of it, though, quite compared to the passion with which he came to approach music.

Elliott’s love for music was strong. It was in his blood, felt as much a part of him as his own arm. The feeling only solidified as he watched his father play and knew that, one day, he would be the one on stage. The instant that his parents discovered his fervor they stepped up to feed his passion. It was his mother who first placed him in front of a piano and his father put him behind a set of drums. He displayed a great skill for both but his talents proved to lay elsewhere because holding a guitar? That felt like the most natural thing in the world and his voice was a God-given gift if his father was to be believed. It would be this, his music, that would get him through the rough moments in his life.

Middle school was more of a challenge than he anticipated. Suddenly those around him were becoming consumed by the idea of a social hierarchy and, unfortunately, many of his friends lay at the very bottom. That didn’t sit well with him. He, on the other hand, found himself with a decision to make. With his charisma and likability, it was really no surprise when he was given the option of being one of the ‘popular’ kids. All it would have taken was a little more effort and dissociation from many of his friends. In the end, it wasn’t a difficult one to make but it was one that would change the course of his life. As it turns out, he valued his soul and morals more than he wanted an easy life. That didn’t sit well with those particular social butterflies that had extended him a hand. Therefore, they sought out to make his life miserable. As much as he wished he could have ignored it, there was something about others proclaiming themselves as superior that never failed to get under his skin, much like how the bully of his youth was able to when he was unable to identify why it bothered him so.

Elliott’s disinterest in conforming made him an enemy. His inability to stand back and take the abuse made him a miscreant. He persevered, though, and inspired others to do the same, to step up and fight for what was right. He made it known that he celebrated the differences between them all and refused to ever consider himself as wrong or unworthy. He wanted everyone to embrace themselves and others. He may not have been the most popular, but he was happy and content with the person he was becoming.

Although middle school prepared him for what would come, high school was still puzzling with its divide and the strange concept that everyone must carry a label. He, along with a small group of friends, rebelled against this. He was Elliott Gilbert, not a leader or a hoodlum simply because of his inability to let the underdog go unspoken for. He was not the slacker that others chose to believe him to be because he cared more for his music than actual education. An education that came quite easily, so much so that he excelled in every class he took. But no matter how much he tried to protest, his label remained. Now he’s decided to accept whatever they have chosen to call him. There are bigger things to fight for and more important things to strive for. Such as his budding career as a musician. He just needs to find a way to get through school without causing too much of a ruckus or getting sucked into the pettiness that is the divide.
